WLS is a big decision and you can't possibly get all the answers from your surgeon's office. There is just too much to know. Maria 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've received more help from the first half of this book, than I have in 25 years of dieting. For the first time in my life, I looked in the mirror and saw some positives and I'm 100 pounds overweight! In one month I've lost 10 pounds and I'm finally dealing with the issues that have been plaguing my life. This is a doable lifestyle change that will enable me to be free from excess weight and the mental games that keep me overweight.

Shrink Yourself Gets It 4 out of 5 stars.

This book goes farther than any I've read before in delving into the issues of compulsive overeating. I agree with some of the other reviewers in that, while it provides fabulous insight, the solutions aren't miracle cures. Unfortunately, I don't think there ARE any miracle cures for eating and food addicts.

That being said, I strongly urge you to read this book. It is informative and even though I've read many others in this genre, Dr. Gould brings great insight into the overeating dilemma.

Editorial Review:

Studies show that the reason why many people gain weight—and keep it on—is emotional eating, not physical eating. Now Dr. Roger Gould, a psychotherapist and a leading authority on emotional eating, shows how to overcome fear, anxiety, and other stresses and stop using food as an over-the-counter tranquilizer that can cause weight gain. With 12 practical ways to stop emotional eating and an eight-session program, Dr. Gould helps you become your own eating therapist and shrink yourself for good.

Editorial Review:

Why was this a #1 bestseller in Canada in 2002? Because it is an easy-to-follow, easy-to-stick-to, truly healthy approach to eating that is based on the Glycemic Index, the original science behind The Zone Diet, but eliminates that diet's complexity and tendency to leave dieters wanting more. If you can understand a traffic light, you can understand this diet--and lose weight permanently without feeling hungry, counting calories, or jeopardizing your health. If a food is in the green column, eat it. If it's in the red column, avoid it. And if it's in the yellow column, proceed with caution. Take bread, for example. White bread, with its high G.I. number, is red-because it's so highly processed the body digests it quickly, resulting in a spike in blood sugar, a release of insulin, potential storage as fat, and a quick return of the hungry feeling. Low-G.I. 100% stone-ground whole-wheat bread is green-the body takes a while to digest it, with no spike in blood sugar and a much longer feeling of satiety. Green, yellow, red: It's all here, with a full explanation of how the diet works, plus ratings for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, eating out or eating in. Includes some recipes, snack ideas, a shopping list, and tips on dining out.

Well researched, but more than a bit snobbish 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The authors are only willing to help the chosen ones. Mother didn't nurse you when you were born? Hopeless. Took some amphedimines in college while studying for final exams? Hopeless. You get the idea. So, if you're one of those perfect people who lived a Susie-Creamcheese life, this is the book for you. But, if you're so perfect, why would you need it? Gave them 2 stars for research alone; wouldn't recommend this book to any of my friends.

Mastering Leptin 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a pretty good, straighforward book about Leptin and if Leptin is important to you(and I think it should be), it's one of the best to get. It's a lot better than the Rosedale book on the subject - much more succinct and useful, much better writeen.

Editorial Review:

Mastering Leptin contains exciting health advancements in solving obesity and weight problems, fatigue and low energy, low thyroid function, hypothyroidism, stress eating and food cravings, hormonal imbalance, menopausal weight gain, accelerated aging, fibromyalgia. More than a diet book, Mastering Leptin includes lifestyle solutions that will help individuals lose weight, increase energy, and reduce risk for disease.

mostly useless and far from complete 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book's data on fat and carbohydrates is insufficent for modern diets. It does has a lot of other useful data, some useless data, and is missing a lot of expected products.

The biggest problem is the way fat is listed. Saturated fat, unsaturated fat, and trans fat are all lumped into a single number for total fat. This makes the book inadequate for Atkins or South Beach dieters. You can't tell good fats from bad.

The listings show total carbohydrates, and dietary fiber, but they don't show net carbs, or sugar alcohols. This is important for dieters and diabetics since many of our specialty foods are sweetened with these substitutes. Of course, the book generally omits diet foods, so this may not matter.

There is no information about vitamins or minerals.

It does contain a lot of useful information about basic ingredients that are often sold without nutritional labels (for example, fresh meat and vegetables). There's also a lot of information about foods served at chain restaurants, which is useful for deciding to where to go.

The bulk of the data seems to have been copied from prepared food product labels. This isn't very useful, since I can usually just look at the package, though it is sometimes convenient. It's even less useful for the obsolete products.

A lot of obvious expected products are missing. I can't find any mention of diet soft drinks, diet meal bars, diet shakes, low-carb foods, or liquor. Beer and wine are mentioned, but in poor detail. Beer has only two entries: "regular" and "light". If they can devote 4 pages to different brands of fully-sugared soft drinks, they could at least tell us the differences between a stout and an india pale ale. Wine is a little better. They list desert, red, rose, and white. However, I find it difficult to believe a sweet white zinfandel has the same numbers as a dry chardonnay.

This book wasn't a complete waste of money, but I still want something better.

Editorial Review:

Good Info If You Are Obese 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I was expecting more motivational tips for diet and exercise in a book titled "Body Clutter." It is written more for obese people who are brand new to any sort of healthy habits. It also talks a lot more about self esteem issues than I thought necessary.

Editorial Review:

In Sink Reflections, Marla Cilley -- the FlyLady -- helped hundreds of thousands of her fans combat overwhelming household C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome). Taking a "baby-steps" approach, she offered little chores to do every day, to wipe out clutter and feelings of inadequacy. Now, in Body Clutter, the FlyLady and Leanne Ely, the Dinner Diva and creator of the Saving Dinner series, team up to teach readers how to handle and erase the clutter they carry on their bodies and minds when it comes to body image.

The FlyLady and Leanne say that it's not about finding the perfect diet, it's about the way you feel about food and your body and understanding sound nutrition. With warm voices, unique lingo, and no preaching, they apply a step-by-step technique, coaching the readers from beginning to end and sharing their own success stories along the way.

Covers an important topic, but lacks substance 3 out of 5 stars.
16 of 20 people found this review helpful.

It seems that in most cases that nonfiction authors are motivated by one of two things when creating their works. Some feel that they have some sort of information that needs sharing, and use books as a way to get their word out. These authors have a true passion for their topic, which clearly shows when reading their books. Others are driven purely by profit. Sadly, it seems that the latter is true of Donna Gates and her Body Ecology Diet. Though this book does cover an important topic, it lacks substance and fails to deliver. However, it may be a good source for someone used to only mainstream health books and wanting a simple primer on the subject.
While the book is easy to read, it seems to offer no new information that is not readily available in other books or on the internet. Gates seems to favor certain foods and products, such as coconut water kefir, yet fails to thoroughly justify her preference for them, and supports her claims with little scientific research. However, her section on the same subject does offer an excellent guide on making the coconut water kefir, which serves as one of the few saving graces of this book.
This brings me to one of the biggest gripes I have with Body Ecology Diet. Throughout the book are references to her website for more information. Unfortunately, the website fails to thoroughly expound on any of the topics in her book, and instead bombards visitors with a myriad of products that are touted as miracle cures to everything from Attention Deficit Disorder and Autism to Sexual Dysfunction. Of course, a majority of these products are sold either through her own storefront or through affiliate sites, earning her a hefty profit. While this review is about Gates' book, not her website, it is made relevant by the numerous times that the book refers readers to it, instructing them to purchase some product that is necessary if you want to follow her diet. In other words, don't expect to be able to follow Gates' version of the Candida diet without purchasing items from her storefront, or a well-stocked health food store.
I do not mean for this review to turn people off of a diet that targets Candida. It is simply that other books, such as Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats, offer much more information, back it up with more hard evidence, and more importantly, do not require you to purchase more products from the author. Candidiasis is a real condition, and ridding yourself of it will bring about real improvements in your energy level and weight, among other things. It is just that Gates' work feels like a shallow and self-promoting rehash of currently available information. The most important thing when finding a book on the subject is finding one that works well for you. Therefore, I recommend readers look for a book written with passion that truly moves you to follow its advice. While this book's approach may work for some, I found myself wanting more.
