Editorial Review:

Have you ever wondered what it feels like:

to be stuck in a tornado?

“[It] is exactly the feel of a freight train approaching—that low, ever-louder howl and the shuddering ground.”

to participate in an orgy?

“And all the while, the thought that keeps going through your mind (and through the cab ride home, and into breakfast the next day): ‘I’m at an orgy! I’m at an orgy!’”

to have a severe stutter?

“The thing is, there’s a disconnect thing between my mind and my tongue. My mind’s processing a thousand words a minute, and the tongue is only squeezing out ten or twelve.”

to be a mob hitman?

“It’s nerve-racking. Don’t let anyone tell you any different. Anybody who’s any good at this is concentrating with every nerve in their body, trying to get it done right and trying not to get caught.”

to be 105 years old?

“I was born in 1897 and I’ve seen a lot in the world. I’ve seen everything there is to see. You look back and tell yourself, ‘What have I been doing all these years?’”

If these tidbits whet your appetite for real, first-person accounts of some of life’s most exhilarating, harrowing, or downright strange experiences, then you’ll be sucked in by Esquire Presents: What It Feels Like. Collected by the ever-curious editors of Esquire magazine, here are more than fifty gripping tales—straight from the mouths of the people who’ve lived them.

The pick of Furry Logic 1 out of 5 stars.

The recipient of this gift absolutely loved it. It came in time for Christmas. Thank you!

Impossible not to smile when you read her books . . . 5 out of 5 stars.

I have Furry Logic, Laugh at Life and Wild Wisdom and this book contains favorite selections from these three.

All of these books make me smile whenever I open them up and are guaranteed to brighten my day. The paintings are simply charming and the quotations are perfect.

Great little gifts for just about anyone on your list -- and you owe it to yourself to get one (or all of them) just for you.

Editorial Review:

Jane Seabrook's sly humour and achingly cute watercolours of animals have snuggled their way into the hearts of thousands of people around the world. Now all her most memorable offerings are all here in one easel-book, perfect to warm up any office desk, kitchen counter or bedside table. Equisitely detailed depictions of birds, bears, penguins and other creatures caught up in the joy and drudgery of life are paired with short proverbs to put a new spin on modern times, or spikey witticisms such as 'It's been lovely, but I have to scream now.' This is the same quirky format as the bestselling "Bitch" books from Ten Speed - "You Say I'm a Bitch Like It's a Bad Thing" (1580086373) and "That's Queen Bitch to You" (1580087485) - sold over 200,000 copies collectively worldwide.

Worth it if only to laugh at some of the scenarios 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The book is extremely entertaining and it might save your life, too. It covers scenarios James Bond would aspire to.

"How to endure a Turkish prison"
"How to survive an elephant stampede"
"How to survive a nuclear attack"
"How to take a bullet"
"How to control a runaway hot air balloon"
"How to break a gorilla's grip"

Plus other scenarios that are more practical and more likely for one to encounter.

"How to free a limb from a beartrap"
"How to survive on an iceberg"
"How to survivean attack by a pack of wolves"
"How to recover a motorcycle spinning out of control"
"How to survive a 16-car pile-up"
"How to survive a mine collapse"

Bottom line, there is some practical advice here for emergencies, but it is the entertainment, laugh-out-loud factor that makes it worth it.

Editorial Review:

How could it get any worse?

Whether stranded on an iceberg, being chased by a pack of wolves, spinning out on a motorcycle, or being buried alive, The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Extreme Edition has all the right stuff for those times when everything goes wrong.

Editorial Review:

One of America's most popular humor series returns with a brand-new collection of hilariously macabre mishaps and misadventures. Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves from it, The Darwin Awards III: Survival of the Fittest shows once more how uncommon common sense still is.

Featuring science and safety discussions, and filled with illustrations depicting inspiring examples of evolution in action, The Darwin Awards III includes over one hundred all-new stories. Readers will celebrate Darwin Award winners who made the "ultimate sacrifice," wonder at the misguided pluck of Honorable Mentions who survived their own bad judgment, and look on in awestruck amusement at Personal Accounts shared with the world by the perpetrators themselves.

From the sheriff who inadvertently shot himself twice, to the highway robbers who blocked traffic with their car and were hit by a truck; from the artist who strung a "shell" necklace of live ammunition, to the man crushed by the branch he'd just severed, The Darwin Awards III proves again that when it comes to stupidity, no species does it like we do.

Editorial Review:

Research on humor is carried out in a number of areas in psychology, including the cognitive (What makes something funny?), developmental (when do we develop a sense of humor?), and social (how is humor used in social interactions?) Although there is enough interest in the area to have spawned several societies, the literature is dispersed in a number of primary journals, with little in the way of integration of the material into a book.

Dr. Martin is one of the best known researchers in the area, and his research goes across subdisciplines in psychology to be of wide appeal. This is a singly authored monograph that provides in one source, a summary of information researchers might wish to know about research into the psychology of humor. The material is scholarly, but the presentation of the material is suitable for people unfamiliar with the subject-making the book suitable for use for advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses on the psychology of humor-which have not had a textbook source.

2007 AATH Book Award for Humor/Laughter Research category!

Very Disappointed 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am usually a very fast reader and this book was very difficult for me to sit down and read for any amount of time, no where near as witty as I hoped. There are a few lines that made me smile but for the most part the bookwas pointless and very unhelpful.

Editorial Review:

The Between Boyfriends Book is an honest, hilarious look at the world of dating--and not dating--that will have fans rushing back for multiple copies to press on the psychic wounds of their afflicted friends. Chupack not only puts voice to the cheerful brutality that shapes young women's love lives, but creates bonus coinages to describe instantly recognizable dating tropes, such as:
* "sexual sorbet": the first person you sleep with after a breakup to remove the taste of a bad relationship
* "lone rangered": to have had a relationship end with no goodbye, no answers, just the vague feelings you have no idea who that man was
* "premature 'we'jaculation": a common dating dysfunction where one member of the couple starts using "we" before the other is ready.

A light but useful backup for your main daily meditation 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This light and breezy little daily meditation guide would be more aptly called a daily passing thought guide, but often has humorous or insightful little blurbs unlike the stuff seen anywhere else. It makes a nice counterpoint to weightier material, although the brief comments can have loads of mental mass if they catch you at the right moment in your recovery. As a regular user of five daily meditation guides (call me eager in recovery!) I wouldn't want this to be my only food for thought on any given day, but it's a great side-dish. I've bought it as a gift for others who might shirk from more ponderous volumes, and it's been well-received. There's a definite codependency flavor to most of the quotes and commentary. Worth checking out!

Editorial Review:

Here is a daily meditation book that addresses the need for humor in Twelve Step living. Each entry takes a humorous, ironic, or rueful look at such aspects of recovery as denial grandiosity, gratitude, and change. By turns irreverent and provocative, this little book can cause a lot of laughter and perhaps even aid in recovery.

"the practical socialite thinks of everything" 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This tastefully designed Book of Etiquette reveals the invaluable advice of Keeping Up Appearances Hyacinth Bucket who has waged "eternal vigilance against encroaching tides of indelicacy" to make her suburban district "one of the most sought-after postal codes in the land." The book is written in the voice of Hyacinth herself as she answers letters from her myriad of admirers. In this book, the aspiring hostess will learn how to organize a candlelight supper, from designing the proper, embossed, mantelpiece-worthy invitations and planning appropriate seating arrangements to maintaining high standards in the quality of one's bathroom linen. Other topics concern ways to deal with tradesmen, the proper use of the telephone, how to maintain a healthy body and mind, one's role in organized religion and charity work, what books and art to appreciate for a proper cultural education, and the importance of wearing the correct hat. The book is filled with scores of photos from the BBC comedy as well as many references to the many tricky situations Hyacinth encounters-and conquers, of course-in the show. I am removing a star from the score because much of the book is made up of recaps of episodes that most KUA fans have seen many times; however, fans will enjoy the extras tidbits offered here, such as Hyacinth comparing her sisters' personalities to their flowery names, and what attracted her to Richard. There is even a photo of Sheridan (well, sort of).

This book is very well-written and beautifully-designed and not the rush job a lot of these television related books tend to be. There is even an index of topics in the back. Clive Swift (Richard) even remarked on how impressed he was in the book during the Peppermill interview with Patricia Routledge (available as an extra on the DVD "Living the Hyacinth Life"). A must for any fan and remember "keeping up appearances is not the most important thing in life, it is the only thing."

Editorial Review:

Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced "bouquet", of course), star of BBC1's "Keeping Up Appearances", imparts her personal views on protecting one's social standing. There are sections on etiquette in the home, entertaining, social obligations, how to strike up an acquaintance with members of the aristocracy, and improving the mind. They all give an insight into Hyacinth's philosophy of life, developed through years of candle-light suppers and charity sub-committee meetings.

Karen Salmenson has her finger on the pulse of what readers not only want but may need to read.

Enough, Dammit: A Cynic's Guide is a fun but meaningful read for people who need to get past the roadblocks of past experiences that programmed them for negativity and failure that they now impose on themselves.

I always think I like self-help books until I read one. This book however is just enough hudspah? to make it a worthwile read. I kept it in the bathroom and when in need of a little dose of reality and get up and go, i would open it up. It tells it like it is and with beautiful digital photos. This book is a great read and a great gift for anyone in a bit of a wallow.
