Editorial Review:

“Val Frankel is a woman of amazing insight. . . . Read this, weep, and heal.”

—Stacy London, cohost of What Not to Wear

You’ve heard the phrase “the mirror is not your friend.” For Valerie Frankel, the mirror was so much more than “not a friend.” It was the mean girl who stole her lunch money, bitch-slapped her in the ladies’ room, and cut the hair off her Barbie.

If you’re like 99.9 percent of women, the war you wage with yourself over your body image begins at the ripe age of eight, and the skirmishes are fought for the next eight decades. Sometimes you don’t even know when you’ve won. (How many of us have taken out a photo from high school and thought, “Hey! I looked great—why didn’t I know it?”) This book is for anyone who has spent most of her life on—or thinking about being on—a diet. It’s for anyone who ever wished for candlelight in dressing rooms. It’s for anyone who has ever owned a pair of “fat pants.” In short, this book is for anyone who ever felt good or bad about themselves based on how they look.

Valerie Frankel, like most women, has spent most of her conscious life on a diet, thinking about a diet, ignoring a diet, or failing on a diet. At age eleven, her mother put Val on her first weight-loss program. As a teen, she was enrolled in Weight Watchers (for which she invented creative ditching methods). As a young woman, her world felt right only when she was able to zip a certain pair of jeans. Not wanting to pass this legacy on to her own daughters, Valerie set out to cleanse herself of her obsession. Thin Is the New Happy is the true story of one woman’s quest to exorcise her bad body-image demons, to uncover the truths behind what put them there, and to learn how to truly love herself. It’s a poignant, hilarious, and all-out honest account of one woman’s struggle with body image—the filter through which she’s always seen the world—and the way she ultimately overcame it.

Editorial Review:

For decades we have been taught that fat is bad for us, carbohydrates better, and that the key to a healthy weight is eating less and exercising more. Yet despite this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number. In this groundbreaking book, award-winning science writer Gary Taubes shows us that almost everything we believe about the nature of a healthy diet is wrong.

I know I overeat ... this book has helped me understand 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

why I eat because I've never taken the time to stop and analyze the reasons. It's one thing to say I eat when I'm lonely, stressed, mad, etc. It's absolutely eye-opening to learn how to stop to recognize what's coming and have a plan for getting through the moment. This book has been very helpful to me.

changed my life? 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book almost two years ago and am constantly recommending it to people. For some odd reason, I don't give this book all the credit for my weight loss. (I've lost 60 lbs and have kept it off for a year.) The book does have some concrete diet tips like suggesting to only eat 50 percent of your normal portion and only eating things that taste good. What I really liked about this book was that it looked at why you eat. I really believe this book changed the way I look at food. The book helps you to realize that a lot of eating is done to try and solve other problems. It is crazy, the day you reach into the fridge and ask yourself "Why am I eating?" and you recognize that it has nothing to do with hunger and close the door.

Editorial Review:

This book reveals how you can cope with your feelings of frustration, boredom, or loneliness, and offers a unique step-by-step program to stop your emotions from interfering with your eating habits.

Editorial Review:

The first diet that will help you feel good while losing weight written by a respected nutritionist and author of the bestselling books Power Eating and Power Food. Dr. Kleiner is a leading nutrition authority on eating for strength who has put together a diet that has already been successfully tested in a Seattle weight-loss group and documented in a series by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. This book proves that you can choose healthy foods that both make you feel great and, when eaten according to the plan, help you lose weight. Most diets cause chemical changes in the brain that make the dieter feel depressed. The typical plan is often too low in calories. In THE GOOD MOOD DIET the participants eat feel-good foods with both ideal timing and ideal combinationsa balance of protein and fats to go with carbohydrates. Eating from a list of feel-good foods, including fish, flax seed and eggs, and eliminating feel-bad foods including refined sugar, helps dieters feel better and lose weight. However, sweets and alcohol are not tabooeating a bit of chocolate and drinking a glass of red wine a day is okay once youre two weeks into the diet.

Editorial Review:

Diet only half the time with this simple, safe, and science-based weight-loss program.

The Alternate-Day Diet is a revolutionary eating plan based on the animal studies documenting alternateday calorie restriction, which indicate that limiting caloric intake every other day can turn on the “skinny” gene (SIRT1). Applying this same model in humans, Dr. Johnson discovered that a similar cascade of positive effects occurs —reduced inflammation, lower free-radical stress, improved insulin resistance, and better cellular energy production, among others. Most important, it also promotes fat loss by releasing fat cells from around the body’s organs.

But, perhaps, the most significant benefit for those who want to lose weight is that every-other-day calorie restriction eliminates feelings of chronic deprivation—the reason that most diets fail.

Easy-to-follow and scientifically sound, the diet is already a worldwide Internet phenomenon. And this book will provide Dr. Johnson’s legion of followers—plus those new to the diet— with all the guidance and recipes they will need to make the diet work best.

No help 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I didn't find this book of any help. I was also already diagnosed but hoped to find a way to lose weight after 15 years of gradual increase in weight due to an underactive thyroid (hashimoto's thyroiditis). I couldn't possibly stick to this diet and decided that it wasn't worth trying anyway, just to find out what I know already. I had hoped it would teach me a way to eat that would help me lose weight, but it does not. It might just be of use to people who haven't yet been diagnosed, but I doubt it, because if the doctor hasn't diagnosed you yet, he is not going to do so on the basis of a book.

Thyroid Making You Fat book 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I just got this book out of storage to re-read and I realize it's wasted money. I am already on natural thyroid replacement and with that I have lost a lot of weight but to follow a 1000 calorie a day diet (in one place he says 800 per day) is impossible for me. My doctor wants me getting highly nutritous foods and there is no way on this amount. Plus, how many of us are willing to do this for not 1 week, not 2, but for 4 weeks! AND when I was doing aerobics religiously and following 1000 cal per day, I didn't lose weight but this is what he recommends. Never again.
I gave it 2 stars because it did convince me, a couple of years ago, to find a doctor who uses natural thyroid instead of just synthetics. If the synthetics work for you, hooray but they didn't for me.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Sanford Siegal outlines a non-invasive, 28-day program designed to help identify thyroid malfunction. The program consists of eating a healthy percentage of protein, carbohydrates, and fat over a 28-day period while taking weight and temperature measurements. Once an accurate diagnosis is achieved, Dr. Siegal provides recommended medication and a special eating plan.

•The differences between cooked and raw vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, and what they mean for you
•An ease-in approach to eating raw, and how to eat raw in restaurants

In addition, Carol answers frequently asked questions and offers forty simple recipes for every meal, from light dishes such as Gazpacho and Lentil Salad to entrees including Tuna Tartare and Spaghetti al Pesto and even desserts like Pumpkin Pie and Apple Tart with Crème Anglaise—rounding out a thorough, accessible, and eminently compelling case why in the raw is the best way to eat.

Editorial Review:

If the thought of bacteria conjures images of germs that should be avoided at all costs—and certainly not ingested—think again! Some friendly bacteria, called probiotics, are not only beneficial to your health, they’re essential. Now an internationally recognized scientist at a top U.S. medical school—one of the leading researchers in the field—sheds light on the extraordinary benefits of these natural health superstars.

Thanks to an explosion of research in recent years, one thing is clear: probiotics, the healthy bacteria that inhabit the digestive tract, are the body’s silent partners for good health, optimizing the power of the immune system to fight disease and the “bad” germs we fear. But how do they work? And in the face of factors like stress and poor diet, which decrease their numbers, how do you keep your supply well stocked?

Here is an up-to-the-minute, highly accessible guide to probiotics and the foods and supplements that contain and support them—many of which may be in your diet already. Discover:

The key role of probiotics and prebiotics in restoring healthy balance to our bodies, improving immune system functioning, and curbing inflammation

How to use probiotic foods and supplements to prevent and relieve allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, yeast infections, and the negative side effects of antibiotic use

New evidence that probiotics may help fight asthma, cardiovascular disease, breast and colon cancer, autoimmune diseases, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia—and even obesity

Natural sources of prebiotics, the nutrients that help make the digestive tract more hospitable for probiotic bacteria

The Probiotics Revolution also includes a step-by-step plan for incorporating the many food sources of probiotics and prebiotics into your diet, a complete buyer’s guide to probiotic supplements, and how to introduce probiotics to your family and children.

Choose your weight. Choose ANY weight! 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This diet works. That is the first and the last word.

You can eat as much as you like (of the right foods). You will never feel hungry. You can snack as much as you can bear.

Want your svelte twenty year old body back? This diet will do it.

Tired of carrying an extra fifty pounds? This diet will eliminate it without any sacrifice.

Giving up refined flour products (toast) was vital for this satisfied customer; weight loss went from 0 lbs back to -9 lbs per month. Amazing.

Requirements? A little will power. "Do or do not. There is no try." - Yoda.

"Oh no. I couldn't do that. I couldn't give up (meat, milk, cheese, oils)" is your inner dragon talking. Try these recipes. You should notice that you are eating better than ever before.

(Full disclosure. Someone here kept eating 3-4 fish portions / month; purely for the anti-stroke effect, no doubt. Honest. But only 3oz / meal; after two weeks without meat that is a real feast; a Pritiken-sized portion).

These rare feasts helped compliance otherwise enormously. Willpower and self denial alone don't work in the long term. So you CAN eat the wrong foods. Just not every day. Or week. Or month. It is NOT that you can never eat meat, cheese etc again. It IS that you can eat them once every second Thanksgiving (or calculate % non-compliance here) ); which is as often as McDougall says he eats turkey.

Sauces are far more vital than rare feasts. General Tsao, kung pao, thai chili, teriyaki, black bean and mexican hot sauces all make the food an endless everyday treat. Happily they all meet the diet's requirements for limited fat.

Can't do it? Willpower of a gnat? That's a real pity. You could start with partial adherence; get used to it; then gradually increase the compliance. % compliance is entirely up to you. Better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all? Plus the secret is: following the diet becomes extremely easy as it becomes a daily habit. In about a year.

Now before we eat let us say grace. "Thank you Oh Lord for John and Mary McDougall's diet. Good food. Good drink. Good God. Let's eat."

Enjoy.
