Editorial Review:

From the bestselling author of Forever Fifty comes a new collection of poems that tickle, console, and offer the pleasure of instant recognition -- the perfect book for any woman anywhere in the vicinity of sixty.

Judith Viorst's "decade" books of verse -- including It's Hard to Be Hip Over Thirty, How Did I Get to Be Forty, and Forever Fifty -- have delighted millions of readers worldwide who relish her wit, warmth, and wisdom. Now here she is with Suddenly Sixty, a funny and touching book that speaks directly to the sixty-ish woman, inviting her to laugh about, sigh over, and come to hopeful terms with the complex issues of this decade of life.

Among the poems in this charmingly illustrated collection are those exploring the joys -- and strains -- of children and grandchildren, and the intimacy of old friends who've "known each other so long/We knew each other back when we were virgins." There are poems that tip their hat to mortality, wrestle with a husband's retirement -- "He's coming with me when I shop at the supermarket/So I won't have to shop alone. I like alone." -- and acknowledge the fact that at this stage of life we'd "give up a night of wild rapture with Denzel Washington for a nice report on my next bone density test." Offering plenty of laughs, a few tears, and cover-to-cover truths, these are poems for everyone who would "rather say never say die than enough is enough." Every woman who has reached this decade will -- rueful and smiling -- find herself in the pages of this book.

This is such a cute book. Bright and colorful pictures to look at, with a story that isn't too repetitive. Readers will not mind reading time and again to children

Rumble in the Jungle! Rocks!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is beautifully illustrated. The vibrant colors invited my students to be actively engaged while we were reading it together. The rhyme scheme of the book made my students laugh and learn at the same time. Humor is always a good way to learn. I would reccomend this book to anyone.

Love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My son loves this book so much that when it started falling apart, I bought another one! He asks for this book every night. Highly recommend!!

Grandpa Rumbles with the Jungle Animals 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Grandpa bought this book to read to his 21 month old granddaughter. She loves books. We have a good time reading this story. Not too short, not too long. We enjoy looking for the animals hidden in the jungle flora on the opening pages of the book. The rhyming verse story is well done. The pictures are big and colorful. Grandpa has to make the sounds that each animal makes, especially the sound of the big, hairy gorilla thumping his chest. We have a fun time looking for the small ants that are found on each of the story pages (added bonus). There are other similar books written by this author that I would consider purchasing.

Editorial Review:

"There's a rumble in the jungle, there's a whisper in the trees; the animals are waking up and rustling the leaves!" Join this rhyming safari and meet everyone from the elphing elephant to the gangly giraffe, and maybe even the terrible tiger!

The Best, Bear! 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm so lucky that my high school Latin teacher, in the early 80s, had us read this alongside Virgil, Horace, Ovid, etc. I had never read "Winnie The Pooh" before! -- and read it only after reading both "Winnie Ille Pu" then, much later, "The Tao of Pooh." You don't need to be as weird or backward as I am, though, to love this. The book is terrific. To all Latin teachers: bring this to class, please. It's wonderful. The students in my class loved it, finding it all very familiar to them as we reached each part. It wasn't easy to translate--I don't know how the newer ones compare ("Harry Potter" in Latin, etc.)--but in 3rd or 4th year high school Latin, it was at our level and a lot of fun. The students who knew Winnie the Pooh found translating it easier than I did, as in: "Oh, this is the part when...", thus were able to extrapolate through its accessibility. For them it was a break from difficult or unfamilar Latin writing, rendering it Useful through familiarity with its English version. For me, I got to know Pooh through Latin, and I've loved Pooh and the gang ever since.

Editorial Review:

From the inner workings of Grandpa's nose hair to noodles in a haystack, Calef Brown once again proves he is a master of hilarious poetic imponderables such as . . . donuts:

Why do all grownups like donuts so much?
They rave about flavors and fillings and such.
They praise all the glazes. They savor the dough.
Donuts are tasty. We get it! We know!!

Dive Right In (but watch out for sharks!) 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm not sure what the commotion is, but these short poems are the perfect length for preschoolers who love word play, are expanding their vocabulary, are fascinated with various animals, but lack the attention span for "more sophisticated" poetry. The poems feature different meters so it does mix things up a bit more than, say, "Green Eggs and Ham", and the illustrations are colorful and fun and only add to the enjoyment.

This is a fun, fun book. As a twist, the first time you read it, read the poem and have your child guess the animal (you'll have to replace the name of the animal in some of the poems with "I" or "we" to do this.)

Editorial Review:

"There's a curious commotion, at the bottom of the ocean; I think we ought to go and take a look. You'll find every sort of creature, that lives beneath the sea; swimming through the pages of this book." The sequel to the best-selling "Rumble in the Jungle", this delightful new collection of poems includes fun rhymes about the creatures who live in and around the ocean. Children will delight in the snappy poems and colorful illustrations about whales, walruses, penguins, polar bears, stingrays and sharks.

The FUNNIEST Poems! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

One of the funniest poems we read was "I'm Stuck Inside a Seashell"! ...And one of the poems is "It's Raining Pigs and Noodles", just like the title (and they don't even just talk about pigs and noodles - they talk about all sorts of other things!)

All the poems are so funny and I was able to read some of them myself! ...And I learned never to take a bath all day and all night (Ha! Ha!)! I can't wait to read his other books!

Mom's note: "This collection of poems was simply adorable. I enjoyed reading them with my child as much as she enjoyed hearing them. ...And the simplicity of the poems allowed her to read some of them to me as well. A highly recommended bit of silliness!"

Editorial Review:

The poet laureate of the young set is back, with his artist laureate collaborator, to "take another swipe at stuffiness."- Here are more than one hundred poems bursting to be read, chanted, laughed over, and remembered.

It would be hard to find a schoolage kid who has not read or heard a Prelutsky poem and who does not want to hear another. He plays with the language and encourages readers to revel in the game. Puns, jokes, wordplay and shape play, wit, silliness, slapstick, and joy abound. Some of the poems are about people, some are about animals. And some are about things that never were (and that one hopes never will be). Be warned: Read a poem once and you will love it. Read it several times and it will be part of you forever.

good, but not written by JP 4 out of 5 stars.
30 of 31 people found this review helpful.

This is a very cute book with lively illustrations, but I was surprised when I received it that it was not written by Jack Prelutsky. The poems were selected by him, and they are enjoyable, but to me don't compare with his wonderful, zany poems that my children always want to hear. So, buyer beware- make sure these books are not "selected" by him or edited by Mr. Prelutsky if you want the real thing.

Completely inappropriate for children 1 out of 5 stars.
22 of 38 people found this review helpful.

While many of the poems are fine, some are morbid. For example, one talks about a boy swimming through the great lakes and drowning, and another talks about grandpa going down the drain and there now being one grandpa fewer. One talks about a dead father who has been haunting his son for 17 years. This book is completely inappropriate for cihldren.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. "These nonsense verses combine the domestic and the gross, deadpan and slapstick, with a lilting rhythm and satisfying rhyme. The poets are well-known contemporaries including Prelutsky, Silverstein, Kuskin, Lobel, Viorst, and many more. The design is ebullient. Start or end story hour with these verses, and kids will know reading's a pleasure."--(starred) Booklist.

A Good Choice 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

MadLibs have always been a favorite of mine, from roadtrips to random entertainment, and "ready for landing" checks. I bought a bunch of these for a recent roadtrip and we laughed a lot at the different things we came up with. My suggestions i always to ahve one person come up with the random words, or just trading off throughout a carload or ...friendload... of people. Everyone with their own intentions tend to wildly adjust how the story plays out!

A classic, for ages to come, enjoy!

Funny 5 out of 5 stars.

Great for a game night! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this for a game night I was having for a bunch of single friends. It was a great way to keep people entertained and have fun in the process. It was tons of fun reading what was written the next day. They sound even more ridiculous and funnier than they did the night before.

Just as fun as when I was a kid 5 out of 5 stars.

I do believe that Bust magazine suggested this, and I am really glad that they did. Mad Libs is still a lot of fun, and this particular edition is especially hilarious. This is definitely only for sassy girls and loose-wristed boys who aren't ashamed of being queens.

Editorial Review:

DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR?

Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy is a hilarious collection of over 275 lines people think they've

heard in pop songs from the 1960s to the 1990s. Now you can come out of that closet and proudly sing

whatever you think you hear. Don't deny it! You know you've sung totally absurd lyrics in

place of the real-and usually less interesting-ones. (It's nothing to ashamed of-most rock stars

never took elocution classes.) Breeze through some of the world's most widely misinterpreted lyrics,

including:

"The ants are my friends/They're blowin' in the wind" ("The answer my friend/Is blowing' in the

wind"-Bob Dylan)

"Sweet dreams are made of cheese" ("Sweet dreams are made of this"-Eurythmics)

"The girl with colitis goes by" ("The girl with kaleidoscope eyes"-The Beatles)

Whether it's Eddie Vedder singing about "forty-five versions of a pelican" or Bruce Springsteen

proclaiming "everybody's got a hungry horse," 'Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy is sure to make

you want to get your hearing checked.
