A Totally Hilarious Collection, A Must Have 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The first time I read this, I actually had to put the book down because I was laughing too hard. If you like Jay Leno's Headlines, then you'll love this. It's way better. All of the pictures and headlines are true, that's what makes it fun and the commentary by National Lampoon with each picture is just as funny. My favorite is the picture of the Sesame Street gang and the misprint in identifying one particular character. BUY THIS FOR A GUARANTEED LAUGH!

Simply hilarious!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Okay, if you simply must read this before buying, I guess there is nothing I can do to stop you. This is a simply hilarious book. There's literally something funny on virtually every page.
Weird and wacky photos, strange advertisements and announcements, and truly bizarre new articles are the norm here.
Truly deserves 6 stars.

Editorial Review:

Now, for the first time, fans of National Lampoon's popular True Facts books can enjoy the complete True Facts collection in one hilarious edition. Every weird and wacky photo, advertisement, announcement, and news article is in one handy volume. It's a guaranteed hit.

How to Work Like a Cat 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Cat lovers will pounce on this insightful tale of feisty felines and crazy canines caught in the crosshairs of Corporate America, so buy Karen Wormald's book, some catnip, and a few treats, and stuff them all into a friend's holiday stocking this year!

The Antidote to that "Hang in There, Baby!" Poster 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Up until now, we've only seen cats in business hanging onto a bar waiting for Friday to come. Karen Wormald's book sets the record straight by shining a positive light on feline philosophy. The book is full of wit and truth--the perfect gift for an office co-worker or a cat-loving friend or family member!

When does the calendar come out? It would provide just the right decoration for my cubicle. And my dog of a boss would have to see it every day!

Editorial Review:

In most jobs, you’re expected to work like a dog – show boundless enthusiasm for any dull and pointless task you’re assigned; act thrilled with any meager reward that’s tossed your way; play nice with the other dogs; and never question the leader of the pack. For your own sanity, you need to wise up and end this ridiculous canine charade. Cats have it all figured out. They live by their own rules. They refuse to be ignored. They’re self-assured and serene. This humorous book helps readers learn to work like a cat instead of a dog, urging headers to break free of the leash and leap up the workplace ladder.

Gift to Dad 5 out of 5 stars.

This was purchased as a gift for my Dad and he loves it.

Remembering old roads 4 out of 5 stars.

A short and decently written account of the Burma Shave phenomenon that had me, as a child from the 1940's, searching along the northwestern two-lane road sides for those pithy and succinct phrases which always ended in "Burma Shave". They never failed to delight and I carried several sayings with me well into adulthood. This book brings back the delight and gives a nicely written history of what it was all about.

Wonderful book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book brings back wonderful memories of my childhood travelling to Missouri to see my grandparents. Great to know these sayings have been preserved!

A fun book for us old-timers 5 out of 5 stars.

We've had this book for a few years and I recently ordered another as a gift for a friend in our age group (seniors). I think this book includes ALL the Burma-Shave messages, including many which were rejected by the company, some of which are funny. Anyone over 60 will remember these ubiquitous signs all over the country; we always looked forward to reading them while riding with our folks! Younger readers with an interest in America's less-serious ("folk") culture will probably enjoy it, too.

Thought Provoking Essays 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

These "Meditations" provide great thinking into how to be a more effective manager. As "Meditiations", this is not a how to cookbook on management, or checklist. There are no promises of improved customer service, or increased efficiency. Rather, by reading them, your thinking about management will improve.

Two examples on the meditations:
1 - The Abilene Paradox essay talks about a family vacation to Abilene. Nobody really wants to go there, but everyone thinks everyone else wants to go there, but is affraid to speak up. The lesson is self evident, but the story conveys it in a manner much more memorable than a directive to "Create an organization with open communication"
2 - The writings of Elliott Jaques. Harvey introduces the concept of the "Requisite Organization", an idea developed by Jaques. This highlights the imnportance of understanding complexity (as defined by the time horizon of projects one is capable of thinking of) and designing an organization where that is the key component to success. That's a deep thought in today's quarter-driven business.

Reading and pondering these meditations will make one a better manager and leader. But it isn't spoon feeding, it takes some thought as well.

Editorial Review:

Faulty decision-making can have dire consequences, and when it comes to group decisions, the challenges are even greater. Join Dr. Jerry B. Harvey as he clearly illustrates why no organization wants to find themselves goin' to Abilene.
See how group dynamics can keep individuals from stating their true beliefs for fear of isolation and separation, and how that often leads to mismanaged agreement.
You'll learn to recognize the warning signs of risky group dynamics and improve decision-making processes throughout your organization.

Horrible 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My copy of this book looks just like the one on this site, but there's no way the other 10 reviews were talking about the same book I just received. Most of the stories (I can't even call them jokes) are long and barely amusing, let alone funny. They didn't even bother to reformat the stories so they fit on the printed page. Someone literally copied emails out of Outlook and pasted them into Word.

I smiled once or twice reading this book, but this book wasn't worth my time, let alone my money.

amateurish effort 1 out of 5 stars.

Somebody just cut-and-pasted jokes together. Many were repeated and there seemed to be no organization.
Don't waste your money

I cannot believe how many spelling errors and typos there are in this book! The copywriter should be fired!

also... it is not even a funny book!

Great and Funny compilation!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Lou, Awesome job saving and publishing some of the best jokes I've EVER heard! "What Love Means to a Child" brought tears to my eyes and "Let me get my Hat" brought tears of laughter. And it just keeps going from there. Highly recommended.!!

Editorial Review:

Step aside, Bill Gates! Here comes today's real technology guru and his totally original, laugh–out–loud New York Times bestseller that looks at the approaching new millennium and boldly predicts: more stupidity ahead.

In The Dilbert Principle and Dogbert's Top Secret Management Handbook, Scott Adams skewered the absurdities of the corporate world. Now he takes the next logical step, turning his keen analytical focus on how human greed, stupidity and horniness will shape the future. Featuring the same irresistible amalgam of essays and cartoons that made Adams߰revious works so singularly entertaining, this uproariously funny, dead–on–target tome offers half–truthful, half–farcical predictions that push all of today's hot buttons – from business and technology to society and government.

● Children – they are our future, so weᱥ pretty much hosed. Tip: Grab what you can while theyᱥ still too little to stop us.

  • Human Potential – we'll finally learn to use the 90 percent of the brain we don't use today, and find out that there wasn't anything in that part.

Computers – Technology and homeliness will combine to form a powerful type of birth control.

Hotel Bemelmans, published by Overlook Press is abridged 2 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Potential purchasers of Bemelman's lovely "Hotel Bemelmans" should know that as far as I can tell all the Hotel Bemelmans books advertised on Amazon is a shortened edition of the original Hotel Bemelmans published in 1946 by Viking Press. The books advertised here were published in 2000 by Overlook Press and contain 24 stories. The Viking Press edition has 36 stories. I learned this the hard way having purchased 3 copies of the shortened Overlook Press book. Some wonderful stories have been left out. e.g. Art at the Splendide. I have the original and am looking to buy some more.

    Editorial Review:

If there is such a thing as a comfort food book, Bemelmans stories are it. His evocative tales of a grand hotel life have a reporter's eye for sensory detail, yet he always manages to bathe his world and it's lovable characters in the mood for a fairytale. Meet the girl-hungry hotel Magician, Kalakobe the African cook, Mr Sigsag, Monsieur Victor, Mespoulet, and an unforgettable cast of down but not yet out hotel employees. This book offers a feast of food writing. And once you've read one Bemelmans tale, you fall in love and want to read the lot.

    Editorial Review:

The 65th-anniversary edition of an educational classic proves its relevance in examining today's educational quandaries

McGraw-Hill first published The Saber- Tooth Curriculum in 1939, and it has remained a classic bestseller to this date. The book is just as relevant and applicable to the key questions in education today as it was when it was first published.

With tongue firmly in cheek, Peddiwell takes on the contradictions and confusion generated by conflicting philosophies of education, outlining the patterns and progression of education itself, from its origins at the dawn of time to its culmination in a ritualistic, deeply entrenched social institution with rigidly prescribed norms and procedures.

This fascinating exploration is developed within a fanciful framework of fictional lectures, given by Professor J. Abner Peddiwell, doyen in the History of Education at Petaluma State College. In a humorous fable, Peddiwell illustrates the progress of education and give valuable insights into how it could continue to develop in the decades to come.

Monkey Business 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent book to use when working with children on idioms! This book contains just about every idiom I can think of. The pictures portray the idiom as a child would think of it (i.e. dog eat dog world shows a dog eating a hot dog!) but at the very end of the book it tells what each idiom really means. I think this book is appropriate for grades 2 and up. The pictures are all wonderfully done. A great book all around!

    Editorial Review:

From a fish opening a "can of worms" to a tap-dancing octopus putting his "best foot forward," these familiar idioms are re-imagined by award-winner Wallace Edwards in hilarious and unexpected ways. To help readers "stay on the ball," the idioms are used in a sentence that accompanies each illustration, and the meaning of each idiom is explained at the end of the book. Every page is so richly illustrated that it is sometimes a challenge to find the hidden monkeys -- some are more easily spotted than others! A playful introduction to idioms, a clever eye-spy book and a gallery of stunning animal portraits, this collection is more fun than a barrel of monkeys!
