A Big Hit with My 6 Year Old! 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Amazon.com delivered this book to my son as a gift from a very wise and whimsical friend. He loved it instantly and it became THE requested bedtime book night after night after night. And, that was OK, because we (the grown-ups) love it too! The poems are wacky and sometimes demented and make sense in that dream-sense or nonsense way. You'll laugh and laugh as our family does -- and you'll each have a favorite (mine is "Mysterious Fish"). Promote a love of language and of silliness -- buy this book for a child you love.

Artsy Amusement 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Calef Brown uses funky-folksy illustrations and cheeky verse to describe fourteen imaginative vignettes. The younger set will enjoy spreads featuring topical buzzwords and images near and dear to them in Seven Bad Teeth, Runaway Waffle, Mysterious Fish and Olf (the impoverished pirate). Older children appreciate the unexpected scenarios of grandma jamming for adoring fans, beetles powdering donuts on a sugar beach or commuters floating away with bubble gum balloons. Kids pick up on your own amusement in reading the clever tale of a Moon Reunion and the limerick spoof Jack in the Bucket. Children ages two to seven will smile and puzzle over this wonderfully odd book.

Editorial Review:

In the tradition of Edward Lear, Calef Brown has fashioned fourteen nonsense poems so wacky that both young and old will be unable to suppress their laughter. Invented words and sounds and their visual counterparts create both an audible and a visual feast. This is the kind of silliness children (and many adults) relish.

You Think For No Reason I Read These? No! I Read These To Grow Wiser, Seventeen-Syllables-At-A-Time. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

In some ways even funnier than Bader's other mixture of Judaism and (flimsy) Zen wisdom. These haiku do often offer nuggets of wisdom and nearly always they do it with a little joke wrapped up inside. You can read this book in about thirty minutes, contemplation time included, so why you still sitting there?

Editorial Review:

Why is this haiku book different from all other haiku books?

For centuries, the Japanese haiku has been one of the world's most dazzling poetic forms. In just three short lines, it captures the sublime beauty of nature--the croak of the bullfrog, the buzzing of the dragonfly, the shriek of the cicada, the scream of the cormorant. Now, with Haikus for Jews, there is finally a collection that celebrates the many advantages of staying indoors.

Inspired by ancient Zen teachings and timeless Jewish noodging, this masterful work is filled with insights that will make you exclaim, "Ah!" or at least "Oy!" Whether you are Jewish or you simply enjoy a good kosher haiku, these chai-kus (so called because of their high chutzpah content) are certain to amuse. What's more, with each poem limited to seventeen syllables, Haikus for Jews is perfect for people in a hurry. Find out why God has made these The Chosen Haikus.

This book was also a gift to my son in-law. I have not personnally read the book but he LOVES it. Actually loves this author and can't get enough of him.

Editorial Review:

Baxter Black, cowboy poet and former large animal veterinarian, has just published his latest collection of tall tales and poems about the real life of cowboys in the 21st century. He's at his best, draggin' cowboys in and out of technicolor wrecks as you laugh and cringe along. A life time in the wonderous world of cows, ranches, rodeos, sheepherders, stockdogs, team ropers, feedlots, horseshoers, veterinarians, cowboys and women wearing chaps has given Dr. Black an enormous palette upon which to paint his version of the romance and potholes that make bein' a cowboy today the source of such great incredulity and inspiration!

Comprehensive compilation of Limericks 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Mr. Legman has put together the largest compilation of limericks I've ever seen.

He is true to their form. As he says, "This is the largest collection of limericks ever published, erotic or otherwise. Of the 1700 printed here, none are otherwise."

If you are prudish, stay away. You will be shocked by the language in these short poems.

On the other hand, if you are open-minded, you will be entertained by the endless variety of inventive language in these limericks. Mr. Legman has helpfully categorized them by subject matter, such as, "Little Romances," "Oral Irregularity," and "Abuses of the Clergy."

This is a monument to creativity, even if of lowbrow quality.

A great gift to welcome new commers to Texas! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

In 1968 when my parents moved to Texas they received this book as a gift. Inside the cover their friends wrote, "A few things are different in this great state. We just wanted to keep you posted. Hope ya'll are working on your accents!" Almost 50 years after its first printing this book is still delightful! It captures the image of Texas that, although not always true, has made it a famous state. This book means a lot to me, and this year I am buying a bunch of copies to give to my 7 nephews and nieces. Thanks for keeping this classic in stock.

Fun gift idea for the true texan or wanna be texan! 3 out of 5 stars.

Hilarious and sobering, intermittently 3 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

The verbal back-stabbing in this book is absolutely hilarious.
For example:

On Oliver Goldsmith-
"Poor fellow! He hardly knew an ass from a mule, nor a
turkey from a goose but when he saw it on the table."
--Richard Cumberland

On Whitman-
"Leaves of Grass-To call it poetry in any sense, would be mere abuse of language."
-William Allingham

"Democracy consists of choosing your dictators, after they've told you what you want to hear."

"The U.S. brags about its political system, but the president says one thing during the election, something else when he takes office, something else during midterm, and something else when he leaves."

"Some fellows get credit for being conservative when they are only stupid."

"Elections are held to delude the populace into thinking they are participating in government."

Editorial Review:

A wickedly entertaining collection of caustic quips and witty criticisms.

A wonderful book! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I'm a student teacher and I have used this book in the class I'm with and they love it! The words are powerful and have a very interesitng rhyming pattern. Each page has a new line, that explains the page before.

What I like best about this books is how is repeats itself over and over. The kids love it. Towards the end of the book, they were saying it along with me.

The illustraions are INCREDIBLE!!!

If you're a teacher, I highly suggest you get this book. If you're a parent, I highly suggest you buy this book. You won't be sorry.

Wonderful pictures and powerful language 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book has been a favorite of my 6 year old son since he was 3 or so. For quite a while, it was almost an every evening affair. Now that he's older, he is starting to realize pieces are taken from other stories, and the wonderful circular silliness really appeals to him. Finally, it's a wonderful book to read aloud, playing games with rhythm and speed. Few of his books have held his interest for so long and continue to delight him. How much more do you want in a children's book?

Editorial Review:

The author of the Caldecott Honor book The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales pokes affectionate fun at classic fairy tales in this richly illustrated picture book. Readers will meet a distinguished cast of characters who seem oddly familiar but somehow changed. Full color.

SHARK IN THE PARK 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

AN OK BOOK. NOT ANYTHING I'D WANT TO HAVE TO READ OVER AND OVER.

Fun colors, happy drawings in a cute guessing game book. 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is full of repetition and rhyming fun. Timothy is at the park testing out his new telescope and thinks he keeps seeing a shark. Three of the pages have holes through them so that one might guess what he is seeing before the next page is turned. It never truly is a shark that he sees in the park but this is a fun book to read with a child ages 2-6 to see their expressions, guesses to the telescope hole page and reaction to what it really is that Timothy is seeing. This story would be fun to use in a kindergarten class when shapes are being taught.

Fantastically Fun! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

From the colorful front cover to the delightful ending, this is a wonderfully repetitive book that finishes with a delicious surprise. I've read this book innumerable times to patrons and guests of the Children's Museum of Denver and to Head Start classes throughout the Mile High City and it has never failed to charm my audiences. The book is artfully designed with full-color illustrations throughout and ingenious cut-out overlays that enhance the story. I enjoy any book that can be acted as much as read, and this book lends itself to over-the-top gestures. The clever refrain also encourages listeners to join in the narration and will leave them smiling at the end.

Editorial Review:

Timothy Pope has a brand new telescope and he's testing it out at the park. Children will delight in peeping through the die-cut holes and guessing what Tim has spotted. Is that really a shark he can see? Turn the page and find out.
