Comprehensive and Detailed 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

When I was taking Cosmetology back in the 2000-01 school year, they recommended to purchase this version of Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology. They were only available new in Canada and cost [money], and came with the theory book as well. Our teacher also had the old 1996 version of this textbook for sale, used. However, this is a better purchase. There are more pictures and colors, its not as drab as the previous version. I have to disagree with reviewers who said this is not a detailed book, I found it to be quite detailed and informative in its information. The book meant to be used in a classroom setting, where an instructor teachers and elaborates from this book. You cannot read this book and automatically cut hair, that is where the practical aspect of cosmetology comes in, when you are doing it hands on instead of reading. But this is a helpful tool for aspiring apprentices or students in cosmetology, whether you want to learn about Coloring, Perms, whatever the case, this is definately a worthwhile tool to have.

Editorial Review:

Complete haircoloring series offers three tapes that demonstrate the latest techniques and applications in single and double process coloring, along with color theory.

Editorial Review:

The classic book about the clothes we wear and what they say about us.

Even before we speak to someone in a meeting, at a party, or on the street, our clothes often express important information (or misinformation) about our occupation, origin, personality, opinions, and tastes. And we pay close attention to how others dress as well; though we may not be able to put what we observe into words, we unconsciously register the information, so that when we meet and converse we have already spoken to one another in a universal tongue.

Alison Lurie, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, is our savvy guide and interpreter on this tour through the history of fashion. She provides fascinating insights into how changing sex roles, political upheavals, and class structure have influenced costume. Whether she is describing the enormous amount of clothing worn by early Victorian women or illuminating the significance of the long robes worn by aging men throughout history to connote eminence, her analysis is playful, clever, and always on target.

THE go to book for Elizabethan costuming 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Far and above the best reference for the cut and composition of Elizabethan clothing. I have been up close to a number of the clothes she references in this book and I can say with certainly that her accuracy and thoroughness is second to no other researcher. If there are any drawbacks to this book they are that there are no color photos of these clothes (but her color descriptions are very exacting) and the way the entire book is laid out can be confusing unless you are willing to spend time and thought into figuring out her methods and the vast scope she is trying to encompass with a limited amount of space.

Overall, one of the crown jewels of my tailoring collection.

Marvelous ... for the experienced costumer 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This purchase was specifically for the purpose of constructing a late Elizabethan wheel farthingale. Although I was disappointed to discover no pattern in miniature, the pertinent drawings were more than adequate for me to put together my own pattern. And the details of the trims, embroidery, etc. are to die for!

If you are an experienced costumer, then you'll have no problem with whatever your project is, in ladies and gentlemen's clothing, including hats. But particularly, the drawings of the men's clothing are the best I've ever seen and in a vast variety of style and era. And I've looked over just about every pattern out there without finding one that suited me. You cannot do better than this book.

Just in case you haven't read the other reviews, the Arnold books do not hold actual patterns--except in miniature. And they are on a grid so that the experienced person can transfer the pattern to paper and make their own. However, of course, you will still have to provide your own tailoring. And for heavens sake remember to make your corset and foundation underthings first.

Be sure to read through the other reviewers as many have valuable things to say. See you at the faire!

How to tie scarves not really 1 out of 5 stars.
44 of 78 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book assuming that it would have creative new ways to tie your scarves. It didn't no scarf roses here or much else that will help you.

Lots of good ideas, but some frustration also 3 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This is a cute little booklet with a lot of creative ways to wear scarves. It has some photos of live models as well as sketches of the ways to wear scarves with diagrams of how to tie them. BUT in at least one case, the descriptive text doesn't match up with what the diagram shows. And the diagrams aren't always complete enough to fully explain how to tie the scarves. Text alone just doesn't do it. I found myself frustrated and totally unable to recreate one or more of the neck-tie fashions.

Unique resource 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Right now, this is the essential primer on wetshaving.

While this is a short book, it covers the new hobby of wetshaving pretty well. Wetshaving includes the search for the perfect old-time shave using double edge or straight razors and a fresh-made lather whipped up by a shaving brush.

Somehow there are many, many products in this niche market and this book will guide you in choosing and using these products to get a great shave. In fact, the goal of this manual and reference is get you to look forward to your morning shave, rather than merely tolerating it.

As far as I know, this is the only unbiased book on wetshaving, as some others are associated with particular companies selling shaving products.

Editorial Review:

The second edition of the beginner's guide to traditional wetshaving---brush, shaving cream, safety razor with double-edged blade. Traditional shaving is enjoyable and thrifty: double-edged blades are as low as 9¢ each vs. as much as $3.50 for a single disposable multiblade cartridge.

The multiblade cartridge's tug-and-cut action often results in skin irritation, razor bumps, ingrowns, and razor burn---thus all the "protective" shaving preparations and "soothing and healing" aftershaves now offered. Most men with skin problems decide that they have "sensitive skin" and never realize that the problem is the multiblade cartridge.

This new edition tells how to cure and prevent razor bumps and ingrowns.

The book is complete in itself, but it also includes links to a host of resources on the Web to complement the book. Sources are provided for all you need to get started. See reader reviews below. For Table of Contents, see Preview.

Another Super Bead book by Susan Ray 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Well, Susan has done it again. I love the look and feel of this square, spiral bound book. A floppy book can send beads flying off your table as you grab at your book; how nice it is that you can actually open to the project you want to work on, and the book stays open (gotta love that spiral)!

The projects are inspiring, as are the photos. There is a chapter on creating different types of beads, from polymar to lampworked. How do you determine the length of your bracelet? How do you add the ending clasp? Need to know some basic crochet steps? Do you want to add found objects into your jewelry? There's plenty here to keep you busy. Beaded Jewelry also contains a resource guide and contact information on the contributors. What more could a glass and bead lover ask for?

I sent a copy to my sister and to a friend in Germany and they both love it!

Editorial Review:

Portable package and lay-flat format allow you to use this book anywhere.

One-stop reference removes increased degree of difficulty and ensures beading success.

Covers every essential beading technique in vivid detail.

Whether you've been beading for a lifetime, or just a little while the time-tested techniques in this guide will have you creating fashionable beaded jewelry, at a fraction of boutique prices, in no time. Step-by-step instructions and 150 detailed photos, plus 200+ beauty shots lead you through every aspect of beading, and offer encouragement to delve into beaded jewelry design.

I really liked this book; however I wish there were more recipes for like soaks for pedicures & manicures & baths.

good basic formulas 4 out of 5 stars.

this book has some really great recipes but it has only four stars because it has some really hard to find ingredients. All in all it cover everything from soap making to eye gel and has some cute ideas for kids, like all natural play dough.
