Perfect for caroling 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I bought 30 copies of this book several years ago and they are now a regular part of our Christmas holiday. They have carolled around many neighborhoods. Great for groups caroling or just singing around the piano. It has lyrics only (alas), but for the price, this little 64-page book can be indispensable if you're putting a group sing together.

Solid Christmas source 4 out of 5 stars.

Christmas carols are among the oldest of holiday traditions, stretching back centuries with songs about celebrations, Christ's birth, and cold snowy nights. Dover Thrift's "Christmas Carols: Complete Verses" is a solid resource for anyone who can't remember that second verse of "Angels We Have Heard On High."

Shane Weller collects many traditional Christmas carols, both secular ("Jingle Bells") and religious ("Joy To the World"). He includes old favorites like "The Twelve Days of Christmas," which is almost impossible to remember every verse of, the bouncy "We Wish You A Merry Christmas," and the solemn balladic "Silent Night."

However, Weller doesn't just stick to well-known favorites. He also dips into a large store of lesser-known carols such as "Good King Wenceslas" -- sure, people know the first first four or five lines, but what comes after that? Anyway, the lesser-known, richly traditional carols include the lullaby-like "Coventry Carol," the enchanting part-Latin "The Snow Lay on the Ground," and the enchanting "Wassail Song."

The real gems of this collection are, in fact, the much older traditional carols -- they can be just as catchy as the more recent ones ("Here we come a-wassailing/Among the leaves so green,/Here we come a wand'ring,/So fair to be seen"). And not all of the most recent ones as well known, such as Christina Rossetti's "In the Bleak Midwinter," a carol/poem she wrote for a newspaper.

While the book is of the cheap quality -- rather slimy paper and cover -- needed to keep the price affordable, a few flourishes are given to it, like cute little holly decorations over the songs. The songs are arranged alphabetically, which is either good or bad -- good for finding them quickly, bad for singing all in order.

"Christmas Carols: Complete Verses" is a surprisingly good selection of carols, old and new, well-known and obscure. What they all have in common is a rich holiday atmosphere. Definitely worth getting.

Editorial Review:

A caroler's delight: complete lyrics for over 50 of the most popular and beloved Christmas songs: Away in a Manger, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Joy to the World, O Come, All Ye Faithful, O Holy Night, Silent Night, The Twelve Days of Christmas, and many more. The perfect companion for the holiday season.

If you want to play Laurie Berkner songs to your kids or get a book where they can learn them for piano or guitar, this is it! It's a VERY nice songbook that includes 25 of her easy-to-play favorites. I especially like that it includes strumming patterns for guitar. There are activities, too, but I don't really use those. But I could see how classrooms might. Also included in this book is an "instrumental sing-along backing CD" with karaoke versions of several songs.

Sheet music included:
1. Bottle Caps
2. Bumblebee (Buzz Buzz)
3. Choc-o-lot In My Pock-o-lot
4. Clean It Up
5. Drive My Car
6. Goodnight
7. I Know A Chicken
8. I Really Love To Dance
9. I'm Gonna Catch You
10. I'm Not Perfect
11. Mahalo
12. Moon Moon Moon
13. My Energy
14. O Susannah
15. Pig on Her Head
16. Rocketship Run
17. Sneaks
18. Song In My Tummy
19. This Hat
20. Trucks
21. Under a Shady Tree
22. Victor Vito
23. Walk Along The River
24. We Are The Dinosaurs
25. What Falls In The Fall?

Songs on the Sing-Along CD:
1. Bumblebee (Buzz Buzz)
2. I'm Gonna Catch You
3. Sneaks
4. Trucks
5. Victor Vito
6. We Are The Dinosaurs
7. What Falls In The Fall?

PS I haven't seen it any cheaper anywhere than here at Amazon and through Amazon resellers (that's where I got mine).

Love this Book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

We turned this beautiful rendition of the twelve days of Christmas into our Childrens Christmas program. It adapted easily to the stage. We made the costumes for 50+ children, and had them build the scene as they sang Pingry's song. The story is beautiful and heartwarming, and puts a reverent emphasis on Christmas that all chldren can relate to; from 2 to 12 years of age.

Such Fun! 5 out of 5 stars.

My toddler class absolutely loved this book! I found myself reading it over and over and over to them. They loved the rhythm..they'd even get up and dance while I sang it to them (because hey! you just have to sing it!) I may need to buy a new copy for next Christmas..this one is almost worn out!

Editorial Review:

This new version of an old favorite celebrates the true reason for the season. On each of the twelve days of Christmas, a mother shows to her child additonal pieces of the Nativity scene: one baby Jesus, two smiling parents, three Wise Men giving...until the stable is filled and a mother's love is revealed. This board book is perfect for seasonal gifts for young children who will treasure this Christmas rhyme with fun words and soft watercolor illustrations.

I like it so much that I like to play it again. My favourite song in this book is 'Haydn's Symphony'.
I like it so much it's my music book ofcourse. I like all the animals best because they learn me music so much. I can't even kiss them because they are in my music book. Mummy might get me the animals for christmas!

Great for 3 - 4 year olds 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great 'teach it to your child yourself' book even if you're not a pianist. As a piano teacher, I recommend it to parents/aunts/uncles/grandparents who want to expose a young child to playing the piano or keyboard. The story of Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear makes the lessons even more interesting - keeps the student's attention longer.

Great for very young students 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book and also the workbook and discovery book for my niece who is four years old. I am a piano teacher, and normally tell parents to wait until their child is at least in kindergarden before beggining piano lessons, but my sister-in-law begged me to start her daughter earlier. I was already teaching her older sister, so I thought I would give this mehtod a try. The lessons proceed very slowly, and are very basic, perfect for a four year old with a short attention span. The lesson book moves at a slow pace introducing basic concepts such as steady beat, higher/lower, finger numbers, quarter note rhythms and rests through whole notes and rests, measuers, times signatures, groupings of black keys, and white notes one at a time. There are duet parts for the teacher to play with every student lesson. Each lesson begins with a continuation of a story begun on page one. One concept is introduced at a time. There are coloring activities in the lesson book as well as in the workbook to reinforce the concepts. The discovery book has songs for the teacher to play, while the student performs movements which reinforce concepts from the lesson. The book moves a slow pace while keeping the student interested and learning. I am very impressed with this method and have ordered level 2 for my neice who is about to complete level 1.

Classic Children's Tunes 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Reader's Digest Children Songbook is a good book to have on hand for anyone with young children. Since my girls love their tunes, I picked up this songbook for them. They cannot read, of course, so they have no interest in looking through the pages. Each of the songs does include a drawing at the top, complete with animals and other figures, and kids do like these pictures, but the majority of the pages in this book are sheet music, so there are limits to what kids can do. This book is intended, of course, as an adult song guide: A reference to 130 classic children's tunes that kids have been enjoying for generations. From the Muppet Show Theme to Happy Birthday, this book contains many children favorites.

One surprise with this book is the background information on each song. There are facts about the songs, like the composer and any popular recordings, along with trivial facts for some of the tunes. I like this part of the book for its educational value. Children won't care about this at all- it's the adults in the household who will enjoy reading these tidbits of music trivia.

The songs included in this book are very good and there is a wide enough variety that all children will find something they like. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the included CD. My main complaint with the CD is that it includes only 12 songs. When I first purchased this book, I wasn't paying close attention and didn't realize the CD had only twelve tunes. Of course, I wasn't expecting all 130 songs to appear on a single CD. But I certainly expected more than 12. Also, the singing isn't the greatest on all the songs. There are several that I skip each time I play the CD to my girls, mainly because I get irritated with the horrendous singing. Even my little girls seem to like some tunes more than others, and it seems like the vocals are the main reason they don't prefer some of the songs.

Overall, Reader's Digest Children Songbook is a good book to have in the house. Many adults already know the lyrics to some of these songs by heart, but it is still nice to have a book like this for looking up less popular songs and for having the sheet music so pianists and guitarists know how to play the songs on their instruments. The CD is a disappointment, but the songbook itself is worth the expenditure and I recommend it to anyone who has youngsters in the house.

Editorial Review:

First published in 1985, this Reader's Digest best-selling classic has sold over 200,000 copies. Carryon or start your own tradition as adults and children gather to sing from this collection of easy-to-play children's favorite songs-from movies, shows, nursery rhymes, holiday songs, folksongs, nonsense songs, and more. This collection is great for all ages, familiar songs that children love to sing, and a must have for parents, grandparents, and teachers-including musical games and activity ideas to add to the fun. The 252-page easy-to-read music book with more than 130 all-time favorite family songs is spiral-bound to lie flat, and includes a 40-page lyric book. And bring these favorite melodies to life by listening to the recordings on the companion CD.

Makes piano lessons fun! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The workbook is a must when teaching from the lesson book. The workbook follows the lesson book Music for Little Mozarts: A Piano Course to Bring Out the Music in Every Young Child (Music for Little Mozarts)and includes coloring and and exercises to reinforce what your child learned in the lesson book.

I gave it 4 stars because once you use it, you can't reuse it for another student.

I used this book to get ideas for my lessons 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This workbook contains 45 worksheets that can be completed by a 3-5 year old in 1-5 minutes. The suggested pacing is 20 piano lessons. The concepts range from "curve your fingers", high and low, forte/piano, quarter/half/whole rests, quarter notes, repeat signs, to the notes A,B,C,D, and E They compliment the little mozarts core curriculum contained in the "music lesson" book.

The value in this workbook according to me is that in order for such a young child to internalize these concepts you need to think of at least three different learning methods to teach each concept, the coloring/tracing in this book accomplishes one modality (writing/kinesthetic). The pages won't challenge an artistic child, but you don't want them to color all day long during lessons anyway. I personally will not be using most of the worksheets, but each page gave me an idea for a game I could use instead (the worksheets were colorful and appealing for a child, but I think games are better and you can reuse them unlike the workbook). I appreciated having this book to give me ideas for my lessons, it saves me time. Older kids don't require so much "learn through games" as 3-5 year olds, so this program is helpful for meeting the needs of the youngest students.

Editorial Review:

Book & CD. Lynn Kleiner presents her creative ideas and stories for movement and percussion-playing as she delights preschool through primary-age children with orchestral favorites. The CD contains 25 tracks including "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson; "Hungarian Dance No. 6" by Brahms; "The Wild Horseman" by Schumann; selections from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker Suite," Bizet's "Carmen," and Saint Saens' "Carnival of the Animals"; the Largo from Dvorak's "New World"; Adagio from Brahms' Symphony No. 1; Theme and Variations from Haydn's "Surprise Symphony." There are selections for marching, dancing, trotting, skipping, jumping, hiding, sleeping, playing instruments, entering class, and saying goodbye. Lots of fun, this book and CD will allow teachers to capture childrens' interest in orchestral music for a lifetime.
