Editorial Review:

Curly girls of the world unite! Sixty-five percent of women have naturally curly hair, but for too long too many of these women have either been at a loss on how to care for their hair properly or, worse, have gone through life pretending they have straight hair. No more. Lorraine Massey, a professional hairstylist and passionate proponent of curly hair, celebrates the curly girl way of life, from hair care to carefree attitude.

Beginning with The Curly Girl's Twelve-Step Program (Step Three: I will accept that the scalp and hair are two different entities with completely different needs, and I will treat them accordingly), CURLY GIRL is an illustrated how-to, support group, and tongue-in-cheek manifesto all in one.

There are tips on shampoo (never daily), conditioners (use lots), drying, combing (only when wet and well-conditioned), styling, getting the right cut, and how to Heal Thy Hair after years of strong detergents and damaging blow-dryers. There are before-and-after photographs, Curly Cues, self-help tests, confessions from curly girls, advice to take to your stylist. And for girls seeking their inner curl, compassion and encouragement to let their hair break free-and to put the fear of frizz behind them forever.

Because from now on there's no such thing as a bad hair day.

Cute And Pretty Hairstyles 4 Stars 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The book is not so much what i had expected but still a pretty good hair book. There are some very pretty hair looks in this book. But some that most would not dream of wearing at anytime lol The books layout is not the best but pretty typical oh hair books. It shows the after shot first then goes step by step in pictures of what to do next. In my oppinion theres not enough described in words as to what the next steps are. It should be decribed more then it is. Also the pictures are mostly taken with a dark grey to black background. It should have been done with a lighter background so you can see the hairstyle better in the after photos, especially for the women with dark hair. The step by step photos are done with white as backgrounds though so thats good.Like i said there are some very cute hairstyles in here that im excited about trying but but a few styles look like they were just trying to do something to fill the pages of the book because i dont know who would wear such a hairstyles lol But theres is definitly more cute pretty styles then ug ones. This is a good hairstyle book just not the best in my oppinion. I think its a great books for teens or girls in there twenties. Its not a sophisticated hairstyle book, which is a good thing. Its for people who like trying new things and having fun with there hair.

Not all Good... 2 out of 5 stars.

The pictures in this book are not very helpful when trying to recreate the styles. I purchased this book in order to gain ideas for hairstyles for my little ones. This book does contain pics of different styles, but it will only show the hairstyle from one angle. It may show a picture from either the front, side or back, but not from all three angles. If you just want to read a few stories about kids experiences with their hair, then purchase this book. If you are looking for pictures of hairstyles, consider yourself warned.

At loose ends with your locks? Let the “Queen of Curl” show you how to bring out the best in your hair.

The lengths that women go to in order to tame their curls! If you’ve been blessed with curly hair, chances are that you’ve thought of it as a curse, complaining, “It’s uncontrollable!” “It’s a mess!” or “It’s so frizzy and

Now renowned New York City stylist Ouidad sets the record straight on curly hair and shows you how to start loving the waves, kinks, and curls you were born with. In Curl Talk, Ouidad reveals the secrets to bringing out your natural beauty, including:
* Finding the right cut

* Why brushes and mousses should be outlawed
* The best conditioning and styling treatments
* Blow-drying, coloring, and straightening the safe way

Based on Ouidad’s experience catering solely to curly-haired clients at her exclusive Manhattan salon, Curl Talk is a straight-talking guide for your daily struggle with the frizzies, offering simple, step-by-step solutions for getting a gorgeous head of curls. It will revolutionize the way you treat your hair.

Will I be working at Vidal Sasoon anytime soon? 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm not sure if anyone can learn to master a skill from a book; could you really learn a language or how to cook by reading about it, especially if you're a beginner? But you can get some basic skills and I found this book to be a good beginning. The photos are clear as are the directions. I cut my own hair from this book (not the easiest or the brightest accomplishment) and it wasn't the worst haircut I ever had; it was pretty decent. I actually got a couple of compliments on it. But it was a very basic cut and there are only pictures for a few styles. I have fine, medium-length curly hair and there was no picture for that cut. The author does suggest variations on the basic styles she does give, but without the pictures and the step-by step instructions, I felt it was a little too complicated to chance. Also, the styles are really basic and somewhat dated. I could have followed the style for long, curly hair, although it was for thick hair, but the style was awful even for the 1970s, when it was in fashion.
But you can easily learn to give a basic cut or trim friends and family members' hair in between visits to the salon, save a bit of money and feel proud that you can do something for yourself. And if you really love it then you can go and enroll in beauty school. As for me, I am going to buy a French language CD.

Editorial Review:

No more bad hair days ever again! Give those you love the cut they want--plus remedies to keep those tresses healthy and shining. Close-up photos and detailed instructions teach you how to hold the scissors and comb, the angles at which to snip, and how to establish guides to the correct lengths. Then comes an array of cuts, with and without bangs, shown from start to finish: easy-to-care-for trims for children; blunt-cut, wispy, and layered styles in all lengths for women; and basic short versions for men. As a bonus there are recipes for natural, homemade hair-care products.

Editorial Review:

Kinky, curly, or wavy hair isn’t “problem” hair—it’s just hair with a different set of rules!

For too long, hairstylists and hair-care companies have ignored the needs of women with kinky, curly, or wavy hair, focusing on it as “problem” hair rather than celebrating its unique texture. But now hair-care and style expert A. Dickey, considered by top magazine beauty editors to be the foremost authority on caring for, cutting, and styling curly hair, has written Hair Rules! to end the frustration faced by women with curly hair every day.
Hair Rules! is chock-full of simple tips for all types of curly hair and covers everything from the best shampoos and conditioners to use, to damage-free hair-drying (dust off that hood dryer!), the use of natural oils, and the safest coloring, styling, and chemical relaxing techniques—as well as guidelines for maintaining healthy, gorgeous hair.
“My mission,” writes Dickey, “is simple: to advise and encourage all women with nonstraight hair to strive to attain their beauty, whatever their ethnicity, and whatever their tastes.”

Editorial Review:

For parents, the ultimate styling manual for African American children with wavy, curly, and kinky hair, from an award-winning stylist to the stars who lives by the motto “Healthy care for natural hair!”

Even with her renowned styling talents, Jena Renee Williams found herself put to the test when a sad little girl and her mother came into her salon one day. The girl’s hair was limp, nearly lifeless, and she had nasty burns on her scalp. After calling on her mental and spiritual reserves, Williams patiently worked on the girl’s hair, ultimately giving her Senegalese twists. Both mother and daughter were delighted, and their happiness over the new style inspired Williams to write a guide that would show parents how black children can celebrate their natural hair, helping them to avoid the potential damage caused by relaxers and develop self-love at an early age.

Kinki Kreations offers step-by-step, easy-to-follow instructions for styles that can be created in less than fifteen minutes. This innovative handbook reveals expert techniques for crowning little heads with afros, braids, cornrows, twists, and a variety of other all-natural styles. Tips for proper shampooing, caring for newborns’ hair, and finding the right salon are included too. Best of all, Kinki Kreations showcases Williams’s work in dozens of adorable, helpful photographs.

A styling book with both sheen and substance, Kinki Kreations gives the world a sparkling new key to self-esteem and authentic beauty.

A Comback for the Dyed & Fried 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is outstanding. It is hair therapy for damaged scalps, strands, tresses, locks and otherwise damaged hair with good intentions. Knowledge is power--it discusses the history and culture of our hair, composition, its' entry into the African American mainstream, styles (cornrows, individual braids, extensions, natural hair) treatments, and care for our crown & glory. Thank you, this is a precious gift.

Editorial Review:

For years, African-American women have relied on harsh chemicals and relaxers to "manage" their hair--which more often than not did more damage than good. Improper braiding techniques have also contributed no small amount of harm, resulting in frail, damaged hair and even pattern baldness in women.

No Lye! offers a safe and easy alternative. In this hair-care and styling guide Tulani Kinard reveals the secrets to obtaining and maintaining beautiful healthy hair--naturally.

Discover...
The art of making braids, terrific twists and lovely locks
Easy recipes for products that clean, strengthen, and condition the hair
Ways to heal damaged hair
Painless methods of caring for your children's hair
Fast, easy styles for all lengths and textures of hair
The pros and cons of using hair extensions
