Great fly fishing read 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Not a tying instruction book, but does provide pattern recipes for the flies he references in his stories. Intermediate or advanced tyers should have no problem constructing the patterns. This guy knows how to write an interesting & entertaining story. If you are a flytyer/flyfisher I believe you will enjoy this book as much as I did. Blue Upright: The Flies of a Lifetime was so good I purchased several of his earlier titles Angler Gift Box: The Year of the Angler and the Year of the Troutbecause I enjoy his writing style. Highly recommended addition to your sporting library.

Editorial Review:

An essential book of flies for people who tie them and fish with them.

Editorial Review:

Jim Dean, longtime editor of Wildlife in North Carolina offers his personal observations on the pleasures and frustrations of hunting, fishing, camping, and other outdoor pursuits. Dogs That Point, Fish That Bite draws together fifty of the best columns that Dean has written for the magazine over the last seventeen years. The witty, sometimes poignant pieces are arranged into a loose chronicle of the sporting year, with a generous allowance for digression: the first is set in April, on the opening day of trout season, and the last tells of a New Year's Day spent alone in a mountain cabin.

At first glance, hunting and fishing are the focus of most of the columns. Often, however, Dean is after bigger game. A crab that escapes the pot leads him to reflect on the capricious nature of life. The restoration of a cabin at the old family farm evokes memories of family and simpler times. And a May panfishing trip takes on the quality of ritual, performed by two old friends. The consistent theme uniting all the essays is the celebration of wild places and rural traditions that have become endangered in our modern world.

Not Just Another Fish Story 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

At times poetic, at times informative, and at times just entertaining, this book is a must for anyone who likes fish, fishing or just great art. The two guys who collaborated on this book found a fun way of sharing their fish passion with the reader. Ray Troll's artwork has a charming folk quality with a bit of twisted humor reminiscent of Gary Larsen. This book is a quick read and something you can pick up and enjoy again and again. Loved it!

Shockingly good 5 out of 5 stars.

I've been a Ray Troll fan for a long time. I've owned t-shirts, coffee mugs and this book. Also saw his 'show' on evolution at the San Francisco Aquarium sometime back. His art is funny, surreal, beautiful and, sometimes, pointedly instructional (how to treat the planet). I recommend this book and go to his site and buy a t-shirt.

Observations from one of the Orginial fly fishing greats! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Funny, thoughtful, honest......a great compilation of short stories from one of the orginial sport/fly fishermen (and a superb writer) of the rivers!! Do not miss it!!

Editorial Review:

Sparse Grey Hackle is the icon of the golden age of fly fishing, the confidant and recorder of the first generation of fly fishers - George LaBranche, Edward Hewitt, Harry and Elsie Darbee, and Vincent Marinaro, to name a few. An Honest Angler is a full and satisfying collection of Sparse's famous and unforgettable essays and the best of his lesser-known newspaper articles, columns, and letters - selected and edited by his daughter. Sparse writes about a wide spectrum of subjects: fly fishing, writing, wild life, track, boating, his military days, and, of course, friends and family.

With a moving and humorous biographical foreword by Pat Sherwood, this book is a must for every Sparse Grey Hackle fan, and for anyone interested in angling, sports, and great writing.

Editorial Review:

He was born in the year Dr Johnson died, and died in the year A.E. Houseman and Conan Doyle were born. The 75 years of Leigh Hunt's life uniquely span two distinct eras of English life and literature. A major player in the Romantic movement, the intimate and first publisher of Keats and Shelley, friend of Byron, Hazlitt and Lamb, Hunt lived on to become an elder statesman of Victorianism, the friend and chamption of Tennyson and Dickens, awarded a state pension by Queen Victoria. Jailed in his twenties for insulting the Prince of Wales, Hunt ended his long, productive life vainly seeking the Poet Laureatship with fawning poems to Victoria. A tirelessly prolific poet, essayist, editor and critic, he has been described as having no rival in the history of English criticism. Yet Hunt's remarkable life story has never been fully told. Anthony Holden's deeply researched and vibrantly written biography gives full due to this minor poet - but major influence on his great Romantic contemporaries.
