A Good Overview of Music in Context 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book does a good job of putting music in an overall historical context. For example, it notes how Baroque productions, whether sculpture or music, meant to "fill space." That accounts for elaborate melodies in music, and movement in painting and sculpture.

Music used to be written as much for the mind as the ear. In some vocal pieces, lyrics correspond to melody. For example, if the word "ascending" is used in the song, the notes of the melody also go up. Vice-versa for descending. If the song mentions one person, a single voice is used--three voices come in when three people are in the storyline.

The musical selections are varied and enjoyable to listen to.

Editorial Review:

When it comes to writing a text for non-music majors, Kamien knows the score. With the care you would expect from the concert pianist he is, Kamien introduces the musical elements and repertoire thoroughly and clearly, without assumptions of prior knowledge but also without condescension. As a teacher at Queens (NY) College, Kamien developed the concept of the Listening Outline, which he incorporated into the first edition of "Music: An Appreciation" and which he has refined and enhanced in every subsequent edition. This is a text with which students of all levels and backgrounds can feel comfortable.

Editorial Review:

What makes a distant oboe's wail beautiful? Why do some kinds of music lift us to ecstasy, but not others? How can music make sense to an ear and brain evolved for detecting the approaching lion or tracking the unsuspecting gazelle? Lyrically interweaving discoveries from science, psychology, music theory, paleontology, and philosophy, Robert Jourdian brilliantly examines why music speaks to us in ways that words cannot, and why we form such powerful connections to it. In clear, understandable language, Jourdian expertly guides the reader through a continuum of musical experience: sound, tone, melody, harmony, rhythm, composition, performance, listening, understanding--and finally to ecstasy. Along the way, a fascinating cast of characters brings Jourdian's narrative to vivid life: "idiots savants" who absorb whole pieces on a single hearing, composers who hallucinate entire compositions, a psychic who claims to take dictation from long-dead composers, and victims of brain damage who can move only when they hear music. Here is a book that will entertain, inform, and stimulate everyone who loves music--and make them think about their favorite song in startling new ways. What makes a distant oboes wail beautiful? Awesome book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My orchestra director recommended this book because it is the next logical step in musical development. I am a private music teacher and principal cellist in a symphony. Michael, my director, teaches at a university and asks his students to purchase this book. I found it absolutely fascinating and it helps to understand the differing styles and composers. Worth every penny! Aaron Copland is a genius.

Fun and educational 5 out of 5 stars.

i bought this book because it's so cheap. I was curious about what Copland would say in the book. In fact, it reminds me a lot of thing I have forgotten about writing the music, which is great.

What to Listen for in music 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a classic. I recommend it for anyone that wants to expand their viewpoint of Classical music. I had lost this treasure in Katrina and I purchased it to replace it for my reference. Copland is one of Americas finest composers and his insights are useful to both musicians and non musicians alike.

Editorial Review:

“A fun read that’ll have you replaying the songs in your mind and on your stereo.”
Chicago Tribune

Have you ever listened to a new song and felt as if you’d heard it before? It’s not your imagination. Melodies are “borrowed,” consciously or subconsciously, more than you might think. For instance, do you know:

  • That U2’s “Beautiful Day” shares part of its tune with an a-ha hit from the eighties?
  • Why Huey Lewis was so upset when he first heard Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters”?
  • How John Lennon’s classic “Imagine” bears an uncanny resemblance to a novelty record cut by his dad?

Sounds Like Teen Spirit tells the fascinating true stories behind these and many other “sound-alike” songs. Showcasing well-known artists from the Beatles to Kraftwerk, the Staple Singers to U2, it’s a virtual catalog of pop music’s “secret history” for casual and hardcore rock-and-roll fans alike.

With this entertaining and informative guide, you’ll be surprised by the tremendously varied musical influences on your favorite songwriters and performers, and you’ll develop a genuine appreciation for what it takes to create a melody that is comfortable and pleasing and yet fresh and original. Best of all, you’re sure to discover some great artists and songs and hear familiar music in a fresh, new way!

Good book, not as musical as I thought. 4 out of 5 stars.
23 of 24 people found this review helpful.

This is a good book for music teachers to have, but don't expect to use all 101 games. Many are variations on a theme, are impratical in the classroom, or simply are not very musical. An example of this is a game where students have to act out the titles of songs, like Charades. Sure, it'd probably be fun, but it's hard to say what the students are actually learning about music from that. I'd say there's 10-15 games I think I might use - or leave for a sub to use. I also would modify most of them to make them more appropriate for a limited classroom space.

Great Resource! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is SO GREAT for teaching music and music themes at home. It works for any number of children, but it is best for a small group of about 3-6. I used it with only one, and it worked ok with some modification. Great variety of games that kids really enjoy playing!

Editorial Review:

"Where lies the boundary between meaning and sentiment? Between memory and nostalgia? America and Americana? What is and what was? Does it move?"--Donovon Hohn, A Romance of Rust Part travelogue, part cultural criticism, part music appreciation, It Still Moves does for today’s avant folk scene what Greil Marcus did for Dylan and The Basement Tapes. Amanda Petrusich outlines the sounds of the new, weird America—honoring the rich tradition of gospel, bluegrass, country, folk, and rock that feeds it, while simultaneously exploring the American character as personified in all of these genres historically. Through interviews, road stories, geographical and sociological interpretations, and detailed music criticism, Petrusich traces the rise of Americana music from its gospel origins through its new and compelling incarnations (as evidenced in bands and artists from Elvis to Iron and Wine, the Carter Family to Animal Collective, Johnny Cash to Will Oldham) and explores how the genre is adapting to the twenty-first century. Ultimately the book is an examination of all things American: guitars, cars, kids, motion, passion, enterprise, and change, in a fervent attempt to reconcile the American past with the American present, using only dusty records and highway maps as guides.

A book that actually has some depth and meaning - - for a guitar player and for life. I bought another copy for my 21 year old son I thought so highly of it.

Save your money!!! 1 out of 5 stars.

This book is so cliche that I couldn't stand to read more than 20 pages of it. It is repetitive and not particularly insightful. If you do choose to buy it based on so many positive reviews do yourself a favor and buy it from somewhere you can easily return it. As one reviewer mentioned it only exists because the 'title was available', so pick up the Zen of Pooh if you want to learn about zen practice and a guitar method book if you want to learn how to play the guitar.

Editorial Review:

A student of Eastern philosophy and an avid guitar player, Philip Sudo realized that each of us carries a song inside that makes us unique. In "Zen Guitar", he shows readers how to find--and awaken--the song within. For professional musicians, amateur guitar enthusiasts, or music lovers who have never played a chord, this unique book sounds a theme of harmony that will resonate in all aspects of life. A good place to start 3 out of 5 stars.
17 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Anthony Storr does a very good job describing the various facets of the complex interplay between music and mind. He points to the biological bases of it, explores the philosophical debates around it and gives acounts of basic music theory. He is a good writer and manages to engage the reader's interest through most of the book. That is very admirable considering the nature of the subject matter and the poor job often done by other writes venturing into similar subjects.

There are however some minor flaws. The connection between the biological foundations of music and western philosophy is a difficult and dubious one and Storr does not really manage to fuse them in a smooth and comprehensive way. They stand aloof and strange to each other. Another flaw is the fact that the book heavily, though not exclusively, draws on classical western music: an admitedly very peculiar and eurocentric kind of music. This leaves out much of the richness of other kinds of music e.x. jazz, folk music, religious music. It also makes his principal endeauvour, to connect music to the mind/body, more difficult. Classical music after all epitomizes the cerebral, distanced and controlled sort of musical apprehension in contrast to folk and popular music which is more expressive and ecstatic. Had he made the opposite methodological choice, folk before classical, he might have had more succes in making the connection between music to the mind/body.

Still the book is an excellent introduction to the topic.

Editorial Review:

"Writing with grace and clarity...he touches on everything from the evolution of the Western tonal system, to the Freudian theory of music as infantile escapism, to the differing roles o the right and left brain in perceiving music."
WALL STREET JOURNAL
Drawing on his own life long passion for music and synthesizing the theories of Plato, Schopenhauer, Stravinsky, Nietzsche, Bartok, and others, distinguished author and psychologist Anthony Storr illuminates music's deep beauty and timeless truth and why and how music is one of the fundamental activities of mankind.

Editorial Review:

A complete education in classical music, written with verve and wit. No music lover can pick up this one-volume compendium without becoming a more knowledgeable, discerning listener. • The sonata form revealed, and why it's been deeply satisfying for three centuries. • What to listen for in Brahms, a self-described Classicist who was one of music's great innovators. • Pizzicato, fioritura, parlando, glissando. • The transformative power of Toscanini–who earned more conducting the New York Philharmonic than his contemporary Babe Ruth made with the Yankees. • And throughout, more than 2,000 recommended recordings.

Log on and listen. Created with Naxos, the world's largest classical music label, the book includes a unique Web site featuring more than 500 examples cited in the text. Look up barcarolle. First read about its swaying 6/8 meter and Venetian origins; then log on to the music Web site and hear it performed in Act IV of Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann. If that whets your curiosity about Offenbach, click to hear the cancan in his La vie parisienne. All online samples are marked by an icon in the text.
