One would think that an illustrated Scrabble dictionary would illustrate the obscure words that we struggle to learn. How about a picture of a hoatzin, or an obol? But rather this dictionary has pictures of everyday things that everyone knows. I will say that it is beautifully set. Much nicer looking than the non-illustrated version,
but as a reference it is no better than the other and probably it isn't worth the extra money. The only improvement is that it contains more lists at the end including 3- and 4-letter words, 4-vowel sixes and 5-vowel sevens and eights. Of course, you can get those lists in plenty of places.

I am a huge fan of brain teaser books. I have a huge collection of these types of book. BUT after reading this book I say that this book is not as good as it seems in the review. If you think that you will find many Logical and mathematical riddles, this isn't the book for you, but on the other hand if you are into word games this might be a great book for you .

I just adored this book and enjoyed every single puzzle in it. As one reviewer points out, this is a book for word puzzle enthusiasts. It might be compared to Will Shortz's "Puzzlemaster Presents" series. What I love about this book is that it can be done without the aid of a dictionary, as it uses a vocabulary from common cultural literacy (e.g. types of candy bars, etc.). I also appreciate the fact that the references aren't dated like some game books are, which can lead to frustration when I am asked to rely on my knowledge of stars from the eighties. Overall, I simply loved this book for the accessible but challenging fun it provided. I hope that Mr. Battaglia will be gracing us with another book of this type soon!

Just received this book today and am very pleased with the format and the design. The text is easy to read and although there are pages printed on each side there is a good size area on the grid which allows the printed grid and words to lie flat whether the puzzle is on left or side side of the book. There is only one puzzle per page. The book is separated into chapters and the chapters are of different catagories. Within each chapter are headings the pertain to the chapter title. For example - Chapter 15 is 'Decades of Word Searches'. Puzzles within this chapter include 1890's,1970's etc. with the page for each puzzle noted in bold right beside the puzzle name. Some of the other chapters include, 'Your Life in Word Searches', Melodies, Bookworm,Celebratory. There are 18 chapters total. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves the challenge of word searches!

The games are only one of the fun features. All answers are encrypted! Each is given on the same page as the game, but is printed upside-down and backward - as in a mirror image. To ensure that they cannot be accidentally read, the answers are further obscured by using italics and a reduced size type. I homeschool ALL my 7 kids (4 are through college & grown, 3 remain, ages 9 -15) My 9 year old is in Algebra 1, & my 15 year old is in Calculus & physics, so they keep me going looking for ways to incorporate "learning" new info or reviewing "past" studies, without it being sooooo dry & boring! Let's face it some things just are tedious!! You would be surprised at the people who cannot name all the states! So this is a remarkably refreshing way to "review" or learn the States, almost effortlessly! A friend suggested this book, & we were very pleased with the results!! Give it a try, you should be delighted, as was I! I just left it in trhe bathroom & REMOVED their current issue of "outdoorLife" Ha Ha, they actually had NO other choice, but to peruse or NOT!!!! :-)

Word lists based on 4th ed OSPD; good price, comprehensive, indexed nicely, easy to follow and some really interesting lists (ie mnemonics for the top 100 7-letter bingo stems, words with 70% vowels, short words that take suprise "s" endings, etc). Baron has gone beyond just listing "the two's", "q without u's", "jqxz's" and "word-hooks", lists (although, these lists are included); and created a really great resource for Scrabble enthusiasts. Only complaint is that word lists are printed in VERY small font, so those of us with small print issues should invest in a magnifying glass.

This series has a great variety of challenging crossword puzzles. Perfect for killing time on a Sunday afternoon, but be prepared to think, they are not just easy puzzles. Nice selection of puzzles, defientely recommend for the price.

These are indeed challeging puzzles but I am improving as I go through the book. I love that the pages are perforated and the y can be easily removed, especially for the ones on the left hand pages. I can't wait to finish and try some of the other volumes!
