Editorial Review:

From Rin Tin Tin to Casablanca to Harry Potter, the Warner Bros. story is the history of Hollywood. Eighty-five years of screen icons, legendary films, and history-making achievements are detailed in this comprehensive, photo-filled treasure trove, fully authorized by the studio.

No production company has had more legendary films, stars, or influence on the course of Hollywood than Warner Bros. Among the superstars who worked for the studio are Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Joan Crawford, Marlon Brando, James Dean, and John Wayne. Filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick made history for the studio, and it has been home to blockbuster franchises like Superman, Batman, Lethal Weapon, and Harry Potter.

Produced in conjunction with Warner Bros., this volume is the ultimate guide to the greatest movie studio in history. You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros. Story is also the companion to a five part documentary in the PBS American Masters series by author Richard Schickel that will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in the spring of 2008 and debut on PBS in the fall, to coincide with publication of the book.

Screen Writer's Friend 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The Hollywood Creative Directory is a very handy book for anyone who has completed a screenplay and wants to try and sell it to a production company. As a working screen writer, screenwriting instructor and story analyst for production companies, I know how confusing it can be for writers who wish to market and sell their finished screenplays.
The Hollywood Creative Directory saves a lot of time researching producers who may be interested in your screenplay. Most listings in the book give an idea of what kind of films the production company makes, what they are looking for and what form of submission they prefer.
Purchasing the book on Amazon does save you quite a bit of money and headache ( tried Buy[...] , receive damaged books and a hard time getting replacements, will never use them again).
The Hollywood Creative Directory isn't for the casual writer dabbling in screenplay writing, but if you are serious about selling you completed screenplay then this may be an important part of your marketing plan.

Editorial Review:

The Hollywood Creative Directory is the authoritative, easy-to-use source for finding entertainment professionals. It’s like a gigantic Hollywood phone book, packed with names, numbers, addresses, and current titles of executives from film and television. Studios, production companies, television networks, and cable channels are listed with their preferred genres, selected credits, projects in development, and deals. A separate section contains the network, primetime, and major cable TV shows currently in production, along with staff and contact information. Comprehensive and up-to-the-minute (it’s published three times a year), the directory is used by studios, directors, producers, writers, actors, aspiring filmmakers, students, college and university libraries, researchers--everyone who wants to make it in Hollywood. Let Hollywood Creative Directory be your guide to getting your foot in the door!

A "Must Read" for Every Screenwriter 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: From the Secret Files of Harry Pennypacker
Shadow Watcher
Nobody Drowns in Mineral Lake

This is perhaps the best book about screenwriting and the film business ever written.

Oscar winner William Goldman, who wrote such classic films as HARPER, BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID, MARATHON MAN and ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN shares his unique, often difficult, experiences working with top directors, producers and stars like Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman and Laurence Olivier.

If survival in the Hollywood film industry is possible, then there is no better "survival guide" than this book, because Goldman tells it like it is. He pulls no punches.

According to Goldman, the single most important fact in the movie industry is that "Nobody Knows Anything".

Most of the book's second-half is a primer on how to write a successful screenplay.

What does Goldman feel is the most important lesson to be learned about writing for films?

1. "Screenplays Are Structure"
2. You protect the "spine" of that structure "to the death".

If you want to work (and succeed) in Hollywood, then this is a book that you must carry around with you...like a Bible.

Editorial Review:

As befits more than twenty years in Hollywood, Oscar-winning screenwriter William Goldman's sparkling memoir is as entertaining as many of the films he has helped to create. From the writer of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President's Men and Marathon Man, Adventures in the Screen Trade is an intimate view of movie-making, of acting greats such as Redford, Olivier, Newman and Hoffman, and of the trials and rewards of working inside the most exciting business in the world.

The Granddaddy of Hollywood Scandal Books 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: From the Secret Files of Harry Pennypacker
Shadow Watcher
Nobody Drowns in Mineral Lake

This is the granddaddy of books dealing with Hollywood's dark side.

Drawing as much from gossip as he does from known facts, author Kenneth Anger dishes all the "inside dope" about the glamourous stars of Hollywood's Golden Age.

From the Fatty Arbuckle murder trial to the Lana Turner/Johnny Stompanato affair, no scandal is left out of this book that continually pushes the envelope to the very edge and, possibly, over it.

For example, there's one drawing in the book of Cary Grant (circa 1930s) that bears the caption, "Who's a fairy?"

There are also some very unflattering photos of stars without clothes or make-up, being arrested and even dead.

If you are looking for something "in good taste," this book is definitely not for you.

On the other hand, if you're looking for an entertaining diversion, then HOLLYWOOD BABYLON might just be it. Just don't believe everything you read.

A Great Book to get started 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I am an entertainment buff and I thought this book was great for people who want a survey of jobs they can pursue. It gave an in depth look at a lot of the positions in the film business. If you want a general look at the possible jobs, get this book. If you are more interested in television, this book is a great start, but it doesn't say anything about that since its primarly about film so look for another book for further reading. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to break into the business, it was really helpful for me.

Editorial Review:

Looking for a career in the film business? Look no further.

Making it in Hollywood is possible. But only if you have a workable strategy. When author Frederick Levy launched his own fledgling career, he didnt' know a soul in the business. But that didn't stop him and it doesn't have to stop you. Hollywood 101 is a complete game plan for getting your foot in the door of the film industry. With fascinating inside stories and advice from key players, it takes you step-by-step up the ladder of success. Whether you aspire to be a producer, director, writer, talent agent, and any other behind-the-camera professional, this is the one book you need to turn your "reel" dreams into reality!

For those serious about producing 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Good basic legal information oriented towards the independent feature film producer but useful for anyone who wants to produce film or other distributed video. Won't replace having an attorney but will allow you to do some things by yourself and understand what is going on when you need to hire one. Similar to "The Independent Film Producer's Survival Guide" but with enough distinct material (example contracts for instance) to be worth having both.

Editorial Review:

This invaluable collection of sample entertainment contracts and discussions of the terms and concepts contained therein has been expanded in this second edition by the addition of twenty new contracts, bringing the total number of contracts to sixty. Includes contracts covering: depiction -- release, option, purchase; literary submission and sale -- release, option, purchase; artist employment -- writer, director, actor; Collaboration -- writer, joint venture, co-production; music -- television rights license, soundtrack, composer; financing -- finder, limited prospectus; production -- line producer, casting director, crew, services, location; distribution -- theatrical, merchandising -- product release, license; retainer -- agent, attorney; and much more.

Editorial Review:

Art Linson's riotous journey through the making of five major motion pictures.

Whether he's trying to persuade an executive that Gwyneth Paltrow has enough chin to carry the lead in a movie, forcing an enraged Alec Baldwin to shave off his mountain-man beard, or sitting through an excruciating reading of a David Mamet script as Bob de Niro toys with the notion of heading up the cast, Art Linson gives us a brutally honest, funny, and comprehensive tour through the horrors of Hollywood, from script to screen.

In What Just Happened? we get to explore, at close range, finicky directors, clueless executives, shameless marketers, famous actors, battered screenwriters, and hapless producers crossing paths in such calamitous ways that it's a miracle these films get made at all. Linson is the ideal guide through this heavily land-mined, high-stakes industry, pausing for a moment here or there to explain some aspect or pitfall of the business, to wax nostalgic about film days past, or to serve up a compelling inside Hollywood tale of woe. Whether you love the movies or not, you won't be able to resist the stories behind them.

Editorial Review:

When the low-budget biker movie Easy Rider shocked Hollywood with its success in 1969, a new Hollywood era was born. This was an age when talented young filmmakers such as Scorsese, Coppola, and Spielberg, along with a new breed of actors, including De Niro, Pacino, and Nicholson, became the powerful figures who would make such modern classics as The Godfather, Chinatown, Taxi Driver, and Jaws. Easy Riders, Raging Bulls follows the wild ride that was Hollywood in the '70s -- an unabashed celebration of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll (both onscreen and off) and a climate where innovation and experimentation reigned supreme. Based on hundreds of interviews with the directors themselves, producers, stars, agents, writers, studio executives, spouses, and ex-spouses, this is the full, candid story of Hollywood's last golden age.

MARTIN SCORSESE ON DRUGS: "I did a lot of drugs because I wanted to do a lot, I wanted to push all the way to the very very end, and see if I could die."

DENNIS HOPPER ON EASY RIDER: "The cocaine problem in the United States is really because of me. There was no cocaine before Easy Rider on the street. After Easy Rider, it was everywhere."

GEORGE LUCAS ON STAR WARS: "Popcorn pictures have always ruled. Why do people go see them? Why is the public so stupid? That's not my fault."
