Hue and cry, or it's only hair, it'll grow out again. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Natalia Ilyin is that most seductive of writers--she knows how to educate by telling a story. The entire utility of myth is being able to find our human selves in a confusing modern world. You can take the long road by consulting learned academic texts and risk losing yourself completely in the railroad timetable of indexes and exhaustive bibliographies from now until the cows come home, and never, never in spite of all the outlandish post-modernish jargon that permeates the texts of our professional class of cultural explainers, understand how myth, one of the engines of culture, expresses itself through the lives of ordinary people (or is it the other way around? Dr. Freud? Dr. Jung? Are y'all out there somewhere? Never mind. We've got Natalia Ilyin.).

Blonde Like Me, a personal meditation on how the myth of blondeness affects women who respond to its demands, is written as a series of connected personal essays, which makes it the perfect vehicle to express in human terms our tendency to conceive and measure perfection, only to struggle in vain to personify its qualities. Ilyin starts close to home, telling tales out of school, mostly on herself, mostly hilarious, and then warms to her point as she informally and lucidly describes the dilemmas and the paradoxes facing a woman as she tries to decide how to express who she wants to be by manipulating her appearance. Ilyin elegantly benchmarks (and circumscribes) the range of her choices by the hair coloring products arrayed on a drugstore shelf, which promise not only allure, but essence of personhood--of identity. But then Ilyin, and this is her genius, expands the ramifications of this deceptively parochial dilemma until she is grappling with, well, pretty much everything. I mean, why not?

As a man, reading Blonde Like Me, I feel as if my deepest and most paranoid suspicions are being confirmed at the same time I'm being given a privileged guided tour of the female psyche--an inexplicably authorized tour. Still, as I read I find myself feeling guilty, shooting furtive looks over my shoulder and thinking--am I supposed to be here? Suddenly I know what it must have felt like to crack the code for the enigma machine back in the "good" war.

There's the pedestal; there's the woman. She may as well get on the escalator and enjoy the ride. That seems to be where we want her and where she wants to be. So what if the pedestal is an illusion. So is personality; so is perfection. So am I with my GQ Quarterly, my Hemingway first editions, my top-of-the-line car, and my obscene bottom line ledger.

Men: if you want to understand the woman latched on to your arm as you charge through the world, or if you want to find a woman to latch on to your arm, buy this book. You will be entertained, educated, and perhaps, if you're lucky, transformed by Natalia Ilyin's subtle wit, charm, erudition, and compassionate insights into our drive to be more than we are. Blonde Like Me may address a dilemma closest to a woman's experience, but it really is about all of us.

Editorial Review:

In this irreverent, unsparing, and witty look at our cultural obsession with blonde, Natalia Ilyin shows us that our apparently modern fixation has truly primeval roots. Highlighting cultural criticism with personal experience, she cites ancient myths, Hollywood iconography, and the daily assault of advertising to reveal why the allure of being a blonde has crossed the boundaries of ethnicity, economics, and age. In essence, she shows us the difference between simply having blonde hair and being a blonde.

not my cup of herbal tea mate! 2 out of 5 stars.
19 of 102 people found this review helpful.

Sorry, not my cup of herbal tea mate!!
However I would say read as many books as you can on the subject then you would get a higher understanding.
This book is like having group therapy or interviewing other women, but it is not all black women's views.I am reviewng it because I think it is worth a read.

As you may or may not know African coily hair is quite unique in vision, texture, behaviour and probably in chemical make up too. Coily haired women around the world, go to the most extremes in terms of spending.
(Spending time, spending pain and the spending price to have African coily hair styled)
A hairstyle that we believe looks good or will help us to become socially and economically advanced.
Or maybe for our own self-esteem and maybe to attract the charms of a love interest.
Either way, psychologically and philosophically I believe that your hair is a reflection of the state of your consciousness, your internal beliefs and your relationship with the world.
What about exploring physics through african hair?
For example how much pressure, gravity and tension and tearing do we put our hair through by combing it?
let alone excessive harsh combing.
Mathematically speaking how many of you readers can tell me how many curls/coils per inch your hair has, and does it vary in coil and moisture?
Next question:When does the nature of the hair change and why?
(i know it does!)
It seems to me all these books on afro hair are good and I welcome it, but we still need to be more informed and they all seem to need better editing, just like Black American beauty magazines.I must campaign for better grammar and less air brushed photos!!!
It is as if we like to see ourselves falsely rather than the reality of what we are...
Black women need to demand more scientific reasoning from our books and be less competitive over black men which only fuels their egos and as a result probably creates more baby-mothers!!!
Sorry but I had to vent out my opinions.

I maintain that it is still worth reading, more than any carcinogenic chemical so called hair treatment that you pay for.

Anyway what do I know I am a black african british woman!!!!
Most of you Americans think we in Britain have no trains or any kind of progressive development!!!
Anyway if I wrote my book answering my questions that I put to you how many of you would buy it?

Very good book for relaxed heads. 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I have read many hair care books and this one is the best for relaxed hair. It is a text book. It has great pictures and step by step instructions. If you want to know how to wrap, fingerwave, make a basic roll, how to apply a relaxer, color etc, this book is for you. Better than a hair care magazine that shows mostly weaved hair. I'm a natural curly girl but I don't have a problem with healthy relaxed hair.

One Satisfied Customer.... 5 out of 5 stars.

As we all know, these people who write these books are'nt going to share every secret of the industry, but this book will bring you closer to those well hidden secrets. I have never bought a book that was so detailed in every aspect from hygiene, nails, hair braiding, weaving, cutting, and styling. I was very much so satisfied with the photos, illustrations, and information given in this book. Its is in fact all worth every penny.

Detailed Photos 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Admiring the black and white photos in Sagay's book is a delight. The hair styles are exotic and complex. She describes two different techniques, cornrowing and hair threading, with enough clarity and step by step photos that it is possible for a beginner to achieve one of the styles. There are also many outragously time-consuming examples that would challenge the most proficient hair stylist to reach new heights of difficulty. Sheer, outrageous fantasy is the only way to describe some of the hair styles, but they are still fun to see. Sagay gives a fair amount of historical background to show where and when the hairstyles originated. I was fascinated to discover that some of the hairdressing ingredients used in Africa were oil, charcoal and clay. The faces of the women and girls in the book are serene, joyful and proud. I wish that the book was updated to show current styles and that some of the photos were in color.

Editorial Review:

For parents, the ultimate styling manual for African American children with wavy, curly, and kinky hair, from an award-winning stylist to the stars who lives by the motto “Healthy care for natural hair!”

Even with her renowned styling talents, Jena Renee Williams found herself put to the test when a sad little girl and her mother came into her salon one day. The girl’s hair was limp, nearly lifeless, and she had nasty burns on her scalp. After calling on her mental and spiritual reserves, Williams patiently worked on the girl’s hair, ultimately giving her Senegalese twists. Both mother and daughter were delighted, and their happiness over the new style inspired Williams to write a guide that would show parents how black children can celebrate their natural hair, helping them to avoid the potential damage caused by relaxers and develop self-love at an early age.

Kinki Kreations offers step-by-step, easy-to-follow instructions for styles that can be created in less than fifteen minutes. This innovative handbook reveals expert techniques for crowning little heads with afros, braids, cornrows, twists, and a variety of other all-natural styles. Tips for proper shampooing, caring for newborns’ hair, and finding the right salon are included too. Best of all, Kinki Kreations showcases Williams’s work in dozens of adorable, helpful photographs.

A styling book with both sheen and substance, Kinki Kreations gives the world a sparkling new key to self-esteem and authentic beauty.

This book is ok. It has pretty good diagrams. The downfall of this book is that the African American section is the last 20 pages of the book. I thought this book could have been 50/50.

No new information 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Although heavily promoted, Andre's book did not provide any new information on how to care for hair. What I particularly disliked was the negativity involved in his presentation of the type 4 hair type. He just added another myth to the list by saying our only two options are to either crop our hair short or relax it. I don't recommend this book.

Very disappointing 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I have always admired Oprah's hair,so when I found a book written by her stylist I thought my haircare problems had been answered.Unfortunately this book is just full of Andre's personal thoughts and experiences rather than giving useful advice about hair.
As a woman of afro-carribean origin,I found the book focused on all types of hair which doesn't exactly help me out.Yes,he highlights the importance of conditioning hair, and the damaging effects of no-lye relaxers-which has prompted to change to a lye one.
His hair classification system of 4 basic types of hair is useful, but overall I have to give this book the thumbs down!
I have ordered books by Shamboosie & Lisa Akbari and I'm praying for a far better result.

Not for really long hair 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The photos are beautiful, the directions clear, the designs classic but refreshing. However, not one model has hair below her shoulder blades. Most have bra length hair, and one has hair only to the tops of her shoulders. Though good for ideas, you will have to do significant design adaptation if you have truly long hair or very thick hair. If you have both very long and very thick hair, this book will be of limited use to you. Additionally, almost all designs call for back-combing, and many for flat ironing, hot iron curling, and hair spraying. If you are as careful about your long hair as I am about mine, you will be loathe to subject it to these elements. If you are content with medium-length hair that you will only occasionally subject to these elements, then this book is a 5 star. But if you have really long hair and you treasure it, this book is no more than 3 stars because the author completely missed the design and styling concerns of that demographic.

Editorial Review:

The first book to explore the role of hair in women's lives and what it reveals about their identities, intimate relationships, and work lives

Hair is one of the first things other people notice about us--and is one of the primary ways we declare our identity to others. Both in our personal relationships and in relationships with the larger world, hair sends an immediate signal that conveys messages about our gender, age, social class, and more.
In Rapunzel's Daughters, Rose Weitz first surveys the history of women's hair, from the covered hair of the Middle Ages to the two-foot-high, wildly ornamented styles of pre-Revolutionary France to the purple dyes worn by some modern teens. In the remainder of the book, Weitz, a prominent sociologist, explores--through interviews with dozens of girls and women across the country--what hair means today, both to young girls and to women; what part it plays in adolescent (and adult) struggles with identity; how it can create conflicts in the workplace; and how women face the changes in their hair that illness and aging can bring. Rapunzel's Daughters is a work of deep scholarship as well as an eye-opening and personal look at a surprisingly complex-and fascinating-subject.
