Overall this book/journal does what it advertises - provides a convienant way to keep track of your food intake. I wish the front & back cover were a little more discreet though - I don't need everyone to know that I'm tracking my food intake!

While I knew that recording my calorie intake and expenditure daily would help me to lose weight, I could never get into the habit of it. Online journals weren't portable, and plain notebooks took too much work to make daily columns and pages. I needed something that I could take with me everywhere that fit in my purse. This is perfect. Not only does it allow you to portably record calories fat and carbs, but it also has a mini calorie reference section in the back, and an informational section in the front that helps you create realistic goals for yourself. It also has charts and graphs that you fill in at the end of each week to see how you're doing.

I highly recommend this booklet.

Pocket book for the supermarket 5 out of 5 stars.

This purse-size book is indespensible! It lists total carbs, fiber, net carbs, protein, fat, and calories to help you make the best choices, or even endulge a little while knowing how much you are doing so!

My copy is dog-eared and I carry it everywhere with me. When I think I might want something (like grapes, for example), I can look them up in the booklet right there in the supermarket and decide if they will fit into my diet plan or not. (The grapes were too high in carbs, in case you were wondering.)

The book also lists many common and name brand items, both high and low carb.

It is split into several sections such as beverages; milk, cream, butter, and yogurt; breads, muffins and crackers; fruit; pancakes, waffles, and breakfast pastries; poultry; sweeteners, jams, and syrups; etc.

It even has a section for "dining out" with tips on dining away from home, and a "fast food" section with counts for popular foods at fast food restaurants.

If you are watching either your fat or your carbs, you need this book!

Dr. Atkins' New Carbohydrate Gram Counter has a slightly misleading name. While grams of carbohydrate are listed for various foods, there are also protein and fat grams listed for each entry. With more than 1,200 listings, including hundreds of brand-name products, this makes a handy, portable reference. It should be noted, however, that that the Gram Counter is really meant as a companion to Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution; the brief dietary information included in the introduction to the Gram Counter isn't of much use by itself.

3 Hour Diet is Better 3 out of 5 stars.

I decided to check this book out at the library since I had heard so much about it lately. I wanted to review it before buying. I tried the meal plan for a few days and couldn't take it anymore. These meals definately take a lot longer to prepare than 5 minutes! They require a lot of shopping as well. I agree with some of the other reviews that the meals are not well balanced either. The 3 Hour Diet, which is basically the same eating regiman, has much better recipes and also teaches you how to eat normal, everyday food, even when eating out or short on time. I lost 35 pounds on the 3 Hour Plan a few years ago and have kept it off. I had to stop running about 9 months ago due to tendonitis and gained about 10 pounds, so I was looking for some new inspiration.
That being said, I am going to try the workout plan since the short time frame (25 minutes) works well in my day. It also looks like exercises that I am familiar with and can do without going to the gym.

Here are a few excerpts that convinced me that this book is way off base.

For starters, the book's disclaimer: "The information in this book is given strictly for educational and research purposes. The author and publisher do not prescribe or recommend, and assume no responsibility. In no way should this information be considered a substitute for competent health care by the professional of your choice. In the event you use this information without your doctor's approval, you are prescribing for yourself, with is your constitutional right."

p. 57: "An alcoholic is one who takes more than one drink of anything on a daily basis". That gave me a good laugh.

p. 63: "The destructive emotion of slaughter is assimilated by one who eats flesh".

p. 67-8 cites an unnamed "study" from the "turn of the century" of people in northern Europe that lived over 100 years, stating "many of these lived up to 200 years". Many of the same people in the study had bad diet and were drunkards but they all ate food in moderation as their key to longevity. Umm, this contradicts the argument against alcohol from p.57.

p. 109 "To avoid sunburn is foolish" Oh really, what would my dermatologist think?

p. 115 "Red meat is red because it is dyed. The dye is a petroleum product..." There is some truth to this on meats that have hit their expiration date, but -- red meat is red because it is red.

In retrospect the disclaimer should have read "Rather than forming decisions based on decades of medical research using proven protocols including clinical trials, the opinions provided in this book are drawn from the latest trends in alternative medicines with no scientific basis. After reading this book, please go to my website to buy my products."

Time to go barbecue a pork shoulder.

Being one of the millions of obese people out there, I saw this book at the library and picked it up... Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir By Jennette Fulda. I can't say that I knew about her beforehand from her writing [..] But after reading Half-Assed, I'll be adding her to my blogroll and re-examining my own weight issues.

Contents: A History of Fatness; Living Large; The Snooze Button; No Epiphanies; Diet and Exercise; Stumbling Blocks; The Incredible Shrinking Woman; The Girl in the Mirror; Too Small for My Britches; Two Weddings and a Funeral; Trail Mix; I Should Know Better By Now; My Online Waistline; Acquired Tastes; Decloaking; Half-Assed; The Secret; Killing the Fat Girl; Notes; Acknowledgments; About the Author "Before" and "After"

Fulda doesn't set out to write a book about her weight-loss program or some secret formula she discovered. This is nothing but a raw look at the pain and realities of being fat, and the struggles she had in losing over half her body weight. And in my opinion, that's why this book works so well. The celebrity weight-loss winners all seem to want to "sell" you on their methodology and program. Fulda doesn't go into any great detail about what to eat, how much to eat, exercise programs, and the like. You learn her fears and self-loathing as she climbs to over 360 pounds. You're listening to her live through the fits and starts of finally getting traction on her weight loss goals. And more importantly, you also experience her ups and downs over the many months that it took to get to her current half-Fulda state. I enjoyed watching her mindset change as she went from someone who she felt didn't deserve any attention to someone who knows what it's like to be "normal". She's brutally raw in her writing style, and she doesn't pull any punches about the difficulties involved in making such a radical change to your body. It's also refreshing to see her current attitude towards her body. She's still at a point where the charts would say she's "chubby", but she also is comfortable with that knowing from where she started her journey. It's nice to see a weight loss story that doesn't end with the person becoming supermodel-thin and a fitness magazine covergirl. Fulda is no different than you and me... Flawed, imperfect, but working away on life.

If you're looking for a "do this, this, and this" book, head elsewhere (or go over to her blog). But if you want to understand and experience life through the eyes of someone who's been there and is still working at doing that, read away.
