Full of good, practical recipies 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I own a lot of cookbooks... but I've never had one quite like this. This is the first cookbook where I look through the recipies, and think "Hey - I should make that some time" for most of the recipies. Other cookbooks seem to be literally filled with recipies that either don't look any good, or require exotic ingredients only availble to people in major metropolitan centers.

With this cookbook, however, I flip through the pages wishing i had time to make almost all of the 900 recipies. I've made about 20 things out of this book now, and have enjoyed almost all of them a lot.

Pros:
- Contains a good, detailed introduction for the novice cook, including information on herbs, cooking methods, etc.
- Contains almost 900 recipies that you can actually make and enjoy.
- Has recipies from almost every category - breads, meats, desserts, soups, etc.
- I totally disagree with the person who said the layout is lousy . I've never had trouble finding anything in this book.
- The recipies, while not being extremely low fat, *are* from cooking light, and hence are healthier in general than most other cookbooks. Plus, the recipies don't ever seem to sacrifice flavor for a *light* rating.

Cons:
- You'll spend longer in the kitchen trying to make more of these

Sorry - I don't really have a good con for this book :)

If you love too cook - you'll love this book!

Great cookbook for the whole family 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

My husband had to loss a couple pounds for a new job he was trying to get hired for and I decided that I would join him, cause hey what girl doesn't want to shed a little extra weight. We have two young boys, 6 and 2 years, and were worried that if we statred dieting they would be effected. Long story short, rather then trying fad diets or premade meals, we decided it would be best to just change the way we eat to something healthier, which is what lead us to the Dieters Cookbook.

Its wounderful, so far between the two of us, we have lost 20 pounds in three weeks. Now its not all the cook book, we do have a cross trainer at home, a weight bench and two young ones that keep us moving. But the cookbook gives me a great place to find easy to make, healthy meals, that even taste good. (For the boys, we just give them an adult portionand let them eat as much as they like, this allows us not to worry about harming their growth.)The two week jump off menu is also a great tool, even if you don't follow it, it allows you an example of how to plan your meals. And planning has been our best friend, nolonger does it turn 7 o'clock at night and we end up running to pick something up cause, A) we didn't have anything ready to eat or b) there was nothing in the house to make something. I work often into the late afternoon, early night and have found several recipes that I can make ahead and leave just mini notes for my husband to finish up. For example, tonight we'll be having turkey burgers w/ cranberry dressing and oven baked french fries, everyhting is made up in the fridge, all hubbie has to do is put the fries in the oven and place the burgers on the grill, walla healthy easy and no McDonalds, Burgerking or Wendy's needed.

This cookbook, is not a mericale diet, it wont garentee you have the same success as my spouse and I, but it is a great tool, even if you just want a cookbook around with healthy low fat meals in it for when you feel the urge to cook something outside a box. But don't take my word for it, try it and see what you think.

Rice Diet 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This diet really works for me. I love pasta and rice. I lost 20 pounds in one and a half months and I didn't feel deprived. I have since slipped a few times but it is very easy to get back on the right track.

Editorial Review:

The New York Times bestseller. Before Atkins, before the low-carb craze, before counting calories, there was the Rice Diet Program.

Founded by a pioneering Duke University physician in 1939, the Rice Diet Program has been helping dieters lose weight quickly, successfully, and permanently. Now, this world-renowned, medicallyapproved weight-loss method can help everyone across the world--and not just those who travel to Durham, North Carolina.

The Program offers a high-complex-carb, low-fat, and low-sodium diet that sheds excess body fat at an astounding rate. On average, men lost 28 to 30 pounds per month, and women lost 19 to 20 pounds per month. The diet also cleanses the body of water bloat and toxins, and has been seen to help with such chronic health problems as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Included are hundreds of delicious, easy-to-fix recipes.

Editorial Review:

Everybody loves dessert, but nobody loves the calories. Perfect Light Desserts offers recipes for desserts rich enough to satisfy any sweet tooth -- but with sensible calorie counts.

Master baker Nick Malgieri and healthful food expert David Joachim have joined forces to create 125 exceptional desserts without the usual quantities of fats and sugars. The focus is on flavor and texture achieved through balanced ingredient combinations and superior baking techniques. Not a single recipe has more than 300 calories per serving.

The results are nothing short of spectacular, with desserts that range from devil's food cake (complete with fluffy icing) to a lemon custard highlighted with a colorful raspberry sauce. Old-fashioned American favorites such as hermits mingle with sophisticated treats like rum raisin semifreddo and white chocolate raspberry tartlets. Best of all, while these desserts are low-calorie, they are high in flavor. Moist coconut poppy seed coffee cake, juicy blueberry pie, and fudgy brownies don't taste like “diet desserts”; they simply taste great.

All of the recipes here achieve great flavor without resorting to artificial sweeteners or synthetic substitutes. The recipes use moderate amounts of real butter, sugar, flour, and eggs in perfect proportions. Every recipe includes a complete nutritional analysis as well as serving and storage notes. Everybody loves dessert, and now no one has to go without it.

Great taste, low calorie, easy preparation 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 28 people found this review helpful.

Have tried quite a few recipes and no disappointments. Always a pleasant surprise with so few ingredients and so few calories. Highly recommended for working people with little time and gourmet taste who are trying to eat healthy.

the quick stir chocolate cake is always a hit and no eggs! 5 out of 5 stars.

I love the simplicity of this book and I always have the ingredients on hand.

Nasty! 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I tried maybe 10 recipes in this book, and they were all horrible. On a positive note, I can say that the recipes make huge portions on extremely little money, so this would be a great depression cookbook. The very worst were the sauces, with "Sauerbraten Sauce" taking the cake for the most disgusting. A hot dog, mac & cheese, and jello is a cheap meal too, and tastes a whole lot better than anything in this book. Also, even though these recipes are low fat, they are not low calorie as they are loaded with sugar (for example, "Kix" bar cookies (Kix cereal and TONS of white Karo...not something that would work for your average dieter). I had this book for 1 month and threw it away.

Eat like the elites, run like the elites 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I enjoy this really cute and quirky book, it's unlike anything you can find online, and it's neat to see what your favorite elites eat. And it benefits a great cause!

Not your usual cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

I can imagine, in the big corporate publishing cubicles, someone saying, "We need a cookbook for runners. What athletes' pictures can we put next to these recipes?" And that's nothing whatever like The Runner's Cookbook, which might be the most honest cookbook you'll meet about runners. It's a hundred-plus pages of athletes telling us about their favorite "real" food (one recipe by an Olympian who will remain un-named by me includes the instructions, "follow the directions on the box", and another recipe is purposefully vague about how much of a bottle of beer goes in the recipe and how much is consumed by the cook). The athletes included range from Olympic medalists and national record holders all over the world (at least two former World Record holders that I remember) to American up-and-comers.

The proceeds go to the Jenny Crain Make It Happen fund and the Ryan Shay Memorial Fund, but that shouldn't be the reason you get the book; it's just evidence that the editor was more interested in sharing this book than lining her pocket. You could write those organizations a check. Get the book because it's worth it, and see a side of professional athletes you otherwise might not.

Editorial Review:

The Runner's Cookbook includes 100 recipes submitted by some of the world's greatest distance runners. The book contains recipes that can be used for maximizing performance and recovery, as well as recipes for simply indulging yourself after a hard training session. All of the proceeds from this book will be donated to the Ryan Shay Memorial Fund and the Jenny Crain "Make It Happen" Fund.
