VWAV Review - October 10, 2008

There are over 150 recipes in this book - so I didn't want to leave a review until I had tried a substantial amount of them. Of the recipes I've tried I liked all but one. I think that's pretty good for a cook book! And I've tried a lot - I purchased this book in August it's been 2 months and I've tried twenty recipes so far. The only one I did not like was the Crispy Peanut Butter Cookies on page 200. It sucked big time - too crispy - so much that they fell apart. The taste wasn't that good either. But I have written many more positive reviews for each recipe on my personal blog - and I'm quite impressed with this book overall. I love it, in fact! I've tried recipes from all of the categories in the book - but my favorite recipes come from the Dessert and Muffins and Scone sections. If they were to do a second edition of this book - my only recommendation would be to add the Celcius cooking amount in recipes because it's annoying to have to look that up all the time. I can say that I really like the way the book is set up - with the Contents in the front listing all of the recipes and where to find them... and also an Index in the back. That is helpful because when you really like a recipe - it makes it easier to find it. And I also liked that just about any ingredient can be found in any grocery store - b/c I've seen other cookbooks in the Vegan category that list very certain name brand items - and that's okay if you live in Greater Seattle or something - but over in other countries it can be hell to find something even similar. So I give great praise for this book - I recommend it over Dreena Burtons books for many of the reasons stated above. Thanks Isa for such a great book.

This one-of-a-kind cookbook offers 125 recipes for all meals of the day, from stuffed mushrooms to tofu pizza, gingerbread cupcakes to pasta with "alfreda sauce," and is full of tips and tricks on how to keep your diet vegan, inexpensive, and liberated.

I've got a hand blender and I'm not afraid to use it! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I received ED&BV for my birthday last month. It wasn't even on my wish list but it caught my stepdaughter's attention and I'm thrilled that it did! I've made about 7 or 8 of the recipes so far and they've all ranged from "Huh, that's pretty darn good" to "HOLY SMOKES! That's the most insanely delicious thing I've ever tasted!!!" (If you want an example of the latter, make the Rawesome Dip. It will blow your mind. You've been warned.) A BIG bonus for me: I also got an immersion blender for my birthday, and ED&BV provides a ton of opportunities for me to use it.

Pros:
--The notes in the margin are extremely helpful and detailed, and offer great ideas for variations, serving suggestions, etc.
--The recipes are all user-friendly enough for a less-experienced home cook
--A lot of the recipes will freeze and reheat well, which is great for moms who work full-time or anyone who's just short on time
--Many of the recipes are downright surprising (Cocoa Coconut Chili??? Yes. Really.) and genuinely unique, which is fun for any cookbook junkie who's gotten to the "Been there, cooked that" stage. Flipping through the pages of ED&BV, I lost track of the number of times I thought "Wow, I've never seen anything quite like that before ..."

Cons:
--No nutritional info.
--A significant amount of obscure ingredients that you will probably only find in specialty ethnic shops. I already had fenugreek seeds in my pantry, but that's only because I'm lucky enough to have an Indian grocery store near my job. But neither my favorite well-stocked supermarket nor the local health food store carries these. (There are other authors, however, who are far worse in this regard.)
--Poor index. If you look up "chickpeas," for example, you'll get a list of the page numbers where chickpea recipes can be found, but not a list of the specific recipe names and their page numbers.

Overall, a definite must-have for anybody who loves veg or vegan cooking, or even an adventurous non-veg who just wants ideas for easy-to-make dishes that are as delicious as they are different. I am extremely impressed with this book, and I'm putting Dreena Burton's other books at the very top of my wish list right away.

Editorial Review:

In Dreena Burton's first two bestselling vegan cookbooks, The Everyday Vegan and Vive le Vegan!, she offered a dazzling array of healthy, animal-free recipes, many of which are based ont her experience as a mother of two young girls she and her husband are raising as vegans. Dreena also maintains an active blog (vivelevegan.blogspot.com) and website (everydayvegan.com) and and has cultivated an enthusiastic audience for her nutritious recipes.

In this, her third cookbook, Dreena turns her attention to celebratory food - imaginative, colorful, and delectable vegan fare perfect for all kinds of events, from romantic meals to dinner parties to casual potlucks.

Eat, Drink and Be Vegan is destined to join the bestselling ranks of her first two books (The Everyday Vegan is now in its fourth printing, and Vive le Vegan! is in its third). Come celebrate with Dreena and impress your guests (and yourself) with these sensational animal-free recipes.

Lovely addition to every vegetarian parent's cookbook collection 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I love reading cookbooks. I'm vegetarian. And I have to fix several school lunches per day. So getting the book was a no-brainer for me. I've tried several recipes so far. Some my kids love others they don't. What became pretty clear to me is that the "5-star-rating" by Jennifer's son (the prerequisite for a lunch to get into the book) is -of course- quite subjective. And I know that food preferences in kids do change over time, so I'm hopeful.
The book is full of great ideas, some quick, some more time consuming and also some fancy lunch box stuff. I love that I can make every recipe without having to substitute meat items and it helps me to cook vegan more often (which makes so much sense ethically and environmentally). Great are the recipes from all over the world. Japanese, ethiopian anyone?

Editorial Review:

If you think vegan lunchtime means peanut butter and jelly day after day, think again! Based on the wildly popular blog of the same name, Vegan Lunch Box offers an amazing array of meat-free, egg-free, and dairy-free meals and snacks. All the recipes are organized into menus to help parents pack quick, nutritious, and irresistible vegan lunches. Ideal for everyday and special occasions, Vegan Lunch Box features tips for feeding even the most finicky kids. It includes handy allergen-free indexes identifying wheat-free, gluten-free, soy-free, and nut-free recipes, and product recommendations that make shopping a breeze.

Editorial Review:

The medical world has been touting the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet for decades. In The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen, Donna Klein provides more than 300 recipes suited to anyone who wants to eat a healthful diet free of animal products. Unlike many vegetarian or vegan cookbooks that simply take the meat or dairy products out of a recipe--or even worse, use tasteless substitutes--this book includes only recipes that actually exist in Mediterranean cuisine. You won't find any grainy cheese substitutes or spongy meat imposters here.

In chapters on every course from appetizers to desserts, the author presents recipe upon recipe for flavorful and healthy dishes--all without meat, dairy, or eggs. Appetizers like Mushrooms Stuffed with Bread Crumbs, Parsley, and Garlic--given a sweet and nutty zing from the addition of a fortified wine--or Baked Black Olives with Herbes de Provence and Anise are so full flavored they certainly don't need the richness of animal products. The Poor Man's Pesto (so named because of the absence of cheese) that tops fluffy Potato Gnocchi proves that fruity green olive oil is the heart and garden-fresh basil is the soul of a good pesto. Desserts don't disappoint either. Relying on fresh fruits for flavor, they are just the sort of sweet and rich concoctions we expect from the Mediterranean. Baked Pears are stuffed with a rich blend of bread crumbs, toasted almonds, and chocolate and baked in a flavorful mixture of marsala, white wine, and pear or apple juice.

An extremely helpful Meals in Minutes section offers menu suggestions for those whose schedules allow only an hour or less for meal preparation, and the nutritional information provided for each dish is a welcome bonus for health-conscious cooks. --Robin Donovan
