Excellent small reference book that is purse size and easy to carry everyday to be used as a glycemic load eating guide when out and about!

I recently received this book. I am NOT impressed. It is small enough to carry along with you everywhere. However, even though the back says it "no more math - each food's serving size is already computed into the GL score" it offers no serving sizes at all. For example, it lists "stuffing" at GL-14, GI-76 but offers no further info. How much? What kind of stuffing? Or, meat-filled ravioli GL-3, GI-39. How much? Homemade or store-bought? It goes on like that. There are also not enough listings. This handbook leaves much to be desired.

I also received "The New Glucose Revolution Shopper's Guide to GI Values 2008" (by Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller and Kaye Foster-Powell) at the same time. This book is WELL worth the investment. There are over 1,000 foods listed, including name brand products. If you are looking for a handy guide to take along with you... definitely toss this one and buy the 2008 Shopper's Guide. You will get a much bigger bang for the buck with that book.

That book is MUCH better!

Good luck with the diet. So far, I am excited about it.

This programs promises you will eat more and exercise less. NOT TRUE! For my body type, the diet is basically chicken, tuna and salad all the time every day 7 days a week. And not only do you have resistance exercises to do two days of every week, they also recommend that you do an hour of aerobic exercise 6 days a week. That doesn't sound like more or less of anything to me. The fact is, I couldn't stay on the diet. After 3 days I was sick to death of chicken and salad. And the fact is--if you exercise 6 days a week for an hour, it doesn't matter what you eat--you're going to lose some weight. Too expensive a program. You can get the same info. on the internet for free. It's also too hard for some people to figure their body type with this program. I answered all the questions and could have come under two body types, but it gives you no information about which diet to follow if you fit two profiles.

Ever hankered for a diet book by and for real people--people who, you know, actually have a life? Congratulations: you've just picked it up.

Before we began our diet, Neris and I weighted 434 pounds between us. Our goal was to lose 140 pounds between us in under a year, to go from a size 22 to a size 14. And we did it. If two unusually greedy, cocktail-loving moms can lose this amount of weight without much effort, so can anyone.

This book tells you how two friends did it, and how you can do it too. It's not a diet devised by some bossy string bean who has never been more than 7 pounds overweight, nor by a fat middle-aged doctor, but a real, long-term, workable diet for real people. A modified and therefore bearable low-carb, high-protein way of eating, the diet really works and includes meal plans, recipes, advice on clothes, make-up and hair at every stage from fat to thin. Straightforward, TASTY recipes; many more than you get in the basic book 5 out of 5 stars.

I was very surprised to see the other review for this book, but then I saw the line about the person NOT owning it. I preordered this book, and like the other reviewer, felt that the recipes would be the same...however, I forgot to cancel the preorder, so lo and behold, it arrived at my house in mid-December. This has become my FAVORITE diet cookbook! Unlike the South Beach Diet cookbooks, which contained laundry lists of ingredients and yielded usually unflavorful dishes, the Alli Cookbook contains (1) many, many more recipes than are found in the main book--250 pages of recipe text alone, (2) food for a large variety of tastes including vegetarian, (3) carefully thought out and easy to prepare dishes, (4) creative and interestingly seasoned dishes, and (5) dishes you would never think you would find in a diet cookbook. I am somewhat of a picky eater when it comes to "healthy foods" and I was still able to find dozens of recipes to suit my tastes. The bottom line is that this cookbook has helped me succeed on the Alli plan by adding needed variety and easy-to-cook dishes to my meal plan -- so much so, that even when I get busy and forget to take the pills for several days, I still lose weight and almost never feel deprived. I don't think I would be at the point in the diet with the recipes in the Alli Diet Plan book alone, and I credit this cookbook. (Since starting the diet in mid-November, I've lost 15 pounds, even with some cheating around the holidays, and I'm within 10 pounds of my overall goal.) If you want to enhance your chance for success on the Alli plan and want to enjoy some really flavorful dishes, you need to add this book to your Alli toolkit!
