We use this book in our kindergarten class. The students just laugh and laugh over the pictures of animals wearing clothes.

Great Read 5 out of 5 stars.

I work in a Nursery and I bought this book to read to the children. They loved it! They thought it was hilarious.

Cute title 3 out of 5 stars.

Cute title but the book was a little too old for my two year old grandaughter. Not sure she got the concept of animals wearing or not wearing clothes.

Very nice book for any child 4 out of 5 stars.

I really liked this book and bought it for my newphew, who is 4. I thought it was silly and somewhat unlike other books I had read. There are simple words or phrases that he can possibly learn to read. There are cute drawings in the book. It gets the imagination flowing.

Editorial Review:

Animals should definitely not act like people.

...because it would be foolish for a fish, so silly for a sheep, and preposterous for a panda -- as Ron Barrett's wonderfully detailed drawings show.

This book will show children a new way of looking at animals and people, even as they laugh.

It's a cat calendar......... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

After careful checking yes, this has ALL the dates of the year -- what more do you expect from a calendar?? Seriously, if you love cats you'll get multiple laughs from this calendar -- every day has it's own Bad Cat and any cat owner (or, keeper, since no one OWNS a cat!) will recognize some of these cats --- and their attitudes. If you love cats, and have a desk calendar, this is certainly one to consider. And if you KNOW someone who fits that description, it's a fun inexpensive Christmas present for them!

Editorial Review:

Bad Cat is paws-down the most offensive cat calendar ever—and the funniest, packed with day after day of inexcusable feline behavior. Here are hundreds of kitties gone crazy: the lethargic and the clumsy, the goofy, the indifferent, the cross-eyed, and the plain ol' mean. Inspired by the #1 New York Times bestselling book this calendar includes Bad Cats in Show Business, Feline Faux Paws, Bad Cat Parole Violations, and Bad Cat Fortune Cookies (Fortune: You will feed me or die).

Animal Farm is instructive for our presidential election. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

2008 is the ideal time to apply the principles that we have learned from Animal Farm and apply them to November's 2008 Presidential election. Just as Napolean, the pig, instigated a rebellion against the owner of the farm (Jones) by talking about how great things will be once the animals ruled the farm, today we are told by the Obama Democrats that once Bush and the Republicans are thrown off the farm (Washington), that all will be well, that things will look wonderful, and that none of us will ever be hungry again. In Animal Farm, though, the animals were far worse off after Mr. Jones was kicked off the farm. Like Obama, Napolean also did not have any experience in running a farm, but this did not stop him from stating that he would be more competent and able to handle the farm. Further, once Napolean took charge of the farm, the interests of the other animals started to decline more and more. He started to remove any sense of democratic principles by eliminating the need for public comment and strongly took action against any potential dissent. This is exactly where the Obama Democrats want to take our country--first, by stating that they (and he alone) can manage the country -- even though there is no experience to suggest that he ought to, and secondly, by eliminating any form of dissent by destroying talk radio and also by heavily regulating and taxing the internet in order to suppress the one free and open medium that is available to counter their message. The lesson of Animal Farm is clear: those who claim to provide us with utopia on earth often will create hell instead through dictatorship, centralization of authority, and a desire to obtain power for power's sake. If we learn the lessons of Animal Farm, our nation will be far better off.

Editorial Review:

As ferociously fresh as it was more than a half century ago, this remarkable allegory of a downtrodden society of overworked, mistreated animals, and their quest to create a paradise of progress, justice, and equality is one of the most scathing satires ever published. As we witness the rise and bloody fall of the revolutionary animals, we begin to recognize the seeds of totalitarianism in the most idealistic organization; and in our most charismatic leaders, the souls of our cruelest oppressors.

With a new forward by Gore Vidal.

In the Pearls Navy 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Crocs and more crocs. This is a collection, which means it will eventually find its way into a treasury. Still, I cannot wait to buy the latest Pearls. The comics covered are from April 7, 2006 to May 13,2007. This included the touching Daddy Croc moments. The interactions between the Dad and Son croc are some of my favorite in the series, including when Son starts dating the zebra next door. For some reason, a croc also goes to college. For me, this was a must have, but I am a Pearls fan. If your favorite cartoon is the Family Circus, then you can marvel over the grown up versions.

Editorial Review:

The original bad boys of the comics page are back in this wildly entertaining seventh collection of Pearls Before Swine comic strips by Stephan Pastis.

You know the lineup: Mucho macho Rat, who's ready to get down with anyone he can; sensitive Pig, who can't give up his disco dreams; Zebra, who will survive; and Goat, the brains of the outfit. Violent, unstable Guard Duck and the Crocs next door round out this fabulous cast. The dark, twisted adventures continue as these characters dance the night away.

Editorial Review:

"Pearls is the hottest comic in the newspaper business these days." --Raleigh News amd Observer

Named Best Comic Strip of the Year by the National Cartoonists Society in 2004 and 2007, Pearls Before Swine is regarded by fans and critics alike as a thoughtful commentary on humanity's pitiable plight.

Stephan Pastis sketches this nuanced comic strip tale, which features the arrogant, self-centered, and totally hilarious Rat, who leads his four-legged friends through misadventure after misadventure. Joining him for the journey are Pig, the slow but good-hearted conscience of the strip; Goat, the voice of reason that often goes unheard; and Zebra and the eternally inept Crocodiles who pursue him. Together this mindful menagerie mocks the flaws and shortcomings of human nature through Pastis's cynically biting wit.

  • The third Pearls Before Swine treasury, this book combines all the cartoons from Da Brudderhood of Zeeba Zeeba Eata and The Sopratos, along with annotations by Pastis.
  • From courtroom antics to references of other cartoon strips, Pastis's strip is a fresh presence on the comic pages.

Editorial Review:

Calvin and Hobbes are ready to pounce back on bestseller lists everywhere with this all-new collection of daily and color Sunday cartoons. Reprising the wide-open landscape format of last year's collection, The Days Are Just Packed, Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat chronicles another segment of the multifarious adventures of this wild child and his faithful, but skeptical, friend. If the best cartoons compel readers to identify themselves within the funny frames, then all who enjoy Calvin and Hobbes are creative, imaginative, and ... bad, bad, bad! Calvin, the irascible little boy with the stuffed tiger who comes to life are a pair bound for trouble. Boring school lessons become occasions for death-defying alien air battles, speeding snow sled descents elecit philosophical discussions on the meaning of life, and Hobbe's natural inclination to pounce on his little friend wreaks havoc on Calvin's sense of security. Calvin's the kid we all wish we'd been. Sassy, imaginative, far more verbal than his parents can manage, Calvin is the quintessential bad boy - and the boy we love to see. He terrorizes little Susie, offers "Candid Opinions" from a neighborhood stand, and questions his parents' authority. "What assurance do I have that your parenting isn't screwing me up?" he demands. Calvin and Hobbes manages to say what needs to be said about childhood and life: "Eww, mud," says Calvin. "Look at this gooshy, dirty, slimy, thick, wet mud... Bleecch... Talk about a kid magnet!" Created by Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes has quickly become a favorite in more than 2,300 daily and Sunday newspapers. Recent readership polls show the strip as No. 1 in the Kansas City Star, Salt Lake City Deseret News, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dallas Morning News, Akron Beacon Journal, and Schedectady Daily Gazette.

Ugh! Can't stand this book 1 out of 5 stars.

Not only is this book really boring, but my kids start jumping on the bed and go nuts every time I read it. It makes them hyper when I'm trying to get them to settle down for the evening. I'll never read it to them again.

absolute favorite night time book for my kids.. 5 out of 5 stars.

my little girl will ask me, long story or short story? depending on what time it is and how tired I am is how we decide. When it's late, we always go for a short story, and she always picks this one. My girl and my son gather on the bed and read our favorite book. We've read it so often, they'll recite the words as we read. Always puts us in a good mood and gets us ready for bed. What a joy!.

Great bedtime book. 5 out of 5 stars.

This is such a great classic book. I would read this to my 2 year old and ask her "what does the doctor say?" and she would mumble "doctor waid no mo moonkey jupin on bed". So cute...

great book 4 out of 5 stars.

From fantastic to mediocre 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Let me get this out from the start...I have been buying the Get Fuzzy books since number one came out. Saw it at a bookstore, wondered what it was and just started reading it. Loved it the minute I did. So, I have been following this dysfunctional family for the past 7 years, enjoying it immensely while turning other people on to it (it was not running in our newspapers at the time). What has now turned me off to the strip are 2 factors: 1.) The mean attitude given to Bucky and 2.) the artwork.

in the early days, Bucky was just a dumb cat with a lot of attitude. This made for some hilarious situations. He made Satch make him soccer balls, made stink bug cookies, had his own cable show, wrecked the house making "art", attacked and got owned by a ferret, chimp and chicken. I read and re-read these all the time. But starting with Scrum Bums to Movie Contract, Buck has been given a cruel streak with Satchel. Numerous times he implied he wanted to off or get rid or Satchel (which he has done in the past but just not so seriously). His physical attacks on Satchel have also increased. I was just reading online the strips from the past week (8/4/08-8/8/08) in which Bucky sets up an office supply shop and tries to sell Satchel a "3 punch hole" (complete with punches to Satchel) and "punch-it notes" (again hitting Satchel even though he didn't want it). This kind of needless and cheap violence to try to get laughs is both unfunny and sad.

My second point is the artwork. Again, back with the first half of the books (especially books one and two), Bucky looked just liked a siamese cat, Satchel looked just like a wrinkle-dog mix. Slowly, their distinct features were evened out (I guess to make them easier to draw?) and have now become shallow images of their former selves. Now, I know this kind of thing very well. I have collections of Bloom County, Calvin and Hobbes, Sherman's Lagoon, Zits, Foxtrot, etc. ALL of them start out crude and become more defined. Seeing Opus now in his own strip is seeing an abomination compared to his Bloom County heyday. Again, which is why I did not buy the Outland and Opus books. But the sad and ironic part of this is that Bucky Katt now looks nothing like a cat, more like a monkey! They very thing in the whole world that he wants to eat most off all is what he has evolved to. Oh the irony.

Anyways, sorry for the tirade. This book is funny at times, sad at times and overall just ok. It will be the final Get Fuzzy book I will buy.

Editorial Review:

"The humor is a wickedly authentic blend of young-professional-bachelor shtick and pets-from-hell high jinks. . . . And, perhaps best of all, the strip keeps getting better." --Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

Get Fuzzy was named Best Comic Strip of the Year in 2002 by the National Cartoonists Society.

Satchel, the Shar-pei-Lab mix in the Get Fuzzy family who actually believes what TV commercials say, and his owner-housemate Rob Wilco, a single, somewhat befuddled, Red Sox-best-sellers obsessed ad exec, endure the scourge of their daily existence, Bucky Katt. Whether baiting the ferret down the hall for battle, gorging on rubber bands (and the ensuing gastric consequences), or joining the gun repair club, Bucky continuously tests the patience and endurance of his hapless mates.

Three Get Fuzzy books, Bucky Katt's Big Book of Fun, Blueprint for Disaster, and Say Cheesy, have been New York Times best-sellers.

Flawed Dogs: The Year End Leftovers at the Piddleton "Last Chance" Dog Pound

I bought this as a gift for someone at work who recently rescued a dog from the shelter, who wasn't physically perfect. I knew they'd appreciate this book!

A masterpiece for dog lovers -- and everybody else 5 out of 5 stars.

`Flawed dogs' need love too

Review by Guy P. Harrison, author of 50 Reasons People Give for Believing in a God

Very few have fancy pedigrees and you won't see any of them in the Westminster Dog Show. Their limbs may not be of ideal proportions and their fur spoiled by a grease spot or two, but they are no less alive and no less in need of love. That's the message of "Flawed Dogs", a wonderful book for all ages by Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Berkley Breathed.

This unique and hilarious book is a treasure that is sure to be a hit with everyone, not just dog lovers. This masterpiece is a mock catalog featuring dogs who are doing time behind bars, hoping for a home. Each dog profiled has an unusual background story. Sadly, something is "wrong" with each one of them so they ended up at the dog pound. The dogs are shown in full Berkeley Breathed glory, with his usual unforgettable style. The art is paired with passionate poetry that is a pitch-perfect. It's not easy to make a reader laugh and cry simultaneously, but this book has the ability to do just that. Because of their "flaws", the dogs face eventual execution--unless some noble human comes along who is able to see beyond their imperfections and recognize some trace of value behind sad and lonely eyes.

"Flawed Dogs" is funny to the level of genius but it also succeeds at delivering a serious message. First you giggle and then you find yourself thinking about how wrong it is for some societies to allow many dogs to reproduce unrestricted to the point where some must be killed long before their time. According to Breathed, about half of all dogs in US shelters are eventually put down. As he points out so well in his book, it's not color, size, shape or behavior that is a dog's fatal flaw. The flaw of not being loved is the only one that matters.

Adults should not be misled by the goofy and colorful illustrations into thinking that this book is for children only. I originally bought this book for my children and, although I have read it to them many times, it has never found its way into their possession. Today it rests safely in one of my personal bookcases, alongside thick philosophy and science books--many of which pale in comparison. Parents should not worry too much about the theme being too disturbing for younger children. Yes, it may raise a few questions about stray dogs seen running the streets, but that would be a good thing, I believe. The more we talk about the problem of "unwanted" dogs (and cats), the more likely we are to do a better job of preventing unnecessary deaths.

Overall, in spite of the serious nature of its underlying theme, "Flawed Dogs" is an upbeat and funny book. Breathed's dogs are unforgettable characters and dog owners probably will recognize a little bit of their dog in a few of them. Breathed is a rare talent and "Flawed Dogs" ranks as one of his best efforts. I've been reading it to my kids for four years and they aren't sick of it yet. That should tell you something.

Other Berkeley Breathed books I highly recommend are: "Edwurd Fudwupper Fibbed Big"; "The Last Basselope: One Ferocious Story"; "Goodnight Opus; and "A Wish for Wings That Work: An Opus Christmas Story".
