And then a miracle occurs 3 out of 5 stars.

This book contains the famous cartoon containing "then a miracle occurs".

Quite a bit, apparently. 5 out of 5 stars.

OK, so I'm a scientist, but it's one of the few cartoon
books that stands re-reading. And, it's not just
me. One of my daughter's 7 year old soccer buddies was
flipping through and giggling through the cartoons
she understood.

It's understated humor, and it often takes a leap to
get from the caption to the laugh, but every one is
different and fresh. The facial expressions are particularly
good.

An existence proof of how many ways science is indeed funny 5 out of 5 stars.

The answer to the question is an emphatic, "A great deal, but only in the hands of the right person." Harris is without question one of the right people. In addition to being funny, his cartoons are topical, sometimes biting and send a clear message. He lampoons scientists, people who worship science, those who exploit science for their own ends and all who have no respect for the natural structure of the planet. My favorite is the man in a suit sitting at a desk at what is a research institution. The caption reads, "I think, therefore I am paid." A close second is the first cartoon in the book, which is a modification of the famous painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. That painting shows God reaching his index finger out to Adam, who is also reaching back. In this cartoon, a microorganism is at the end of God's finger. Funny and yet so very profound.

Editorial Review:

What do the discovery of the coffee bean, the invention of the aqualung, the perception of the importance of the size of the moon, the conquest of smallpox, and supersonic flight all have in common? They are milestones in the history of science, a saga that began before the ancient Greeks and one that will continue for thousands of years to come. These and other fascinating stories about several of the world's most important inventions and discoveries are featured in The Book of Scientfic Anecdotes. This witty, informative, and highly readable collection includes more than sixty anecdotes chosen and edited by science writer Adrian Berry. Divided into eleven sections, the book covers topics ranging from man's exploration of the world - and space - to the revolution in communications, scientific martyrs, and "bogus science". It contains a wealth of fascinating, little-known facts and information, as well as anecdotes about people who have played crucial roles in the progress of science - Louis Pasteur, Einstein, and Galileo - along-side lesser-known individuals -" Lucy", the woman who lived more than three million years ago; Gilbert Vernam, the creator of the "one-time pad", the world's first unbreakable cipher; and J. S. Haldane, the only man to have tested safely in the mines by reciting Shakespeare. The scientific achievements of this century - relativity, quantum mechanics, nuclear power, genetic engineering, space travel, jet aircraft, desktop computers, and the beginnings of artificial intelligence - have swept away most of the predictions of the last. What do these breakthroughs augur for the twenty-first century? The Book of Scientific Anecdotes illuminates some of the inventionsand discoveries that have changed the world, and the people who made them.

Have you ever seen a dinosaur in your backyard? Of course not. But where did they go?

What did a Parasaurolophus sound like? Why did the Spinosaurus have enormous fins along its back? Do you ever wonder what a Tyrannosaurus rex ate for dinner? Perhaps it feasted on freshly caught Maiasaura. Or maybe it preferred slow-roasted Pterodactyl. Scientists aren’t sure what a T. rex’s meal was like, but they’re fairly certain it didn’t involve pizza.

There’s a lot we don’t know about dinosaurs. We may not have all the answers—but laugh your way through this fun-filled book and you’ll discover the mysteries!

A good laugh! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

After working all day, and sometimes all night, at the university, I like to read humorous works to help me put it all in perspective. Whether it be academia, science, business, law, etc., Harris find the humor in these professions. I figure if I can still laugh at the end of the day, I am doing well. Harris helps me laugh.

Tremendously Funny! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

By far, the best collection of Science, math, and computer jokes I've seen. Few of the jokes are misses, and there's even an explanation for some of the most obscure gags. The section on how various professions prove numbers prime is a scream.

Absolute Zero Gravity is a great gift idea for Geeks! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of those Rolling-On-The-Floor (LMAO) books that really only makes sense if you are a Geek yourself. It's a great gift and it's very lighthearted. Most of the jokes/anecdotes are short. Warning: it's adictive...

Hilarious! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book contains side-splitting humor for anyone who appreciates science, engineering, or mathematics (or not!). The collection of light bulb jokes is amazing. Too bad it's out of print. It made a wonderful Christmas present for all my nerdy family members and friends, and some of them kept asking me for copies so they could pass it on.

This book will definitely tickle the funny bone of both scientists & non-scientists alike! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is just a collection of jokes, anecdotes, limericks & riddles revealing the funny side of physics, biology, mathematics, & other branches of science. I often buy books like this one - in fact, I have already amassed a vast collection over the years. I will often browse them from time to time, just to keep my intellectual mind, - not just my funny bone - alive!

Absolute Zero Gravity captures the levity of the world of science. I always have a ardent fascination for science, technology & discovery.

To some people, science may seem stuffy & serious, but behind the equations, observations, & reactions lies a hidden affinity for the irrational, the paradoxical, & the simply amusing. From Darwin to Einstein, from astronomy to zoology, Absoulte Zero Gravity includes all the funniest manifestations of the scientific method: from irreverent anecdotes & brilliant insults to practical jokes, experimental graffiti, & proofs of the absurd e.g.

The astrophysicist's dilemma:

If the universe is really expanding, why can't you find a parking place?

Let me share with readers one interesting joke from the section under 'Science, Nonscience & AntiScience':

An engineer, a physicist, a mathematician, & a mystic were asked to name the greatest invention of all time. The engineer chose fire, which gave humanity power over matter. The physicist chose the wheel, which gave humanity power over space. The mathematician chose the alphabet, which gave humanity power over symbols. The mystic chose the thermos bottle.

"Why a thermos bottle?" the others asked.

"Because the thermos keeps hot liquids hot in winter & cold liquids cold in summer."

"Yes - so what?"

"Think about it," said the mystic reverently. "That little bottle - how does it know?"

Let me say this: Absolute Zero Gravity will definitely tickle the funny bone of both scientists & non-scientists alike!

Editorial Review:

In this fascinating book, Nobel Prize winner Pierre-Gilles de Gennes wittily captures the lives of personalities from both the academic and the industrial world in delightful bite-size stories. Most of the characters in this collection are like those in Aesop's fables, but in modern-day research settings. The book provides a critical account of aberrations (fortunately rare) of the scientific community. Many lessons can be drawn from the stories. For the young researcher, this book is like a telescope: for seeing other human beings beyond his or her laboratory. For the administrator, this book is like a microscope: for seeing inside the human beings huge and complex structures. However, like Aesop's fables, you would not offer the book as a gift to anyone other than a close and wise friend.

Petit Point is not a book to be devoured in a single sitting. It is one to be savored and reflected upon — it shows what the world may be like and what we ourselves may become. It is like a mirror — to be visited from time to time.
