Editorial Review:

For more than a quarter century, Philip Norman's internationally bestselling Shout! has been unchallenged as the definitive biography of the Beatles. Now, at last, Norman turns his formidable talent to the Beatle for whom belonging to the world's most beloved pop group was never enough. Drawing on previously untapped sources, and with unprecedented access to all the major characters, here is the comprehensive and most revealing portrait of John Lennon that is ever likely to be published.

This masterly biography takes a fresh and penetrating look at every aspect of Lennon's much-chronicled life, including the songs that have turned him, posthumously, into a near-secular saint. In three years of research, Norman has turned up an extraordinary amount of new information about even the best-known episodes of Lennon folklore—his upbringing by his strict Aunt Mimi; his allegedly wasted school and student days; the evolution of his peerless creative partnership with Paul McCartney; his Beatle-busting love affair with a Japanese performance artist; his forays into painting and literature; his experiments with Transcendental Meditation, primal scream therapy, and drugs. The book's numerous key informants and interviewees include Sir Paul McCartney, Sir George Martin, Sean Lennon—whose moving reminiscence reveals his father as never before—and Yoko Ono, who speaks with sometimes shocking candor about the inner workings of her marriage to John.

Honest and unflinching, as John himself would wish, Norman gives us the whole man in all his endless contradictions—tough and cynical, hilariously funny but also naive, vulnerable and insecure—and reveals how the mother who gave him away as a toddler haunted his mind and his music for the rest of his days.

Editorial Review:

A lavishly illustrated, rollicking account of the real people and events that inspired the Beatles' lyrics.

Who was "just seventeen" and made Paul's heart go "boom"? Was there really an Eleanor Rigby? Where's Penny Lane? In A Hard Day's Write, music journalist Steve Turner shatters many well-worn myths and adds a new dimension to the Fab Four's rich legacy by investigating for the first time the ordinary people and events immortalized in the Beatles' music and now occupying a special niche in popular culture's collective imagination.

Arranged chronologically by album, the book breaks new ground by exploring how private incidents influenced the group's writing and how their music evolved. Turner reveals that Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was really a drawing by Julian Lennon of his childhood friend; Bungalow Bill was an all-American tiger hunter; Doctor Robert was a New York 'speech doctor'; and much more. A longtime Beatles admirer, Turner tracked down and interviewed the real-life subjects of the songs, probed public records and newspaper archives, and spoke in depth to the people closet to the Beatles to unearth tales that have never before been made public. The result is a book that chronicles an untold story of the Beatles themselves.

Illustrated with over 200 photographs, A Hard Day's Write is a visually alluring and highly entertaining journey to the land stretching just beneath your conscious mind, mapped out with strawberry fields, fool-topped hills, and long and winding roads.

this book is really good if you play along with the chords. the only thing is it doesnt have all the little licks they play, just the chords.

Excellent Book 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is a must-have for any Beatles fan that plays an instrument. It has the lyrics to almost every Beatles song with the chords and chord charts as well. Doesn't have cluttering tabs (which could also be a negative, I guess). The main trouble I've had is that it's sometimes hard to get the book to stay open without the help of some sort of weight. If it was bound in better format, I would give it 5 stars - the content is great.

Editorial Review:

This great collection features all 194 songs written and sung by The Beatles, specially transcribed here for strumming guitarists, from the actual recordings, in the original keys. Each song includes chord symbols, guitar chord boxes and complete lyrics. Also features a helpful playing guide and a full discography.

This Collection is Great 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Beatles Complete Scores really is a one of a kind collection. Sure, the highly trained eye will see simple mistakes here or there, but for those of us who aren't trained classical pianists and just like to play Beatles tunes, this book is amazing. The print is small, but not too small; complaining about the print is really being nitpicky. Plus, no other book gives you all of their recorded songs, and in the correct key. For example, this is the only book I've ever seen that finally puts Strawberry Fields in b flat instead of A major. This book is amazing, team this book with your own ear and you've hit the jackpot.

Editorial Review:

"Easy Piano" is accurate. 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I'm not much of a piano player; I play keys in a cover band, and mess around with a keyboard and synth when I'm bored. This book makes the songs really easy to play. Anyone who is good at chords can take this book and play even more complicated music using it. Or if you barely know how to play, the songs are written so anyone with even a very basic understanding of piano sheet music can play it.

The Music Is Great, Playing Is Greater 5 out of 5 stars.

Although I didn't live during their prime, I grew to love and admire the Beatles for their song writing and musical skills. So being able to play along with them gave me greater joy. This book is really easy for those who took piano lessons but disliked the classical things they were taught. This books gives you the rock and roll aspect of piano playing.

Beatles piano music - easy and not the best 3 out of 5 stars.

Bought this for my 12 year old son who loves the Beatles and has been playing piano for about 6 years. This was supposed to be a replacement for a song book we got from the library, but it disappointed us. It was a little too easy, and the music was not as good as what he found in "The Beatles Anthology: Volume 3". I'd give it a good rating for lots of great songs though, and maybe for a piano player needing simpler music. I returned it and tracked down the other book we had from the library.

Editorial Review:

Easy arrangements of 120 Beatles hits. A truly remarkable collection including: All My Loving * And I Love Her * Come Together * Eleanor Rigby * Get Back * Help! * Hey Jude * I Want to Hold Your Hand * Let It Be * Michelle * many, many more.

Beatles 2009 Calendar 4 out of 5 stars.

Th3e calendar is nice;however, it leans too heavily towards the later years of the band and does not give a whole cross-section of their history.

MOVE OUT OF THE 1960s, PLEASE. 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Fun reading, covering the decades from the 1950s into the 21st century, but I have some serious disagreements with many of the LPs listed here.

The editors and authors are obviously baby-boomers who never got past the Summer of Love mentality. There are WAY TOO MANY releases from the late 60s that are fawned over. The Electric Prunes! Come On! And NOTHING by Ravi Shankar is a "must hear". Ravi's best release was the sperm that created Norah Jones.

However, I do have to make this sobering observation: I have listened to more of the 1950s releases than I have the 1990s releases.

Editorial Review:

1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die is a highly readable list of the best, the most important, and the most influential pop albums from 1955 through 2003. Carefully selected by a team of international critics, each album is a groundbreaking work seminal to the understanding and appreciation of music from the 1950s to the present. Included with each entry are production details and credits as well as reproductions of original album cover art. Perhaps most important of all, each album featured comes with an authoritative description of its importance and influence. Among the critics involved in selecting the list are some of the best known music reviewers and commentators, including Theunis Bates (music writer for Time and urban editor at worldpop.com), Jon Harrington (staff writer at MTV), Seth Jacobson (writer for Dazed & Confused), as well as many others.

Editorial Review:

He Is . . . I Say examines Neil Diamond’s singular place in the pantheon of popular music and describes how an introspective kid from Brooklyn roads went from being a struggling songwriter in the Brill Building era to become a multi-platinum global superstar and the voice of a generation (or two). David Wild—who’s interviewed Neil Diamond for Rolling Stone, penned the liner notes to a number of Diamond’s anthologies, and produced Diamond’s scandal-free episode of Behind The Music—now dares to turn on his “Heartlight,” offering a moving and often hilarious salute to his own Jewish Elvis, one based on his interviews from over the years with the Solitary Man himself.

An illuminating snapshot of a beloved American icon , He Is . . . I Say endearingly speaks to the condition of being a Diamondhead in a hipper-than-thou world, while fully illustrating exactly what it is that makes the man and the artist so special.
