Editorial Review:

Finally, there’s a book that’s almost as much fun as having a couple of drinks. Alcoholica Esoterica presents the history and culture of booze as told by a writer with a knack for distilling all the boring bits into the most interesting facts and hilarious tales. It’s almost like pulling up a stool next to the smartest and funniest guy in the bar. Divided into chapters covering the basic booze groups—including beer, wine, Champagne, whiskey, rum, gin, vodka, and tequila—Alcoholica Esoterica charts the origin and rise of each alcohol’s particular charms and influence. Other sections chronicle "Great Moments in Hic-story," "Great Country Drinking Songs," "10 Odd Laws," and "Mt. Lushmore, Parts I–V." Additionally, famous quotes on the joys and sorrows of liquor offer useful shots of advice and intoxicating whimsy.

Did you know...

• that the word bar is short for barrier? Yes, that’s right—to keep the customers from getting at all the booze.
• that Winston Churchill’s mother supposedly invented the Manhattan?
• that the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock because the sailors on the Mayflower were running low on beer and were tired of sharing?
• that you have a higher chance of being killed by a flying Champagne cork than by a poisonous spider?
• that the Code of Hammurabi mandated that brewers of low-quality beer be drowned in it?
• that beer was so popular with medieval priests and monks that in the thirteenth century they stopped baptizing babies with holy water and started using beer?

Sourdough for real people 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is actually Dan Lepard's English book, "The Handmade Loaf" converted to American measures. I own over 20 bread books and Lepard's intermittent minimal kneading method beats all other methods, hands down, for delicious, country style artisanal breads and sourdough starters.

Some work, some don't 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Interesting and unusual recipes. But the prescribed techniques just don't work for me. When I revert to using the formulas with my standard baking methods, I usually get good to outstanding results.

If the methods work for you, hurrah! If not, you still get some unusual recipes to try.

Editorial Review:

Part travelogue, part epicurean manifesto, this lushly photographed collection of 90 recipes inspired by Europe’s home bakers is a treasure. Dan Lepard, a highly regarded baker in Great Britain, traveled from Ireland to the Ukraine in search of the most authentic sources of grains and flavors. His intimate photographs take us on a mouthwatering journey into farmhouse kitchens and small bakeries where bread has been made for centuries. Interspersed with stories and images, the recipes feature helpful instructions and innovations that contemporary bakers will love, along with delectable pictures of the finished loaves.

Hotel Bemelmans, published by Overlook Press is abridged 2 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Potential purchasers of Bemelman's lovely "Hotel Bemelmans" should know that as far as I can tell all the Hotel Bemelmans books advertised on Amazon is a shortened edition of the original Hotel Bemelmans published in 1946 by Viking Press. The books advertised here were published in 2000 by Overlook Press and contain 24 stories. The Viking Press edition has 36 stories. I learned this the hard way having purchased 3 copies of the shortened Overlook Press book. Some wonderful stories have been left out. e.g. Art at the Splendide. I have the original and am looking to buy some more.

Editorial Review:

If there is such a thing as a comfort food book, Bemelmans stories are it. His evocative tales of a grand hotel life have a reporter's eye for sensory detail, yet he always manages to bathe his world and it's lovable characters in the mood for a fairytale. Meet the girl-hungry hotel Magician, Kalakobe the African cook, Mr Sigsag, Monsieur Victor, Mespoulet, and an unforgettable cast of down but not yet out hotel employees. This book offers a feast of food writing. And once you've read one Bemelmans tale, you fall in love and want to read the lot.

Editorial Review:

Playing With Fire: Whining & Dining on the Gold Coast is a voyeur’s peek into the crazy world of the restaurant culture. Filled with vignettes of difficult customers, stressed-out cooks, harried wait staff, and the truly disturbed, this book takes an affectionate romp through Tom Schaudel’s restaurants to introduce you to the most memorable cast of characters he’s experienced in his forty years in the business. You’ll meet a ninety-year old-woman who happens to be a serial “bird-flipper,” a woman trying to drag a twenty-foot Christmas tree out the front door undetected, an elderly gentleman walking out with an 8.5" x 15" metal clipboard menu holder stuffed down his pants, and a woman who got drunk, passed out, got revived, and aced an intervention, all in under twenty minutes. An absolute must read for “foodies,” these stories and the many others will provide pure entertainment and lots of laughs for a long, long time to come.

Editorial Review:

Americans are drinking more alcoholic beverages than ever, and almost 30 percent of tipplers name wine as their drink of choice. Recent studies have touted the health benefits of wine-drinking. So why is wine so intimidating? The sheer numbers and types of wines? The wine snobs with their arcane terminology? The French with their insufferable Frenchiness?

Demystifying oenophilia and offering more than a few laughs along the way, Jennifer Rosen’s THE CORK JESTERÂ’S GUIDE TO WINE is a collection of fast, funny anecdotes and informative lessons sure to entertain both the vintage idiot and the savvy sipper.

In the book’s introduction, Rosen offers a typically frank explanation of her approach: "A wise winemaker told me, ‘Drinking wine with a sommelier is like making love to a gynecologist: it’s better if they donÂ’t tell you everything they know.’ Instead, I offer a series of bite-sized stories; Trojan horses filled with facts programmed to infiltrate and lodge in your brain, with no effort on your part."

What a Hoot!! 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This was one of the most delightful books I have read in ages. Monica Dickens (great-granddaughter of Charles), despite her privileged upbringing, despite being presented at Court as a debutante, is bored and has little desire to do the rounds of social events expected of a young upper class girl in the mid 1930s. And so she decides to try her hand at domestic service. If you have ever enjoyed watching the wonderful "Upstairs Downstairs" series or reading other tales which reflect the upstairs downstairs lives of the British class system, this is for you. It is light, entertaining and the author writes so fluidly, it has inspired me to begin reading more of her works.

Editorial Review:

After being expelled from drama schools and exhausted by the deb party circuit, Monica Dickens takes on the role of cook-general for the English upper classes. While frantically trying to cook and clean for a succession of employers -- the abusive bachelor fashion designer, the spatting newlyweds, the elusive Lady W. and her vast country estate, and the almost too-kind Vaughan family, among others -- she subjects herself to all the degradations and delights of life as a servant in England in the 1930s.
