Covers an important topic, but lacks substance 3 out of 5 stars.
16 of 20 people found this review helpful.

It seems that in most cases that nonfiction authors are motivated by one of two things when creating their works. Some feel that they have some sort of information that needs sharing, and use books as a way to get their word out. These authors have a true passion for their topic, which clearly shows when reading their books. Others are driven purely by profit. Sadly, it seems that the latter is true of Donna Gates and her Body Ecology Diet. Though this book does cover an important topic, it lacks substance and fails to deliver. However, it may be a good source for someone used to only mainstream health books and wanting a simple primer on the subject.
While the book is easy to read, it seems to offer no new information that is not readily available in other books or on the internet. Gates seems to favor certain foods and products, such as coconut water kefir, yet fails to thoroughly justify her preference for them, and supports her claims with little scientific research. However, her section on the same subject does offer an excellent guide on making the coconut water kefir, which serves as one of the few saving graces of this book.
This brings me to one of the biggest gripes I have with Body Ecology Diet. Throughout the book are references to her website for more information. Unfortunately, the website fails to thoroughly expound on any of the topics in her book, and instead bombards visitors with a myriad of products that are touted as miracle cures to everything from Attention Deficit Disorder and Autism to Sexual Dysfunction. Of course, a majority of these products are sold either through her own storefront or through affiliate sites, earning her a hefty profit. While this review is about Gates' book, not her website, it is made relevant by the numerous times that the book refers readers to it, instructing them to purchase some product that is necessary if you want to follow her diet. In other words, don't expect to be able to follow Gates' version of the Candida diet without purchasing items from her storefront, or a well-stocked health food store.
I do not mean for this review to turn people off of a diet that targets Candida. It is simply that other books, such as Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats, offer much more information, back it up with more hard evidence, and more importantly, do not require you to purchase more products from the author. Candidiasis is a real condition, and ridding yourself of it will bring about real improvements in your energy level and weight, among other things. It is just that Gates' work feels like a shallow and self-promoting rehash of currently available information. The most important thing when finding a book on the subject is finding one that works well for you. Therefore, I recommend readers look for a book written with passion that truly moves you to follow its advice. While this book's approach may work for some, I found myself wanting more.

Really? 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I was surprised that this book was copyrighted in 1998. It seems that we have just now caught up with what she knew back then about essential fatty acids. That part of the book is very good and I am glad that we have finally caught up with her on this.

I haven't tried any of her recipes but I it seems that many of the recipes do not follow her traditional Greek way of cooking. I mean canola oil, for instance, certainly is not a part of traditional cooking anywhere. It is a relatively modern phenomena. She also uses white sugar and white flour in some of her recipes. Come on! These things were not part of the traditional Greek diet. And, really, do you think they used low-fat dairy products. Give us a break!

Editorial Review:

Is it really possible that eating more fat is the key to better health? It depends on the fat, according to Dr. Artemis Simopoulos. The Omega Plan shows, in great detail, the difference between omega-3 fats, those found in fish and some green vegetables, and omega-6 fats, which are found in most meats and vegetable oils. The former have heart-protective and cancer-preventive properties; the latter, she writes, cause obesity, heart disease, cancer, depression, and a host of other ills. Omega-3 fats are at the heart of her plan, along with ample servings of fruits and vegetables. Unlike diets based on deprivation, Simopoulos offers some fairly lush food choices, including an ounce of cheese every day. Best of all, The Omega Plan is bursting with so much useful information about food shopping and preparation that you'll be able to use its advice the second you put the book down.

Terrible cookbook if you're actually following the GI Diet 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I started following the GI Diet (Rick Gallop's book in case there are other versions). I'm not crazy about all of his recipes, so I wanted to get another cookbook that would give me some additional recipes that I could use while on the diet. The cover of "The Low GI Diet Cookbook" even says "The World's Foremost Authorities on the Glycemic Index". Hah! As I flip through the pages, every recipe that calls for a sweetener uses honey, maple syrup, sugar, brown sugar, and even confectioner's sugar! There aren't even any conversion charts on how to substitute with agave nectar, stevia, or xylitol. My biggest gripe is with the sweets, but I'm not thrilled that many other recipes call for non-green-light ingredients.

Editorial Review:

Based on the healthy low-GI eating principles established in The Low GI Diet Revolution, New York Times bestselling authors Jennie Brand-Miller and Kaye Foster-Powell, along with Joanna McMillan-Price, offer readers a companion cookbook packed with 100 delicious recipes that incorporate the top 100 low-GI foods. Fiber does help you lose weight 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Thin people know fiber does help you lose weight. Diabetics know that they need fiber along with fruits. No more juice, eat the fruit with the fiber in it or blend it in a blender. Fiber slows down the glycemic load, or to say another way... it slows down the sugar in your body and doesn't spike it. That's hard on everyone especially diabetics. Fiber is a bit of a carb blocker, but it is natural and doesn't have the other bad effects that carb blockers may prove to have in the future. This book also explains how eating often every 2-3 hours tiny meals with fiber will help rev. up the metabolism. Who can't use that! Get more fiber. It is easy. So many products on the market. And get rid of the overprocessed carbs. the bad ones. The white breads, white rices etc. This book will help you understand how fiber helps everyone.

Pretty Good Info 3 out of 5 stars.

I enjoyed the information. I am already doing weight training, cardio, and 6 meals a day as Tom Venuto recommends at www.burnthefat.com . I bought some fiber choice fiber wafers at Sam's Club for cheap and I eat a few Kashi Bars each day. I am up to 40 grams a day of fiber and it does help keep everything regular.

I watched her video on PBS.

Editorial Review:

The first cookbook from best-selling author Jonny Bowden!

Jonny Bowden's The Healthiest Meals on Earth contains recipes for more than sixty dishes and drinks that use nutritious and healthy cooking methods. Forty of these dishes will combine to create ten different "poly-meals", specially crafted meals that contain key nutrients found to promote long-term health. They include Sweet and Thai Spicy Shrimp and Fruits, Persian Chicken with Autumnal Accompaniments, and the "iron booster" of Tender Calf's Liver and Sweet Beets. A "Healthiest Holiday Meal" features Citrus Stuffed Turkey, Zippy Fruit Salsa, and Sweet Potato Pie. The poly-meals are designed to be eaten three-to-five times a week.

Another ten recipes are not part of the poly-meal structure; instead they are one-pot meals that include Slow-Cooker Chicken Curry, Miso Bean Soup, and Venison Stew. A chapter on drinks will include nutritious smoothies, so-called "green drinks", and others. Jonny will provide healthy cooking tips throughout the book, as well as an analysis of the foods in each recipe. Side dishes, such as Cold Strawberry Soup and Veggie Slaw with Flax Oil, and desserts, such as Raw Chocolate Fondue, are also featured.

This book pairs well with Bowden's successful 150 Healthiest Foods, and can even be used as a companion cookbook.

Incredible info in a small package! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

You have to read a certain section of this sometimes boring narrative to get the awesome part - what giving up sugar CURED! I believe the author should have given the shocker first, then followed up with dry facts that the reader needs.

I've given copies of this book to five people who I care about!

Good Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a good book with a good message. Nowadays, it is becoming more and more clear why sugar is bad for you. It is because of the fructose part of sucrose (sucrose is half fructose and half glucose). Excessive fructose is extremely unhealthy for many reasons - it raises uric acid, taxes the liver, raises triglycerides, causes insulin resistance - raising insulin levels in the long run. And it does this very fast in studies.

I eliminated sucrose and HCFS from my diet with the help of this book but it wasn't until I eliminated fruit juice, dried fruits and sweet fruits that my health really improved. The problem according to the latest research is mainly fructose.

Common HCFS and sucrose are very similar in that they are both about half fructose (HCFS usually is 55% fructose). The difference is that HCFS, being so cheap and stable, is added to everything, and portions are also much larger than in the past, so we are consuming more and more of it - getting that dose of fructose. In addition, we are bombarded with the messge to consume lots of fruits - yet, in many of the healthiest traditional diets studied, fruit consumption, if any, seems to be a very minor part of the diet.
