Mr. Schulz, you invented nothing. This wheel was originally published at least 60 years ago, and probably invented well before that. In music, we all stand on the shoulders of our forebears.

The Chord Wheel 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I bought chord wheel a couple years ago and could not figure the thing out to little explanation and I play piano hoping to help me play by ear better. No luck it sits in the bottom of all my music. I am trying one of the other music books right now.

Editorial Review:

Master chord theory ... in minutes! The Chord Wheel is a revolutionary device that puts the most essential and practical applications of chord theory into your hands. Musical yes, earliest no. 4 out of 5 stars.

My 4 yr. old daughter is enrolled in a Yamaha music school class for 4-5 yr. olds. I bought this book to give us some supplementary songs to practice. The songs in this book are extremely musical and enjoyable; I would have given the book 5 stars except for the use of the superlative "earliest" in the title, as the pace and level of the book is much faster and higher than what she gets from the music school (which I believe is generally what Yamaha has discovered over many years is readily doable for the youngest beginners). This book is actually nice for an adult beginner.

Easy to use 5 out of 5 stars.

My 7 year old has enjoyed learning piano w/ this book. I don't play but I've been able to "teach" her with it. This is great for beginners.

good 5 out of 5 stars.

I've taught out of this to some of my piano students and it works out nicely.

Editorial Review:

A series for the early beginner combining rote and note approach. The melodies are written with careful thought and are kept as simple as possible, yet they are refreshingly delightful. All the music lies within the grasp of the child's small hands.

This book is pretty good. It has a lot of music and teaches you a lot about the instrument. It doesn't have all that many contemporary tunes, but it's got loads of classics. Worth the cost!

The BEST way to learn guitar 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Valerie Bertinelli, then: bubbly sitcom star and America's Sweetheart turned tabloid headline and rock star wife. Now: actress, single working mother of teenage rock star, and weight-loss inspiration to millions.

We all knew and loved Valerie Bertinelli years ago when she was girl-next-door cutie Barbara Cooper in the hit TV show One Day at a Time, and more recently when she starred in numerous TV movies and co-starred in Touched by an Angel. From wholesome prime time in America's living rooms, Valerie moved to late nights with the hardest-partying band of the decadent eighties when she became, at twenty, wife to rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen. Losing It is Valerie's frank account of her life backstage and in the spotlight: the ups and downs of teen stardom, her complicated marriage to a brilliant, tormented musical genius, the joys of motherhood, and her very public struggle with her weight.

Surprising, uplifting, and empowering, Losing It chronicles Valerie's journey as she finds new love, raises a terrific kid, and motivates other women to take back their lives.

Awesome Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I just picked this up today and I can't seem to put it down. If your a fan of Cobain and or Nirvana I recommend buying this. It is packed full of very nice pictures and tons of other things.

Editorial Review:

An unparalleled look inside the brilliant mind of one of America's most revered rock legends, Cobain Unseen collects previously unseen artifacts and photographs from the estate's archives to form a fascinating portrait of the creativity, madness, and genius of Kurt Cobain.
Personal items and photographs take readers deeper inside Cobain's life than they've ever been before, and interactive features, such as Kurt's handwritten sticker-sheet of Nirvana name tags, facsimiles of unseen journal pages, and gatefolds of his graffiti-embellished guitars make this an essential keepsake. An audio CD showcasing spoken-word material by Cobain, some of it never before released, will be included. Accompanying the previously unpublished images and memorabilia is a compelling biographical narrative by New York Times-bestselling author Charles R. Cross.

One of Boynton's real winners 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This one is great for babies and toddlers, and even slightly older kids can get into it. It's one of the ones I really wish existed as a non-board book!

The illustrations are cute, the text is simple and catchy - what more do you want?

PERFECTION! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

There is no greater compliment than when a child tries to recite the book BACK to the parents. Boynton has accomplished that with "Barnyard Dance!" Our oldest daughter, who is three, has Developmental Apraxia of Speech. Words do not come easily for her. BUT she adores this book and tries to "read" it to us all the time. Guaranteed to please your little one, I promise.

A must have for toddlers! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the cutest books ever written for little ones! Great quality for tiny teeth and fingers! It's so eye-catching and colorful, they all LOVE this one!

Great rhythmic baby book. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you read this book naturally, the inherent rhythms of the text turn it into a little song unto itself. You can tap your foot to it. Our baby girl dances to the *words* alone.

Get this book. It's brilliant.

Editorial Review:

Now in paperback, the New York Times bestseller by one of rock’s most provocative figures

Scar Tissue is Anthony Kiedis’s searingly honest memoir of a life spent in the fast lane. In 1983, four self-described "knuckleheads" burst out of the mosh-pitted mosaic of the neo-punk rock scene in L.A. with their own unique brand of cosmic hardcore mayhem funk. Over twenty years later, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, against all odds, have become one of the most successful bands in the world. Though the band has gone through many incarnations, Anthony Kiedis, the group’s lyricist and dynamic lead singer, has been there for the whole roller-coaster ride.

Whether he’s recollecting the influence of the beautiful, strong women who have been his muses, or retracing a journey that has included appearances as diverse as a performance before half a million people at Woodstock or an audience of one at the humble compound of the exiled Dalai Lama, Kiedis shares a compelling story about the price of success and excess. Scar Tissue is a story of dedication and debauchery, of intrigue and integrity, of recklessness and redemption -- a story that could only have come out of the world of rock.

Excellent systematic method for learning the fretboard 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have been fascinated by the guitar for over 20 years. As such, I have built up a large library of lessons in various forms. This workbook has pulled many concepts that I have found in disparate sources and coalesced them into one place. My only slight criticism is that the basic music theory involved with learning the fretboard is not in as much depth as I would like. Consequently, I understand some of the confusion noted in other reviews. I encourage beginners to stick with it because being able to break free of the tyranny of the first position will inspire you to further heights no matter what musical style you play. My recommendation for more in-depth music theory for guitar would be the Guitar Grimoire series by Adam Kadmon. Example: The Guitar Grimoire- A Notated Intervallic Study Of Scales

Editorial Review:

Navigate the guitar neck better than ever before with this easy-to-use book! Designed from Musicians Institute core curriculum programs, it covers essential concepts for players of every level, acoustic or electric. A hands-on guide to theory, it will help you learn to build any scale or chord on your own and unleash creativity. No music reading is required.

Where are the editors? 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The public is hungry to know more about these 3 fantastic women. I think this book made the best selling charts on the strength of its subjects. A better book would have been #1 and a fantastic book would have stayed there a long time. This book is a missed opportunity.

It's not that Sheila Weller hasn't done any homework. She's digested every lyric and has assembled a considerable amount of information. Unfortunately, the meat is dwarfed by gossip, name dropping, trivia (did you know that Carole King and Hettie Jones both raised young children in walk up apartments not far from each other?) and hyperbole.

The biggest strength of the author is how she interprets the lyrics that inspired many. She brings them to life in describing the each of authors' lives at the time the words were written. Another strength is the respect and understanding she gives to each woman.

It is the lack of discipline in the text and the hit or miss research that caused my 2 star assessment. The book shows the research method suggested in a footnote on p. 433 which references an unanswered email to Sue Mingus (widow of Charles) asking about Joni do you "regard each other as day for night opposites or sisters in spirit?" (What is being sought here?) On page 407 in an apparently answered email regarding an incident with Jackson Browne someone says "this is the first time a man ever hit Joni". (Of the implied second or third time, where is the follow up?)

There is a lot of fanzine style jargon and overly long sentences laiden with real and stylized adjectives. As you go through the book, the hyperbole diminishes, but it never goes away. It is most absent in the parts about Carole's second marriage and Carly's son's operation making them two of the best parts.

The lifestyles described are modest for millionares of this period. Have they been screwed on their record deals or have they squandered the money they should have been making? The only clue that one of these women might be fabulously wealthy is Carole King saying each divorce costs her a million dollars. Financial success is a considerable element in each of these lives and should have been covered.

The book presents but does not develop these women as generational pioneers, not just in their music, but in their asymmetrical romantic relationships. Each of them had to hide their talent when it out shown their partners' and each of them suffered because their talent could not be hidden.

I believe the affection some have for this book is a reflection of the affection for the women profiled. The idea of putting these three breakthrough songwriters (despite their disparate genres) together was ambitious, but is a good one. The author clearly understands the artists, the female-restricting environment from which they rose and their art. She's obviously willing to do the work, but seems to need direction. A good editor or editing team could have made this a top flight book.

Editorial Review:

Girls Like Us is an epic treatment of Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Carly Simon, midcentury women who dared to break tradition and become what none had been before them---confessors in song, rock superstars, and adventurers of heart and soul.

Editorial Review:

An intimate exploration into the musical genius of fifteen living jazz legends, from the longtime New York Times jazz critic

Jazz is conducted almost wordlessly: John Coltrane rarely told his quartet what to do, and Miles Davis famously gave his group only the barest instructions before recording his masterpiece “Kind of Blue.” Musicians are often loath to discuss their craft for fear of destroying its improvisational essence, rendering jazz among the most ephemeral and least transparent of the performing arts.

In The Jazz Ear, the acclaimed music critic Ben Ratliff sits down with jazz greats to discuss recordings by the musicians who most influenced them. In the process, he skillfully coaxes out a profound understanding of the men and women themselves, the context of their work, and how jazz—from horn blare to drum riff—is created conceptually. Expanding on his popular interviews for The New York Times, Ratliff speaks with Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Branford Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Wayne Shorter, Joshua Redman, and others about the subtle variations in generation, training, and attitude that define their music.

Playful and keenly insightful, The Jazz Ear is a revelatory exploration of a unique way of making and hearing music.
