The World's Funniest Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book takes place on a ranch in Texas. The characters are Hank, Drover, Loper, the coyotes, and Bruno. Hank is the boss for guarding the ranch at night. He watches out for the chickens. But Hank got sick of the ranch. He tries to find the kill of the chickens, but eats one of the dead ones instead. Then he went to live with the coyotes and still tries to find the chicken killers. Does Hank go back to the ranch? You will have to read the book for yourself to find out. I really like this book because I got to see the author give a talk and read out of one of his books.

Editorial Review:

Relive Hank's earliest adventures in this special anniversary edition, which features the original Hank the Cowdog adventure-the book that set this grassroots publishing phenomenon to seed twenty years ago. As an added bonus, it also includes the first two stories ever written about Hank-short stories that have never before been published. Now young readers can see where Hank really got his start!

A nice laugh, of course. I don't suppose that many people thought that Sharon Creech's Love That Dog was in particular need of a sequel. It was a perfectly nice book but a succinct and, in many ways, self-contained verse novel. A slim little book, ideal for those reluctant readers who need to read a book for class but don't want anything "too long" (oh, insidious phrase). It also happens to be one of the few verse novels out there that justifies the format, rather than just appearing as a series of randomly broken up sentences. Now Creech has followed up that acclaimed bit of verse with Hate That Cat, a logical extension to the previous title. In the first book Jack dealt with the death of his dog with the help of poetry. In the second, we learn more about his family and about some felines that challenge his resolve.

When last we saw Jack he had learned to love the poet Walter Dean Myers and to accept that his dead dog was gone. Now it's an entirely new school year and Surprise! Miss Stretchberry is unexpectedly his teacher again. Of course, she's not too pleased with the series of anti-cat poems he's been writing lately. Lately a fat black cat has been terrorizing Jack at his bus stop and he is in a full-on anti-feline mode as a result. But there may be some surprises for Jack coming up. Miss Stretchberry is introducing him to concepts like onomatopoeia and synonyms. Though his Uncle Bill (a college prof) is pooh-poohing what constitutes a "real" poem, Jack is able to use his poetry to discuss everything from his mother's deafness to an unexpected Christmas present and an even more unexpected friend.

The novel works, in large part, because it resolves unresolved issues from the first title. By the end of Love That Dog, Jack sort of came to terms with his deceased friend. What's more, he became a fan of poetry. But he never really got to the point where he'd want another pet. His fear is palpable, particularly when he writes "even if you had a nice cat / that you loved / it might run outside / and into the street / and get / squished / by a car / going fast / with many miles to go / before it sleeps." Now his teacher and his parents conspire to get him another pet and, what's more, one that's as unlike his old one as possible. That would normally be a recipe for ootsy cutesy-ness, but Creech is cleverer than that. For one thing, the evil black cat that enjoys scratching and hissing at Jack whenever it has a chance to do so, is mildly redeemed by the story's end, but in a grudging kind of way. I liked that. It was easier than ending the book with everything sunshine and roses.

The poetry selection in this book is just as lovely as it was in its predecessor. There's a nice bit of Poe, some William Carlos Williams, T.S. Eliot, Valerie Worth, Christopher Myers, and others. And this time I remembered to keep flipping back and forth between the story and the poems in the back of the book as I read. Not everyone's going to know to do that, you know. Footnotes that mention that you can find the poems Jack's discussing at the title's end would have been distracting, certainly, but I still think they could have been interwoven into the text. When a class reads this book together, the teacher is able to tell them to read the back of the book. But when a kid is reading it on his or her own, they won't know until it's almost too late. Fortunately Jack's just a great kid to read about. You can't help but love his ever hopeful "Is he alive?" or "Is she alive?" queries to the long long dead poets he regularly encounters (little wonder he's such a Walter Dean Myers fan).

My co-worker started to read this book and then eventually had to stop. "I think I need to reread the first book," she admitted, which sounds pretty ridiculous when you consider how slim these stories are. But after a while I could see why she'd say that. When I read the part of the book that said that Jack's mother was deaf, I couldn't remember if that had been mentioned in Love That Dog and if it was important or not. The initial introduction is almost a throwaway line ("My mother likes my short lines. She runs her fingers down them and then taps her lips once, twice."). After a while, though, Creech works this new story into the whole kerschmozzle and it pans out very well.

It is admittedly a bit convenient that Miss Stretchberry would just happen to be teaching a new grade and that that grade would just happen to have Jack in it again. But then it's not as if that sort of thing doesn't happen from time to time. And though I do not think that there is any way Ms. Creech can continue Jack's story any further (sequel ideas: Mind That Turtle? Tolerate That Budgie?) she has done a very good job at justifying his further adventures. For fans of the original book, Hate That Cat is going to simply provide more of what they want. And for those who've never read Love That Dog it will still resonate as a great book of sounds, inflections, images, and just plain n' simple fun words. A great little book.

to read. It is a fine gift to give someone at Christmas.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and Uncle John is back with a new compilation of Christmas past and present. Packed with as much fun stuff as an elf’s Christmas stocking, this anthology includes all the legends, lore, trivia, and history Uncle John didn’t have room for in the first Christmas collection. Highlights include why Figgy pudding was banned in Boston, the story of snow globes, the Christmas pickle, Bad Santas, and more!

In a wave of nosthalgia, I bought this Shel Silvertein book. As a little kid I loved "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and the other works. This has to be the best, though.

While obviously it is a children's book, adults love it, too. It tickles the tongue and the spirit. When I took it to the office we took turns reading from it and laughed silly. It really lightened the atmosphere.

Also a warning: You will me tompelled, no cempted to wange you chords after beading this rook.

Bad Cats only bigger 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Just like the desk sized calendar, this wall calendar of Bad cats is a great gift for someone who loves cats, or for yourself! There's room for keeping note of appointments (not a lot, but some), and every month has one main Bad cat, with each day having it's own much smaller Bad cat with sayings, comments or 'faux paws'. This helps you keep track of the days -- but for keeping track of how many times you'll smile or laugh out loud you are on your own!

Editorial Review:

Sweet? Nope. Lovable? Uh-uh. Cuddly? Not a chance. You know how cats are the most popular pets in the country? Well, these are the exceptions. Adapted from the hugely popular New York Times bestseller Bad Cat, this calendar features hundreds of off-kilter kitties in terrifying full color.

Oh-so-oblivious to their own offensiveness, here are sneering cats, snarling cats, spaced-out cats, intoxicated cats, overfed cats, scrawny cats. Cats fraternizing with canines, cats in silly hats, cats licking unmentionable places, cats dancing like lunatics. And lots of little kittens who've totally overplayed the "cute" card. Can you say "b-a-a-a-d"?

Save your money 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have always been a big fan of the "imponderables" genre, but I had never read any by author David Feldman, an apparently prolific author in the that specific field. I thought the best place to start would be with his first Imponderalbes book, "Why Don't Cats Like to Swim?," which had apparently been originally published with the title, "Imponderables." I further assumed that an author's first venture into this genre would be the most interesting in that there was a high probability of an array of interesting subjects that eventually led to his writing the book. Well, I was wrong!

I finished this book in record time because I discovered that I couldn't care less about many of the alleged imponderables that were discussed. Really, who really cares about some of the following:

Why does root beer taste flatter than coke?
Which fruits are in Juicy Fruit chewing gum?
If trailer parks didn't exist, would tornadoes exist?
Why don't we ever see money from pay phones collected?
What is the purpose of the little slits in sugar cube wrappers?
What is a minor credit card?
Why are so many milk packages difficult to open and close?

If those and similar questions intrique you, you will probably enjoy this book.

About the only section that I found truly interesting was the section describing how stage hypnotists do their thing.

Perhaps his subsequent works got better in that the author solicites potential questions from his readership to be dealt with in later books. I'll never find out.

Editorial Review:

Why does an "X" stand for a kiss?
Which fruits are in Juicy Fruit® gum?
Why do people cry at happy endings?
Why do you never see baby pigeons?

Pop-culture guru David Feldman demystifies these topics and so much more in Why Don't Cats Like to Swim? -- the unchallenged source of answers to civilization's most perplexing questions. Part of the Imponderables® series, Feldman's book arms readers with information about everyday life -- from science, history, and politics to sports, television, and radio -- that encyclopedias, dictionaries, and almanacs just don't have. Where else will you learn what makes women open their mouths when applying mascara?

My Dog May Be a Genius 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I preordered this book for my Grandson who is almost 2 - I actually bought it because I liked the title but not only did it have a great title, the book is absolutely FANTASTIC! His mother loves reading it to him, his grandmother loves reading it to him and little Noah stays interested while it is being read to him. I highly recommend this book, especially because of the rhyming style that offers a pleasant variation from regular story books.

Editorial Review:

Have you ever encountered an underwater marching band, a pig in a bathing suit, a pet orangutan, or a witch in a hardware store? Have you ever sat with a skunk in a courtroom, shopped for a dinosaur, or conversed with a Bupple, a Wosstrus, a Violinnet, or a Celloon? You will have, once you've read this exuberant collaboration from Jack Prelutsky and his "partner in crime"* James Stevenson.

The "reigning czars of silliness"* have once again teamed up to bring readers an irresistible collection of poems that will have tongues twisting, imaginations soaring, and sides aching with laughter. The result is genius, indeed.

A must for "Doxie" lovers everywhere! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

If you love Dachshunds or know anyone that does, this is the book to get or give as a gift! The pictures are absolutley adorable and funny - puppies, different colors, different poses, costumes - very sweet!
The text, written as a "doxie" describes the dog very accurately and uses several quotes in just the right places.
A great book for "Doxie" lovers and a great little "pick me up" book for anyone else!

Little book, Big fun! 5 out of 5 stars.

How can you go wrong with a photographic book about dachshunds?
Author Melissa Sovet has captured the long and short of the spirited breed. There are photos of doxies with bling, doxies being naughty, as well as doxies being charioted by working dogs.

If you love doxies you need this book!

Editorial Review:

Guts, spunk, nerve, grit - all describe the short-statured and decidedly spirited dachshund. Herr Schnappsie, a venerable doxie with moxie in his own right, relates what being a dachshund is all about accompanied by hilarious color photographs of every type of dachshund. Photos are paired with text on being plucky, dauntless, and as tough (and sweet) as a doxie.

i have the 2008 version & can't wait to see the new one! this is the funniest calendar i have ever seen, even if you don't appreciate dogs & the strange things they do (and the strange things their owners do to them). the pictures are only half of the fun--the captions are hysterical too.

Editorial Review:

Looking for cute and cuddly? Man's best friend? You’ve got the wrong calendar, pal. Adapted from the howlingly funny New York Times bestselling book, Bad Dog is a disturbing look at what happens when dogs go off the deep end. Just try to avert your eyes from this motley parade: slobbery dogs, spoiled dogs, smelly dogs, inappropriately dressed dogs. Dogs in need of an attitude adjustment, and dogs desperate for a shred of self-respect. With Daily Affirmations and Bad Dog Early Warning Signs (#92: Dog feigns neck injury to get out of obedience school).

SICK SICK series 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Bunnies are sweet, loving, and innocent creatures and anyone who could write books with this sort of theme is a very sick person as are everyone who would find it funny!! If it was about children there would be a major outcry over it,but because its not its ok. Animals are just as helpless as children so if you wouldn't want books like this about children don't condone it about bunnies or any other animals!!

Editorial Review:

Rabbits. We'll never quite know why, but sometimes they decide they've just had enough of this world- and that's when they start getting inventive. The Book of Bunny Suicides follows over one hundred bunnies as they find ever more outlandish ways to do themselves in. From an encounter with the business end of Darth Vader's lightsaber, to supergluing themselves to a diving submarine, to hanging around underneath a loose stalactite, these bunnies are serious about suicide.

Illustrated in a stark and simple style, The Book of Bunny Suicides is a collection of hilarious and outrageous cartoons that will appeal to anyone in touch with their evil side.
