Betty Crocker is on the health bandwagon. Not one for fads, Betty sensibly bases this 175-recipe cookbook on the Food Guide Pyramid guidelines recommended by the American Heart Association and many other medical and nutrition professional organizations. You learn tips for cutting down on fat and cholesterol, understanding the different kinds of fat, and making smart food choices for heart health. The idea is to reduce fat by making ingredient substitutions and small alterations, but not making drastic changes. The recipes are varied and creative and don't resemble "diet food": Ginger Shrimp Kabobs, Vegetable Potstickers, Stuffed Veal Chops with Cider Sauce, Vegetable and Ham Jambalaya, Curried Chicken and Nectarines, Caribbean Fish Salad, and Thai Shrimp and Rice Noodle Nests. The desserts include Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake with Raspberry Topping (only 20 percent fat!), Blueberry-Lime Torte (about 15 percent fat), and Double Chocolate-Date Cake (about 25 percent fat). Recipes are labeled with symbols indicating "low-calorie," "low-fat," "moderate-fat," "low-cholesterol," and "moderate-cholesterol," so you can choose how far you want to go. Each recipe has a hefty amount of nutritional information: calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrate, fiber, protein, vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, and diet exchanges. This book is a godsend! With easy-to-find grocery items and step-by-step instructions it is foolproof! So far, everything I have made has passed the taste test in my home (2 adults and 2 kids under 4) with flying colors. I am encouraged to continue using this book because it has so many useful tips and everything is so healthy for me and my family (even the breakfast cookies). I liked it so much I bought a copy for my sister.

I have plenty of Cook Books, but this one by far exceeds all others. The tips it includes to keep you healthy are worth it alone. You will enjoy the way the book is designed to open up and sit on your counter when your looking to it as you cook. Easy, fun and healthy recipies. Enjoy!

After my husband had a mild heart attack and was in Cardiac rehab, we had an opportunity to talk with a nutritionist to help us out with a healthy eating plan. I asked her for a recommendation of books that would give me ideas for meals and help with calculating fat, cholesterol and fiber, and she selected this off of her bookshelf. I looked through it at home that night and ordered the book immediately! It has great simple recipes, easy to follow, common ingredients, and the calculations are all available with the recipe. It is a great help with selecting meals low in fat and cholesterol. Everything we have tried has been very good! Don't even hesitate to buy it!

One of the reasons I bought this book was for the list of foods. I can make no sense of his values for glycemic load because they are different from all others I have seen by a factor of 10! If I could know that for sure, i.e . the multiplier, then I could use the list. But as it is, the list is useless. The book is otherwise fine for someone who has not been obsessively researching this topic as I have been for the last month. If you are already conversant on the topic, save your money. If I had seen the book in a store before I ordered it, I would not have bought it.

Great cookbook for those with egg or nut allergies 4 out of 5 stars.

My 3 year old son is allergic to eggs as well as peanuts and tree nuts. Although I have found some recipes I like, and most importantly he likes, I struggled to find cake recipes that tasted great, were moist, and didn't sink. My cake frustration ended when I tried some recipes from this cookbook. I made the Silver White Cake with buttercream icing for his recent 3rd birthday party and everyone loved it. It looked great and tasted great. Also, many of the recipes in this book give you the option for adding or not including nuts. I've made a few of the cookie recipes and they've all turned out well too.

This was my first Dana Carpenter book. I had already been introduced to the low carb way of eating, but Dana's book makes it so much more interesting! Her humor and healthy tips inspire me to be faithful. The variety of recipes expand my menu ideas considerably, and also are a springboard for recipes of my own creation.

Because I liked this book so much, I also bought Volume 1 of "500 Recipes" cookbook for myself and 3 others. This second volume, however, is my favorite. I also just purchased Dana's "How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost 40 LBS." book, and am enjoying it very much, which I heartily recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about lo carb eating, and also to those who need motivation to continue. It is full of excellent health info.

If you need new recipe ideas, or instruction on how to eat low carb, Dana provides it all in a fun and interesting way. Dana is a great mentor on the path of a low carb lifestyle!
