Editorial Review:

When cartoonist Bill Watterson announced that his phenomenally popular cartoon strip would be discontinued on the last day of 1995, Calvin and Hobbes fans throughout the world went into mourning. Fans have learned to survive - despite the absence of the boy and his tiger in the daily newspaper. Now, like the wave of a sweet memory; comes one last chance to experience Calvin and Hobbes, in its final collection. Like the thirteen extraordinarily successful Watterson books that came before it, this volume promises to deliver all the satisfaction of visiting its characters once more. Calvin fans will be able to see their favorite mischief maker stir it up with his furry friend, long-suffering parents, classmate Susie Derkins, school teacher Miss Wormwood, and Rosalyn the baby-sitter. This collection, including full-color Sundays, has it all: Calvin-turned-firefly waking Hobbes with his flashlight glow; courageous Spaceman Spiff rocketing through alien galaxies as he battles Dad-turned-Bug-Being; and Calvin's always inspired snowman art. There's no better way for Watterson fans to savor once again the special qualities of their favorite strip.

This book kept me laughing out loud. It nurtured my inner slacker mom. I'd love to spend a week at the beach with the author. My brother-in-law will cook the shrimp and grits.

GET IT!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I picked this up just because it was only a few bucks and the title was catchy. OH MY GOSH - this was a HOOT!! I was constantly reading passages out loud to family/friends. The chpts are short enough to accommodate a busy mom's life and provide much-needed comic relief to this stress-filled life. It was GREAT!

Editorial Review:

Celia Rivenbark is an intrepid explorer and acid commentator on the land south of the Mason-Dixon Line. In this collection of screamingly funny essays, you’ll discover:

*How to get your kid into a character breakfast at Disney World (or run the risk of eating chicken out of a bucket with Sneezy)*Secrets of Celebrity Moms (don’t hate them because they’re beautiful when there are so many other reasons)*ebay addiction and why “It ain’t worth having if it ain’t on ebay”*Why today’s children’s clothes make six-year-olds look like Vegas showgirls with an abundance of anger issues*And so much more!
Celia Rivenbark’s essays about life in today’s South are like caramel popcorn---sweet, salty, and utterly irresistible.

Get Fuzzy is great - this is two books in one. 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I love all the Get Fuzzy books. This is TWO of the smaller ones in one book. Be careful you do not order the books that this book contains AND this book both hoping to get even more, because you will end up with duplication! This contains BOTH My Move Contract and Take Our Cat in one book. It is not new material.

Editorial Review:

On the Media lauds Darby Conley as "the most successful cartoonist of the new generation." --National Public Radio

As Darby Conley's fourth treasury, this title presents strips from I'm Ready for My Movie Contract and Take Our Cat, Please!

Named Best Comic Strip of the Year in 2002 by the National Cartoonists Society, Darby Conley's Get Fuzzy takes a keen and witty look at the dynamics of interspecies cohabitation.

Beleaguered ad exec Rob Wilco is the mild-mannered guardian to Bucky, a sharp-fanged, self-absorbed house cat with a penchant for scheming and screenwriting, and Satchel, a gentle laid-back Shar-pei-Lab who frequently finds himself on the receiving end of Bucky's mischief.

Inside this fourth treasury, Get Fuzzy fans will follow Bucky's vainglorious pursuit of fame while Rob holds a magazine intervention with Satchel.

Feynman never got out of his box, because he never had one! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Part physicist, part prankster, part musician, part teacher, part genius, part story teller, part little boy and all human being, this is the true story of Richard Feynman. He was a man with an insatiable curiosity, and had a zest to explore the world of physics, human nature and himself.

The stories in the book are funny, entertaining and enlightening. Feynman never got out of his box, because he never had one. From the gifted young boy who fixed radios by thinking to the top notch physicist who could explain concepts to laymen like no one else, Feynman was one of a kind.

Well worth the read!

The Re-Discovery of Common Sense: A Guide to: The Lost Art of Critical Thinking

What an egotist 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I read this book with the hope of gaining more insight into Dr. Feynman. While it is indisputable that the man was a physics genius and that he was a phenominal help during the Manhattan project, I grew tired of his incessant contempt for anything or anyone that he didn't approve of. Much of the book is spent with him trying to outmatch and outwhit those in fields that he considers inferior to physics, such as pure mathematics and philosophy. It grows tiresome reading this after a while and the book left me with no better understanding of this distinguished scholar.

Editorial Review:

Anecdotal, unpretentious, and lively, Feynman's book is filled with stories about his outrageous adventures--from trading ideas with Albert Einstein to discussing betting odds with Nick the Greek. A New York Times bestseller for 15 weeks.

This was the first book we bought to read to our son (he hasn't been born yet). We liked that it discussed the concept of nothing, and that it looks to be a book we won't mind reading over and over again.

Good message about real values in a world of too much stuff. My 4 yr old grandson loves this book.

Wonderful story 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful story about how sometimes the best thing to get someone for their birthday is no "thing" at all. I love how the author gets the story across without using a ton of words--the text is nice and concise. My only slight disappointment is the style of illustrations. I know they're his trademark, but the small, 3-color illustrations don't always hold the interest of the youngest picture book audience.

Editorial Review:

DESCRIPTION: Mooch the cat desperately wants to find a gift for his friend Earl the dog, but Earl already has everything. "What do you give a guy who has everything?" Mooch wonders. The answer, of course, is nothing! This simple story features characters from Patrick McDonnell's popular comic strip, Mutts, and has the same depth, charm, and heart that he gives to his daily readers. With delightfully spare illustrations and text, this book has all the makings of a longtime classic, perfect for gift-giving all year round.

Editorial Review:

For most of us, that perfect retort or witty reply often escapes us when we need it most, only to come to mind with perfect clarity when it's too late to be useful. The twentieth-century writer Heywood Broun described this all-too-common phenomenon when he wrote "Repartee is what we wish we'd said."

In Viva la Repartee, Dr. Mardy Grothe, author of Oxymoronica, has lovingly assembled a collection of masterfully composed -- and perfectly timed -- replies that have turned the tables on opponents and adversaries. This delightful volume is a celebration of the most impressive retorts, ripostes, rejoinders, comebacks, quips, ad-libs, bon mots, off-the-cuff comments, wisecracks, and other clever remarks ever to come out of the mouths -- and from the pens -- of people throughout history. Touching on all areas of human endeavor, including politics, the arts, literature, sports, relationships, and even the risqué, the book features contributions from Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain, Dorothy Parker, Mae West, Groucho Marx, Winston Churchill, Dolly Parton, and scores more.

As entertaining as it is intellectually enriching, Viva la Repartee is sure to capture the attention of language lovers and is the perfect antidote for anyone who's ever thought I wish I'd said that!

Interesting stories, but crummy chapter introductions 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Darwin Awards are dedicated to those who "do a service to humanity by removing themselves from the gene pool," that is those who kill themselves (or at least try to) in a gloriously shining example of blatant stupidity. This is the fourth book produced in celebration of such stupidity. Now, I must say right off that I did not read the print edition of the book, but listened to the audiobook, so some of what I have to say may not apply to other editions of the book.

Overall, I found the stories to be interesting. I liked how the readers tried to accent their voices to go along with the stories - affecting an Australian accent when discussing an Australian winner, or a Romanian accent when discussing a Romanian winner, and so forth. The stories were nice and short, which made them great for car rides of any length.

What I didn't like was the chapter introductions which discussed subjects such as DNA, the aquatic ape theory, AIDS, and so forth. These sections were a mixed bag - some were interesting, and some boring - but, none of them had anything to do with the Darwin Awards. I would rather that the creators of this book had slipped in stories of famous deaths in history, or something having ANYTHING to do with the Darwin Awards. They were too long, too boring, and jarringly out of step with subject of the book.

So, while this is a good audiobook with some great Darwin Award stories, it is poorly constructed, damaging the listening experience. On the whole, I give this audiobook an extremely guarded recommendation.

Editorial Review:

Over 1.5 million copies sold in this New York Times bestselling humor series

With over 1.5 million copies sold, the Darwin Awards series is the alpha chimp of humorous human mishaps. Despite being an international bestseller, and inspiring a movie—The Darwin Awards—these cautionary chronicles have failed to stop another generation of Darwin Award winners from steering motorcycles with their feet, heating lava lamps on stoves, using liquid soap as brake fluid, and drowning themselves in the kitchen sink.

Filled with more than 100 new tales of evolution in action, plus science essays and a parody research paper supporting Intelligent Design, The Darwin Awards 4 shows that when it comes to common sense, natural selection still has a long, long way to go.

The Clique Summer Collection #3 Alicia Review 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The 3rd book in the clique summer collection was an amazing book. It showed many hidden things that we didn't necessarily know already. It was a book that kept you on your toes and you never knew what was coming next. I can't wait for the next one.

For everyone who loves The Clique 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When Alicia arrives in Barcelona, Spain, she is swept away with the sights, sounds and smells of her mother's native land. In the airport terminal, her model-gorgeous older twin cousins, Celia and Isobel, greet her enthusiastically, and she is genuinely happy to see them. But her 13-year-old cousin Nina, whose previous visit to America created huge problems with Alicia and her Pretty Committee friends, is not so enthusiastic --- and is not a welcome sight.

While in Spain, Alicia hopes to avoid Nina as much as possible. She looks forward to spending her summer shopping, clubbing and traipsing around with Celia and Isobel. She's even more excited when she reads an airport billboard announcing a competition to discover a "real Spanish beauty" to star in a music video. Alicia's mother is Spanish. Alicia is a good dancer and (she has to admit to herself) a beauty.

But being half-Spanish and half-American, Alicia doesn't seem totally comfortable in either culture. She hopes that being cast in the video will improve her status back home with Massie and the other Pretty Committee members; maybe Massie will even stop calling her Fannish (fake Spanish).

While trying to play the role of a real Spanish beauty, Alicia does her best to hide the fact that she's an American, especially when a fair-skinned British teenage boy strikes up a conversation with her in English. And cousin Nina is doing her best to ruin things as well. She shatters Alicia's self-confidence when she tells her that Celia and Isobel are just using her so they can wear her American designer-label wardrobe.

Hurt and angry, Alicia strikes back after noticing Nina wearing earrings that she stole from Alicia during her last visit to America. When the two teenagers get into a public scrap at a landmark hotel, things quickly get out of hand and they destroy an expensive statue. After Alicia's parents refuse to send a check to bail her out, she and Nina must work as maids to pay for the damages.

Instead of cleaning up on the competition, Alicia finds herself cleaning other peoples' towels. Can her Spanish vacation be rescued? And how will she pay for all the damage she has caused?

ALICIA is the third of five slim books about the members of the Pretty Committee. While the tone of the first three installments is playful and breezy, each one delivers a helpful and encouraging message for teenage girls. Alicia's story is as light and fluffy as cotton candy --- a welcome summer treat. Her message is that things aren't always what they seem, and sometimes fun and friends can be found when you least expect them.
