Editorial Review:

The book that Janet Maslin of The New York Times has called "indispensable" and "a transfixing study of American mores and manners that happens to incorporate boundless laughs, too" is finally available in paperback—fully updated and featuring a brand new introduction by Adam Gopnik.

Organized by decade, with commentary by some of the magazine's finest writers, this landmark collection showcases the work of the hundreds of talented artists who have contributed cartoons over the course ofThe New Yorker's eight-two-year history. From the early cartoons of Peter Arno, George Price and Charles Addams to the cutting-edge work of Alex Gregory, Matthew Diffee and Bruce Eric Kaplan (with stops along the way for the genius of Charles Barsotti, Roz Chast, Jack Ziegler, George Booth, and many others), the art collected here forms, as David Remnick puts it in his Foreword, "the longest-running popular comic genre in American life."

Throughout the book, brief overviews of each era's predominant themes—from the Depression and nudity to technology and the Internet, highlight various genres of cartoons and shed light on our pastimes and preoccupations. Brief profiles and mini-portfolios spotlight the work of key cartoonists, including Arno, Chast, Ziegler, and others.

The DVD-ROM included with the book is what really makes the "Complete Cartoons" complete. Compatible with most home computers and easily browsable, the disk contains a mind-boggling 70,363 cartoons, indexed in a variety of ways. Perhaps you'd like to find all the cartoons by your favorite artist. Or maybe you'd like to look up the cartoons that ran the week you were born, or all of the cartoons on a particular subject. Of course, you can always begin at the beginning, February 21, 1925, and experience the unprecedented pleasure of reading through every single cartoon ever published in The New Yorker.

Enjoy this one-of-a-kind protrait of American life over the past eight decades, as captured by the talented pens and singular outlooks of the masters of the cartoonist's art.

Hooray indeed! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 6 year old son and I loved this new addition to Tedd Arnold's Fly Guy series. When Buzz's football team is short a player, his pet Fly Guy tries to help out. But can a fly really play football?

I won't spoil the ending (which had my son rolling on the floor laughing), except to say that Fly Guy helps score the winning touchdown in the big game using the kind of trick play you'd expect to find in Arnold's irreverent playbook. Another wonderful and fun book for the early reader!

Awesome book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful book that can be enjoyed by young children who can read at a first grade level. I chose this series because I wanted a chapter book that my young students could actually read. The series is great and the humorous stories keep the young readers interested. The books have become the classroom favorites.

Editorial Review:

"Flies can't play football," says the coach. But Fly Guy and Buzz are determined to prove him wrong. New readers will experience both pride and delight as they read the simple text and look at the funny pictures of Fly Guy trying to kick a football, go out for a pass, and tackle his friend Buzz. In the end Fly Guy scores and gets to do his hilarious touchdown dance.

Hooray for Fly Guy!

The first book in the Fly Guy series, Hi! Fly Guy, is a Theodor Geisel Honor Book.

Editorial Review:

Not since Kliban has there been a cat book this edgy. Edgy as in Bosco, the demonic Siamese with the out-of-focus eyes, razor-sharp fangs, and his own idea of Feng Shui. Or the half-shaved freak named Mr. Fliegel, who looks like a cross between a poodle and a lion. Mr. Fliegel shrugs and says, "Chicks dig me." Or Kato, resplendent in his Three Musketeers outfit: "One for all, blah blah blah . . . now just get me out of this @#%&ing costume!" Or Clark, whose hobby is eating other cats' food. Tina, who somehow always just misses the litter box . . . sucker. And the guilty-looking Clarence, caught with a Barbie doll in flagrante delicto. Clarence's defiant defense: "She was naked when I came in. . . ."

Just as Kliban got us to think about the cat as something far more interesting than an innocuous house pet, and Suzy Becker taught us that cats possess a Buddha-like wisdom (together Cat and All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat have more than 2.6 million copies in print), Jim Edgar reveals yet another facet of the ever-mesmerizing animal. Brooding, deranged, antisocial, these are kitties with attitude and borderline personality problems--ah, but what hilarious fun it is to read about them. All 244 photographed in terrifying full color in their most unflattering moments, with a quote plus vital stats: name, breed, age, and hobby. Get to know them. Then see if you can ever forget them.

Editorial Review:

Stories from the National Public Radio archives celebrate our relationship with our furry, feathered, and sometimes scaly friends.

What’s a "driveway moment"? It's when you're so captivated by a story you're hearing on NPR that you stay in your car to hear it to the end—even if you're sitting in your driveway with the motor running. For years, listeners have written to NPR to describe such moments. Now animal lovers especially will want to make sure their tanks are full.

Meet a dog who's addicted to toads, a chatty parrot who tells the truth, the Stupid Pet Tricks coordinator for the Late Show with David Letterman, and a professional dog walker whose day features 14 canines and a lot of fresh air. Learn about a dog's life in Vietnam (where dog meat is a delicacy) and the heartrending search for lost pets following Hurricane Katrina. Visit a retirement community for thoroughbred racehorses and the Wait Wait petting zoo, where cows moo with British accents and mice dislike cheese. Bid farewell to a cat named Miss Pudding and welcome three orphaned hummingbirds home.

Heard on All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Talk of the Nation, and Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me!, hosted by Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep, these stories will make you laugh out loud and shed a tear or two.

Editorial Review:

A Christmas treat 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As the mom of two Golden Retrievers I am biased in favor of Trixie. I received this book as a gift at the same time that I found that my cat of 13 years had terminal cancer. The warm, sweet tone of this book was a great comfort to me; I kept it at my desk and read it when I needed a distraction. I also gave five copies of this book as Christmas gifts, with great feedback.

This book is about Christmas, and does have some Christian overtones, such as a couple of specific mentions of Jesus, which might make it inappropriate for some. With that single caveat, very highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

CHRISTMAS IS GOOD! Is an irresistible stocking stuffer full of furry tidbits to maximize yuletide fun â€" including caroling with cats (if necessary!), baking tasty sausage-peanut butter Christmas biscuits, and making yourself fluffier for all the holiday parties.

Trixie has plenty of advice for sniffing out the true spirit of Christmas, keeping the holidays stress free, and finding the perfect gift â€" you can never go wrong with hot dogs!

Editorial Review:

Rat, Pig, Zebra, and Goat, the central characters of Pearls Before Swine, are back in their new book, Sgt. Piggy's Lonely Hearts Club Comic, the first Pearls Before Swine treasury-supersized for your enjoyment.

But this is no ordinary cartoon treasury. Like the influential Beatles album that inspired the book's title, Sgt. Piggy is full of surprises. In addition to collecting in one volume all of the Pearls cartoons that appeared in BLTs Taste So Darn Good and This Little Piggy Stayed Home, cartoonist Stephan Pastis takes readers on a VIP backstage tour of one of the most successful new comic strips in newspapers today.

In Sgt. Piggy, Pastis explains the genesis of Pearls (hint: it didn't begin at an artist's easel), why he was initially reluctant to show it to newspaper syndicates (and the surprising reason he changed his mind), the unexpected responses from readers to his work (oh, the letters), which Pearls strips worked and which ones didn't (and how he would have corrected the ones that didn't). The result is a rare and revealing glimpse into the world of Rat and Pig, Goat and Zebra. Full of humor and insight, sardonic asides and unexpected truths, Sgt. Piggy's Lonely Hearts Club Comic is a book that comics fans everywhere can enjoy anytime-even when they're 64.

Easily the funniest baby animal book ever. Ever. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I picked this book up thinking "Oh, puppy!" Then I read the title. After 3 pages I was laughing so hard I was trying not to snort. Then my husband joined me and similarly lost it. I snorted about half way through the book, causing most of the store to look at me. When asked by said husband how much the book was I replied, "It doesn't matter, whatever it is is worth it." I plan on sending out all these wonderful little post cards, and then buying another book to keep around forever. If you have issues with confrontation, or just really dislike the people you know, this books for you.

Editorial Review:

Avoid the messy confrontations that accompany delivering bad news personally and let one of these cute baby animal postcards deliver the devastating message for you.

Are you afraid to tell your girlfriend that her ass looks fat? Do you need to explain to your nephew that dreams don't come true? Why not let a cute, fuzzy bunny do it for you! We understand how hard it is to tell someone that you're sleeping with his wife, so let a photograph of a duckling sleeping on a teddy bear soften the blow. These perforated postcards answer all of your cowardly prayers—you'll finally be able to tell the truth without ever conquering your fear of confrontation. Let these adorable baby animals supply a silver lining to any bad situation and avoid, a long, tearful afternoon explaining why daddy's never coming home.

Wildly Entertaining! 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

As a cat lover and history buff, Sam Stall's book is wildly entertaining. It's amazing to think that a cat can have so much of an impact. Mine mostly just eat, sleep and give me dirty looks! So, you can imagine my surprise to learn of the huge accomplishments the cats described in the book had on history. I was laughing hysterically all night, much to the confoundment of my husband. You will truly enjoy this book and you might even learn something about those frisky felines we call our friends!

Editorial Review:

Every generation brings a few elite cats who rise above their species. Cats who make a difference. Cats who inspire us with their bravery. Cats who broaden the world's understanding of science, history, art, and religion. These are the subjects of 100 Cats Who Changed Civilization, and this book documents the extraordinary true tales of their contributions. Readers will learn of:
Tibbles, the cat who single-handedly wiped out an entire species
Felix, the first cat to explore outer space.
Snowball, the cat who helped to convict dozens of murderers
Ahmedabad, a Siamese kitten who sparked riots through Pakistan

and many more. Packaged in a classy hardcover with black-and-white illustrations, 100 Cats Who Changed Civilization is the biography these fine felines deserve. It's essential reading for pet lovers and history buffs of all ages.

A great series for developing readers 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My ten year old son is a rapidly developing avid reader who has fallen absolutely in love with this excellent series. Erickson creates rapid narratives filled with honest (and yes, corny) humor and pleasently comic action and an occasional moral or two.

This series provides young readers with a simple, yet appropriately challenging vocabulary. It also provides fine entertainment as it can hold a young man, who favors outdoor activities and sports, and his attention span for countless hours. A most highly reccomended series of books designed to encourage and develop young readers.

The Adventures of Hank the Cowdog 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Hank the cowdog is about a dog named Hank and he lives in a farm.Everything is going right fo Hank because he is the leader of the dogs and nobody ever dared to talk back to him until one day another dog named Rufus came to take over. Then Rufus starts making fun of Hank for having crossed eyes (he got crossed eyes because he tried to see the part where his nose had no skin on it).One time Rufus was acting like Hank (imitating Hank)and Hank ran away.Hank confronted (met) snakes and big birds which he had trouble with.Hank had to deal with Rufus.Do you think he (Hank) might get away with still being the leader?,well if you keep on reading the ending you will know.

Editorial Review:

Hank the Cowdog almost loses his job as Head of Ranch Security when he develops a case of Eye-Crosserosis.
