There are better versions than this one 1 out of 5 stars.

So to start, there is a huge problem with this page. If you utilize Amazon's Search Inside feature for this version of the book it is actually showing you the inside of a different copy of Poor Richards Almanack. What you see is definitely not the inside of this book and I'll tell you why later.

Another problem with this page is the fact that people are reviewing the content of Poor Richards Almanack and giving you, the consumer, a history lesson on the book. But come on... the content of the book is pretty much a given. If you're not familiar with the Poor Richards Alamanack, then it's probably a good idea to check it out from a library before you buy it. You would want to own a copy simply for novelty's sake.

So onto the review of the actual product... This is a very poor copy in terms of quality (just like this review). This is just speculation, but it literally appears as if someone from the publisher went to the copy machine with an original copy of the book, pressed the "Enlarge 150%" button, photocopied the entire original book onto larger paper, bound it, put a cover on it, and sold it as the copy you see here. The black space you see on the cover is about the size of the margins within the book. This creates an obnoxious amount of white space around the paragraphs which in turn makes the book difficult to read. On top of this, some of the pages are slightly crooked.

So as I've stated, the content is exactly like the original, but you can easily find a better version than this one. Unless the book was intended for people with impaired vision, there is no reason the original book should have been blown up and placed on 2 inch margins. I would steer clear of this version and find a better one.

As a side note, there are several versions of Poor Richards Almanack. Some have his quotes reorganized into categories and some versions have his quotes re-written into more modern language. And there is, of course, the original. For Christmas, I got my Mom the original as well as the one with the organized quotes. So I guess it's whatever your preference is.

Editorial Review:

Franklin’s Autobiography is one of the most famous works in American literature. He started it as a private collection of anecdotes for his son, but soon it was transformed into a work of history, both personal and national, revealing Franklin as the man who, as Herman Melville said, possessed “deep worldly wisdom and polished Italian tact, gleaming under an air of Arcadian unaffectedness.

Editorial Review:

Bill Maher is on the forefront of the new wave of comedians who have begun to influence and shape political debate through their comedy. He is best known not just for being funny, but for advocating truth over sensitivity and taking on the political establishment.Maher first came to national attention as the host of the hit ABC-TV program Politically Incorrect, where he offered a combustible mixture of irreverence and acerbic humor that helped him to garner a loyal following, as well as a reputation for being a controversial bad boy. Bill Maher's popular new HBO television show, Real Time, has put Maher more front and center than ever before. Partic-ularly one regular segment on the show, entitled "New Rules," has been a hit with his ever-growing legion of fans. It is the part of the show during which Maher takes serious aim, bringing all of his intelligence, incisiveness, wit, and his signature exasperation to bear on topics ranging from cell phones ("I don't need my cell phone to take pictures or access the Internet. I just need it to make a phone call. From everywhere! Not just the places it likes!") to fast food ("No McDonald's in hospitals. I'm not kidding!) to the conservative agenda ("Stop claiming it's an agenda. It's not an agenda. It's a random collection of laws that your corporate donors paid you to pass.")His new book, the first since his bestselling When You Ride ALONE You Ride with bin Laden, brings these brilliantly conceived riffs and rants to the written page. Appropriately titled New Rules, the book will collect some of the best of the rules derived from previously written material and will also contain substantial new material, including some longer form "editorials"--of course with a twist and bite that only Bill Maher can deliver.

Editorial Review:

The stinkers, the rascals, the reprobates. . . and the just plain dumb.

(Yes, Bill, he's talking about you.)

Geraldo Rivera. The Coca-Cola Company. Victoria Gotti. Tom Cruise. Various members of the Bush administration. All have earned the dishonor of "Worst Person in the World," awarded by MSNBC's witty and controversial reporter Keith Olbermann on his nightly MSNBC show Countdown with Keith Olbermann. Now, he brings all his bronze, silver, and gold medalists together in this wildly entertaining collection that reveals just how twisted people can be—and how much fun it is to call them out on it.

From tongue-in-cheek observations to truly horrific accounts, Olbermann skewers both the mighty and the meek, the well-known and the anonymous for their misdeeds, including:

Ann Coulter, for, among other things, calling Muslims "ragheads" in a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington

Barbara Bush, for making a generous donation to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund earmarked exclusively for the purchase of computer software . . . software sold by her son, Neil

The staff of Your World with Neil Cavuto, for the story about the murders of Iraqi civilians that was accompanied by the on-screen graphic: "All-out Civil War in Iraq: Could It Be a Good Thing?"

Olbermann also reports on some of the recent fallout from his awards, such as the controversy with John Gibson and the mysterious disappearance of remarks about Cindy Sheehan on Rush Limbaugh's Web site. Plus, he reveals the winner of the most coveted award of all: "Worst in Show."

Gayle King, editor-at-large of O, The Oprah Magazine and host of "The Gayle King Show" on Oprah and Friends

Crisscrossing the aisle with wicked glee; no matter which book you finish first, you'll immediately want to run out and get the other one to discover what he said about your side. Tiny little book, fairly large price 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Smaller than a 3X5 card, it has a big book price. Hardbound, it'll last a while. History of the last 100 years. Cute gift idea. Decent read. Nothing extra special about it. Kind of gimmicky.

The Best of The Onion Books 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've read several of The Onion's books, and this one stands out as the funniest. A few of my favorite headlines: "Kennedy Slain by CIA, Mafia, Castro, LBJ, Teamsters, Freemasons,"; "Stalin Announces Five-Year 'Everybody Dies' Plan"; and "World's Largest Metaphor Hits Ice-Berg". Hopefully we can all learn something from The Onion's version of history, or we'll be condemned to repeat it!

Need to know some history 4 out of 5 stars.

It sounds so incredibly good that you don't know sometimes if what they are saying is true or false. You really need a strong background in the subject on some of the information to get it.

Editorial Review:

Definitely not for the easily offended, Our Dumb Century was a New York Times #1 bestseller chronicling 100 years of American history with dry humor and cynicism. This Miniature Edition™ distills the brilliant wit and satire of the original from "America's Finest News Source."

SOMETIMES THOUGHT PROVOKING, AND AT OTHER TIMES LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY ! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As a long time George Carlin fan (in the early 1970s I owned George's then new Class Clown album on vinyl, and I saw him live in the 1990s), I couldn't wait to read his first hardcover book, so I went out and bought a brand new copy of Brain Droppings when it was first released in 1997. I wasn't disappointed at all with the book then, and still occasionally read that same copy for a good laugh.

Brain Droppings is a sometimes hilarious, sometimes mildly amusing, collection of George's maverick hippie stand-up comedy routines, peculiar personal opinions, and random thoughts on the English language and human behavior. Some of his famous and most popular routines like "A Place For Your Stuff" and "Baseball And Football" are included along with several lists of his favorite redundancies (foreign imports), favorite euphemisms (police clubs = batons), favorite oxymorons (original copy), and people he can do without (anyone who refers to Charles Manson as "Chuck"). It's Carlin, so the languange is definitely R-rated, but not vulgar or unreasonably profane. It's completely off the wall and out of leftfield. He finds humor and absurdity even in the most mundane:

If you ever have chicken at lunch and chicken at dinner, do you ever wonder if the two chickens knew each other?

Poor confetti. It's useful life lasts about two seconds. And it can never be used again.

I think it would be fun to go on "Jeopardy" and never buzz in. Just stand there for half an hour, never talk, and then go home.

Brain Droppings is a carefree and interesting read, and because it's full of one liners, lists, and short essays, it's easily readable in bits and pieces from time to time after the first read. It's an amusing and quirky look at life from a great, much loved, and widely respected comic genius who's original and unorthodox style inspired millions to think for themselves and laugh at the absurdity of life.

I AM NOT IN COMPLIANCE
George Carlin

Editorial Review:

George Carlin's been working the crowd since "the counterculture" became "the over-the-counter culture" around 1967 or so; his new book, Brain Droppings, surfs on three decades of touring-in-support. It's the purest version of book-as-candy that one could imagine, serving up humor in convenient, bite-sized packages. Snack on chewy one-liners like "A meltdown sounds like fun. Like some kind of cheese sandwich." Or: "If you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten." Brain Droppings also contains highlights from Carlin's concert repertoire, and that more than makes up for the occasional spray of pointless nihilism. Tell us, George, what exactly were you going for with "Kill your pet" and "Satan is cool"? Quick--hide the paper before Daddy sees it! Still, if you're a fan of this sarcastic semanticist who's given Bad Attitude not necessarily a good name, but at least a comfy bank account, by all means rush out and snag Brain Droppings. Carlin's book melts in your mind, not in your hand.

The very human side of an intimidatingly erudite polymath 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is a delicious trove of correspondence that shows WFB's sense of humor and wall-to-wall good nature. He spars with critics and detractors, tweaks friends like Art Buchwald and spreads his trademark wit, logophilia and his positively infectious joie de vivre over the decades. My favorite line is from a 12 or 13-year old asking for advice on life. WFB's response: never grow up. He was a man who very obviously cherished and loved God, family and country and his loss is acutely felt. This book is a delightful snapshot of the many facets of his personality.

Editorial Review:

Who knew that William F. Buckley Jr., the quintessential conservative, invented the blog decades before the World Wide Web came into existence? National Review, like nearly all magazines, has always published letters from readers. In 1967 the magazine decided that certain letters merited different treatment, and Buckley, the editor, began a column called “Notes & Asides,” in which he personally answered the most notable and outrageous letters. The selections in this book, culled from four decades of these columns, include exchanges with such figures as Ronald Reagan, Eric Sevareid, Richard Nixon, A. M. Rosenthal, Auberon Waugh, John Kenneth Galbraith, and Arthur Schlesinger Jr. There are also hilarious exchanges with ordinary readers, as well as letters from Buckley to various organizations and government agencies.

Tom Tomorrow a/k/a Dan Perkins is extremely insightful when reviewing our current political climate. This book is a must read for all of his fans who may have forgotten his prediction of the tech and housing bubbles, as well as everyone else who do not read his work on a weekly basis. Dpn't just buy one copy, buy several to give as gifts to those who still need enlightening.

Editorial Review:

Welcome to a world where George Bush and Dick Cheney are secretly radical leftists trying to destroy the Republican party from within; where Jeffrey Dahmer is a celebrated conservative pundit and the author of such instant bestsellers as Liberals: Kill Them and Eat Them; and where Richard Perle hosts the NeoCon Game Show, awarding fabulous prizes to the contestant with the most outlandishly wrong answers.

Welcome to the world of Tom Tomorrow, whose subversive new anthology skewers the absurdities of American political culture -- and the depravities of the Bush era -- with the sardonic wit and keen insight his many loyal readers have come to expect. From Hurricane Katrina to the latest presidential campaign, these cartoons provide an unflinching look at where we've been -- and just how bright we can expect the future to be.

Editorial Review:

Outrageous, offensive, and mind-boggling political blunders of the last fifty years, collected here for the first time.

There’s nothing more enjoyable than when political bigwigs stick their feet in their mouth. Whether discussing foreign policy, the choice of vice-presidential running mate, the State of the Union, or the state of their marriage, the chances to screw up political careers are seemingly endless. In Idiots, Hypocrites, Crimals, and More Idiots, humorist Paul Slansky gathers together some of the most outrageous, hypocritical, self-serving, demagogic, criminal, offensive, surreal, and just plain idiotic moments in American politics over the last fifty years. With deliciously subversive sections entitled “Inaccurate Prognostications,” “Delicious Wallows In Schadenfreude,” “Bizarre Blurts,” and “Freudian Slips,” this book brings together the worst mistakes America’s politicians, policy-makers, and wonk-heads ever had the audacity to commit—sometimes two or three times.
