Beneficial for Every Singer 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book has already helped me and I've only had it for 2 weeks. The simple techniques that Seth Riggs uses help to make you sing correctly. This is especially good for singing and speaking.

Easy stuff, just practice it right 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been singing for awhile, this book is straightforward, great for conditioning, obviously I can see why he has dealt with "pop stars", I think the other reviewers were simply looking for something elementary. I am practicing diligently with this one now, so far so good.

My favorite singing program 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I did not get any results using the book alone. But after taking some lessons from a Speech Level Singing teacher, I now understand how to use the exercises in the book. Following that I have been able to use them with much success!

So I thoroughly recommend this book, but with the caveat that you should take some SLS lessons first to understand how to use it.

Editorial Review:

What do Michael Jackson, Anita Baker, Natalie Cole and hundreds of other professionals have in common? They all study voice with Hollywood's leading vocal coach, Seth Riggs. You can learn to sing like the pros with this complete program for training the voice.

What are you folks talking about?? 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this songbook based on the reviewer comments that it represented the full score without the melody. You must be talking about a different book. The arrangement consists only of the melody on right hand (yes you can play the right hand with one finger) and one or two notes of the chord on the left. I'm not even a piano player and it's too simple for my taste. The only thing that would make this a remotely difficult book is that the key signatures are unusual and the annotated chords are sophisticated. I was looking for something suitable to accompany a vocalist. This isn't it. I hate to give it a poor rating because of misleading reviews but I am doing so to let folks know what they are getting.

Don't try This at Home 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Ed Roseman has written a charming book, but has provided the reader with an inadequate explanation of its subject matter. I had to ask my trumpet instructor more than once to explain what Mr. Roseman failed to provide in the way of information about the concepts presented here. The student either has to guess or find the information elsewhere in order to avoid getting lost. I definitely do not recommend this book for anyone new to the subject of music theory unless they have access to someone well versed on the subject, such as a music teacher.

Painless Music Theory 5 out of 5 stars.

An interesting, logical, and understandable approach to Music Theory. Filled with enough examples, insights, and relationships to round out your unterstanding.

A Great Buy ! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This takes most of the information in the "much thicker and formal" Music Theory books and condenses to something manageable, easy to understand, easy to read AND easy to learn. A good book for any musician to own !

Great for Jammers, and those intimidated by Jazz! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Like many a piano player, I learned to play by imitation, that is, imitating what my piano teacher taught me to do as a 9-year old. Ten years later, in my first `college band', I finally learned how to improvise and actually create music by taking a Jazz improvisation class. If you have time to take a class, do it...if not, buy this book. Perhaps this would be a bit complex for the complete novice, but if you're like me, (a person `classically trained' with little knowledge of how music is actually made) then this book is great.

If you're a pop composer and always wondering why you go from C to A-minor, to F, to G, then back to C, this ACTUALLY explains it! Even better, it explains what other chords you can play to make your progressions more interesting. Heck, you may even write a Jazz tune while you're at it.

A definite thumbs up.

Not 5 Star...
-A CD would be nice to accompany the various voicings of scales, etc
-Should have more variety of example songs besides `old susana'
-Could have gone deeper into music history, other than simply stating "most music is composed of the I, IV, and V chords."

Great for first time luthiers 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because I wanted to build my own Flamenco guitar from one of the many preformed and precut kits out on the market. But after reading it I decided not to go for a preformed kit and build it from a basic kit where I do all the work, that is how much information is in this book. Now don't get me wrong this book won't make you a professional luthier overnight, but it will give you a good base and starting point. All you need is the wood.

A very good book 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A very good book that covers Acoustic and Classic guitars building in the same book, this is VERY useful and smart.
You can learn the differences and also to really understand how to make each one of them.
I gave him 4 stars because I would love to see color images! Not old black and white low quality photos
Thanks,
Yaron.

Perfect book for the guitar geek 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This must certainly be the perfect book for anybody interested in the construction of a guitar... - or any stringed instrument, really. The text is obviously written by someone with expert knowledge. I've never read anything as thorough as this. It seems every detail and troublesome process has been covered. The illustrations could be better, though. But it isn't a new book, so I guess we've just grown accostumed to colour photos.

I bought it because I wanted to get started building my own instrument, but now that I have a much better idea of the difficulties I'm facing, I'm not so sure I'll take on the challenge. I could spend the time playing my instrument instead. :-)

But at least, if I do start building, I won't be disappointed if I fail. It isn't easy! Even with my new book close by.

Don't be discouraged. You couldn't ask for a better guide than this. "Courage!!" - as the French say.

Editorial Review:

A complete reference for the design and construction of the steel-string folk guitar and the classical guitar.

Must be good 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought this for my 14yo, along with Metal Lead Guitar/Book and Cd (Vol. 1). They must be good because he leaves them all over the house after he's used them. They keep moving around, so he must be using them.

Lots of fun and challenging. 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Pros
- Helps focus development of technique
- breaks down a method that can be applied for learning to use many different scales and modes
- has a great systematic approach for identifying troubling passages and correcting them

Cons
- can be a little overwhelming when the CD blazes through some of the drills at 250 beats per minute
- while playing chromatic phrases builds finger independence, it is just not very interesting to listen to (this is only part of the book)

I'm have worked with this book for a couple weeks and I have noticed that already my fingers are quicker and my timing is more spot on. It is good for focusing on the important elements of technique.

Editorial Review:

Take your playing to the stratosphere with the most advanced lead book by this proven heavy metal author. Speed Mechanics is the ultimate technique book for developing the kind of speed and precision in today's explosive playing styles. Learn the fastest ways to achieve speed and control, secrets to make your practice time really count, and how to open your ears and make your musical ideas more solid and tangible. Packed with over 200 vicious exercises including Troy's scorching version of "Flight of the Bumblebee." Music and examples demonstrated on CD. 89-minute audio.

Helpful for learning the major modes 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book about 2 years ago. I really liked it. It was extremely useful when I was first learning about each of the major modes. That said, it focuses mostly on the application of the modes, although there is a rather brief introductory chapter on "The Theory of the Modes." Each major mode is covered in detail in it's own chapter, which includes:

-Harmony, matching chord types, and pattern shapes.
-Description of the mode's "character," what gives it that character, and common usages of the mode.
-7 to 10 licks, riffs, and solos illustrating and explaining different applications of the mode, all on accompanying CD and all in both tab and standard notation.
-A jam track for improvising over in that mode (on CD).

It also contains a chapter on "Other Modes," where it briefly touches upon melodic & harmonic minor, the blues scale, and a couple modes of each (like the Altered scale, Phrygian dominant, and the Bluegrass scale). It's somewhat helpful.

One final note: while the examples are not overly technical (for example, no shredding), some of them might be a bit daunting to those who haven't been playing very long. But with a bit of practice anyone could probably get them down. All in all, this was a great book for me, and I recommend it to anyone who's want to be able to do more with the modes. It answers that question, "Okay, so now I know what modes are, but how do I actually use them?"

Editorial Review:

In this one-on-one lesson, MI instructor Tom Kolb unravels the mystery of the modes, giving guitarists a complete approach to soloing and a thorough, hands-on explanation of Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian. He also covers: melodic minor, harmonic minor and the blues scale; soloing over diatonic and modal progressions; superimposing modes; patterns, progressions, licks; and much more. The accompanying CD includes 83 full-band tracks.

Awesome Book 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is an excellent teaching book for anyone!
Here are the songs: Chorus from "Judas Maccabaeus" by G.F. Handel, Musette by J.S. Bach, Hunters' Chorus by C.M. von Weber, Long, Long Ago, by T.H. Bayly, Waltz by J. Brahms, Bourree by G.F. Handel, The Two Grenadiers by R. Schumann, Theme from "Witches' Dance" by N. Paganini, Gavotte from "Mignon" by A. Thomas, Gavotte by J.B. Lully, Minuet in G by L. van Beethoven, and Minuet by L. Boccherini.

I've only played a couple songs so far, and they are beautiful. I like the Suzuki method because each book gives you a solid foundation and a little taste for the next book to come. I have this CD that comes with it, and the songs are WAY too fast for me to play along with. Also, the book gives you fingerings above most notes, which is a little drawback.

The bottomline is that the Suzuki series is excellent and I would recommend it anyone beginning the violin! :D

Teaches Empathy 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am a 3rd grade teacher, and I use this book in my classroom to teach about bullying, peer pressure (the boy's friends are encouraging him to squish the ant), and empathy. My students love it! I wish I could find a poster of the page where the ant is looming over the boy and asking "If you were me, and I were you, what would you want me to do?" What an incredible lesson for kids! The best part is that the book ends with the shoe looming over the ant and leaves the ending up to the reader. Kids love writing (or just inventing) their own endings! GREAT BOOK!

I loved it but... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book and the intention the author had to encourage children to consider the moral of the story. Also for a children's book it is well written with amusing rhymes. The kids also loved hearing this story. The only problem was this - they got absolutely the wrong message from it!

The book presents two arguments - the ant pleading for its life, and the boy who questions the value of the ant's life. But the author wrote the boy's side of the story so pleasingly that my kids far more enjoyed siding with the boy than with the ant, despite explanation, to my complete despair! My young listeners were quite young, ages 2-3, so perhaps this book would be better for a slightly older child.

Editorial Review:

Hey, little ant down in the crack

Can you hear me? Can you talk back?

See my shoe, can you see that?

Well now it's gonna squish you flat! So begins a conversation between a young boy and the ant trembling in the shadow of his sneaker. This playful story brings up questions about the ethics and peer pressure, encouraging the very youngest citizens to decide for themselves: to squish...or not to squish?!

These chords are not blowin' in the wind 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The review by Kyle is right on. Based on trying out "Blowin' In the Wind," the chords are just wrong. And its not a matter of transposing the chords (or of a missing transition chord) -- the chords are incorrect in whatever key you play it. The whole point of buying a guitar songbook is to be able to read and play; but I had to pick up the right chords from listening to the song, with a little help from an internet search!

well well well 3 out of 5 stars.

pretty hyped on the number of songs in the book and just about all the lyrics, but alot of the chords are off. that sucks. but if you really dont care about that the book will atleast make your pad look a little cooler.

I am very happy with it.

Big Christmas Book for Cello 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I am interested in a book of Christmas songs for cello, and one comes up in the search, but the book shown, the book reviewed, and the book that comes up for purchase is for Piano/Guitar/Vocal.

How do I learn about the Cello version?

No lyrics in the viola version. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I think this is a great book of the collected Christmas songs. I have the version for viola, it doesn't have any lyrics. I try to remember the words as I play, but I'll have to get another source just for the lyrics and write them into this book. I'm not home while writing this, but I thought I'd seen Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, but certainly not The Little Drummer Boy. There are 2 versions of Away in the Manger and something else, I believe.
