Title is good... NOT as good as a cookbook! 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because of good reviews, BUT when I finally had a chance to read the book and check out the recipes, I was highly disappointed. The author listed ingredients, a sweetener, that is not readily available.

By reading a recipe and its ingredients, I can normally tell whether the dish is going to be good, with this cookbook, I just don't see it.

I've tried the Lemon custard, it was unedible!

Better Homes & Gardens New Dieter's Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I lost a total of 100 pounds in 5 months by using the delicious recipes in this book. The food is tasty, easy to prepare, and satisfying. The variety of foods from the traditional to the more exotic or ethnic gives the range of choice often missing in "diet" books. I have purchased this book as a gift for several friends who have also found it enjoyable.

The whole office can't be wrong! 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 26 people found this review helpful.

Most of my dessert recipes are Julia Child-style rich, but I recently got this book from the library to see how well I could make low-fat, whole-wheat baking work (I've been baking since I was 8 and use mostly my own recipes). Yesterday I made my usual white flour, high-fat, high-sugar banana bread for my entire office, which everyone loved. Today I made the whole wheat Brown Sugar Banana Bread from the bread section of this cookbook, without the nuts, and the ENTIRE office is raving about it! Everyone ate both kinds and declared this one just as good, if not better. I also got a number of her other cookbooks and have been VERY impressed with the recipes. Definitely a must-have for any kitchen.

Editorial Review:

In her nine previous cookbook bestsellers, Sandra Woodruff proved that fat-free cooking is as easy and delicious as it is nutritious. Now, in a book that's destined to become the kitchen bible for health- conscious cooks everywhere, she's collected all of her best fat-free and low-fat recipes in a single volume.

Each of these recipes is a winner - a table-tested favorite that will please even the pickiest eaters. From Creamy Mushroom Soup to Chocolate Cherry Tunnel Cake, this is the only cookbook people need for a lifetime of healthy eating.

Editorial Review:

Let Good Housekeeping hold your hand, guiding you as you prepare tasty diet-friendly meals! Remember: people who eat at home tend to be thinner than those who eat out often. Even those who don’t feel comfortable in the kitchen can easily make these recipes, which have all been triple-tested in the magazine’s acclaimed kitchens. Most of the recipes take no more than 20 minutes from stove to table—less time than picking up calorie-laden take-out. And they’re also nutritious, so they not only help you drop pounds, but also could lower the risks for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other ailments.
But of course, vitamins and minerals don’t lure dieters to the table: taste does, and these dishes are absolutely delicious. Meals such as Asparagus, Red Potato, and Romano Frittata; Salmon with Tomato-Oliver Relish; Steak and Pepper Tortillas, and Tortellini with Zucchini and Radicchio are as palate-pleasing as they are weight-reducing. And leave room for desserts like Apricot Soufflé and Seattle Cappuccino Angel Food Cake.
Both veterans of the plan and newcomers will find this cookbook—which summarizes all the Supermarket Diet basics—invaluable!

Editorial Review:

Eat good food, drink a little wine, lose weight! Sounds too good to be true? Not with The Wine and Food Lover's Diet. Created by a sports doctor with a background in nutrition, this is a diet that combines healthful eating with a love of eating. Imagine a meal of bacon-topped arugula salad, pecan-crusted chicken paired with the perfect glass of wine, and closing with chocolate soufflé or some ice cream and a cup of coffee—and then, even better, looking at the decrease on the scales the next morning. Dr. Phillip Tirman's 28-day plan sheds the pounds and the diet angst. He knows that most diets fail because they're based on restricting the foods everyone loves the most and they're impractical for today's busy lifestyles. So he has developed a lifetime eating plan based on satisfaction, not deprivation. The key to feeling slimmer and healthier? It's the surefire combo that is the foundation of the diet: one protein + two low-glycemic carbs = success. Using this formula, Dr. Tirman has created a menu plan to jump-start weight loss. He clearly and simply describes why high-glycemic carbs promote weight gain, while low-glycemic carbs do the opposite. Included are handy lists of beneficial Savvy Carbs and Super Savvy Carbs, which make it easy to tailor the diet to anyone's tastes—plus 100 really delicious recipes with wine pairing suggestions, illustrated in full color. There's also clear advice for choosing take-out foods, for selecting diet-friendly restaurant dishes, and for using the diet to lose weight or simply to keep off the pounds already lost. The Wine and Food Lover's Diet is the ultimate key to a healthier, fuller, longer, and more satisfying life.

Living with Dietary Frucetose Intolerance 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be very informative and helpful. It is an excellent basic guide to begin getting adjusted to DFI. There are basically no resources available for this fairly newly diagnosed disease, and this book provides some insights, "food for thought", and areas that I am exploring to see what pertains to me and what not. There can be no resource that pertains to everyone, so this provides some direction in terms of what to look for, options that may work for me, and symptoms that I might not have recognized as related to DFI. I have tried several of the recipes so far and have enjoyed many. I believe that others will find this a very useful reference book.

Excellent Guide to Little Know Diagnosis 5 out of 5 stars.

Usability 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I just purchased the Atkins' New Diet Cookbook and have perused it briefly. However, without having started using the recipes, I have some suggestions to the author as to how to improve the usability.
1. All recipes should be for the same number of servings. It is easy to double or triple for more servings.
2. The page number should be included (rather than an asterisk indicating that the recipe is in the back of the book). I spent several hours locating the recipe and writing the page number by the meal plan. This before I even started considering cooking!
3. Little effort was made to make the recipes cost effective. By that I mean, in the first two weeks, many ingredients are perishable but used only one time and small amounts required--such as 4 strawberries!
5. Too much effort to make recipes exotic when more normal and available (also less expensive)ingredients would make the diet easier to manage and still maintain the low carbs.

Alternative flour education! 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This book is an excellent one for baking if your child has an allergy to wheat. My child cannot tolerate kamut and spelt, which the author uses often, but the author almost always gives a list of 4 or 5 different flours that will also work with each recipe. And, she will make note, for example, if more or less liquid is called for if you use a different flour. If an egg is called for, she'll also give you a substitute. Very thorough. I've read a bazillion food allergy cookbooks, and this one by far is the most flexible.
