Best diet book that I have read in a while 5 out of 5 stars.

What I like about this book is that it presents the consequences for over dieting. The first part of the book is about having a positive self image. When it presents the Skinny Chicks it shows just how hard they have to work to get the bodies that they have and puts in to perspective how realistic your goals are.

The adage says most people won't take action until their back is up against the wall and there's nothing to do but come out swinging. My back was against the wall! But it wasn't the fact that I had sleep apnea and needed a machine just so I could draw a breath. It also wasn't the fact that I could not cross my legs; shop for clothes in regular stores; walk for more than ten minutes without my back killing me; participate in sport activities, or even sit in an airplane without a seat belt extender. I, like many of you reading this book, was already numb to all the jokes from little kids or stares from adults, so those things never became a factor of the day I knew. The day I knew that I had to do something -- the day that I absolutely had to lose weight -- was when I couldn't even wipe my own backside. When you can't even reach around your own massive belly, or reach behind your own back to clean yourself, something has got to be done. At that point I was well over 450 pounds. It was an embarrassing secret that I thought I would take to my grave! No matter what made you choose this drastic change in your body and lifestyle, you should be proud of yourself for making the decision. Contrary to popular belief, surgery is not the easy way out. It's a major life altering choice that you and your family will have to live with for the rest of your lives. But, what a life you now have to live! I recently received this book. I am NOT impressed. It is small enough to carry along with you everywhere. However, even though the back says it "no more math - each food's serving size is already computed into the GL score" it offers no serving sizes at all. For example, it lists "stuffing" at GL-14, GI-76 but offers no further info. How much? What kind of stuffing? Or, meat-filled ravioli GL-3, GI-39. How much? Homemade or store-bought? It goes on like that. There are also not enough listings. This handbook leaves much to be desired.

I also received "The New Glucose Revolution Shopper's Guide to GI Values 2008" (by Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller and Kaye Foster-Powell) at the same time. This book is WELL worth the investment. There are over 1,000 foods listed, including name brand products. If you are looking for a handy guide to take along with you... definitely toss this one and buy the 2008 Shopper's Guide. You will get a much bigger bang for the buck with that book.

That book is MUCH better!

Good luck with the diet. So far, I am excited about it.

You just can't skip the metabolic adjustment phase... 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was a life-saver for me. I carried extra weight on my body from 12 years old until my late 20s, despite numerous attempts to lose it. I was isolated, miserable, exhausted, and fed-up! I bought this book and read it 3 times through before I was ready to commit, but when I did, it was a miracle! I lost 35 lbs in 2 1/2 months, then continued losing over the next year to reach a total of 60 lbs lost. I am now 32, having kept the weight off for 4 years.

YOU MUST DO THE METABOLIC ADJUSTMENT PHASES!! I wonder if the other reviewers who had issues with this got so caught up with the rapid weight loss that they didn't want to take a break and let their bodies adjust. The two week adjustment is what makes this diet better than any other I've seen. It takes into account the body's tendency to plateau and rewires your metabolism to continue working throughout the process. I swear that I have a better metabolism now than I did in my 20s! I do not have to follow the diet anymore, I simply try eat a healthy balanced diet (a little heavier in protein, lighter in carbs) and do regular cardio and strength training workouts. Nothing excessive, just the standard recommendations. And when I start to indulge and put a few lbs back on... I do a cycle or two of Lean for Life and it's off in no time.

It is restrictive, and requires daily planning so you keep your nutrients in line. But when you start to see the results, and FEEL the results, it's hard to give up. And because it is quicker than many other weight loss programs, it's something that you only have to do for a limited time.
I have purchased 3 copies (I lose other things besides weight). Best 60 bucks I ever spent!
