I enjoy this really cute and quirky book, it's unlike anything you can find online, and it's neat to see what your favorite elites eat. And it benefits a great cause!

I can imagine, in the big corporate publishing cubicles, someone saying, "We need a cookbook for runners. What athletes' pictures can we put next to these recipes?" And that's nothing whatever like The Runner's Cookbook, which might be the most honest cookbook you'll meet about runners. It's a hundred-plus pages of athletes telling us about their favorite "real" food (one recipe by an Olympian who will remain un-named by me includes the instructions, "follow the directions on the box", and another recipe is purposefully vague about how much of a bottle of beer goes in the recipe and how much is consumed by the cook). The athletes included range from Olympic medalists and national record holders all over the world (at least two former World Record holders that I remember) to American up-and-comers.

The proceeds go to the Jenny Crain Make It Happen fund and the Ryan Shay Memorial Fund, but that shouldn't be the reason you get the book; it's just evidence that the editor was more interested in sharing this book than lining her pocket. You could write those organizations a check. Get the book because it's worth it, and see a side of professional athletes you otherwise might not.

Though your taste buds might have to readjust a bit, Dr. Phil promises that you won't find "skimpy diet-type meals that taste like wallpaper paste," nor will you have to fix separate meals for non-dieting family members. If you need structure, his "rapid start" 14-day menu plan, averaging 1200 calories/day, will get you going. You'll find updates of familiar classics with Huevos Rancheros, BLT (using turkey bacon or meatless bacon and light mayo), No-Fry Chicken-Fried Steak, Southern Oven-Fried Chicken (Grape-Nuts and egg white batter), Mac and Cheese, Guacamole (with tofu), and Three Bean Chili. Or explore new tastes with Curried Tabbouleh, Moroccan Chicken, Halibut Baked in Packets, and Asian Tofu Stew. The book contains good ideas and a break down of all calories in a given meal. Some of the recipes seem a little banal.Others are pretty good.

I bought this book because of good reviews, BUT when I finally had a chance to read the book and check out the recipes, I was highly disappointed. The author listed ingredients, a sweetener, that is not readily available.

By reading a recipe and its ingredients, I can normally tell whether the dish is going to be good, with this cookbook, I just don't see it.

I've tried the Lemon custard, it was unedible!

Most of my dessert recipes are Julia Child-style rich, but I recently got this book from the library to see how well I could make low-fat, whole-wheat baking work (I've been baking since I was 8 and use mostly my own recipes). Yesterday I made my usual white flour, high-fat, high-sugar banana bread for my entire office, which everyone loved. Today I made the whole wheat Brown Sugar Banana Bread from the bread section of this cookbook, without the nuts, and the ENTIRE office is raving about it! Everyone ate both kinds and declared this one just as good, if not better. I also got a number of her other cookbooks and have been VERY impressed with the recipes. Definitely a must-have for any kitchen.

I found this book to be very informative and helpful. It is an excellent basic guide to begin getting adjusted to DFI. There are basically no resources available for this fairly newly diagnosed disease, and this book provides some insights, "food for thought", and areas that I am exploring to see what pertains to me and what not. There can be no resource that pertains to everyone, so this provides some direction in terms of what to look for, options that may work for me, and symptoms that I might not have recognized as related to DFI. I have tried several of the recipes so far and have enjoyed many. I believe that others will find this a very useful reference book.
