Editorial Review:

Celebrating the Bard in all his bawdy glory, a hilarious and insightful look into the down-and-dirty sexual puns lurking in Shakespeare’s body of work

London’s Elizabethan theaters were located in the seedy part of town, close to whorehouses but never far from Puritanical scorn. In that climate, Shakespeare became a master of the double entendre, crafting lines and scenes that unfolded in a variety of meanings—the wickedly funny, the suggestively erotic, and even hard-hitting send-ups of corrupt politicians and clerics.

From The Two Gentlemen of Verona to The Tempest and King Lear, the plays and poems pulsate with puns on body parts and what they do, and reveal shocking meanings beneath the brilliant codes.

Shakespeare’s genius lies in his matchless understanding of the human condition, but for centuries we’ve been deprived of the full extent of one of his most brilliant dramatic devices. Finally, acclaimed Shakespearean scholar Pauline Kiernan unlocks the meaning behind the coded words. FILTHY SHAKESPEARE presents more than 70 examples of the Bard at his raunchiest, with each passage translated into modern English and the hidden meanings of the original words explained. A fascinating introduction shows how Shakespeare’s amazing range of wordplay had its roots in the social and political reality of Elizabethan and Jacobean England.

Revealing and riotously funny, FILTHY SHAKESPEARE is the perfect gift for anyone who wants to rediscover the master of the sexual pun at his most inventive, and an intriguing look into the richness and complexity of Shakespeare’s language and his world.

Punished is Fabulous! 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm in the 3rd grade and i just read Punished...wow! it's the best one on my reading record sheet! When Logan goes to the library to study for his research, someone stops him from running in the library and he gets his face puffed up with fairy dust which scrambled his brains. Now, whenever he talks a pun comes out. To cure this evil curse, he must go out and find certain types of words. I like it because everything in the story ties together (if you know what I mean.)

Punished 5 out of 5 stars.

Is a good read for my daughter. She has read it several times and still won't let anybody else have it!

a good book for kids who enjoy wordplay 4 out of 5 stars.

Punished! tells the story of a boy named Logan who accidently collides with the mysterious Professor Wordsworth in the reference section of the library. After saying he is sorry, Wordsworth states that words are not always enough. Wordsworth decides that Logan needs to be "punished" and blows dust on him from an old book.

Immediately after his encounter with Professor Wordsworth, Logan realizes something is definitely wrong... everyone groans after he talks. Analyzing his speech, Logan now realizes he is speaking in puns. He tracks down Wordsworth a the library and asks how he can undo his "punishment". The professor then sets Logan to three separate tasks. First he has to gather oxymorons, then anagrams, and finally palindromes and bring them back to the professor in time, or Logan can't be cured.

I know of David Lubar from his short story collections In The Land of the Lawn Weenies and The Invasion of the Road Weenies. Those stories are somewhat twisted and mildly creepy, but appeal to a lot of my fourth grade students. Punished! doesn't play up the creepiness found in Lubar's short stories, but has some similar mysterious elements. The novel's action moves along and is quite predictable, but this book would appeal to third through fifth graders who enjoy wordplay. Recommended, but not essential.

Editorial Review:

Logan and his friend Benedict run into the wrong guy at the library–-literally. When Logan slams into the reference guy in the basement and gives him a little lip, Logan gets punished, really and truly punished. He has three days to complete three tasks before Professor Wordsworth will lift the magical punishment that keeps getting Logan in even more trouble.

Puns from the Pun Pundit himself 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The only thing more fun than reading Richard Lederer's book about puns and wordplay is going to one of Richard's lecturers and watching the words fly fast and furious. Sometimes, Richard appears on NPR, but until you can hear him live, "Get Thee to a Punnery" will be the best way to sample his intellectual brand of zany humor. This is one of those books that is just great for reading and laughing outloud, grabbing the arm of the nearest person and pointing to some really funny stuff. If you like word play and puns, this is the Mother Lode.

The punniest book you can find 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I've had this book for 10 years and everytime I'm with a new crowd of people I bring it out, and soon after people are rolling on the floor. The funniest sections are "Prinderella and The Cince" and "Ladle Rat Rotten Hut". If you practice enough to read these aloud everyone will be amazed and entertained. The only down side is that there are alot of "un-funny" sections, but there are jewels sprinkled within, and for the price I would definitely recommend this.

Editorial Review:

Get Thee to a Punnery proves that the pun is mightier than the sword . . . and here are sidesplitting puns of every color, stripe and persuasion to suit every whim. Even if you don't know that your humerus is your funny bone, this is the book for you.

Fun for all ages 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

In this highly entertaining book, punmaster Richard Lederer reveals the tricks of the punster's trade while challenging readers to create original wordplay of their own. In sixteen chapters, with titles such as "Calling on the Homophone," "Puns That Babylon," and "Tairy Fales," the author explains how to use homophones, homographs, and spoonerisms for comical effect while exploring knock-knock jokes, Tom Swifties, and other types of jokes and riddles based on the deft manipulation of sound and meaning. The author presents a clear and simple explanation of each form, provides numerous examples, and then invites readers to create original jokes, rhymes, and puzzles of their own. Language-lovers of all ages will appreciate the wealth of wit and humor presented on these pages.

Great for my 3rd Grader 5 out of 5 stars.

My third-grade daughter couldn't put this book down! Absolutely loved the "Pun Fun" section and the "'Let's play a Game' said Tom Swiftly" section. The booked is marked up and dog-eared.

What a thrill to find this book again! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As a child some 30 years ago I used to borrow this book from the library again and again. In my late teens I thought it would be a kick to look up that most favorite childhood book, only to find it available no more. But now I can buy it! I still remember so many of those goofy, beautifully illustrated mind twisters, but I'm really going to love seeing the ones that time has long hidden from my memory.

This book is a nostalgic treasure that has definitely stood the test of time, I've no doubt it continues to enthrall young people today. And I'm very pleased for Remy Charlip, in finding in these reviews that SO MANY of us remember this book from 20-30 years ago, went out of our way to track it down, and continue to share this book with future generations!

The best Aunt! 5 out of 5 stars.

25 years ago I used to read this book over & over & over to my baby sister. After I had kids of my own we used to talk about how much we loved this book. She has searched for it over the years even though we could only remember clever bits from it. A little while ago she found it! I'm ordering a copy for myself and both my grandchildren. She is the best Aunt in the Universe! Thanks

The PUNishment fits the Rhyme! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

If you are a "word person" like I am, or trying to get students interested in English, like I am, this book is just what you want! This fun-filled and pun-filled book is divided into 4 parts, basically each one dealing with rhyming puns from each of these four fields: Music, Geography, Food and Animals. The reader should probably be at least 8 or 9, but it can easily interest a 6th grader. J. P. Sandy did the super-retro looking cartooning, while Brian P. Cleary, who wrote all of those terrific books on the parts of speech, like "Hairy, Scary, Ordinary - What is an Adjective?" provided the text. He also taught me how to TEACH poetry with the book, "Rainbow Soup - Adventures in Poetry."

Editorial Review:

Ready to laugh until you're horse? Brian P. Cleary, author of the best-selling Words Are CATegorical(tm) series and the poetry collection Rainbow Soup, is off on a gnu hilarious adventure in language--PUNS! This imaginative collection of silly and sophisticated puns uncovers double meanings that are kind dove hiding in everyday phrases. A helpful pun-unciation guide is included on porpoise to help ewe give it a try!

A Delightful Vocabulary Builder 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

One might think that the silliness promised by this book's description would distract-- or even work against-- effective learning of new French words. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that just the opposite is true. The book's puns facilitate visual learning through its many punny images. Can you ever forget that the French word for cow is "(une) vache" after you've seen a cow dressed in her ra-vache-ing evening attire? Many of the puns are accompanied by "fun facts" relating to French culture and history that add considerably to this book's educational value. You'd be hard pressed to find another book that makes learning so much fun at such a reasonable price. Buy it!

Editorial Review:

A madcap primer that makes learning French a joking matter

This zany joke-fest makes mastering French vocabulary riotous good fun for your kids ages 10 and up as well as the young at heart. The World's Wackiest French Joke Book features 500 groan-worthy puns and clever turns of phrase, along with 18 screwball line drawings and fascinating culture notes.

This book makes me want to kill myself. The author should just defenestrate himself as soon as possible.

Editorial Review:

As Oscar Levant said many years ago, "A pun is the lowest form of wit, especially if you didn't think of it first." In this lively collection you'll find a hilarious abundance of pun-ishment for the millions who can't resist giving a word or phrase a twist... and ammunition for many occasions from movie, TV and theatre wags; from the wits of Wall Street and Washington... the gems from poets and pundits and some of the bottom-of-the-barrel crumbs!

Golf is like taxes. You drive hard to get to the green and wind up in the hole.

A monastery in financial trouble decided to go into the fish-and-chips industry to raise revenues. One night a customer knocked on the door and a monk answered. "Are you the fishfriar?" the customer asked. "No," the robed figurereplied, "I'm the chipmonk."

The book also contains a PUNdix, a PUNabridged dictionary and a collection of the best... and worst... jokes in the world!
