Editorial Review:

Geoff Emerick became an assistant engineer at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in 1962 at age fifteen, and was present as a new band called the Beatles recorded their first songs. He later worked with the Beatles as they recorded their singles "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand," the songs that would propel them to international superstardom. In 1964 he would witness the transformation of this young and playful group from Liverpool into professional, polished musicians as they put to tape classic songs such as "Eight Days A Week" and "I Feel Fine."

Then, in 1966, at age nineteen, Geoff Emerick became the Beatles’ chief engineer, the man responsible for their distinctive sound as they recorded the classic album Revolver, in which they pioneered innovative recording techniques that changed the course of rock history. Emerick would also engineer the monumental Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road albums, considered by many the greatest rock recordings of all time. In Here, There and Everywhere he reveals the creative process of the band in the studio, and describes how he achieved the sounds on their most famous songs. Emerick also brings to light the personal dynamics of the band, from the relentless (and increasingly mean-spirited) competition between Lennon and McCartney to the infighting and frustration that eventually brought a bitter end to the greatest rock band the world has ever known.

Editorial Review:

Audio productions are made or broken by the quality of the recording engineer's ears. The ability to properly discern sounds, identify subtle problems, and act accordingly to apply the necessary fix makes all the difference in the quality of the final tracks and master. The good news is that these crucial skills can be learned. The ability to instantly identify frequencies, hear hidden distortions, and instinctively reconcile conflicts in the EQ of instruments, audio elements, vocals and more are traits of those who have mastered the art of audio production. The best engineers have trained their ears to immediately recognize audio problems that the consumer and those new to recording arts would likely not hear, but that, if left unresolved, would result in an amateurish final product. For more than two decades, students of F. Alton Everest's Critical Listening and Auditory Perception courses have rapidly developed these skills by using the intense lessons found in this book and on the CD. Unfortunately the books and CDs included with the course were usually too expensive for aspiring engineers to purchase and were often available only in colleges, universities, or school libraries. Now for the first time these indispensable training sessions are available with this release of Critical Listening Skills for Audio Professionals. Through hundreds of illustrations and an accompanying disc containing high-resolution MP3 files with nearly five hours of narration of the entire course, you can acquire the audio discernment skills of a seasoned recording engineer by studying this course at your own pace, in your own home.

The definitive resource, not dated - more like learning painting from an old master 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This was, is, and will be the definitive live sound guide. Take it from MANY professionals. I studied music and this was what was recommended for live sound reinforcement and funny enough when I checked recently - it still is. So never mind the "these digital times" review - this is indeed like learning an art from a master with timeless and always-pertinent concepts useful to those who know this and use this powerful material. The concepts are solid and still pertinent. If you want to learn how to use modern digital equipment specifically and ignore that the concepts in this book can be applied since the acoustics and challenges of live sound remain relatively unchanged, read the manuals that came with the digital equipment. Then read this book to REALLY learn how to do more with whatever you have.

Editorial Review:

Sound reinforcement is the use of audio amplification systems. This book is the first and only book of its kind to cover all aspects of designing and using such systems for public address and musical performance. The book features information on both the audio theory involved and the practical applications of that theory, explaining everything from microphones to loudspeakers. The Whirlwind pcDI is the first direct box designed to interface your unbalanced stereo line sources with professional balanced low impedance equipment. This unit contains two separate DIs - input your signals with one 3.5mm (1/8 inch) mini TRS stereo jack or two sets of color coded RCA phono type in and through jacks. Output is via corresponding color coded XLRs.

This is the book to own..... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As a home studio owner and pro musician of 40 years I am always on the lookout for that "next bit of info" that will push me to yet again improve...and this book was it. I have looked at this book for month's and thought..."Man, is it REALLY worth the $$?"

Now, as I look at my bookshelf full of "Mixing & Mastering & Studio Tips & Tricks" books, I can honestly say that this is the best book I have bought over the years.....period. Read what everyone else has wrote here in their reviews, and you got the gist of it, this book is the bomb!

Even if you "know it all", I recommend this book for 3 chapters, Compression, Reverb, and Gates-Expanders. Written so that ANYONE can understand it, but deep enough to make us old timers go "WHOA..." And the DVD, full of example audio clips and 4 full mixes that are tore apart at the end of the book, just drive the information home.

All of the reviews are correct(including the "eglash" in places), if you are serious about your Sound and Audio in general, this is the book to own. If you REALLY want to understand what the Ratio control does, on anything that uses one, this is the book to own. If you really want to improve your Engineering & Mixing Skills, this is the book to own. If you are using a computer to do audio, this is the book to own. If you use Cubase, Music Studio, Pro Tools, Audacity, or the Kristal Audio Engine, this is the book to own. It is worth every penny!

Can you tell I like the book?! I am on my 2nd read thru!

Editorial Review:

Mixing remains one of the most illusive arts of recording practice and can take a life time to master. Looking at practices, concepts, tools and mixing instruments the author provides a comprehensive insight to the art and science of mixing.

Whether a hobbyist of professional this book covers basic concepts to advanced techniques as well as tips and tricks and is a vital read for anyone wanting to succeed in the field of mixing.

The book is accompanied by the website www.mixingaudio.com, featuring a sample chapter, illustrations, audio and a user forum.

* Rounded, extensive and complete coverage of music mixing
* Includes a DVD with over 700 audio samples and 4 sample mixes
* Covers new topics and mixing trends such as computer centred mixing
