This is a very funny book and the pictures are just as funny as the humorous quotes. We bought 10 books to give out as gifts during the year.

After my hairdresser showed me her copy, I promptly bought five more, including a copy for myself, with the rest for hostess gifts. I also bought copies of two other of her books. They are delightful! The comments go so well with the marvelous illustrations. I highly recommend all of her books to raise your spirits any time.

Jane Seabrook's deatailed illustrations are warm and beautiful. I brought this book to work to show an artist friend. People who saw it in passing wanted to take a closer look. It got passed around to all my co-workers and they loved it. At home, I have it displayed on the piano. Visitors pick it up, sit down, look at every page and inquire where I got it. This book strikes a cord with everyone. Folks identify someone they know with any particular illustration and quote within the pages of this wonderfully warm, thoughtful and detailed book.

Dogs actually do breath correctly, humans don't unless taught. Dogs stretch when they sense the need, humans don't unless taught. Dogs are amazing to watch, there are many things innate to dogs (and most animals), that humans don't do, but probably should.

Breathing - Humans breath shallow inadequate, terse breaths. Why? Because we've forgotten how to breath correctly.

How do we learn to breath correctly? Well, at birth. Once born the baby should be placed on the mother's chest, before the cord is severed and taught to breath. There, feeling the breath come in and out of the mother, feeling the heart beat, the baby learns to breath. Most mothers will have to ensure THEY are breathing correctly to pass this Vital Information onto the babe.

Since dogs breath naturally, pups are brought close to the mother, umbilical chord usually intact and feel the breathing and the heartbeat and become one with the mother.

Okay... think about it. And that's precisely what this book does, it gets one thinking about things, that perhaps we normally wouldn't take the time nor have the inclination to discover.

I enjoyed the read, it was cute, informative and being a dog owner I could relate.

For many years the scientific and educational communities have wondered and worried about the possibility that semi-sane scholar-pretenders would find the means to publish a series of reference books aimed at children but filled with ludicrous misinformation. These books would be distributed through respectable channels and would inevitably find their ways into the hands and households of well-meaning families, who would go to them for facts but instead find bizarre untruths. The books would look normal enough, but would read as if written by people who have eaten too many lead-based paint chips. Giraffes? Giraffes! is the first in a proposed series of 377 reference books, all written by a couple now getting their chance to twist and tickle the brains of the impressionable. The book puts forth the following novel theories: that giraffes were not part of any evolutionary chain, but came here from Neptune, by way of very long (but convenient and fast) escalators; that giraffes are expert dancers, but become angry if asked about their dancing; that giraffes control over 90 percent of what we see in mirrors; and that the Giraffe navy is as strong as ever, contrary to recent claims in the popular press.

If you love cats or have a sense of humour you will love these songs. I wasn't too keen on the first one (The cat came Back) as the owner was a bit drastic. The song My Grandmothers cat, who is spoilt rotten, contains a bit of advice for all pet owners. Other songs that reflect the whims and fancies of my own cat abound. e.g. I wanna go out.
Some of the cat stories are parodies of some of the popular songs of the 50's and 60's and also a delightful use of some famous classics in the story of the dog and cat.
I can really recommend this CD. It is a laught. My Friends all demand to listen it in my car and think it is great.

This is a great "anytime" gift to just let someone know you are thinking about them, and in this case a sibling living in another state who loves cats. It might also be a good prank for someone who did not like cats and frequently makes comments to that effect, but I haven't tested that approach. They definitely work if you want to "make" someone's day.

A Handsome Volume Completes This Post-doc's Library 5 out of 5 stars.

Somewhat reminiscent of Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, this massive tome puzzled me for years until Davis' macabre vision of one's relation to oneself finally struck me; that with each abuse of Odie, Garfield moves closer and closer to the pro-active diad that is John and Odie. Eventually the suicide-prone, self-loathing cat which we as a society find quite the jester winds his way through the high road to alienation, much like a Puccini character. The subtle irony of Garfield's monumental epiphany finally places Garfield at the pinnacle of the newly formed triumvirate, and finally, societal acceptance. In this way, Garfield becomes so cynical that he adopts an anti-cynical work ethic in order to preach his intellectual treatise to the masses, thus eventually compromising his own moral barometer in the worst way. Like Icarus, Garfield flies too close to the brilliant heat of personal ulra-rationalism, and winds up destroying himself via his self-enforced taboo of social acceptance. Brilliant.

My seven year old has convinced me to like it 4 out of 5 stars.

I have never been a big Garfield fan (Walt Kelly is more my style), but my seven year old found a "Fat Cat Three Pack" at a used bookstore and got hooked so we have been buying them at Amazon. The humor is acceptably challenging for a 7 year old, and my son, being more visually and artistically inclined than I am, has managed to show me that the strip does have fairly creative sight gags and design. I notice it more in the fat cat three packs than in the newspaper.

These books are great when you have a couple-hour car drive. I try to keep a couple in reserve for that purpose. Big format, font, and simple graphics means they can be read in the car without too much fatigue, and it keeps a seven year old (and 13 year old in a pinch) entertained.

My son recently became interested in Garfield, and he just loves the books. Its fun and very easy reading, so he enjoys it, while still practicing his reading skills. Its the best of both worlds! The saga of Garfield, Odie, and Jon continues. This dramatic and moving yet highly disturbing portrait of late-nineties domestic suburban sexual denial forces the reader to delve into his/her own tortured sexual psyche, much like Catherine and Heathcliff but as a trio each exploring their own unrequieted desire. The tension is unbearable, and Garfield's repeated replacement of food for sexual yearning is telling of late twentieth-century sexuality. Odie's alienation as a result of Garfield's spurning for the love of his inanimate replacement for Jon, in the form of Pookie, is obviously a compelling metaphor for post-colonial AIDS isolation. Alone in the confusing mire of mixed signals that is their home, poor Garfield has no choice but to seek solace in the soft, safe, squishy bosom of Pookie, denying the pain and self-loathing so apparent in his everyday encounters. Odie, much like Hillary to Bill, pointlessly attempts again and again to win the affections of a reckless, wanton, yet powerful force who has become consumed by his meager life, ironically encouched in power. Jon's unrealized quest for gratification is symbolic of the fall of Communism and is a clever representation of the fall of the wall and the troubles of subsequent unification. Supplanted in a landscape of repression and denial, our three protagonists seek comfort in their base desires: coffee becomes the drug of choice, providing escape from the hell that is life, much like today's "raver" youth seeking comfort in "ecstasy" and "techno". Woe to he/she who proceeds beyond the cover of this prophetic tome! Another masterpiece accomplishment by Davis, sure to keep him in literary courses of the future.
