Oh, how I wish I had this in school! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I wore holes in piles of paper trying to work up to the basic points so magnificently outlined in this book! It's like having an art teacher with you (without the snide remarks) to bring your abilities to the top.

If you are planning on studying fashion, or just doing it for fun, you need this book.

Highly recommended!

Perfect for beginners 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is a great start for beginners who want to work in the fashion industry or for those who consider fashion designing a hobby and want to improve on their illustration skills, like myself. Burke starts with the basics, like learning how to draw the female figure in different poses and drawing some examples of clothes, but she also touches upon fabric rendering and ideas on how to make a presentation. There's even a section on designing for men, childeren, and costumes. Overall a very informative, clear and consise book to get started and to encourage and inspire amateurs to want to learn more.

I like what I see. 5 out of 5 stars.

I haven't really had a chance to play a lot with this book since I got it a month ago, but so far, I like it. There are very colorful designs, croquis', and many illustrations. It seems like it gives a lot of information in a short amount of time.

Ran Means Chaos 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Ran is Kurosawa's final masterpiece and my favorite Kurosawa movie. For me, Ran is more of an experience than a movie. It just seems so "real" to me. Directed when he was 75, the master director presents a cast of thousands and renders a mortal struggle of good and evil, fealty and betrayal, cruelty and kindness, & greed and generosity. An old man who has achieved power through war and treachery, deludes himself into giving up everything he has lived his entire life to accomplish to his ungrateful and ambitious sons. He is no victim. His final act of treachery is to betray himself. Kurosawa uses Shakespeare's King Lear as a loose foundation but combines elements of other Shakespare plays, noh and kabuki theater, and his own unique filmmaking. The result is a movie that is simultaneously familiar and wholly unique. Not Lear, not Shakespeare, not Japanese but completely Kurosawa.

Tatsuya Nakadai, who played the title character in Kagamusha so brilliantly, returns in another great performance as the king who unwisely divides his kingdom. The performances are uniformly excellent but Mieko Harada deserves special mention an evil, crafty Lady MacBeth type. The cinematography was done by longtime Kurosawa collaborator Asakazu Nakai. Ran was his last movie and the movie is beautifully shot as a magnificant epic. I don't usually mention film scores but the score composed by Toru Takemitsu could not be more perfectly suited to this movie. The final effect is that of a majestic, beautifully filmed, haunting, brilliant epic perfectly rendered by an expert cast and crew.

This profound and deeply satisfying film is one of the finest examples of the art of filmmaking in rendering a vision of life in the world. Profound, sweeping, exciting and tragic, Ran may not be Kurosawa's last movie butit is the perfect end to a brilliant career.

Editorial Review:

In this rare work of public disclosure, filmmaker David Lynch describes his personal methods of capturing and working with ideas, and the immense creative benefits he has experienced from the practice of meditation

Over the last four decades, David Lynch has created some of the best-known and widely discussed screen works of our time. This distinctive writer-director's art bears not only the mark of box-office success but also criticalacclaim and cultural posterity.

Yet Lynch generally reveals little of himself, or the ideas behind his work. Now he provides a rare window into his methods as an artist and his personal working style. In Catching the Big Fish, Lynch writes candidly about the tremendous creative benefits he has gained from his thirty-two-year commitment to practicing Transcendental Meditation.

In brief chapters, Lynch describes the experience of "diving within" and "catching" ideas like fish-and then preparing them for television or movie screens, and other mediums in which Lynch works, such as photography and painting.

In the book's first section, Lynch discusses the development of his ideas-where they come from, how he grasps them, and which ones appeal to him the most. He then shares his passion for "the doing"-whether moviemaking, painting, or other creative expressions. Lynch talks specifically about how he puts his thoughts into action and how he engages with others around him. Finally, he discusses the self and the surrounding world -and how the process of "diving within" that has so deeply affected his own work can directly benefit others.

Catching the Big Fish provides unprecedented insight into Lynch's methods, as it also offers a set of practical ideas that speak to matters of personal fulfillment, increased creativity, and greater harmony with one's surroundings.

The book comes as a revelation to the legion of fans who have longed to better understand Lynch's deeply personal vision. And it is equally intriguing to anyone who grapples with questions such as: "Where do ideas come from?" and "How can I nurture creativity?

Editorial Review:

The definitive book on animation, from the Academy Award-winning animator behind Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Animation is one of the hottest areas of filmmaking today--and the master animator who bridges the old generation and the new is Richard Williams. During his more than forty years in the business, Williams has been one of the true innovators, winning three Academy Awards and serving as the link between Disney's golden age of animation by hand and the new computer animation exemplified by Toy Story.

Perhaps even more important, though, has been his dedication in passing along his knowledge to a new generation of animators so that they in turn could push the medium in new directions. In this book, based on his sold-out master classes in the United States and across Europe, Williams provides the underlying principles of animation that every animator--from beginner to expert, classic animator to computer animation whiz --needs. Urging his readers to "invent but be believable," he illustrates his points with hundreds of drawings, distilling the secrets of the masters into a working system in order to create a book that will become the standard work on all forms of animation for professionals, students, and fans.

The "E" in Wall.E stands for Excellent 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The "Art of ---- " books that are published in connection with the release of (mostly) animated films have evolved over the years from expensive, large format, coffee table smashers to smaller (and thankfully less expensive) formats. However, the artwork between the covers of the latest generation of these books is no less lush. In the tradition of "Art of..." books, The Art of Wall.E documents the development of the characters and story line through a wealth of drawings that range from thumbnails to painstakingly executed paintings. It seems that in making these movies no possible detail is overlooked with the very talented folks at Pixar sweating even the smallest of them. If you enjoyed the movie, owning the book is a great way to enrich and prolong the experience.

Editorial Review:

Pixar Animation Studios, the innovators behind Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and Ratatouille, has again reinvented the genre with WALL E. When a robot searching for a connection finds EVE, a sleek female probe-droid from outer space, he embarks on an adventure-filled journey across the galaxy. Inspired by classic films, and a brave venture in its own right, WALL E is set to awe audiences this summer. The Art of WALL E includes more than 250 imaginative pieces of concept art, including storyboards, full-color pastels, digital and pencil sketches, character studies, color scripts, and more. The astute text—featuring quotes from the director, artists, animators, and production team—unearths the filmmakers' historical inspirations and reveals a studio confidently pushing the limits of animation.

Leading Couples: A brief glance backward at the great movie teams from Hollywood's golden era 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Leading Couples is the third volume in the series dealing with luminaries of Hollywood's glitzy past. The first two volumes Leading Men and Leading Women were well received. The books are written by Fred Miller working in conjunction with film historians from Turner Classic Movies. TCM is the cable channel which runs uncut films from all eras of film history from silents to recent films.
The Introduction to the book is by TCM host Robert Osborne. He is a famed film critic and has written a huge book on the Oscars.
And now let the show begin...Leading Couples examines in a few pages devoted to each couple such famous pairs as: Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers; Bogie and Bacall; Fay Wrang and King Kong; Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn; John Gilbert and Greta Garbo; Marie Dressler and Wallace Berry; Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney; Clark Gable and Jean Harlow and also Gable and Vivein Leigh; Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler and several more. Note that these are all male and female couples. Famous all male comedy teams such as Laurel and Hardy are not covered.
Each couple is covered in this book by:
a. A short essay on each couple and why they are important in film history and popular culture.
b. Behind the Scenes-short anecdotes and factoids on the couple.
c. Essential Team-Ups-The most important movies made together by the couple during their careers are listed and briefly reviewed.
d. Basic Facts on each of the partners: Date of Birth, Height, Place of Birth, Star Sign and Marriage Partners.
e. Key Quotes from their films.
f. Several glossy black and white photos are included on each couple.
The book also includes a listing of each person profiled posting every movie in which they appeared. John Wayne made more movies than anyone else in the book!
One complaint is the print is too small! Many of the people who will want to read this book are elderly and such small print could be a problem. This is a light and fun read. Nothing profound but informative!

Editorial Review:

William Powell and Myrna Loy. Bogart and Bacall. Tracy and Hepburn. These on-screen (and sometimes off-screen) couples defined romantic chemistry and the art of falling in love. From Turner Classic Movies Leading Couples features the most unforgettable screen pairings of the studio era including actors and actresses with many film courtships and those who made their indelible mark in a single memorable movie. Engaging and thoroughly researched each profile includes trivia behind-the-scenes stories biographical overviews and memorable quotes illustrated by rare stills and poster art.

A bombad mini-biography of Darth Vader 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The release of Star Wars books for young people has always been related to a theatrical promotion. In a world that has a seen all six films, a new wave of DK Readers is much appreciated. It gives us comfort that even though the movies are finished, the Star Wars experience isn't completely 'done.' As the title suggests, "The Story of Darth Vader" is a biography of Darth Vader. The first half of the book is spent on Anakin Skywalker. It looks at his life as a slave on Tatooine and his fateful meeting with Qui-Gon Jinn. Next, Anakin's apprenticeship with Obi-Wan Kenobi is explored. The Clone Wars would prove to be an important event for both the galaxy and young Skywalker. As expected, time is spent on Anakin's relationship to Padme Amidala and Chancellor Palpatine. Once Anakin turns to the dark side and becomes Darth Vader, his role in the new Empire is explained. A good deal of time is spent on Vader's relationship with his children. In particular, Luke Skywalker serves as being instrumental in Anakin's redemption. From the cradle to the grave, this book shows how a slave boy transformed into one of the most iconoclastic images of evil. Most pages include a text box that shares a tid-bit of related trivia. The scope includes the entire saga. The illustrations were lifted from all six films. While the pictures are high quality, the writing is also good. This new series has books for most levels of elementary readers. While most topics don't feature more than five sentences, the vocabulary runs high, so this title is best suited to readers on a fourth or fifth grade level. Those young readers who are ready for chapter books should pass this by altogether and make the plunge into "The Rise and Fall of Darth Vader." For those in that transitional zone between picture and chapter books, "The Story of Darth Vader" is a high interest read that offers an exciting biography of the galaxy's most feared villain.

Editorial Review:

More thrilling Star Wars episodes for young readers! Kids can continue their discovery of the fantastic Jedi knights, rogue rebels, heroic allies, and evil Sith lords that were loved by their parents' generation, while strengthening their reading skills at the same time.

Discover how a promising young Jedi turned to the Dark Side and became the most feared Sith lord in the galaxy.

Just one more map along the way (and not the best one out there). 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Based on content alone, I would have considered three stars; however, I have a hard time accepting *writing* advice from a book so badly written. I realize Mr. Vogler is a story analyst, not a writer. Still, the style here is atrocious, often to the point of distraction.

As he describes various films, he frequently jumbles his characters and his actors, creating a rambling, grammatically nightmarish style: "Recurring mentors include 'The Chief' on 'Get Smart', Will Geer and Ellen Corby as the grandparents on 'The Waltons', Alfred in 'Batman', James Earl Jones' CIA official in Patriot Games and The Hunt for Red October, etc." (For the record, I typed this sentence exactly as it appears in the book, other than my inability to italicize the Jack Ryan titles. Yes, those commas are found outside the quotation marks; yes, Mr. Jones's name is made plural possessive.) This utter disregard for parallelism can be found on nearly every page. In addition, Mr. Vogler refers to some characters only by their names ("In the film The Last of the Mohicans, Major Duncan Hayward is the rival of hero Nathaniel Poe..."); he refers to still others as only the names of the actors ("James Stewart forces Kim Novak to change her hair and clothing ..."). I was left with the feeling of a first draft, as if Mr. Vogler hadn't yet looked up the names he couldn't recall.

If you can overlook these stylistic eyesores (obviously, I have a difficult time doing so), you might find something useful in these pages. Or you might not. As demonstrated by the variety of reviews, this book's usefulness really depends on the reader.

Do you have an intermediate grasp of mythology and archetypes? You'll be bored by this. Have you read Joseph Campbell's _The Hero With A Thousand Faces_? You'll probably wonder why anyone bothered to publish this, because Mr. Vogler quotes and paraphrases Mr. Campbell to a worshipful degree. Do you write with characters in your mind first, and let them "tell you what to do" in terms of plot? You'll want to approach this book as a road you can wander from, not a roller coaster track you must stick to or die. Do you have some fully developed characters you'd love to explore, but struggle with plot? This book (as well as any study of archetypes) can help you find some signposts to guide your way. Are you entirely unschooled in archetypes and mythology but would like to learn? This book isn't the best starting place available, but I doubt it's the worst.

Before you start reading, examine your writing goals and your knowledge of archetypes to decide if this one is worthwhile for you. (Oh, and examine yourself for grammatical-OCD tendencies to decide if you can endure it.)

Editorial Review:

See why this book has become an international best seller and a true classic. The Writer's Journey explores the powerful relationship between mythology and storytelling in a clear, concise style that's made it required reading for movie executives, screenwriters, playwrights, scholars, and fans of pop culture all over the world. The updated and revised third edition provides new insights and observations from Vogler's ongoing work on mythology's influence on stories, movies, and man himself.

A COOL BLAST OF BOND 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

If I may wax nostalgic for a moment, I can still recall the very first James Bond movie that I sever saw...actually the first three Bond movies...it was sometime in the late 60's or early 70's and my mom took me and my brothers to the drive-in theater to see a triple feature of Goldfinger, Dr. No, and From Russia with Love...in that order. I know I never made it past the credits of From Russia with Love but man...I loved those first two films! I had never seen anything like Bond before with his cool gadgets and those nasty villains like Odd Job and that began a lifelong passion for James Bond. With Christmas approaching, I cannot think of a better gift for the Bond fan on your list than the James Bond Encyclopedia from DK Books.

I've read a lot of books from DK on popular films and while they are always very well done, they sometimes can be a bit light on material. No so with this book. This book contains over 300 pages filled with information that will test even the most knowledgeable of Bond fans. It is bountifully illustrated with over 2000 photographs and images and traces the Bond history right up to the most recent film, Casino Royale.

As the title suggests it is an encyclopedia but rather than just list its hundreds of entries in alphabetical order it lists them alphabetically by subject. The subjects include: The Bond Style, The Role of Bond, Bond Villains, Bond Women, Supporting Cast, Vehicles, Weapons & Equipment, and the Movies. A comprehensive index finishes things off.

The role of Bond covers the six actors who have portrayed Bond with two pages of biographical information on each actor and a list of the Bond films they starred in. Next up is the section on Bond Villains. This section covers Bond villains from the criminal masterminds Blofeld, Hugo Drax, and Goldfinger; crime lords like Frank Sanchez; muscled thugs Jaws, Odd Job, Mr. Kil, and Tee Hee; and dangerous females May Day, Elekta King, and Bambi & Thumper. The encyclopedia gives the film(s) they appeared in, their current status, characteristics, the actor who portrayed them, and a synopsis of their roles in the films.

No book on Bond would be complete without looking at the dozens of Bond Women played by some of the most beautiful actresses in the world: Terri Hatcher, Ursula Andress, Lana Wood, Eva Green, and Halle Berry. The section on supporting cast members covers all the other major and minor characters in the Bond films from Q to Miss Moneypenny. Each Aston Martin that Bond drove is featured in the section on vehicles along with some of the more extraordinary vehicles like the Bath-O-Sub from Diamonds are Forever and the Dragon Tank from Dr. No. And of course all of Bonds secret weapons and gadgets are detailed in the Weapons section.

The last fifty pages or so of the book covers each bond film in chronological order with a listing of cast and crew credits but rather than provide a synopsis of films you've probably seen numerous times the book instead provides anecdotes on the making of the films with all manner of interesting production notes.

This is a book that is perfect for the die-hard or casual James Bond fan.

Editorial Review:

Created in full collaboration with Eon Productions, producers of the Bond movies, this illustrated celebration of the world's most famous super-spy examines every aspect of 007's world, with information on his history, style, and tastes, along with A-Z guides to his adversaries, allies, gadgets, cars, and, of course, the ever-glamorous Bond girls. AUTHOR BIO: John Cork and Colin Stutz authorities on every aspect of the James Bond story, wrote the acclaimed book on the James Bond phenomenon, James Bond: The Legacy, have produced, written and directed 30 special feature documentaries for MGM's DVD releases of James Bond films, and contributed to The Ultimate James Bond: An Interactive Dossier CD-Rom for MGM Interactive.
