Great book....Here are the facts 4 out of 5 stars.
60 of 61 people found this review helpful.

I started to see thinning of my hair a few hairs(years) ago....so after much research on the internet I bought this book and I bought everything that Riquette recommends..The oils, shampoo, vodka, aspirin, alka selzters, everything was priced at about $150.00. If you go to Whole Foods you can buy the oils and shampoo for reasonable prices..get the basic oils....generic.

THE RESULTS: After the first week or so I saw improvement in my hair texture. After first month I saw more thickness. After about three months I did see hair growth AND continued hair thickness. I think the stimulator oils and the slougher cocktail are the KEY ingredients..Just get the rosemary, almond, basil oils..forget the rest of the oils save your money! The reason I am telling you this is because rosemary promotes circulation of the scalp..and I have read many books on hair loss that promote rosemary, basil, and almond oils to promote circulation..look at the books Nutrition for Dummies and also The Bald Truth. Definitely get the flaxseed volumizer..and use that in place of your gel and hairspray..this keeps the scalp clean and adds thickness to the hair! As for the shampoo...skip it...it is too messy and too much of a hassle to make the shampoo..however if you want the best results then use the shampoos..but remember the KEY Ingredients are the basic oils(rosemary, basil, and almond oils) and the slougher cocktail. As for the shampoo and those of us who are on a tight budget...Just use plain ordinary IVORY SOAP to wash your hair with..a friend who has thick hair swears by ivory soap in making her hair thicker..im a male I have tryed it and I like it..it is 99.9 % percent pure and it seems to be working very well. It definetly adds thickness ..as far as hair growth ..probably not..I have tryed other organic shampoos with good results but they are expensive as hell..sometimes I switch back and forth using organic shampoos and ivory soap ..JUST MAKE SURE SHAMPOO IS herbal or organic or FREE OF CHEMICALS thats all you have to remember to keep your scalp clean..also you can try a product called super hair energizer..it is at superhairenergizer.net..it works well..but again it is expensive to me..10 dollars a bottle and thats not including the other products you have to use.

THE GOOD NEWS: The product works! I have tryed many many other hair growth products with much less success. Also other testimonials indicated they had good results too...The author had very very thick hair on the cover of the book. Even in the regular photos of her she has thick hair..she claims to use products and it worked for her..and it certainly worked for me and worked for others..give it a try.

THE BAD NEWS: The rosemary and basil oils which are the stimulators stink pretty bad. I have asthma so I had breathing problems from these two oils just becsuse the aroma was so strong..if you dont have asthma then you should be fine if you can tolerate the smell. The price is moderate but in the long run you save money.. Other bad news if you want hair you have to work for it..that means mixing and making products and living with the smell and hoping your spouse can tolerate it at night..the products can get messy too. Good Luck to you and I hope you grow a thick crown. (...)

Next? I'll second that 2 out of 5 stars.

I bought "NO LYE!" Tuesday and returned it Wednesday. It was not nearly what I expected after all of the rave reviews. The illustrations were limited and the sections on twists was no help at all. I bought "Textured Tresses" today and love it. There is a lot of celebrity name dropping but who cares. It is well written and provides product names, numerous illustrations, detailed how-to's and a salon directory. Also there is a section on picking the right stylist and salon that I found helpful. Don't waste your money on "NO LYE!". No lie.

Editorial Review:

For years, African-American women have relied on harsh chemicals and relaxers to "manage" their hair--which more often than not did more damage than good. Improper braiding techniques have also contributed no small amount of harm, resulting in frail, damaged hair and even pattern baldness in women.

No Lye! offers a safe and easy alternative. In this hair-care and styling guide Tulani Kinard reveals the secrets to obtaining and maintaining beautiful healthy hair--naturally.

Discover...
The art of making braids, terrific twists and lovely locks

Ways to heal damaged hair
Painless methods of caring for your children's hair

Poor design, some good info ...if you can find it! 3 out of 5 stars.
30 of 31 people found this review helpful.

If you can find your way through this book, great! There is a ton of info, but with its poor design and layout, it can be challenging to get through.

This was published by a do-it-yourself publishing company and it shows.

Excessive Text
Eliminate unnecessary and confusing text. This book is helpful, but there is way too much for the reader and it confuses the issues simply because of its poor layout and design.

Update the hair models
These pictures are clearly from the 70s. Camera techniques and photos are poor. Eliminate excessive photos that just don't project detail. Although, some pencil drawings prove more helpful than photos.

Dose of quotes, proverbs, passages
Get rid of the Quotes, Proverbs, Passages from practically every page! There are famous quotes by everybody from George Carlin to Robert Louis Stevenson to Matthew and Confucious. These are distracting, run-on with the normal text and have absolutely no place in a haircutting book.

Most people who peruse haircutting books do so for home haircuts. There is a lot of info on hair shaft, hair grain, texture, hair loss, etc. Included are many pointers, tips, edge-cutting, beard trimming, short, layered, etc., etc.,

So if you have time to get through this book, happy haircutting.... Rizzo

Editorial Review:

This in-depth guide to giving precision haircuts includes photos and illustrations to show how each cut is done. Basic and children's haircuts are covered. Information on safe, efficient tool handling and hair basics are provided.

Fabulous Hair is a Fabulous Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 28 people found this review helpful.

Two months after I received a spiral perm, my thick, healthy hair began to fall out in large handfulls! I tried all of those high-priced salon products and then I bought this book. It is clearly written in an informative and lively style and I immediately went to my health food store and bought some of the herbs and essential oils recommended for my particular problem. The book has recipes for shampoos, herbal rinses and conditioners for every imaginable hair type or problem and it is SO EASY to do! I treat my hair every weekend and the difference now (2 months later)is AMAZING! I think my hair is actually better! I will have Fabulous hair from now on! This book has been a life saver!
