Not for boys 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

For starters, this isn't for boys. Any parent or friend looking for a book for a kid, along the lines of the vastly superior Dangerous Book for Boys, will pass along a nasty substitute if they give this book.

Its really more for college age adults. Any older than that finding it amusing, and they probably had a lobotomy. Any younger, and they'll need one when they're done.

Hide it in the trash. Its an insult to trash, but that's what trash is for.

Editorial Review:

For everyone who loved The Dangerous Book for Boys-an oddly useful and hilarious handbook for the mischievous child in all of us.

If you've reached adulthood without knowing how to spin a rope like a cowboy, cure a hangover, or make a citizen's arrest, this is the book you've been waiting for. Funny, far-ranging, and surprisingly handy, the book presents tutorials, including:

- How to Be a Real Man: mow the perfect lawn; defend yourself with nothing but an umbrella
- Bracing Outdoor Activities: skate backwards; make a boomerang come back; snare wild game
- Amusing Diversions: float an egg; eat a goldfish; master fiendish tongue- twisters; judge a woman's bra size at a glance

Also includes:
- Sumo wrestling for beginners
- Four diversions with a banana
- And much more

Editorial Review:

Ellen DeGeneres published her first book of comic essays, the #1 bestselling My Point...and I Do Have One, way back in 1996. Not one to rest on her laurels, the witty star of stage and screen has since dedicated her life to writing a hilarious new book. That book is this book.

After years of painstaking, round-the-clock research, surviving on a mere twenty minutes of sleep a night, and collaborating with lexicographers, plumbers, and mathematicians, DeGeneres has crafted a book that is both easy to use and very funny. Along with her trademark ramblings, The Funny Thing Is...contains hundreds of succinct insights into her psyche, supplemented by easy-to-understand charts, graphs, and diagrams so that you'll never miss a joke.

Overseeing all aspects of production, DeGeneres labored over details both significant and insignificant, including typefaces, page number placement, and which of the thousands of world languages to use. Ultimately she selected English, as it's her mother tongue, but translations into Hindi and Pig Latin are already in the works.

DeGeneres takes an innovative approach to the organization of her book by utilizing a section in the beginning that includes the name of each chapter, along with a corresponding page number. She calls it the "Table of Contents," and she is confident that it will become the standard to which all books in the future will aspire.

Some of the other innovative features you'll find in this edition:

• More than 50,000 simple, short words arranged in sentences that form paragraphs.

• Thousands of observations on everyday life -- from terrible fashion trends to how to handle seating arrangements for a Sunday brunch with Paula Abdul, Diane Sawyer, and Eminem.

• All twenty-six letters of the alphabet.

Sure to make you laugh, The Funny Thing Is...is an indispensable reference for anyone who knows how to read or wants to fool people into thinking they do.

A very naughty but very funny book. 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Although this book is now quite old it has lost none of it's ascerbic wit. And it is wit with a dark, naughty and twisted edge which does not have to work hard to illustrate it's point, it does exactly what you would expect of the title and why would you look if you felt as though you would be offended?
I believe this kind of base, juvenille humour is needed by us all at time's. The hilarity of the forbidden and taboo subject is intensely and achingly funny sometimes. Surely everyone remembers wanting to howl with laughter when being heftily scalded as a child?
To ignore we have such base instincts is to deny being human and assume superiorty over ones peers, quite hilarious in itself really, it is afterall, JUST A BOOK!
This book is wickedly funny and a huge "pick-me-up" with no real malice intended! To the book's detractors and disapprovers I say, Lighten up folks! NO ACTUAL CATS WERE HURT IN THE MAKING OF THE BOOK!!

Editorial Review:

When One Garfield Isn't Enough! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book. Being one of the earlier books in the Garfield collection Jim Davis had many fresh ideas to work with. You may be surprized that Garfield looks slightly different , but the attitude stays the same. If you want to see Garfield very different, see fat cat 3-pack number one. If you love Garfield, This is a must have.

This book features: Mondays, The caped Avenger, The fence, Nermal, Odie, and of course Garfields sick addiction to food .

Enjoy!

If you liked this one I reccomend Fat Cat 3 pack: 4, 5, and 7.

Very Good 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

When one Garfield isn't enough!
That four-legged fur balloon we affectionately refer to as Garfield always wants more -- and he gives as good as he gets in this hilarious volume of belly-busting laughs. So whether he's chaining himself to the refrigerator, biting Odie's fingernails, or borrowing Jon's deodorant, there's only one thing better than a Garfield collection: three Garfield collections!

A different view of the good doctor 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Long before he started writing children's books, Theodor Geisel did advertising ("Quick Henry, the Flit!"), and even editorial cartooning. This book collects a large number of his WWII cartoon, and offers a fascinating commentary on those cartoons and on the man who drew them.

The militancy of these cartoons stands in stark contrast to the gentle goofiness of, for example, "One Fish, Two Fish." Of course, he took on Hitler, Mussolini, and other Axis leaders, using ridicule as his weapon against them. Other cartoons blast the appeasers and not-our-problem isolationists of the time. Interestingly, other cartoons came out with strongly anti-racist themes - a bit radical for the time, but he treated exclusion of blacks from wartime industry as a form of sabotage or treason. Minear's commentary offers helpful insight into the times in which the cartoons arose, and into some of the controversy they engendred, making its points with clear cross-references to specific cartoons.

It's hard to see these today as serious political statements. Too many of us grew up on The Cat in the Hat and other of Geisel's later work. When we see his distinctive lines and style, they can no longer carry the adult clout that they did in the 1940s. It's hard to see his artwork through the eyes of these cartoons' original readers, and to see the outrage that Seuss both satirized and ignited. It's worth the effort, though. WWII was a very different time than today, and did a lot to shape what today has become. Minear's book examines a unique facet of that time.

Editorial Review:

The bestselling treasure trove of World War II political cartoons by Dr. Seuss. For decades, readers throughout the world have enjoyed the marvelous stories and illustrations of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. But few know the work Geisel did as a political cartoonist during World War II, for the New York daily newspaper PM. In these extraordinarily trenchant cartoons, Geisel presents "a provocative history of wartime politics" (Entertainment Weekly). Dr. Seuss Goes to War features handsome, large-format reproductions of more than two hundred of Geisel's cartoons, alongside "insightful" (Booklist) commentary by the historian Richard H. Minear that places them in the context of the national climate they reflect. Pulitzer Prize-winner Art Spiegelman's introduction places Seuss firmly in the pantheon of the leading political cartoonists of our time. 200 black-and-white illustrations.

I'm now on page 24 and can say for sure that this book is a masterpiece and Jim Davis is a genius! There is not a big number of good comics in the world and Garfield is one of them. The book is large and sure is worth your money. But if you don't like reading books that make you feel happy, this one is not for you.

Editorial Review:

Witty, urbane, sassy, and downright delightful, here are the first three original books of pure Garfield collected in one packed volume. They tell the story of the feisty feline's birth, adoption, and growth into general wonderfulness---just in case you've forgotten --and remind us why we loved him like we do.

Great Fun if You're a Golfer or Not 5 out of 5 stars.

I laughed my head off when I read this little book. I just couldn't put it down even though I had other things to do that "seemed" more important. Think of the possibilities: birthdays, Boss' Day, Father's Day. Makes a great gift for any golfer on your list, male or female.

Shaved strokes off my game 5 out of 5 stars.

This book mentions every single thing that you really shouldn't do with your golf game. Not just jokes in here, but real tips that you've heard from players and pros alike.

Editorial Review:

1. A drop of sweat fell in my eye, and I missed the ball. 2. I stubbed my toe on the base of my bed, now I can't wear my golf shoes. 3. I've only played with these clubs twice. 4. My rain suit is too tight and I can't swing my club smoothly. 5. My ball is all scuffed up. 6. I keep picking up my head. I'm afraid the geese are going to do their business on me. 7. The tee was leaning too far forward. 8. I get nervous shooting last all the time. 9. The sun was in my eyes. 10. I thought we were using the green over there.

All the Rage is a resounding success. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

All the Rage: The Boondocks Past and Present is more than just the latest collection of the politically charged, African-American culture-centric newspaper comic strip - it also gathers a massive assortment of interviews with comic creator, writer and cartoonist Aaron McGruder, and even prints some of the most controversial strips for the first time. Young, unsmiling radical leftist Huey gives his cynical take on everything from McDonald's ridiculous attempts to emulate hiphop culture to high-level political hypocrisy, while his gangsta-wannabe little brother Riley represents the aspect of modern rap culture that is blindly obsessed criminality: "Man, I'd never steal music off the internet... it's easier to just steal it from the store." No cow is too sacred in All the Rage; there are jabs galore for the more questionable aspects of black and white culture alike. The interviews reveal a passionate side to McGruder, embedded in his desire to do more than make his readers laugh; he also wants to make them think, and in that All the Rage is a resounding success. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Here are the latest, greatest, and last of the daily and Sunday strips; banned comics that have never been seen before, with Aaron McGruder’s commentary on them; and interviews and profiles of the man behind the rage. All the Rage is a must for any true Boondocks fan.
