Editorial Review:

Dawn Tarnauer’s life isn’t exactly a success story. Already twice divorced, the young Californian is too busy job-hopping to start a career, her current boyfriend insists on living “off the grid,” her Life Coach sister perpetually interferes with incomprehensible affirmations, her eccentric mother is busy promoting the culmination of her life’s work: The Every Holiday Tree, and her father is ending his brief third marriage while scheduling two dates for the same night.

Dawn’s only source of security and comfort, it seems, is Chuck, a pit-bull mix from the pound. So, when her boyfriend announces that he’s leaving her for another woman, a despairing Dawn turns to Chuck for solace.
“I should have said something sooner,” Chuck confides, as he tries to console her. “Couldn’t you smell her on his pants?” Dawn is stunned. It’s one thing to talk to your pets, but what do you do when they start talking back? It’s not just Chuck, either; she can hear all dogs–and man’s best friend has a lot to say. The ever-enthusiastic Chuck offers his tried-and-true advice on the merits of knocking over garbage and strewing it everywhere, auxiliary competitive peeing etiquette, and the curative powers of tossing a ball. Doubtful of her own sanity, Dawn considers that, in the ways of life and love, it might be better to trust Chuck’s doggie instincts instead of her own.

Filled with sharp wit, biting humor, and canine conversation that would make Doctor Dolittle’s jaw drop, Merrill Markoe’s engaging, cleverly written novel is about the confusing search for love and the divine acts of dog.

It's a good thing! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Take one dog with attitude, add one can of alphabet soup, and you've got Martha, who not only talks, but isn't afraid to speak her mind. In this book, her fourth adventure so far, Martha learns the power that other people's (or animal's) words have on our self-image.

Every day, Martha walks herself around the neighborhood, and every day things are pretty much the same -- until Bad Dog Bob moves in. Bob spends his days lurking under the porch steps, then charging at anything that moves into his line of sight. Only two things keep him from ripping his neighbors to shreds -- his chain, which only reaches so far, and his owner, who always screams, "BAD DOG, BOB! BAD DOG! "

Then someone else moves into the neighborhood. This animal can talk, too, but Martha soon realizes her new neighbor is only parroting her words back to her. She teaches the bird to say "Good dog! What a dog!" and "You must have fleas!"

When Martha decides one day to tell Bad Dog Bob what she really thinks of him, she's not counting on his chain being broken. Just when Martha is sure Bob is going to have her for a doggie treat, a voice from above says, "Good dog!" Suddenly, Bob smiles. Quick-thinking Martha teaches her parrot friend more words of praise, and Bad Dog Bob turns into Tail-wagging Bob.

My kids love the Martha books because they are so funny. I love them because they are great jumping off places for discussions of serious topics. This book led to a discussion of just what it means to call someone "Stupid Head." I can't say we've totally eliminated that insult or others like it from our house, but we're working on it.

A Time to Be Brave 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It's very hard not to adore Owly. The drawings, charmingly rendered in black and white, effectively communicate entire stories with very few to no words. They're great for young kids who still don't know how to read that well, but all ages can appreciate the genuine heart-felt nature of the simple stories and the delicate ways in which they are told.
The remarkable thing here is that Owly, in volume 4, shows no signs of slowing down or losing ideas. Each book teaches a new idea or lesson. A Time to Be Brave is about being brave when it's the, well, right time. It's wonderful, children will love it, and adults will treasure it.

Editorial Review:

In Flying Lessons, Owly figures out why he can't fly, and helps another forest creature with his own flying problems. Relying on a mixture of symbols, icons, and expressions to tell his silent stories, Runton's clean, animated, and heartwarming style makes it a perfect read for anyone who's a fan of Jeff Smith's Bone or Mike Kunkel's Herobear and the Kid. Already winning fans around the world, Owly is not to be missed.

Woo Hoo! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've been sharing my life with house rabbits for over ten years. I've got to say that this book is a barrel of laughs. Having known bunnies with 'tude, I can say that, despite their excellent senses of humor, they are also masters of disapproval. From "Sorry, slave, but that lettuce isn't organic" to "Go ahead, make me get off this couch," their faces are so full of expression! It's amazing to see how so much intelligence and emotion are packed into those little fur bodies.

Editorial Review:

Try as hard as you like, there's just no pleasing a disapproving rabbit

Let them hop around your house, they'll disapprove of your decorating skills. Feed them tasty veggies, they'll disapprove of your culinary skills. Sit together in your yard, and they'll disapprove of your gardening (even as they devour it).

Long thought of as mindless raiders of gardens and happy couriers of colored eggs, it's almost as if rabbits have been getting the best of us for years, secretly disapproving of all our non-rabbit ways.

Fortunately Sharon Stiteler, known as the Bird Chick for her work in the birding community, began to notice something not-quite-right about her pet rabbit Cinnamon. It appeared that Cinnamon didn't approve . . . of anything. After studying a great many photos, Sharon has soundly and without-out-a-doubt proved that rabbits have some major attitude.

very disappointed 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Usually uncle john's books are packed full of goodies. This book was substandard size, hardbound to make up for how thin it truly was with tiny little snippets and tidbits throughout. Most pages are only half full and the book is already only a quarter the thickness and half the width/height of a normal uncle john's book. Extremely disappointed to have spent more than a dollar on this thing. Don't waste your money unless you're looking for a minor (albeit overpriced) stocking stuffer.

Editorial Review:

Warren Eckstein said, "In the beginning, God created man, but seeing him so feeble, He gave him the cat." The Bathroom Readers’ Hysterical Society agrees, and shows it with this endlessly diverting tribute to tabby. From famous cats to the famous with their cats to cats’ famous history, from cats who like to paint to cats who travel the world to find their way home, Uncle John’s Hysterical Society scours the globe to find the winning-est, wackiest, most wondrous cat tales for this collection.

A very naughty but very funny book. 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Although this book is now quite old it has lost none of it's ascerbic wit. And it is wit with a dark, naughty and twisted edge which does not have to work hard to illustrate it's point, it does exactly what you would expect of the title and why would you look if you felt as though you would be offended?
I believe this kind of base, juvenille humour is needed by us all at time's. The hilarity of the forbidden and taboo subject is intensely and achingly funny sometimes. Surely everyone remembers wanting to howl with laughter when being heftily scalded as a child?
To ignore we have such base instincts is to deny being human and assume superiorty over ones peers, quite hilarious in itself really, it is afterall, JUST A BOOK!
This book is wickedly funny and a huge "pick-me-up" with no real malice intended! To the book's detractors and disapprovers I say, Lighten up folks! NO ACTUAL CATS WERE HURT IN THE MAKING OF THE BOOK!!

Editorial Review:

Since time immemorial mankind has been plagued by the question "What do you do with a dead cat?" Here, at last, in 101 hilarious, outrageous, and (sometimes) downright sick cartoons, are some answers. 101 black-and-white illustrations.

So repetetive in print that it will drive your child to boredom 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I wanted to like this one. I really did. My son loves hand clap games and board books so it seemed like a natural fit. He just seemed to hate the repetition in this one. The sounds/words/rhythm are the same page in and page out and by page 5, he was acting like he does when I try to read a book to him a second time to avoid getting up to get another. (He's seen it before and he knows it.)

Bedtime Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter is in love with this hillarous illustrated book. We checked it out from the library and it has become her favorite. We read it two times before nap and again two times before bed. I even catch her reading to herself!I also like it because at the end of the book there are questions and ideas that focus on different areas such as rhyming. I know we will be purchasing this book before we have to take it back to the library.

Editorial Review:

An expanded adaptation of the familiar hand-clapping rhyme about a young girl and an elephant. Includes music and directions for the hand-clapping actions.

Good book especially if you are doing You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Gives some fun insight on the character of Snoopy is his many guises.

Nice, hefty Snoopy sampler 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Nice, thick volume with tons of Snoopy cartoons. Although the book is called the "Many" faces of Snoopy, it's actually divided into just five sections: Joe Cool, the Attorney, the World War I Flying Ace (the biggest section, of course), Beagle Scout and Writing Ace. Still, even only looking at those five facets of Snoopy's multi-layered personality packs this book with over 300 pages of cartoons from throughout the 50-year run of Peanuts. Definitely worth getting for the Snoopy fan.

Snoopy book 5 out of 5 stars.

My sister and I are big Snoopy fans. I ordered this book for her Christmas gift and almost kept it for myself!
It is great and good fun reading.

Superb book for all ages 5 out of 5 stars.

If you like snoopy you NEED this book. It provides some excellent sketches from 5 of snoopys best loved personalities. It dosen't deal with all his alter egos but is still a great read. The book is well presented and superb value at under 12 dollars. This book is not just for kids. I myself am a 32 year year old school teacher and I found this book highly entertaining. If you are a snoopy fan order it today....

My Favorite Wall Calendar 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is the 3rd year in a row that I have ordered one of these calendars and they are the best! I don't own bulldogs but the pictures and humor in this calendar almost make me want one. My 2 year old daughter even laughs at the pictures!

Editorial Review:

Despite her bloodshot eyes, stout frame, and serious overbite, she's still "adora-bull." She's Zelda, the English bulldog known for her outrageous costumes and "biting" wisdom such as, "Don't cry over spilled milk--lap it up." Tough but tender, sweet but strong, Zelda reminds us to laugh at life--and ourselves.

* "This doggy diva is queen of the catwalk." --Oprah Winfrey

Each month of this full-color calendar features a hilarious image of Zelda donning one of her outlandish outfits accompanied by one of her trademark quips.
