As John Hodgman says in this book's introduction, “We all know that books are funny. First, they are made of paste and cloth, which is funny, as is the fact that people still buy and read them.” With that in mind, the McSweeney's Joke Book of Book Jokes collects the best book-related humor from the humor-laden archives of McSweeney's Internet Tendency. Open it and be regaled by such sketches, lists, letters, and spoofs as:

The best Prairie Home shows of every year - you just have to laugh 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I got a cassette tape of the first PHC joke show years ago and just about wore it out from playing it to keep me alert and upbeat on road trips. Now I found this compilation on 4 CDs and I'm laughing more than ever. Sure, there are sophomoric jokes, 3rd grade jokes, puns, groaners and old chestnuts you've heard before, but somehow they all work when presented by Garrison, Roy Blount, Paula Poundstone and the rest. I love it!

Have the best road trips ever! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the best way I know to get through a long road trip laughing. It will also take your mind off your worries, because you have to really pay attention to keep up with the rapid fire delivery style and you can't think about much else at the same time. This has become a classic in our home, and a great gift for everyone who says, "I have to have that for myself!"

This is great stuff 5 out of 5 stars.

The four CDs in this collection are great entertainment, albeit a bit ribald, from Garrison Keilor's NPR radio shows. I've bought several copies for friends and even sent a couple of copies to our troops in the mid-east. My son says it helped boost morale when he was there. Avoid it if you're easily offended, but great fun for the rest of us.

Jokes with a purpose and a lack of meanness 4 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

In an age where humor is often laced with profanity or based on the ridicule of others, it is very pleasant to find a collection that is largely clean and often cerebral. This book contains a recollection of Isaac Asimov's favorite jokes along with instructions on how to deliver them. While Asimov is well-known as a prolific author, he was also a very funny man, possessing a sense of comedic timing that helped him earn hefty fees as a speaker.
While the jokes are good, it is clear that many of them would have to be delivered in the right manner to be funny. As you read Asimov's commentary, it is not difficult to imagine someone telling the story to maximum effect. Therefore, the book could also be used as a source for material as well as a primer on how to deliver an ice-breaking joke at the start of a public speech.
Isaac Asimov was a very talented man, capable of writing well about anything. His sense of humor was highly developed, something that is obvious from this book. I enjoyed it immensely and have occasionally used some of the jokes in my classes

Witty, Entertaining and Oddly Useful 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I picked this up on impulse for poolside reading. Very, very witty. Laugh-out-loud funny at times and remarkably useful, albeit odd, advice. The author opens each discussion topic with a humourous, slightly sarcastic and very cheeky personal story or comment about how she came to know how to do that specific task.

The surprising fact is that despite the whimsical and random nature of the advice, it is really a good book to have on hand. A modern, comic version of "Ask Heloise".

There is a chapter on saving/fixing meals gone bad, changing a tire in clothes you can't get dirty, bluffing your way through musical history, digging a latrine in the wilderness, surviving a plane crash, and a fatally funny approach to handling telemarketers.

Other gems include: how meet your ex's new girlfriend, informing colleagues they smell bad, walking on stilts, undressing a man, catch a cheater, bellydancing for beginners, climbing stairs in very high heels, mixing cocktails, riding an ostrich, cut ahead of a line to the bathroom and my favorite: how to pretend you are still at work while you are at a bar.

I enjoyed this so much I bought copies and sent them as gifts to my best friends.

Editorial Review:

Anything boys can do, girls can do better.

HANDY HOUSEHOLD ADVICE:

I like Garfield because he is funny!
Garfield is the only comic strip I read.
I especially like the " Fat Cat 3 Pack"s 'cause there are these little
"Funnies" between the chapters. Reading Garfield comics also exercises
your vocabulary skills. My favorite part of each pack is when Garfield celebrates Christmas.

Editorial Review:

In this collection we meet Garfield, the cat who's elevated eating and sleeping to an art. So whether he's squashing spiders, stalking a herd of wild doughnuts, or snoozing through a Monday, Garfield always brings a sense of fun to the proceedings.

Laughing all the way 5 out of 5 stars.

I have always been a fan of the Reader's Digest, particularly their humor sections. This pulls together the best of their offerings over the years, and it's a great read for anyone who likes to laugh.

Cheerful 5 out of 5 stars.

This was a gift for a person in the hospital and preparing for a long haul to get better. It was the best gift you can give as, no matter how much you do not want to laugh, you laugh just reading it. Remember, Laughter really is the Best Medicine.

Laughter IS the Best Medicine ! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a large collection of excellent humor.
Need a laugh? ...
Get this book ... you won't be sorry.
This is just one more winner for Reader's Digest!

Giggles.... 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The book is pretty cute. Its filled with three sentence stories from people who have experienced funny things in life.

It does have a couple of pages with full page funny stories. It's great to read on the subway or in a waiting room.

I was expecting to be rolling on the floor laughing my butt off, but this wasn't the case. Only giggles. Stories I could probably share with a friend, co-worker, even a boss to get a "ha" or a "Smile"

Basically, it's just a book to kill some time, no matter where you left off.

Enjoyable conversation piece type book 4 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Maybe 2,548 quotes but not that many different quotes. The book is a combination of his previous four books. They are placed one after the other and bound together as one book. The problem is that the books have not been culled of repeats. So, many quotes show up in all four books and therefore show up four times in this book.
I will have to say that it contains lots of quotes that I have not seen anywhere else and it is an enjoyable read. Each of the four books is organized into logical sections and related quotes in each section.
When you have ten minutes of time to kill it is easy to pick up and read a few passages and then put it down. It is an interesting read and is well worth the price even with the repeats.

Editorial Review:

Drawing from diverse personages -- Goethe to Churchill to Woody Allen -- Robert Byrne has mined a collection of wit and wisdom that deserves a special place on every humor lover's bookshelf. These unique, witty, and outrageous quotations, previously published in four separate volumes, are now gathered together in a seemingly limitless trove of pithy and often irreverent one-liners, retorts, put-downs, jokes, and last words that cover every conceivable subject and will appeal to every taste. Highlights include:

"Start every day with a smile and get it over with." -- W. C. Fields

"Men read maps better than women because only men understand that an inch canequal a hundred miles." -- Roseanne Barr

"Happiness is having a large loving family in another city." -- George Burns

You don't have to be Jewish! 5 out of 5 stars.

For anyone exposed to American TV and movies (which I have been since the 50's) this is entertainment mother's milk. We've all become a little Jewish (comedically speaking) and I, at least, am decidedly better for it.

Editorial Review:

Two rival businessmen meet in the Warsaw train station. "Where are you going?" says the first man.

"To Minsk," says the second.

"To Minsk, eh? What a nerve you have! I know you're telling me you're going to Minsk because you want me to think that you're really going to Pinsk. But it so happens that I know you really are going to Minsk. So why are you lying to me?"

Four men are walking in the desert.

The German says, "I'm tired and thirsty. I must have a beer."

The Italian says, "I'm tired and thirsty. I must have wine."

The Mexican says, "I'm tired and thirsty.

I must have tequila."

The Jew says, "I'm tired and thirsty. I must have diabetes."
