Editorial Review:

If you eat natural foods, or want to learn more about them, reading The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia will be a treat. The book is an invitation to learn the lore, health properties, and use of more than a thousand familiar and unusual foods and herbs. Each entry consists of a description, a little history or legend, the health benefits, and how to buy (or find) and use it. Author Rebecca Wood clearly delights in her subject--her writing is warm, like love letters to these intriguing foods. "I don't know what I love most about asafetida--its knock-your-socks-off sulfurous aroma ... or ... its pungent but pleasant and satisfying flavor," she writes of the herb also known as devil's dung. "I also love the way the word rolls off my tongue." Not all the entries are complimentary, though--Wood tried to like banana squash, but ended up feeding it to her chickens. Dotting the food entries are sidebars of recipes, preparation suggestions, and weird information that doesn't fit anywhere else: how horses get sunburned, why young wives fed their elderly husbands celery in the 1600s, tips for not crying over onions, and how to harvest natural chewing gum, for example. You may start by looking up a particular food, but you'll linger, reading just for the pleasure of it. --Joan Price

Editorial Review:

A provocative exposŽ of the negative effects of sugars and simple carbs-and how to break the addiction.

Most readers already know that succumbing to sweets too often can lead to obesity and diabetes. What many don't know, however, is that too many "quickie carbs" can bring on a host of other maladies-such as "brain fog," fatigue, mood swings, heart disease, and even cancer-from which millions may be suffering because of their sugar or carbohydrate habits. Once besieged by 44 seemingly unconnected symptoms, former "sugar addict" Connie Bennett, an experienced journalist, managed to kick sweets and simple carbs in 1998. She improved her health-and uncovered extensive medical research that substantiated her theory: people who eat too many low-caliber culprit carbs could be in sugar shock. Based on the insights of thousands of physicians, nutritionists, researchers, and "sugar sufferers" worldwide, SUGAR SHOCK!(tm) not only addresses how badly sugar affects the body, it demonstrates how everyone can kick the sugar habit.

Unhealthful Diet Recomendations 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 22 people found this review helpful.

When it comes to the best kind of diet to eat, one size does not fit all. Some people need more protein and fat, others need more carbohydrates, and still other people need a mix of protein, fat and carbohydrates. Author of "The Vitamin D Cure," Dr. Janes Dowd, would have everyone eating a low fat, almost no carbohydrate diet. The mainstays of the diet are fruits, vegetables, and lean meat. Yuk! Being a person who needs more fat and protein, this diet definately isn't for me. Dr. Dowd's book is just another rehash of the the modern Atken's diet. The original Atken's diet gave you plenty of fat with your protein, fruits and vegies. While the original diet wasn't wonderful, the modern politically correct version of the diet has cut out the fat, which is downright dangerous. I think the reason so many people did as well as they did on the Dr, Dowd's diet is the horrible way they ate previosly.

Another point to consider. Our Creator made us to run on fat, protein, and complex carbohydrates (whole grains). Even though I'm a fat and protein type, I still need some complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates give us energy. Proteins are the building blocks for the body, and fats are used inside & outside the cells to enable them to do their jobs. Fats also provide satiation and help us not to over eat. Depending on your need, eating the good fats can help you lose or gain weight. The polyunsaturated omega 3 fats (EPA & DHA) are brain food. The short chain fats found in butter & yes, cocconut oil are antimicrobal, antibacterial and anticarcinogenic, according PhD biochemist and lipids researcer, Dr. Mary Enig. They also give the cell wall stiffness, so that the polyunsaturated Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids won't leak out of the cell. Omega 3 & 6 fats are liquid in the body, just as they are outside of the body.

Some fats are killer ones. Your definately want to stay away from transfatty acids, which are found in products such as vegetable oil margarines. Vegetable oils are high in omega 6 fats, which having a double bound on their fatty acid chain are very unstable and easily oxidized fats. That is why you should never cook with Canola oil, corn oil, sunflower or safflower oils, etc. Saturated fats with no double or even single bonds, which is what monounstarated olive oil has are the best for cooking with. You also want to stay away from the artery clogging oxidized cholesterol. Bake your chicken and fish, don't pan or deep fry any food, french fries or onion rings included. The one food I try to purchase organically grown is meat. The way our animals are raised is nasty. I do not want to be eating gtowth hormones, antibiotics, etc.

What about fruits and vegetables. They are loaded with much needed vitamins and minerals and should be a central part of any healthy diet. Steaming you vegetable until tender crisp is the best way to cook them. I have at least one raw vegetable salad a day, my husband almost always has two of them. We use red or green leaf lettuce, not iceberg and the freshest vegies we can find. Did you know that the minerals in vegetables and fruits need the good fats to enable them to do their job?

Dr. Dowd's onformation on the benefits of vitamin D is good. This almost convinced me to give the book two stars, but the dietary information is so bad, I gave it only one star. Along with Dr. Joseph Mercola, D.O., I contend that the best way to get your vitamin D is from moderate sun exposure. Sun exposure does not provide EPA & DHA, you'll have to get that from cold water fish or fish oil tablets. Also if you live a northern climate, I live in northern Wisconsin, you will either need to supplement your vitamin D or buy a sunlamp or tanning bed. The best book I've read on vitamin D, is by Paul Stitt, "Vitamin D, Is It The Foutain of Youth?" Another most excellent book on magnessium, "Is The Magnerssium Miracle." Mary Enig & Sally Fallon's book, "Eat Fat, Lose Fat" is also eccllent.

Editorial Review:

Groundbreaking new research has traced the source of a wide array of to a single common factor-—vitamin D deficiency. Leading rheumatologist and researcher Dr. James Dowd reveals the causes of vitamin D deficiency and offers a simple, easy-to-follow five-step program that can eliminate or alleviate a host of seemingly incurable conditions, such as arthritis, in as little as six weeks. Better yet, by staying on the program, you can enjoy robust health and improved fitness for the rest of your life.

Editorial Review:

Did you know the secret to vibrant health is in your blender? It's true--juicing vegetables provides concentrated nutrition that is found in virtually no other source: vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytochemicals, and antioxidants. By juicing, you'll feel better, more energized, and improve your immune system.
More than a simple collection of recipes, this book guides readers toward a lifestyle that promotes alkaline balance by juicing, eating well, and cleansing the body and soul. While most juicing books focus too much on fruit juice (which disrupts the body's pH balance with too much natural sugar), this book primarily focuses on juices, smoothies and soups made from vegetables. It also also offers a guide to the food richest in nutrients from Vitamin A to zinc and includes various cleanses to benefit the colon, liver, gall bladder, and kidney and more. Beyond the body, the Caboms explain the heavy toll emotional, mental, and spiritual unrest can take on the body (and sometimes even encourage disease) and share unique, effective methods for cleansing the body of such toxicity.

About the book - not the diet 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I'm assuming you're reading this because you want to know if this book is worth your money and time, and whether or not you should read it.

If this is not the case, you can skip the rest of this review, and read most of the others - which I have found to be largely testimonial, and will tell you what those reviewers think about the diet.

If you want to know something about the book: read on.

Firstly, I had a very difficult time reading this book - in fact, I skipped most of it, because a very large portion of the book is made up of extended testimonial-like cases. This made the book feel like marketing - and even if you're not as suspicious of marketing as I am, it wears on your nerves quite quickly if you approach the book wanting to learn something about the diet. Additionally, Mr. Atkins' tone made it sound like the diet was a religion or a cult. This made me want to try it even less.

Secondly, Mr. Atkins also seems to be encouraging a sedentary lifestyle. In the portion of the book that I read, he never once mentioned physical activity of any sort other than eating. This turned me off, as I believe that one of the major sources of obesity, especially in highly "industrialized" countries, is lack of physical activity. In short, he does not promote a balanced lifestyle any more than a balanced diet.

Thirdly, Mr. Atkins makes several factual and logical errors. He mentions our ancient hunter ancestors, but fails to mention that they were also gatherers: fruits, roots, nuts, seeds, honey ... all with lots of carbs. And people 200 years ago may have consumed much less sugar than we do now, but he doesn't think that perhaps they weren't obese because of their diet, but because of the amount of physical activity demanded of the large majority of the population just to stay alive.

Fourthly and finally, the book gave me no information I could not have found on the internet.

To sum up, is the book worth your time and money? You be the judge, but for me, it wasn't; I can recommend neither the book nor the diet.

Finally, a way to understand our bodies! 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 27 people found this review helpful.

One thing that I think you will love about Byron Richards is that he doesn't tell you to count calories, he doesn't tell you to avoid the foods you love, he doesn't tell you to change your life dramatically. He simply shows you how to understand what your brain is thinking behind the scenes.

The Leptin Diet won't limit your current lifestyle, you won't feel like you are on a "diet" and you may finally understand why your body wants to regain that weight or maintain the present weight that you want to get past.

Knowing what your body is thinking and doing and WHY it is doing it, is a wonderful thing!

Editorial Review:

The Leptin Diet explains how to unleash the power of hormones to resolve fatigue, food cravings, thyroid problems, and body weight issues. Mastering the fat hormone leptin is the single most important factor in preventing obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. The Leptin Diet contains five simple lifestyle guidelines to get the hormone leptin into balance for permanent weight loss, increased energy, and optimum health. What is Leptin? Fat cells produce the powerful hormone leptin, a primary force instructing metabolism, weight loss, and hormone balance. Leptin communicates directly to your brain, telling the brain how much fat is in storage. It controls appetite, energy, and metabolic rate. Leptin problems are the primary reason for food cravings, overeating, faulty metabolism, the obsession with food, and heart disease. Read The Leptin Diet and notice the difference!

My Dog Bible 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book could have saved my dog. I sought out this book when my maltipoo's appetite was dim. She would barely eat anything and on top of that she was itchy and had grown a small benign tumor on her head. I knew that something was not right with her and so I looked closely at her diet. She has been on the stew, vitamin supplement and dream coat supplement for about 8 months and she is doing great! No more tumor, no itchy skin and no problems. Not to mention she would give her left paw for a lick of stew. Hippocrates said to let food be your medicine. Well thanks to Andi Brown, my dog is cured and healthy!

Editorial Review:

Despite their promise of a complete and balanced meal, most commercial pet foods are chock-full of dangerous by-products, indigestible fillers, and chemical preservatives. It's no wonder that owners spends thousands of dollars every year treating their pets' digestive disorders, tumors, joint and back problems, skin irritations, allergies, and heart, liver, and kidney disease. In THE WHOLE PET DIET, Andi Brown combines simple home cooking with natural supplements, dedicated playtime, exercise, and good old-fashioned pampering to help regulate pets' weight and tap into their natural healing powers.

Editorial Review:

Stepping around the low-fat versus low-carb debate, Jorge Cruise (Eight Minutes in the Morning) suggests that losing weight isn't in what you eat, but rather, when you eat it. The core idea behind The Three-Hour Diet is that by timing your meals and snacks every day, the pounds will come off. No restrictions, no exercise.

While reality is rarely that simple, the advice offered here is nutritionally sound, emphasizing plenty of fruits and vegetables, and filling in with lean proteins, healthy fats, and just enough carbs to keep meals interesting. Following Cruise's guidelines for portion control, you'll eat an average of 1,400 calories per day, filling half your plate with fruits or vegetables, and dividing the other half between the rest of the food groups. Healthy meals from fast-food joints and freezer cases are included, and a substantial recipe section offers everything from a bacon and cheese omelet to rosemary lamb chops. A month-long journal is also provided, giving you space to plan each meal in advance (a key part of the diet), along with daily motivational hints and visualization exercises. A few pages cover basic exercises--but the emphasis is definitely on the diet, which Cruise asserts will work, regardless of whether you choose to work out.

Cruise's straightforward, no-excuses encouragement works well with the simple formula the plan is based upon, and the clever Three-Hour Plate™ makes it easy to keep portion sizes in check. Still, closely monitoring meal time might seem like a challenge to some of the "busy people" for whom the program claims to be specifically designed. If counting calories or net carbs sounds daunting—but keeping a close eye on the clock doesn't—you might just find weight loss success in these pages. —Jill Lightner

Amazon.com exclusive content

Tired of fad diets and their lack of results? That's just how Jorge Cruise, author of The Three-Hour Diet, wants you to feel. Cruise's guidelines encourage sensible portion control and plenty of vegetables, but--perhaps more importantly--they encourage dieters to feel good about themselves by teaching self-acceptance and positive visualization. Stressing an easy-to-follow visual food plan that insists on incorporating snacks and treats into your day, he contends that carb-bashing is a highly ineffective means of maintaining a healthy weight. How can you sort out weight-loss fact from fiction? Amazon.com contributor Jill Lightner got some straight answers from Cruise.

Editorial Review:

For years nutritionists and health practitioners have urged North Americans to eat more fruits and vegetables. Why? Because these foods are low in fat, and are important sources of essential vitamins, minerals and fiber. Yet many of us -- even the most health conscious -- still don't consume the recommended 5 to 10 servings a day.
So what's the solution? For some people, the answer lies in vitamin and herbal supplements, both of which have enjoyed explosive sales growth over the past decade. But recent research suggests that whole, natural foods are still the best source of nutrients. And there's no easier or more effective way to add fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet than by juicing them.
Now, with The Juicing Bible, there's a new and comprehensive source of information for anyone who wants to explore the health benefits of juicing. Here you'll find a fully illustrated reference documenting the nutritive values and healing properties of over 100 fruits, vegetables and herbs. There's also a special section that addresses 60 common health conditions -- with prescriptive advice for using specific juices, as well as beneficial dietary and lifestyle changes. And, of course, there are the juicing recipes themselves -- over 150 of them, including flavourful juices (sample a Crimson Cleanser or Beta Blast), smoothies (try the Pump It Up or Cool Down), tonics, bitters, coffee substitutes and healing teas.
With helpful sidebars, health tips and preparation techn
