Straightforward, TASTY recipes; many more than you get in the basic book 5 out of 5 stars.
33 of 33 people found this review helpful.

I was very surprised to see the other review for this book, but then I saw the line about the person NOT owning it. I preordered this book, and like the other reviewer, felt that the recipes would be the same...however, I forgot to cancel the preorder, so lo and behold, it arrived at my house in mid-December. This has become my FAVORITE diet cookbook! Unlike the South Beach Diet cookbooks, which contained laundry lists of ingredients and yielded usually unflavorful dishes, the Alli Cookbook contains (1) many, many more recipes than are found in the main book--250 pages of recipe text alone, (2) food for a large variety of tastes including vegetarian, (3) carefully thought out and easy to prepare dishes, (4) creative and interestingly seasoned dishes, and (5) dishes you would never think you would find in a diet cookbook. I am somewhat of a picky eater when it comes to "healthy foods" and I was still able to find dozens of recipes to suit my tastes. The bottom line is that this cookbook has helped me succeed on the Alli plan by adding needed variety and easy-to-cook dishes to my meal plan -- so much so, that even when I get busy and forget to take the pills for several days, I still lose weight and almost never feel deprived. I don't think I would be at the point in the diet with the recipes in the Alli Diet Plan book alone, and I credit this cookbook. (Since starting the diet in mid-November, I've lost 15 pounds, even with some cheating around the holidays, and I'm within 10 pounds of my overall goal.) If you want to enhance your chance for success on the Alli plan and want to enjoy some really flavorful dishes, you need to add this book to your Alli toolkit!

Editorial Review:

alli(r) (60 mg orlistat) is the only FDA-approved over the counter weight loss aid for overweight adults. When used with a low-fat, reduced-calorie diet it can help you lose more weight than with dieting alone. The alli(r) Cookbook is full of delicious choices to make each meal enjoyable. Each recipe is designed to fit the nutrition guidelines recommended for use with the alli(tm) program. And for those nights when you want a break from cooking, the book includes a tear-out restaurant guide.

The all(r) Cookbook includes:

  • More than 200 recipes and meal plans specifically designed to work with the alli(r) program

  • A variety of options for main dishes, sides, and desserts

  • Special menus and recipes for year-round celebrations

  • Detailed nutrition information for each complete meal

Don't believe the book's title! 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

First the bad news: This book's title is an outright lie and should be changed (or the book's content changed to fulfill the title's promises). It claims to contain 350 recipes that are free of common allergens including gluten, soy, milk, etc. This is completely untrue. A large percentage of these recipes contain at least one of these allergens, usually with no options provided for substitutions. Particularly of note is the extensive use of items with hidden gluten and soy. People newly diagnosed with allergies may not realize that many of the ingredients contain these allergens and the recipes are not labeled to let you know. In spite of the claim to be milk-free, there is a whole section dedicated to milk-based recipes (using goat milk, perhaps, but still a problem for most of us). Ironically, she mentions that beef recipes were left out of the book because some people might be sensitive (although it's not one of the allergens the book claims to be free of). Obviously gluten is a much more common allergen and harder to substitute for than beef so it seems that which ingredients are included is more arbitrary than based on the needs of the allergy-prone. Since most gluten-free cookbooks contain large amounts of other allergens (like dairy, corn, or soy) I was really hoping for a cookbook that wouldn't require me to make massive substitutions.

For people with nut allergies (which I don't have), this is probably the wrong book for you, skip it.

In spite of all this (and the warnings posted here, thanks, everyone, for that!), I decided to take a look at the book since there are so few options for people like me with multiple allergies. Although the fact that the title is grossly misleading made me angry enough that I didn't want to buy the book, I finally decided that there was enough good information to make it worthwhile. The first thing I did was go through the book and cross out all the recipes that contained gluten, wheat, soy, dairy, and corn (my biggest allergies and the hardest to substitute for). There were MANY!

Finally, the good: There is a lot of good information in this book (tempered with some bad - if you are newly gluten-free, wheat-free, etc. consult another book for information on foods to avoid). The book includes the usual writeup on alternative flours and other substitutions. Strangely there is no mention of rice milk as an option for those allergic to soy and dairy - and no mention that many (or most) nut milks contain soy. She also doesn't give substitutes for margarine in recipes for those allergic to soy and dairy.

Unlike other books, she includes nutritional information related to avoiding certain foods. For example, she lists each of the B vitamins and explains the best dietary sources. If you are allergic to a number of these foods, you could be at risk for not ingesting enough through your diet. For those of us forced to avoid many foods (or for people with other medical issues) this information could be critical.

Of course we're all mostly interested in the recipes. Even after excluding the large number with gluten, dairy, soy, etc. there were still a lot of interesting items left. For me, the salad dressings/veggie dips were the most useful. Since I can't have soy, dairy, or citrus, these recipes offered new hope for me (but most contain nuts, be warned). Other recipes seemed good but not particularly simple to make. This book is better at offering variety than quick options for a weekday. On the other hand, if, like me, you're looking for some "real food" options for entertaining, this book offers some good ideas that aren't overly complicated.

Good luck and happy eating!

The best 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I own quite a bit of cookbooks, and already this is tattered from kitchen use. My husband and daughter love the desserts in this book. It takes a little extra time but the carrot cake is excellent. So is the Italian pot roast. I'm a tweaker when it comes to receipes, but I didn't with this book!

Loved it for years 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have been using this book for several years now. The lasagna recipe and oven baked fried chicken are wonderful. I have made so many of the recipes and they are all very good. Highly recommend.

Too many ingredients 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When making any of these recipes, I found myself buying certain ingredients specially for one recipe. They can get expensive to make. The recipes themselves are not great.

SAVE YOUR MONEY! 1 out of 5 stars.

Thank goodness I only paid a penny for this book. Ok, well the $3.99 to ship it made this book cost $4. I feel like Amazon should pay me $20 for the time I wasted even trying any recipes. I'm sorry but there is no other way to say it but, this book just sucks. It's a long list of ingredients many times, and the end result (along with your time spend preparing it) is never spectacular. I'd say, that several of the recipes I tried could even be called 'craptacular'! For all that effort to be met with disappointment (and family NOT enthused...read: wasted food!) really ticks me off. I'm a good, experienced cook so it's not like I'm not understanding the rocket science if you know what I mean! You can find any one of a handful of great books if you want fat free cooking. This, sadly, is NOT one of them. I also tried this author's fat free baking book and almost gagged on the three things I made. Just...don't go there. Run away, find another book! This one is awful!

Editorial Review:

If you are among the 1 in 250 american adults intolerant of gluten or allergic to wheat, you know how frustrating it can be to crave a buttery scone or a slice of warm pie. And if you have kids who are gluten-sensitive, you know how much they miss being able to bite into a chewy chocolate chip cookie when they come home from school and how much they hate having to say no to a slice of a friend's birthday cake.

Now, with Gluten-Free Baking by Cordon Bleu-trained chef Rebecca Reilly, you don't have to sit by while family and friends indulge in desserts and other confections. More than 125 recipes for sweet and savory goods, including crispy cookies, meltingly tender muffins, elegant quiches, and stunning layer cakes, prove that eating can be a pleasure, no matter what your dietary issues are.

Baking without wheat is notoriously tricky, but using Reilly's detailed step-by-step recipes, anyone will be able to turn out tempting treats like moist Pumpkin Bread and tender Sour Cream Coffee Cake. Crisp Ginger Molasses Cookies, Lemon Squares, and Pound Cake are kid-and family-pleasing favorites that will no longer be off-limits.

In addition, you'll find tips on how to stock a gluten-free kitchen, advice on techniques, sources for ingredients, and a list of resources and information on celiac disease and gluten sensitivity.

Gorgeous color photographs show you how appealing gluten-free desserts can be. With Gluten-Free Baking, you'll never miss out on the opportunity to feast on sinfully rich desserts again!

This is a Wonderful Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful cookbook! It is the best my wife and I have found for people who are trying to reduce carbs. We have tried a lot of the recipes, and found that they work and that the food tastes great (especially the desserts). Nearly every page has sidebars with interesting tips or other information that are fun to read. We have used other low-carb cookbooks (Atkins, Protein Power, and South Beach oriented) but we like this one best by a lot. There is also an interesting introduction describing the scientific basis for low-carb diets and comparing the popular ones.

A Wealth of Information 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Carb Wars contains a wealth of information and research on the subject of low carb cooking. It is beautifully photographed and obviously the creation of an artist who is passionate and well-informed about her subject matter. I look forward to trying every recipe in this book.

Editorial Review:

You don't have to compromise on taste in order to cut carbs. "Carb Wars" is filled with over 370 low carb recipes that let you indulge your cravings while still maintaining a healthful lifestyle. Who would have thought that pecan pie, chocolate cake, homefries, cornbread, and peanut butter fudge could be part of a weight loss diet? This is food too good to resist and now you don't have to!

Just had to write a reveiw about my favorite Cookbook... 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

An avid reader, I don't write reviews about any books, none-the-less the "Cooking" kind. We ladies who love to cook and eat are prone to buying many cookbooks only to be disappointing and donated to the local Thrift Store. But the pages of this one, and the sequel, "More, Healthy Homestyle Cooking" are well worn and lovingly revisited nearly every day. They are unique in that they teach you a different way of making meals that are not only easy and healthy but, as many others here have said, taste absolutely delicious.

If you like Mexican try the "Easy Cheesy Chili Relleno Casserole" and "Split Pea Guacamole" (yes it HAS avacados in it) and the consistancy is actually superior to the regular. I love Italian food and the "Chicken Cacciatore", "Eggplant Parmigiana", "Chicken Marsala" and "Italian Eggplant and Rice Bake" are out of this world. Equally good are things like "Hoppin' John", "Pork Chop Suey", "Chinese Chicken Salad" and "Carrot and Raisin Salad". I could go on and on.

Like others here, I've given copies of this Cookbook to many friends and family who have raved about the finished products. I can guarantee won't be disappointed.
