Editorial Review:

Wicked is not just a musical, it is a phenomenon. Every week 15,000 people pack New York+s Gershwin Theatre to see the show. The most successful musical on Broadway in 2004, Wicked is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire. It tells the story of Elphaba, the headstrong Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the good witch, growing up in the Land of Oz. The show has cast a spell on fans, many of whom return for second and third viewings. In 2005, the show begins an extensive tour across the United States and Canada, hitting major cities such as Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and many more. This beautifully packaged, whimsical keepsake is designed to resemble the Grimmerie, an ancient book of spells that Elphaba uses in the show. Wicked: The Grimmerie offers fans a behind-the-curtains peek at the musical, profiles of the cast and creative team, and inside stories, with full-color photographs throughout. Some of the irresistible special features include an -Ozian+ glossary, spells, an illustrated family tree, and a step-by-step look at how Elphaba gets green before each show-everything fans need to relive the Broadway experience day after day.

Phenominal score 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Wicked is fabulous on every level. Just know that this score is not easy to play from if you are not a good piano player. Also as voice teacher, prepare yourself for a lot of students who will not be able to even touch the high belt required for some of these songs!

Check Out: Vocalize!

Editorial Review:

Nominated for a whopping 10 Tony Awards and grossing more than $1 million each week, Wicked is this year's Broadway smash! A prequel to the all-American classic The Wizard of Oz, this new musical is a character study of Elphaba and Glinda, school roommates who grow up to become the Wicked Witch and the Good Witch, respectively. Feature a special section of color photos from the production, a note from composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz, and these fantastic tunes: As Long as You're Mine ? Dancing Through Life ? Defying Gravity ? For Good ? I Couldn't Be Happier ? I'm Not That Girl ? No Good Deed ? No One Mourns the Wicked ? One Short Day ? Popular ? What Is This Feeling? ? The Wizard and I ? Wonderful.

Updated Version of Great Book 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Whenever I encounter a new version of a book, my primary concern is "what has changed?" Included in the hardcover, but not seen in this edition were "A Connecticut Yankee," "Destry Rides Again," "Dubarry was a Lady," "George White's Scandals...," "Full Monty," and "Les Miserables." Included in this paperback version (not in the hardcover) are "Avenue Q," "Drowsy Chaperone," "Grease," "Grey Gardens," "Sunday in the Park with George," and "Wicked." Having seen each of these musicals, I cannot believe that anyone of an educated opinion finds "Grease" to be more artistically significant than "Les Miserables." Further, while "Grey Gardens" featured one sensational performance, it was far from a peak achievement as a musical. I find the need to own both editions. People who don't may prefer this more conveniently sized paperback with its updated photos and inclusion of more recent popular Broadway artists.

Editorial Review:

Finally in paperback, this info-and photo-packed celebration of Broadway has been thoroughly updated to include new shows, new features, and new comments from Broadway's celebrated leading ladies.

The rich history of Broadway—from the beloved classics of each decade to the most popular recent hits—are showcased here in colorful chapters that include authoritative commentary, features on the creators and performers, and more. The list of the 101 best has been reevaluated by the authors for this edition, and new shows include Avenue Q, The Drowsy Chaperone, Grease, Grey Gardens, Sunday in the Park with George, and Wicked.

Not suitable for young children 2 out of 5 stars.
62 of 71 people found this review helpful.

My daughter loves the Nutcracker ballet and I thought it would be good for her to know the full story behind it (I had never heard it myself). The previous reviews and comments on the beautiful illustrations led me to believe this would be a great choice for my 5 year old daughter.

The illustrations are very similar in style to those in Where the Wild Things Are. If you don't like that book, you won't like the illustrations in this one. Also be aware that this is NOT a picture book. There is a very high ratio of text to illustrations.
I also feel the text is inappropriate for young children. The actual story is very dark and the language, while beautiful, is above the vocabulary and experience of most young children. ( "These intrepid and magnificently uniformed troops, consisting of gardeners, Tyroleans, Tunguses, barbers, harlequins, cupids, lions, and tigers, and monkeys, fought with coolness, courage, and perseverance. With their Spartan bravery, this elite regiment would have wrested the victory from the enemy, had not a daring mouse captain leaped into the fray and bitten the head off one of the Chinese emperors, who in falling crushed two Tunguses and a monkey." p32)

I WOULD recommend this book for older children.

Editorial Review:

"A classic, new and complete. One of the ten best illustrated children's books of the year."
-- New York Times Book Review

The tale of Nutcracker, written by E.T.A. Hoffmann in 1816, has fascinated and inspired artists, composers, and audiences for almost two hundred years. It has retained its freshness because it appeals to the sense of wonder we all share.

Maurice Sendak designed brilliant sets and costumes for the Pacific Northwest Ballet's Christmas production of Nutcracker and created even more magnificent pictures especially for this book. He joined with the eminent translator Ralph Manheim to produce this illustrated edition of Hoffmann's wonderful tale, destined to become a classic for all ages.

The world of Nutcracker is a world of pleasures. Maurice Sendak's art illuminates the delights of Hoffmann's story in this rich and tantalizing treasure.

Pride and Prejudice Sheet Music Advanced 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This version of the sheet music is more advanced than an earlier version that I purchased. It is clearly more difficult to play, but not so difficult that with a little work it can't be accomplished. And the results are worth it .... more harmonically rich and interesting.

Great for learning 5 out of 5 stars.

Every pianist should learn these timeless, fantastic scores. Usable for any situation up to and including weddings, recitals, etc. Such soothing music.

Some great solo pieces!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

The sheet music is incredibly well transcribed and is very complete. I do wish it had ALL of the songs that are on the CD, but the book is still definitely worth the price!

Soundtrack from Pride and Prejudice 5 out of 5 stars.

The soundtrack was very clear and precise to the movie. Some of the songs were repeated but the music was beautiful.

Good Movie Title Piano Book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a great piano book for being a movie title. Its very playable and most of the pieces are fun and recognizable. I was hoping for a bit more period music to play, but this is just a movie soundtrack. Still it was a good investment of my time.

Editorial Review:

12 piano pieces from the 2006 Oscar-nominated film, including: Another Dance * Darcy's Letter * Georgiana * Leaving Netherfield * Liz on Top of the World * Meryton Townhall * The Secret Life of Daydreams * Stars and Butterflies * and more.

Editorial Review:

From every “beautiful mornin’” to “some enchanted evening,” the songs of Oscar Hammerstein II are part of our daily lives, his words part of our national fabric.

Born into a theatrical dynasty headed by his grandfather and namesake, Oscar Hammerstein II breathed new life into the moribund art form of operetta by writing lyrics and libretti for such classics as Rose-Marie (music by Rudolf Friml), The Desert Song (Sigmund Romberg), The New Moon (Romberg) and Song of the Flame (George Gershwin). Hammerstein and Jerome Kern wrote eight musicals together, including Sweet Adeline, Music in the Air, and their masterpiece, Show Boat. The vibrant Carmen Jones was Hammerstein’s all-black adaptation of the tragic opera by Georges Bizet.

In 1943, Hammerstein, pioneer in the field of operetta, joined forces with Richard Rodgers, who had for the previous twenty-five years taken great strides in the field of musical comedy with his longtime writing partner, Lorenz Hart. The first Rodgers and Hammerstein work, Oklahoma!, merged the two styles into a completely new genre—the musical play—and simultaneously launched the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Over the next seventeen years, Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote eight more Broadway musicals: Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music. They also wrote a movie musical (State Fair) and one for television (Cinderella). Collectively their works have earned dozens of awards, including Pulitzers, Tonys, Oscars, Grammys, and Emmys.

Throughout his career, Hammerstein created works of lyrical beauty and universal feeling, and he continually strove—sometimes against fashion—to seek out the good and beautiful in the world. “I know the world is filled with troubles and many injustices,” he once said. “But reality is as beautiful as it is ugly . . . I just couldn’t write anything without hope in it.”

All of his lyrics are here—850, more than a quarter published for the first time—in this sixth book in the indispensable Complete Lyrics series that has also brought us the lyrics of Cole Porter, Lorenz Hart, Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Frank Loesser. From the young scribe’s earliest attempts to the old master’s final lyric—“Edelweiss”—we can see, read, and, yes, sing the words of a theatrical and lyrical genius.

A true must-have book for all musical theatre fans! 5 out of 5 stars.
48 of 49 people found this review helpful.

This book has proven and indispensable part of my theatre library, and if you get it, it will become one for you as well. Want to know what date the original production of Show Boat opened on Broadway? This book will tell you. Who the original stars of Mexican Hayride were? That's in here, too. You will be able to find the answer to just about any question you could ever ask of Broadway's hit musicals. A perfect companion piece to Ken Mandelbaum's Not Since Carrie (which chronicles the flop musicals this book mostly excludes), and a wonderful way of tracking the history of the Broadway musical, Broadway Musicals: Show by Show is as comprehensive, helpful, and essential as reference books on Broadway come.

Editorial Review:

The long-awaited update of this acclaimed, best-selling title. The most comprehensive and widely used Broadway reference book has been expanded and updated to include more than 300 of the most important and memorable productions of the American musical theatre, including revivals. Chronologically arranged beginning with The Black Crook in 1866, the sixth edition adds entries on numerous musicals from recent years, including The Lion King, Hairspray, The Producers, Wicked, The Boy from Oz, Mamma Mia!, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Avenue Q, and others. Features a wealth of statistics and inside information, plus critical reception, cast lists, and pithy commentary about each show.

I loved this book! Some have said that it is too hard, but have you heard Phantom of the Opera? Yes, it is not easy but it was written difficult to start! Listen to the music. It sounds difficult. If it was too toned down, the songs in this book wouldnt sound good! Great book!

Amazing, Incredible, Life Changing 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you have not yet seen the show and you are able to do so, see it. Drink it in. It is the strongest social commentary on repression of ALL people, not just teens, I have seen in a long time. Read the script. Discuss with your friends. It is as multifaceted as a diamond. It is the anthem to an era.

As a vocalist, I own the vocal selections to about 15 musicals I have enjoyed. Every time I get the same watered down vocal lines, removed harmonies, gross accompaniments and rhythms that seem to have been transcribed by a first year music theory student. Not so with this book. This book has the significant harmonies that can be heard on the soundtrack. It is truly a masterful transcription of a difficult score. All the songs you could want are there.

The best vocal selections I have in my possession.
