Editorial Review:

This book is about the New Skin-Care Revolution. The good news is that today there are products that really work. The bad news is that there’s never been more confusion and uncertainty about which products get results and which are a waste of money and time. Consumers are bombarded by enticing ads featuring models and celebrities with creamy, flawless skin; salesclerks spouting pseudoscience at cosmetics counters; and countless articles in women’s magazines puffing up the Very Best New Thing each month. So how do you know what really works?
I’m going to tell you.
Because I understand skin-care products from the inside out, I can separate fact from myth, help from hype, and gems from junk and let you know what has been overpraised and overlooked. I’ll be naming names and telling tales of products that deliver and those that are little more than a puff of smoke and a funhouse mirror. I’ll explain the true breakthroughs in today’s skin-care science and the techniques that can truly rejuvenate skin. Ultimately, instead of succumbing to the “inevitable” aging process, you’ll find yourself with a fresh, natural beauty that continues to unfold with time.
So welcome to the New Skin-Care Revolution! Let’s get started.
—Daniel Yarosh, Ph.D., in The New Science of Perfect Skin

Finally—the ultimate beauty bible that gives you everything you need to navigate the dizzying array of claims made by cosmetic companies, and to create your own personalized regimen for perfect skin.

We all want glowing, radiant skin no matter what our age, but with all the skin-care options on the market today, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by choices. Do you really need a cleanser and a toner? Do designer brands from Hollywood doctors really work? Are antioxidants the next true anti-aging breakthrough, and is there a Botox-free way to make wrinkles actually disappear? And, most important, how can you know which products are really worth your money and your time?

As a thirty-year veteran of the beauty world, with experience developing and testing products for brands like Estée Lauder and L’Oreal, Daniel Yarosh, Ph.D., understands your skin from the inside out. And he knows how to separate the help from the hype. Today there are plenty of true skin-care miracles that can deliver amazing results, and in The New Science of Perfect Skin, Yarosh gives you everything you need to identify and choose the best, most-effective products—without blowing your beauty budget. You will learn how to:

Decode product labels and spot marketing hype
Know which highly touted ingredients really work—and which don’t
Use the latest, proven innovations—including DNA repair—to see remarkable changes in just a few weeks’ time
Streamline your skin-care routine by using “smart” products that contain multiple active ingredients
Avoid paying more for high-end brands when drugstore brands have bigger benefits

Bringing a scientist’s eye to the cosmetics industry, Yarosh delivers the inside scoop that will help you achieve flawless skin. No woman can afford to go to the drugstore, cosmetics counter, or spa without this eye-opening, must-have guide.

Thorough book on home beauty 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Not only does this book offer recipes and tips on inexpensive, chemical-free beauty care, but the author also offers advice on purchasing, storing and choosing the proper products. It's a great resource if you want to save money but still look great and without putting toxins in your body.

I also want to note that it is unfortunate that any idiot can post a review on Amazon. Hiding behind a screen name allows people with WAY too much time on their hands to hurt respectable authors that are trying to help people by sharing their knowledge. I am referring to the review by "paradoxes" (ohio) who has a morbid fear of alcohol. Yes it is drying, but those with normal or oily skin should have no problem using it. In fact, it's in almost every commercial beauty product there is. As for her contention about putting "spoiling FOOD" on your skin. What the heck is she talking about? Everyone has heard about cucumbers for tired eyes, mayo for dry hair. And I don't recall any passage in the book that advised using a rotten banana in a facial. My guess is that she doesn't believe in natural beauty care and probably shouldn't have bought the book in the first place. IF she did, that is.

Just keep in mind that not all reviewers are honest and some are plain crazy. If you don't believe me, click on her screen name and check out the 'about me' section.

Editorial Review:

These easy-to-make recipes include facial steams, scrubs, masks, and lip balms; massage oils, baths, rubs, and wraps; hand, nail, and foot treatments; and shampoos, dyes, and conditioners. Includes bathing rituals and massage techniques.

most amusing fashion read I've ever found 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Too many authors of fashion/costume history get really stuffy, even pedantic in their published expertise. This is not that kind of author - she presents in a conversational format historical facts, quotes, a general timeline, and many reprinted photos, drawings and paintings showing fashion or something interesting to do with our favorite topic. Since it's written more like Vogue than any textbook, it's easier to digest and remember, and wholly entertaining at the same time. After all, what is fashion history but a record of the everyday clothes people wore during their lifetime, the same way we look at our bluejeans. This source of endless fashion trivia was a surprise gift from a friend and has become one of my favorite rainy day reads. And there's something for everyone: clothing colors of Egypt - the popular and the magical (p. 50), a medieval recipe for toothpaste (p. 138), a credit for the first owner of black satin sheets in the 1570's (p.177), Madame de Pompadour's deathbed act of cosmetic vanity (p. 227), the origin of men's trouser cuffs (p. 273), several references to fashions inspired by the silver screen (p. 348), the Edwardian revival of the early 1970's (p. 392), and a zillion more bits of tid. You'll find yourself saying "hmmm! never knew that!" pretty darn often. This book provides justification for saying "everything old becomes new again" and a fun perspective on constantly changing fashion through the ages. Especially appropriate for younger readers who couldn't make it through a textbook approach to clothing, or for those of us who like to read in bed without dozing off. Keep an eye out for this volume and snap up as many copies as you ever find.

My 'bible' on beauty and Ayurveda 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Absolute Beauty is a comprehensive, in-depth resource for achieving 'beauty' through the ancient practice of Ayurveda. I am relatively new to the study of Ayurveda, and I found this book to be one of the most well written, user- friendly and practical books I have come across. Author, Pratima Raichur, approaches skin conditions primarily as a symptom of an underlying imbalance - treating the root cause of the symptom as well as the particular way in which it manifests in the skin. So while the book speaks directly to beauty through beautiful skin - it goes far beyond, providing a wealth of information to assist the reader along the path to beauty and health.

Editorial Review:

We all know absolute beauty when we see it--skin that glows with health and an outer bearing that projects inner tranquillity. Yet, despite our every effort and expense, few of us know how to achieve it. In Absolute Beauty, Pratima Raichur, a chemist and internationally recognized expert on Ayurvedic skin care, explains how the external skin tissue is the physical reflection of everything that happens within the body: the way we eat and breathe, as well as the thoughts and emotions that fill our mind and color our spirit. Here, in the first beauty and skin care guide to reveal the secret to lasting radiance through the principles of Ayurveda, Pratima Raichur offers readers:

  • a detailed self-test to determine their exact skin type

  • customized skin care plans for each skin type

  • proven-effective advice for addressing the most troubling skin problems

  • essential nutritional information

  • instructions for detoxifying the body

Horrible! 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 16 people found this review helpful.

We hoped for a quality fashion tutorial type of book but this is nothing but page after page of immature (kindergarten style) cartoonish 'artwork' with name credits only. There is no text, no instruction, no worthwhile notations. We looked forward to the importing of art into Adobe for finish work, a before and after, but found none. The Glamour section began with poorly cartooned men and women naked in showers. Perhaps they were wearing the finest of the Emperor's new clothes? We were so disappointed we returned the book immmediately.

Editorial Review:

Following the success of the bestselling New Fashion Illustration comes this exciting visual bible for illustrators and graphic designers. Featuring nearly 1,000 new and innovative images, it provides an unprecedented variety of approaches to the field. An international array of artists offer inspirational examples of every technique, from traditional watercolors, acrylics, and pencil drawings to cutting-edge designs using the latest technology from Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia FreeHand, and digital photography. The fabulous fashions include womenswear (including couture and bridal); menswear (from t-shirts to bespoke); children’s clothing (tots to teens); and the hottest youth styles. Plus, there’s stuff for sport and leisure, cool accessories, and beauty and glamour illustrations.
This eye-catching resource is a must-have for any designer—and for anyone who loves fashion.

Editorial Review:

American tattoo master Sailor Jerry Collins of Hawaii is best known for his remarkable tattoo designs, blending the fluidity of Asian motifs into classic American tattoo imagery. Until now, most of Sailor Jerrys work has been controlled by a handful of collectors, seen only at museum or art gallery exhibitions or in short-run, self-published books. Here is a sizeable portion of Sailor Jerrys stencils, the newest tattoo collectible, spanning his tattoo career, from the 1940s to the early 1970s. The basic line work of hundreds of his staple and surprisingly beautiful designspin-ups, roses, bluebirds, hearts, and banners, and Jerrys infamous military/political cartoons. The stencils themselves were handcut in celluloid, vinyl or acetate sheets by the master himself for use during his day-to-day thriving tattoo trade in downtown Honolulu. They are, in the best sense, permanent tattoos carved in plastic, enduring through time. In their original condition, most carry residual charcoal dust from their last use. All are signed by Jerry with one of his several distinctive signatures. This is the only book of its kinda workbook for artists, and a design catalog for folk art historians. The value of the stencils is included, along with descriptions of stencils and their usage and a glossary of tattoo terminology.

Editorial Review:

Though other skin-care experts have identified free radicals and cellular inflammation as key triggers to the breakdown of healthy skin, renowned dermatologist and former National Institutes of Health fellow Jeannette Graf, M.D., has discovered a way to prevent these saboteurs from developing in the first place—rather than just treating the symptoms they’ve caused.

Based on the scientifically groundbreaking premise that our cells—and consequently our skin—can only function best when the pH balance of our body is at its proper level, Dr. Graf’s four-part plan focuses on changing your body’s ratio of acids to alkalines. Most of us tend to eat three acidic-building foods (like sugar, refined carbs, meat, and dairy) for every one alkalinizing food (dark green leafy vegetables, garlic, onions, olive oil, lemon, fruit, nuts and seeds, and whole grains)—the reverse of the ideal ratio. And while changing your diet is important, food is not the only way to shift this ratio or reverse the cell aging that’s affecting your skin. The plan also includes detailed information on:

• daily alkalinizing “cocktails”
• quality calcium-mineral supplements
• probiotic supplements (good bacteria in a bottle)
• how to assess your skin and care for it accordingly—choosing the right cleansers, moisturizers, and treatments that will give you the most noticeable results (hint: many of these products line the shelves of your local drugstore)
• the joy prescription: activities that can add exhilaration and laughter to your life and increase the neuropeptides in the brain that actually rejuvenate skin cells
• nutrients in foods that enhance cell energy production and cell signaling

But don’t just take her word for it: Stop Aging, Start Living is filled with testimonials from her patients. Whether you want to see results fast (with her twenty-four-hour kickstart plan), ease into it (with the two-week prescription), or just incorporate a few Stop Aging, Start Living strategies into your life as they suit you, you’ll come away looking and feeling incredibly younger.
