Seckel, Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Save Your Face is an in depth review of medically based, scientifically proven methods for restoring beautiful facial skin and preventing further aging without plastic surgery.. He then thoroughly in eadsily understood terms teaches about skin cremes and the new non surgical facial rejuvination methods such as botox, restylane, radiesse, lasers, IPL, photofacial, thermage, titan, microdermabrasion, micropeel, and other widely advertized technigues. Finally Dr. Seckel wroites detailed safety guidelines to protect the reader from injury or fraud. A complete resource for anyone interested in healthy, beautiful, youthful skin

Completely Useless for Anyone Over 12 1 out of 5 stars.
11 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Cindy Crawford is a model who is fortunate enough to have professional makeup artists apply her makeup. You would think with access to these professionals, she would have learned some more impressive techniques on the way. Read the disappointing reviews of this book, and don't make the mistake I did and buy the book anyway!

This book is not for people who don't know whether to use liquid or powder makeup. This book is for people who can't pronounce the word makeup. I imagine that this book would be a good gift for a young girl who is just starting to learn how to wear makeup. It faithfully catalogues the different types and textures of makeup and the types of brushes used. However it gives NO COMMENTARY on which types of makeup should be used for different looks. Applying foundation and skin care are the main things emphasized. Anyone who has been wearing makeup for even a brief time knows what is out there and knows how to put the simple products on. There is no mention in this book of color choice, contouring, shading, or more sophisticated styles. These are the difficult aspects of makeup that very few people can pick up on their own and require a book to learn. The "techiques" and lists of makeup types that obtain from this book can easily be figured out by a simple trip to the makeup counter.

Another tell-tale sign of a bad makeup book is the lack of pictures featuring different looks on different faces. The only face in this book is Cindy Crawford, and all the makeup looks are natural, and might very well be from the same makeup session. In every picture it doesn't even look like she's wearing makeup. Obviously, I don't think the ground breaking techniques this book mentions (blending is important, shocking!) make her look good. The fact that she's Cindy Crawford makes her look good. The pictures are useless, and they all look the same.

The makeup philosophy Crawford swears by gives the best possible insight into the quality of the this book.

"Makeup should not take more than 5 minutes"

If a rudimentary understanding of makeup is what you require, then this book is the perfect present for your 13th birthday. However, by your sweet sixteen you're going to need something with a lot more substance than this. Only a model with a professional makeup artist to rely upon can get by with this simplistic knowledge of makeup.

Editorial Review:

Cindy Crawford demonstrates how to put on a "basic" face simply and effectively. Drawing on the invaluable advice of world-renowned makeup artist Sonia Kashuk, Cindy offers how-to tips on skin preparation and the tools you need to get started. Then, in separate sections, she discusses using concealer and powder to create the perfect foundation and teaches ways to enhance eyes, cheeks, and lips to bring out the natural beauty in all women.

Cindy knows that in the '90s, women are too busy to spend a lot of time and fuss putting on makeup. She doesn't suggest imitating the glamorous, made-up looks of models who adorn magazine covers, but gives practical advice for every woman who wants the face she sees in the mirror in the morning to look its best.

Editorial Review:

If you find yourself lost and alone in the skin-care aisle; if you're thinking of going under the knife, but hoping you won't have to; if you need specific, detailed information about how to get rid of the bags under your eyes or those ever-deepening furrows in your brow; if you've gone to your girlfriends, women's magazines, cosmetics counters, facialists, and plastic surgeons and gotten lots of conflicting answers; then Dr. Fredric Brandt's simple, streamlined system is for you. With 10 Minutes/10 Years, one of the world's most famous cosmetic dermatologists offers a breakthrough skin-care program that will take you only ten minutes a day -- and will reverse your skin's aging process by ten years.

There is a skin-care revolution taking place; the days of washing your face with soap and water and slapping on some cream are long gone. But this means that skin care isn't simple anymore. As new products appear, seemingly overnight, it becomes harder to know what's right for your skin. With warmth and humor, Dr. Brandt cuts through the information overload to provide concrete information and advice for women of all ages and of every skin type. He helps you determine who to go to and who not to go to as well as what to ask.

10 Minutes/10 Years is a uniquely formatted, problem/solution-driven guidebook that reveals many unknown threats to the skin which age it before its time, such as sugar and diet (Chapter 3). Need to know about the brown spots on your cheeks? Turn to Chapter 6. Sick of your drooping chin? Read Chapter 14. Driven to despair by your thinning hair? Look at Chapter 19. But before you decide what system you need, consult Chapter 4 for a comprehensive list of the best products, treatments, and procedures available. Dr. Brandt explains what they are and how they work -- from the least invasive, over-the-counter creams to the most cutting-edge injectibles. Once you understand the basics, you can move on to your specific area of concern in the book's final section, which offers precise information for every skin type.

There is no one-shot solution -- we are constantly aging, and we have to keep maintaining ourselves. 10 Minutes/10 Years is Dr. Brandt's targeted approach to this maintenance. His system has already helped thousands of people look younger, and now readers will have their own one-way ticket back to a youthful appearance.

This book belongs in every Dermatologists waiting room 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a Dermatologist and loved this book. While I already knew most of the things in the book, it is helpful to have information to relay to patients in plain English. I have highlighted passages and written my own comments in the margins and will place copies of this book in my examination rooms for patients to read. I especially like the chapters about sun damage and the prevention of photodamage. I am glad to see in print many of the things that I have been telling patients for years, especially about the sales tactics of cosmetic companies. This book is loaded with practical advice. It does not, however, contain directions to the fountain of youth.

Editorial Review:

You're no idiot, of course. You know that there's a moisturizer for every skin type and that you should use sunscreen before hitting the beach. But when it comes to finally discovering the secret to glowing, healthy-looking skin, you feel like Ponce de Leon searching for the Fountain of Youth. Don't end your quest yet! The complete Idiot's Guide to Beautiful Skin is packed with expert advice on everything from soaps to common cosmetic procedures. In this Complete Idiot's Guide you get:

again: quality from hardy marks publications 5 out of 5 stars.

do you think you are serious about tattooing? consider yourself a bit of an expert on it? and you don't have this book? (not even any of the other tattootime issues?) then re-think and re-consider! anyone serious about tattooing, its backgrounds, its history should have this book. and all the other four issues. they are all out on hardy marks publications; the publishing company owned and run by don ed hardy. whom you should know.

this volume is entitled "tattoo magic" and covers the following topics:

1. religious christian tattoos. apparently it already says in the bible that you should not tattoo your skin. here they elaborate on that believe, and prove that according to history it can't just be quite true...

2. inventive "cover-ups". here they show step by step progress of the cover-ups. all of them perfectly executed by don ed hardy himself. inspiring for any tattooer, i'd say.

3. sacred calligraphy. this chapter is only two pages long, and has only a short text about tattoing in the holy language of sanskrit. nevertheless, very interesting. (it inspired me for yet another tattoo...)

4. tattoing charms. here you get good background information on how this is handled in thailand. and how important it is there!

5. dragon tattoo design. not much new information if you already know about this subject, but some great photographs of works of various artists are shown.

6. tattoo magic. tattoo magic!

7. interview with richard o. tyler. an interesting talk with an interesting person. richard o. tyler was, amongst other things, a tattooer who believed in the magic of it, used very special home-made inks and tattooed only according to astrological laws.

as in all the other "tattootime" issues, all the photographs included are very good, and so are the "suggested further reading" listings at the end of each article/chapter.

This book is unfortunately, out of date. New technologies are available that are not discussed. What there is is OK.

Fascinating 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book. I had heard about a lot of these procedures, such as microdermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing, but I didn't really understand what they did or how they work. I have already had three sessions of microdermabrasion--it's wonderful. Thanks for a very informative book.

Very informative 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be very helpful, especially if you are wanting to have some of these procedures done yourself. I especially liked the sections on lip augmentation--for example, I didn'tknow their were choices on temporary vs permanent filler materials. An around a good book. Easy to understand. Great before and after pictures.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive guide to nonsurgical cosmetic facial procedures covers botox injections, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing, laser hair removal, and collagen injections. Each procedure is analyzed in terms of intended results, ideal candidates, details of the procedures, anesthetics, and follow-up care. Before and after photographs illustrate the medical descriptions and vividly show the dramatic changes.

Surprisingly entertaining for a book about skin! 5 out of 5 stars.
47 of 50 people found this review helpful.

I expected a book on skin written by an eminent dermatologist to be chock-full of helpful information, but I was astounded (yes, astounded) to find myself reading "Total Skin" like a novel. By balancing instruction with entertainment, Dr. Lefell produced a book that kept me reading long after I had planned to stop. He also answered some very important questions I didn't know enough to ask. From make-up to laser surgery to skin cancer - it's all covered (in a very readable form and often using graphics). I highly recommend that you find a place on your shelf for this one -- I guarantee you'll keep referring to it.

Editorial Review:

What Our Bodies, Ourselves did for womens health, this complete reference guide by a highly respected dermatologist will do for skin. Written for adults of all ages and races, Total Skin offers information on the latest medical research, answers to commonly asked questions, and to questions you never thought you would need to ask. In addition, Dr. Leffell offers innovative action steps for targeted care, and includes interesting and informative sidebars. Total Skin promises to be the only general reference book by one of the countrys most highly respected dermatologists to go beyond beauty tips and miracle fixes. Accessible, informative, and written in the informal but authoritative tone of a trusted expert, Total Skin will stand beside other family medical reference books to provide accurate and up-to-date information on the most important, and least understood, part of the body.

quality as usual from hardy marks publications 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

do you think you are serious about tattooing? consider yourself a bit of an expert on it? and you don't have this book? (not even any of the other tattootime issues?) then re-think and re-consider! anyone serious about tattooing, its backgrounds, its history should have this book. and all the other four issues. they are all out on hardy marks publications; the publishing company owned and run by don ed hardy. whom you should know.

this volume is entitled "art from the heart" and goes into a bit of a different direction than the previous four "tattootime" books; which also has to do with the fact that it has a lot more pages. it goes more deeply into works of artists (with lots of photographic examples): tattoo legend bob shaw, thomas woodruff (paintings, not tattoos!), thom de vita, cynthia witkin (very unusual and unique style of tattooing!) and michael malone (a very respected figure in the tattooing community). all of them are very interesting artists. there's an article (and photographs) about "weirdo art and the rebirth of bold american classics" (meaning classic tattto designs). another one by tricia allen (who has done a lot of great research on lots of tattooing traditions!) entitled "european explorers and marquesan tattooing - the wildest island style"; very informative and educating. the second last article is dedicated to samoan tattoo chief suluape petelo, and the last one takes a look at how tribal tattooing has developed over the years, since it had first gotten big-time attention in "tattootime 1", back in 1982!

again, i feel, this book is worth the money for the photographs alone!
