Editorial Review:

One of the most gifted, celebrated, scrutinized, and criticized musicians in the second half of the twentieth century, Leonard Bernstein made his legendary conducting debut at the New York Philharmonic in 1943, at age 25. A year later, he became a sensation on Broadway with the premiere of On the Town. Throughout the 1950s, his Broadway fame only grew with Wonderful Town, Candide, and West Side Story. And in 1958, the Philharmonic appointed him the first American Music Director of a major symphony orchestra—a signal historical event. He was adored as a quintessential celebrity but one who could do it all—embracing both popular and classical music, a natural with the new medium of television, a born teacher, writer, and speaker, as well as a political and social activist. In 1976, having conducted the Philharmonic for more than one thousand concerts, he took his orchestra on tour to Europe for the last time.

All of this played out against the backdrop of post-Second World War New York City as it rose to become the cultural capital of the world—the center of wealth, entertainment, communications, and art—and continued through the chaotic and galvanizing movements of the 1960s that led to its precipitous decline by the mid 1970s.

The essays within this book do not simply retell the Bernstein story; instead, Leonard Bernstein's brother, Burton Bernstein, and current New York Philharmonic archivist and historian, Barbara B. Haws, have brought together a distinguished group of contributors to examine Leonard Bernstein's historic relationship with New York City and its celebrated orchestra. Composer John Adams, American historians Paul Boyer and Jonathan Rosenberg, music historians James Keller and Joseph Horowitz, conductor and radio commentator Bill McGlaughlin, musicologist Carol Oja, and music critics Tim Page and Alan Rich have written incisive essays, which are enhanced by personal reminiscences from Burton Bernstein. The result is a telling portrait of Leonard Bernstein, the musician and the man.

Worth a Read 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am a former student of Dr. Boonshaft, and was introduced to this book when it was assigned as my class text for the semester. The book was very consistent with my Secondary Band Methods class, and reading it allows outsiders to share in Dr. B's funny anecdotes and useful tips. It's almost like taking a class with him. It was interesting enough to read beyond the assigned sections each night. He touches on lots of useful rehearsal techniques and also gives advice on how to deal with different situations. Well known for his conducting, he breaks down different methods in Laymen's terms.

I highly recommend this book, for it an extremely useful read to keep on a nearby shelf for reference. Years later I still refer back to it on a regular basis. It speaks to the the director, the instrumentalist, the conductor and most importantly, the teacher.

If you're like me, it will definitely leave you inspired.

Editorial Review:

Clear diagrams; easy to read 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book has become a common introductory text for undergraduate level conducting gesture in the United States. In this respect, the book is extremely effective.

McElheran's treatise is laid out in ultra-clear chapters, all of which are concise and contain possible "Assignments." Not to get too bogged down in the mire of conducting gesture, McElheran's first chapter is on Inspiration. In short, "make the performers want to do their best," he says.

The next few chapters cover aspects such as the baton, beat patterns, the left hand, dynamics and other aspects of music, cues, off-beat accents, fermatas, and some aspects about rehearsals and performance. There are more chapters but you get the picture. All are good.

Some readers may wonder if this is meant for "orchestral" or "choral" conducting. McElheran states clearly that there is (or should be) little difference and that choral conductors should develop an orchestral technique. While I would say that good choral and orchestral conducing are about 95 % similar (perhaps even more so), choral conductors should be aware that there are some differences, especially in ideas of always "hitting the imaginary table" or conducting every single beat. Nonetheless, Conducting Technique can be very helpful for the beginning choral conductor.

Moreover, McElheran's writing style is very fresh and full of self-effacing wit. Reading the book gives one the impression that Brock McElheran is the type of person who takes the art of music seriously but not himself seriously. I think any beginner of conducting should consult this book, and even professionals might want to have it around just as a reference.

Editorial Review:

For beginners and professionals, this edition starts at the very beginning to include the most basic conducting principles and ends with insightful advice on coducting subtleties. This latest edition takes into account avant-garde music and new music notation.

Editorial Review:

A LIFE IN MUSIC reviews five decades of the rich and uniquely varied musical life of Daniel Barenboim. A child prodigy as a pianist and a virtuoso conductor of symphonies and opera, he has known and worked with many of the most distinguished and exciting musicians of the 20th century, including Rubinstein, Klemperer, Furtwangler, Zubin Mehta, Pierre Boulez, Fischer-Dieskau, Pablo Casals and not least his own wife Jacqueline du Pré, among many others. `He still insists on undertaking grand projects that only a madman or genius would contemplate', The Times noted in August 2001, and recent years have included his work at the annual Wagner Festival in Bayreuth; his involvement with the rebirth of the State Opera House in Berlin; taking over from George Solti's 22-year reign in Chicago; his summer festivals at Weimar in Germany where young Arab and Israelis can play music together; and his worldwide travels. He gives us his trenchant thoughts on Israel today, the problems facing young musicians and the changing world of music at the beginning of the 21st century.

Well written guide to score study! 5 out of 5 stars.

Guide to Score Study for the Wind Band Conductor by Frank Battisti and Robert Garofalo

Guide to Score Study for the Wind Band Conductor by Frank Battisti and Robert Garofalo is well written book that details a comprehensive method of score study. The authors conceived the text with the intention of filling a void of references on the subject. Most texts written about conducting go into detail about developing the physical skills of the conductor. Fine examples of conducting texts include Elizabeth Green's The Modern Conductor and Donald Hunsberger's The Art of Conducting. These references, while invaluable, have very few pages committed to the art of score study. Battisti and Garofalo in their surveying of young conductors discovered that most novices learn the technical aspects of conducting before they learn an approach to studying the score. These students, they discovered, rarely realize a score with interpretive intent. The young conductor typically consults recording references or bases interpretation on prior school band experience. The guide is written with the music education student in mind and is designed to provide valuable first hand experiences as well as a step by step process approach to score study.

Every chapter in the systematic process begins with a quote from a prominent historical musician. The statements provide the reader with a sense of induction into the greater world of music making as a scholar of the score. After a brief overview and introduction in chapter one, the second chapter introduces the initial step of becoming familiar with the score. The process is divided into three parts, a reading of the printed references provided in the score, an assessment of the facts appearing on the first full page of printed music and a cursory look at each page of the manuscript. After a detailed description of the process, the authors furnish an exercise in applying the method to a full score. The score chosen by the writers is Percy Grainger's Irish Tune from County Derry. An additional illustrative device called "A View From Within the Mind" invites the reader to read the thoughts of hypothetical conductor as he/she approaches the score for the first time.

The third chapter and second step in the method is to read the score at a tempo that will allow the student to hear the music without stopping. The reader is encouraged to permit their creative imagination to surface naturally. Score memorizing, utilizing the piano, or listening to recordings of the composition is discouraged. After this initial reading, the reader is advised to reflect on sections of the music in his mind without consulting the score. Application exercises are provided followed by thought provoking questions for self-evaluation and discovery.

The third step initiates the technique of intensely analyzing the score. Battisti and Garofalo give an exhaustive list of specific components of musical composition to examine. The conductor, after completing the detailed examination, assesses the overall structure of the work. The construction of the large form is studied in the context of the micro components. The authors then encourage the reader to develop a flow chart of the composition. An illustration of the process is provided using the Irish Tune score and excerpted analysis notes from the authors' hands.

The final step, described in chapter five, is a synthesis of the knowledge acquired from the application of the preceding sections. Tempos, phrasing, dynamics, color, texture, the composer, historical context, and the style period are all taken into consideration. The utilization of information synthesis to create interpretation is applied to the Grainger score. The hypothetical conductor returns and the final creative stage is demonstrated. The interpretive analysis of Irish Tune is included in a narrative and in the included full score. The chapter ends with a quiz for the reader and a summary of the entire score study process.

The appendix in the book includes several valuable references and resources. A section on instrument transpositions and clefs is provided. Several score examples, referred to throughout the guidebook, offer opportunities to practice the various steps in the procedure. A detailed reference list, a well-written biographical sketch, and other Percy Grainger materials fill the final pages of the section.

The authors define score study as the process in which music notation and other printed information provided in the score are systematically examined and thoroughly assimilated. The Guide to Score Study is an invaluable reference that can be used to supplement undergraduate conducting classes and provide a well-conceived method for score study for the experienced wind band conductor. It dives into the most fundamentally neglected part of conducting, the learning of a musical score. The authors have put together a text that not only provides a process for conductors to follow to learn a new score, but a way of taking logical steps to elicit a well founded interpretive analysis. The included analysis of Percy Grainger's Irish Tune is complete and well researched. The text truly addresses an aspect of a conductor's education that requires guidance.

Editorial Review:

This outstanding "one-of-a-kind" text was designed to assist the conductor in achieving a personal interpretation of music.

A very good book - mostly for band directors, although the author gives some insights on orchestral performance. Would be great if there were more practical exercises. Instruments charts seem to be a bit scholastic.

The most comprehensive yet practical intonation book ever written. Includes tuning guides and intonation charts for all instruments.

Couldn't put it down 5 out of 5 stars.
40 of 42 people found this review helpful.

Full disclosure: I wrote one of the chapters (see the TOC below for detail -I can't figure out how to put my name in the "public nickname" slot at Amazon). But I don't get paid royalties as far as I know, and I don't mind if you skip my chapter when you get the book - I did! (Haven't had the courage to read it yet.) I mention all this to be upfront, and not use a pseudonym on Amazon - a common practice by authors, I've heard.

I'm writing because I read the book (the parts by everyone else) and feel too enthusiastic to keep quiet about it. I literally couldn't put the book down. When I received my copy, I stayed up way past my bedtime reading it, ignoring sleepiness and the fact that I had to go to work the next morning. If you are at all interested in the topic, I don't know of anything of its type that's richer or more engaging. Don't assume that it's another collection of academic papers; instead it has insights not only from scholars but also from conductors (e.g., Mackerras), orchestral players, record producers, and managers. To give you an idea and help you determine if this book would interest you, here's the table of contents, with my short notes on a few chapters - ande they all deserve comment, but I will leave that to others:

Part I. Practice:
1. The technique of conducting - Raymond Holden
2. Conductors in rehearsal - Charles Barber [conductor, archivist of conducting films, so this has details on historical greats like Furtwaengler]
3. Studio conducting - Michael Haas [producer of Solti and Abbado recordings- fascinating information about their recordings and why conducting in the studio, which is what most of us hear in our CD collections, is so different from conducting in concert]
4. The conductor and the soloist - Joseph Silverstein [he's outstanding both as a conductor and a soloist, and former concertmaster at Boston so he played with many greats; again, a lot of interesting stuff]
5. Choral conducting - Vance George [SF chorus master, great choral conductor, very useful]
6. Opera conducting - Sir Charles Mackerras [need I say more?]
7. The orchestra speaks - Robert L. Ripley [played in Cleveland and Boston SOs for many years. Great chapter! A lot of detail about famous conductors and what they did well or badly in working with orchestras.]

Part II. History: [as good a history as I've seen. It really clarifies the context out of which such apparently unique figures as, say, Toscanini arose.]
8. The rise of conductors - José Antonio Bowen
9. The central European tradition - José Antonio Bowen and Raymond Holden
10. The French tradition - David Cairns
11. The Italian tradition - Michael Rose
12. The American tradition - José Antonio Bowen and David Mermelstein
13. The English tradition - Stephen Johnson
14. The Russian tradition - David Nice

Part III. Issues:
15. The conductor as Artistic Director - Bramwell Tovey [if you're aware of his work you will need no further encouragement]
16. Women on the podium - Michelle Edwards
17. Conducting early music - Bernard Sherman [that's me]
18. Training conductors - Harold Faberman [Perhaps America's leading teacher of conductors; his own book on conducting technique is outstanding]
19. The composer/conductor and modern music - Martyn Brabbins
20. Managers and the business of conduction - Stephen Wright
21. The future of conducting - Leon Botstein.[Again - need I say more? Fascinating chapter by this extraordinary conductor/scholar/university president.]

Editorial Review:

Written by many working conductors, this book considers all facets of musical conducting. It includes practical advice on how to conduct different groups (choral, opera, symphony, early music) and a history of conducting presented as a study of national traditions. Designed for the lay reader who wants an inside look at the world of conducting as well as for potential students, it is a revealing study about a secretive industry. Managers, artistic directors, soloists, players and conductors openly discuss their different perspectives in this comprehensive work.

R. Shaw Reader 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

What an inspiring book. This man did it all and was successful at it. I recommend this to all future and current teachers looking at teaching music of any kind. Rehearsal techniques, great stories, letters, etc.

Editorial Review:

Robert Shaw is considered to be the most influential choral conductor in American history. This is the first collection of his letters and notes about music ever published—at another time, it is the book Shaw would have written himself.
The letters are an invigorating mix of music history and analysis, philosophy, inspiration, and practical advice. Shaw examines technique, but only as a means to an end—he moves beyond that, delving into the essence of what music is and what it has to say to us. The heart of the book is composed of Shaw’s previously unpublished notes on fifteen major choral works, ranging from Bach’s B Minor Mass to Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms.
Often inspiring and sometime hilarious, these writings reveal the full breadth of Shaw’s knowledge, intensity, and humor.

Great Book after reading Rudolf's book 4 out of 5 stars.
23 of 24 people found this review helpful.

This book written by the legendary conducting teacher Elizabeth A.H. Green is very insightful and shows the beginnings of conducting from an old master like Malko.

I would reccommend buying the Max Rudolf text (used by most major conservatories and universities) for a more substantial basis. Then read this book and get a whole new perspective on several different baton techniques, rehearsal techniques, and conducting in general.

My only problem is that I don't think this book is worth the 68 dollars that the publisher is asking. First get the Rudolf (much thicker, more info for a basis, and cheaper) and get this book. It's great despite the price and somewhat limited explanation.

Editorial Review:

For junior- to graduate-level courses in Introduction to Conducting (advanced techniques included), Band, Orchestra, Chorus. Requires background in Music Theory, Music History, and Music Analysis. Building upon a classic conducting text, this edition updates references and expands sections to provide students with more comprehensive explanations of concepts. It emphasizes that a technical approach should be complimented with musical insight and an understanding of conducting as a gesture. This text details baton timing techniques; shows the relationship of time, speed, and motion; and looks beyond training into preparing for a career as a conductor.
