Not sure if I liked this one so much 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 10 people found this review helpful.

It was difficult to get into reading this book, since I had just finished reading "Single: The Art of Being Satisfied, Fulfilled, and Independent" by Judy Ford (which I highly recommend over this book). In my opinion, "Living Alone and Loving It" reads more like the author's autobiography of singleness than it does as a guide to actually "loving it". It's not as matter-of-fact and loveable as "Single" was. Barbara Feldon tends to get over-wordy where it isn't necessary, as if she was trying to write the great American novel when she wrote this. It is nice to read her book and know that you're not alone in your singleness, but this book was almost down-right boring.

Editorial Review:

After a relationship impasse, Barbara Feldon -- universally known as the effervescent spy "99" on Get Smart -- found herself living alone. Little did she know that this time would become one of the most enriching and joyous periods of her life.

Now Feldon shares her secrets for living alone and loving it. Prescribing antidotes for loneliness, salves for fears, and answers for just about every question that arises in an unpartnered day, she covers both the practical and emotional aspects of the solo life, including how to:

Stop imagining that marriage is a solution for loneliness • Nurture a glowing self-image that is not dependent on an admirer • Value connections that might be overlooked • Develop your creative side • End negative thinking

Whether you are blessed with the promise of youth or the wisdom of age, Living Alone & Loving It will instill the know-how to forge a life with few maps and many adventures.

Rebecca Apsan is the lingerie evangelist. She knows that intimate apparel has the power to transform. That the right bra affects not only look, but outlook. That sexy silk or lace are feminine armor, offering a soft layer of protection against life’s vicissitudes. Her New York City store, La Petite Coquette, draws shoppers from around the world—and not just the celebrities who swear by it. New York Magazine sings her praises as “the best bra-fitter in the country”; so does Lucky. The Wall Street Journal wrote up her role in catapulting Hanky-Panky thongs onto every well-dressed woman’s must-have list—on their front page! She provided all the intimate apparel for Sex and the City. And now Rebecca Apsan is ready to divulge thirty years of wisdom and insider information about how underclothes can make the woman.

For a world where 85% of women are wearing the wrong size bra, The Lingerie Handbook is a complete tops-to-bottoms guide to bras, panties, slips, sleepwear shapewear, stockings, teddies, camisoles, and accessories. There’s the how-to on proper fit, including before-and-after photographs. Guides to matching the right underwear to different outfits. (T-shirts, jersey dresses, white pants, strapless gowns? No problem!) Straightforward advice on shopping, cleaning, organizing, and storing. But inspiration, too: how to cure body-image hang-ups by finding the right undergarments. And romance: how to find your own inner flirt, develop a unique style, and, when the occasion is right, how to dress to undress.

Best pattern book I've bought in years! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I buy a lot of knitting books---probably too many. Usually there's a pattern or two worth knitting, and that's enough.

In this book, I'd say there's a pattern or two NOT worth knitting. Everything else is an absolute gem. I've had the book three months and I'm already knitting two sweaters from it, the striking Transparency and the classic Balloon-Sleeve Jacket (which appears on the cover).

This book should be on the shelf of any sweater knitter, especially, and anyone who wants to knit sweaters. Many of the designs are simple, but not the kind of "big-needle-fast-knit-crap" found in all too many books these days. These are thoughtful designs with shaping and drape to flatter most figures. Most are classics; a few are fashion-forward. Most are mid-weight (worsted, DK, Aran), some are lighter for a less bulky fit.

Do yourself a favor and at least flip through this book, or check it out on Ravelry. I think you'll find you can't wait to acquire a copy.

Editorial Review:

Modern knitters are simply in love with luxury yarns—and the stylish items they can make from these opulent, irresistibly touchable materials. Sensual Knits feeds their hunger for fashionable projects made specifically with the finest merinos, alpacas, silks, cashmeres, and angoras. Beautiful models display the clothing, and every exquisitely photographed garment provides a stunning example of how classic can also be very sexy. A textured jacket features a nipped waist that hugs a woman’s curves, a bishop-sleeved sweater has a daringly plunging neckline, and there are camisoles, silky negligees, and evening dresses too. And be assured: these pieces will look great for years to come, not just for a single season. Any advanced beginner who has mastered the basics can handle these patterns.

not a good introduction to haircutting 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I usually like the Dummies books (although I hate their name) because they explain the most basic information. This book seems to be adapted from a hairstylist's textbook and assumes a lot of background knowledge. The directions keep commenting on my needs as a professional, which I have no desire to become. And there are not nearly enough pictures for a topic so visual a topic as haircutting. I will be shopping for other books that are more geared towards the home haircutter.

The most outrageous and exuberant lingerie in the world comes from a place youíd probably never expect: Syria. Adorned with everything from faux fur artificial flowers and feathered birds to plastic toy cell phones these intimates flash lights play music even vibrate. Well known across the Middle East—in Syria the lingerie forms an important part of the folk tradition around trousseaus and weddings—it is openly displayed in the markets and souks. Authors Malu Halasa and Rana Salam have brought together a diverse and dramatic collection of photography and writing including the voices of Syrian women celebrating this little-known niche of fashion design in all its playful glory.

The recipes were good but....... 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I liked Caseys recipes but..it was almost tiring just reading her instructions,like...start with this pan, then put the mixture in that pan...then stir both pans at the same time.I make and mix my soap in one pan,it's really not that difficult.I agree with another reviewer who said it does'nt have to be a team effort. The best soapmaking book I have ever bought is "The Everything Soapmaking Book" by Alicia Grosso. This book has all the information you will ever need to make really beautiful handmade soap.

Worth having if you want to make whoke like soaps. 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I was initailly intimidated by this book and I owned it for a while before I attempted her methods. But if you want to make soap with real milk (not powdered as an additive) this is a great resource. Making whole milk soap is not easy. This methods works. I admit I use a stick blender and keep it in one pot but my milk has never curdled due to her cold bath method. Her recipes produce gentle, silky soaps and are made with readily available ingredients. My main complaint with some of the other books is that you cannot get many of the ingredients unless you go online and pay shipping. I agree with another reviewer that she does not explain the why behind some of her methods. I think the glycerine and the sugar are for more lather but I'm not positive. I know the amount of honey is limited due to the risk of the soap overheating in the mold. My only other concern about her recipes is that they do not produce much lather and I like bubbles. However, now that I know the method and have had a lot of success I can experiment with the recipes to customize the soap.

Inspiring & Joyful! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book. It's message is clear. Natural is beautful and easy! There's a lot of detailed information and helpful suggestions for people considering going natural. There are plenty of examples and everything is presented in a friendly and direct discourse. It's an easy and fast read and a good reference for anyone going through the process.

What I especially like is the vision of the author to transform our cultural views of nappy hair - one beautiful head after another. I think it shows that even one person can bring about huge change. I don't have nappy hair but I have very curly hair and I can relate to many of the feelings and experiences of the author. Growing up I never thought curly hair was acceptable or attractive and there were no products for me unless I wanted to straighten my hair. I did straighten it a number of times and blowed it out straight the rest of the time. This wreaked havoc on my hair and left it dry, broken, and split. I now wear my hair natural and love it. Mireille's has guide me to helpful products and makes me happy to be curly.

Mireille's book is important. It empowers and ecourages women to embrace their natural beauty without making any judgements on people's choices about their hair. She certainly proves that nappy hair is beautiful and pretty and has many options for styling!

Editorial Review:

Have you ever considered going natural but thought it would be too hard? Try Going-Natural! Many of us are alienated from our stigmatized coils and have no clue what to do with our nappy hair. This book helps you reacquaint with your natural naps and shows you how to grow out a perm. But more than that, this book makes a joy out of what you thought would be a difficult journey.
