Beau's book: parody or experiment? 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I don't really believe that "a night without armor II: the revenge" is a parody of Jewel's book. Yes, the cover was parodied, and Beau used all of Jewel's titles as titles for his own poems. But from there, any similarity between what Beau writes and what Jewel wrote ends. He claims to have written this book in four hours, and having known Beau in high school and knowing the way he does things, it's probably true. But the quickness in the writing and the total opposite-of-Jewel's-writing approach he takes should not be taken for a straight parody, as, say, "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Eat It" would be. Beau is original and fresh, and in a world of driveling, whining poets (I did not mention Jewel here out of respect for her fans), I think maybe we need a breath of fresh Oklahoma air.

Editorial Review:

This book is a lighthearted takeoff on "A Night Without Armor," the bestselling book of poetry by the popstar called Jewel. The 22-year-old Mr. Sia has dispensed with the poems written by Jewel but retained Jewel's titles and written 109 new poems using those titles. The poems are mostly very funny, occasionally very serious, often very sexy. The book is not an attack on Jewel. It is a showcase for the writing of a very talented and amusing young poet. It was released on the same day as his first CD, "Attack! Attack! Go!"

For Laughing Out Louder: More Poems to Tickle Your Funnybone 5 out of 5 stars.

Everyone should read this book. While intended for a younger audience, people of all ages would find the humor of each poem and pun within the pages of this short but hilarious book. Cute illustrations can even be found illustrating each poem with a simple yet well done picture. I simply can't recommend this book enough!

Editorial Review:

In a splendidly silly sequel to their 1991 collaboration, For Laughing Out Loud, Jack Prelutsky and Marjorie Priceman return with 72 hilarious short verses guaranteed to leave kids weak with laughter.  There are poems about food, school, sibling rivalry, and hungry beasts, plus a wonderful potpourri of nonsense verse, tongue twisters, and limericks by nearly 40 of the best contemporary poets for children, including Shel Silverstein, John Ciardi, Mary Ann Hoberman, and of course, Prelutsky himself.  Marjorie Priceman's ebullient illustrations perfectly capture the sidesplitting humor of these rollicking read-aloud--or read-alone--gems.

Editorial Review:

Inside these covers you will find a collection of licentious limericks which have been handed down from generation to generation by word of mouth—some of them for more than 100 years. Until quite recently, few of these verses had ever appeared in public print, although many had been privately printed and circulated from time to time. Many are written by well-known authors although, due to the nature of the content, they are often presented anonymously. This uproarious collection will perhaps finally bestow respectability upon stanzas long venerated in oral tradition. Most of them are bawdy, some are wickedly clever—all are guaranteed to raise a laugh.

"No wedding complete/without cold beer & Elvis/impersonator" 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Follow the condensed adventures of Bubba, Flo, Wanda, Jake, and the feisty Grandma ("Last Las Vegas trip / spoiled by Granny's indecent / exposure arrest") in this amusing little book. NASCAR, guns, gumbo, and award-winning BBQ sauce, dogs under the porch, marriages and divorces -- the life of an extended redneck family chronicled in 17-syllable chapters. One haiku per page, just over 100 haiku; sit out under the awning of your trailer and read it straight through for the most laughs.

WWJGD? 3 out of 5 stars.

Mary K. Witte, Redneck Haiku (Santa Monica Press, 2003)

What would Jim Goad do?

That was what I kept thinking as I turned the pages in this small tome. Would the author of the celebrated, reviled Redneck Manifesto be deeply offended, or would he be laughing his ass off?

Probably both.

The worst factor in the writing of American haiku these days, and it affects almost every otherwise-non-poet (and far too many actual poets) who attempts to write haiku, is the slavish devotion to 5-7-5. Pick up a few books on how to write haiku, people. Or a few books of haiku by recognized American masters, or recognized Japanese masters translated by someone worth their skin. 5-7-5 is an upper limit, not an upper AND lower limit. The shorter your haiku, the better. Slavish devotion to 5-7-5 leads to filler. Yes, even in haiku. There's more than one piece here that could have used a few words carved off here and there. (That said, there are some surprisingly excellent pieces as well.)

Now, ask yourself the question: will you feel guilty laughing at stereotypes? Sure, it's a redneck writing about rednecks (Witte, according to a recent interview, grew up on a farm outside Tulsa, and swears that some of the events she depicts in this book really happened to family members of hers), but do you feel guilty for laughing about it? Maybe you should. That said, this stuff ranges from the grimly amusing to the down-and-out hysterical. If Jim Goad wants to kick my ass for thinking so, that's his right, and I'd probably let him do it, too. ***

Editorial Review:

The redneck lifestyle is exposed through the hilariously antithetical filter of formal Japanese haiku in this collection of original verses. Each of the over 100 wickedly funny poems contains just three lines and 17 syllables, yet together they address the whole spectrum of redneck culture, including RVs, Wal-Mart, beer, Pop-Tarts, pickups, monster trucks, NASCAR, boats, trailers, trailer parks, barns, hunting, shotguns, dogs, Las Vegas, and the lottery.

A must for R. Crumb aficionados, this beautifully designed hardcover collects many of the illustrations done for projects as varied as novels, greeting cards, scripts, and birth announcements, as well as unpublished work. Great stuff! R. Crumb is the master of pen and ink.

Editorial Review:

A never-before-compiled collection from the most influential underground artist of our time.
Robert Crumb is a cartoonist with an instantly recognizable style who emerged in the 1960s with strips in the underground press. He founded Zap Comix in 1968 and created Fritz the Cat, Devil Girl, Mr. Natural, Keep on Truckin' and hundreds of other characters that instantly struck a nerve with people everywhere.

Odds & Ends is a unique book of Robert Crumb's previously unpublished, autobiographical, favorite, and most successful strips. It also contains photographs, portraits, and text by the man himself.

With a jacket designed by the artist, Odds & Ends is beautifully produced and filled with color artwork-a great introduction to one of our most important cartoonists, as well as an invaluable addition to any fan's library.

"The trouble with my car is that it won't start and the payments won't stop"

"I care a lot about my wife's happiness. So much so that's I've hired a private detective to find out who's responsible for it."

This book is an excellent collection of one-liners. Unlike many joke books, over 90% of its jokes are actually funny! There's a good indexing system as well. Though admittedly there's no entry for jokes on bicycles.

A CONVERSATION PIECE........ 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Alas! A good reason for you not to buy any of those joke books. Instead, acquire this wonderful recollection of funny phrases actually said or written........ Suggested to witty quotation fans, of course, but a must for those that don't possess humor but do have a good memory !!!!! A compilation of hilarious phrases, edited by Fred Metcalf that will not let you down, in any argument or discussion. Good to break the ice, superb to outwit your opponent, it is the perfect tool to keep at bay the drama, in heavier conversations. Talking to the pretentious literati or author, you get to say: "A good writer is not, per se, a good critic. No more than a good drunk is automatically a good bartender..." If he replies: "Critics are like eunuchs in a harem: they know how it's done, they've seen it done every day, but they're unable to do it themselves" then you can say: "I never read a book before reviewing it- it prejudices a man so...." and then add: "Thank you for sending me a copy of your book. I'll waste no time in reading it..."

Editorial Review:

From Woody Allen to P.G. Wodehouse, the last hundred years offer a rich banquet of humor. Just about any topic under the sun can inspire witty remarks. Fred Metcalf's clearly cross-referenced anthology provides countless gems--ideal for after-dinner speakers, would-be wags, and anyone in search of hours of amusement.
