Get It- and Be the Biggest Winner 5 out of 5 stars.
178 of 180 people found this review helpful.

The first 27 pages of this book consist of "tips" for losing weight. This includes things such as:

-the Biggest Loser diet in a nutshell
-how to keep a food journal
-how to read labels
-a section where the Biggest Losers from the show share their favorite foods in various categories such as "their top 20 low cal foods", "their top 20 evening snacks", or "their top 20 low cal desserts."

Then comes the part you likely got the book for: the calorie counter. HOWEVER, this is not simply a book that gives you ONLY the amount of calories in a food item, no, The Biggest Loser Calorie Counter: The Quick and Easy Guide to Thousands of Foods from Grocery Stores and Popular Restaurants--As Seen on NBC's Hit Show! also gives you the amount of protein, carbs, fiber, sugar, fat, saturated fat, and sodium (which is really good for those with heart or blood pressure issues) in a food item. Know too that in this particular calorie counter, food items are arranged in alphabetical order by "groups" such as "beverages" "desserts" or "pasta".

The book ends with a "dining out" section, which is where you can find info on foods in your favorite restaurants- well, maybe not ALL your favorite restaurants, but a lot of them. Also need to mention that the book can fit in an average-sized purse so you can take it along when eating out (if you're a guy, you'll just have to tote it around).

A very well-organized and handy book that should help many dieters on their quest for a healthier body, I give it 5 stars easy. Overweight people suffering from plantar fasciitis might also be interested in The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution.

Editorial Review:

How many times does a dieter enthusiastically and faithfully start a weight-loss regimen only to end up a week, a month, a year later giving in to hunger and cravings again and again--and before he or she knows it, the pounds have packed back on?

This time, it's going to be different. This time, there's The Beck Diet Solution Weight Loss Workbook--a straightforward, effective plan for dieting successfully, losing weight with confidence, and, most importantly, keeping those excess pounds off forever.

Dr. Judith Beck, director of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research, is a world-recognized authority in the field of Cognitive Therapy. In her first weight-loss book, The Beck Diet Solution, she created a unique program that revolutionized people's approach to shedding pounds by changing both behavior and thinking. Rather than tell what to eat, Dr. Beck's step-by-step, six-week plan--which works with any nutritious diet--teaches the skills needed to stay continuously motivated to stick to a diet and to achieve lasting weight loss.

Features

  • Works for dieters who are familiar with the original The Beck Diet Solution book AND for those coming to the program for the first time through this workbook

  • It is a stand-alone workbook that will incorporate the philosophy of Cognitive Therapy for weight loss and give the reader a map to plan and chart their own weight-loss program

  • Highly user-friendly, with plentiful opportunities to connect with other real-life dieters through their stories and sessions with Dr. Beck

  • There is a place for the reader to fill out lists of favorite foods, trigger foods, and alternatives based on a healthy eating plan

I would really recommend it for eveybody.

it is not a diet, it is more of a lifestyle. So it is not about eating less like any other regular diet, it is about eating what's right.

I think the book looks too big! the concepts are easy and the author didn't need to repetitive!

buy only this book and one of its workout dvds, and do not bother buying the other abs diet books (same info over and over again!)

Good and bad 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Not as bad as most of the reviews here. I will say this, you have to weed out the good from the bad. Kevin does make some false claims, like air conditioning is bad for you... air passes through something that is cold, and cools the air, so then heat is bad for you too. So you just have to weed out the nonsense from the facts.

However, this diet is based off of "Pounds and inches" which you can google, and get the facts from a real doctor. But here are the pros and the cons -

    Pros -
You will lost weight hand over fist, I've tried a few diets, and nothing works this fast! Roughly, between 1 to 2 pounds a day. Although you are limited to the foods you can eat, but I was able to rotate between the bass and the beef (sometimes with onions and garlic, depending if I went out or stayed in...lol), and the meals were really good. You have to give yourself injections everyday, but it's not as bad as you think. They give you instructions, and you don't feel a thing if you follow the directions so don't be afraid.

The other thing I notice is that there are no more food cravings. Big macs, cookies, white castles, and when I tried this stuff, it didn't taste as good as I remember. Strange, but it's a good thing.

    Cons -
You can't take any medications, this is because the chemistry in your body has to be perfect. I skipped phase 1 which is optional. The phase 2 takes 40 days, and phase 3 takes 21 days, so you're ready for some pancakes when you finish!... My suggestion is not to go over board after completing the diet, I did and I gained 10 lbs so far and it's been 6 weeks after I finished the diet, but with all diets you gain some of the weight back, so that's not so bad. You do have to get a checkup, and some blood work, submit the results, and fax over information, so you have to run around a little, (but it's worth it)

Overall I would recommend this diet, it does take a commitment. I did cheat a few times during phase 2, gained 4-8 lbs each time, and like I said before, you lose 2 lbs a day to get it off. That may be why I gain weight after it is all said and done. But I lost a lot of weight, even in the areas that were hard to get off like the belly fat.

I do recognize now that the belly wouldn't look so bad if I had better posture, so I'm working on that as well as working on keeping the weight off.

I've been dieting for 2 1/2 years, tried lots of diets, and this diet is for keeps. I started at 230 lbs, and 2 1/2 years later I'm down to 168 lbs. Although I still have a little belly which goes away if I force my posture into place, but people say I'm thin now, I'm a body builder..., and when I talk of a diet, they ask me if it's to bulk up (...for body building). After this diet is the first time that I started to get compliments about my size. All of which I greatly appreciate after 2 1/2 years of hard work.

    Editorial Review:

In this groundbreaking book, the result of seven years of research in every science connected with the impact of nutrition on health, award-winning science writer Gary Taubes shows us that almost everything we believe about the nature of a healthy diet is wrong.

For decades we have been taught that fat is bad for us, carbohydrates better, and that the key to a healthy weight is eating less and exercising more. Yet with more and more people acting on this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues persuasively that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates (white flour, sugar, easily digested starches) and sugars–via their dramatic and longterm effects on insulin, the hormone that regulates fat accumulation–and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number. There are good calories, and bad ones.

    Good Calories
These are from foods without easily digestible carbohydrates and sugars. These foods can be eaten without restraint.
Meat, fish, fowl, cheese, eggs, butter, and non-starchy vegetables.

    Bad Calories
These are from foods that stimulate excessive insulin secretion and so make us fat and increase our risk of chronic disease—all refined and easily digestible carbohydrates and sugars. The key is not how much vitamins and minerals they contain, but how quickly they are digested. (So apple juice or even green vegetable juices are not necessarily any healthier than soda.)
Bread and other baked goods, potatoes, yams, rice, pasta, cereal grains, corn, sugar (sucrose and high fructose corn syrup), ice cream, candy, soft drinks, fruit juices, bananas and other tropical fruits, and beer.

Taubes traces how the common assumption that carbohydrates are fattening was abandoned in the 1960s when fat and cholesterol were blamed for heart disease and then –wrongly–were seen as the causes of a host of other maladies, including cancer. He shows us how these unproven hypotheses were emphatically embraced by authorities in nutrition, public health, and clinical medicine, in spite of how well-conceived clinical trials have consistently refuted them. He also documents the dietary trials of carbohydrate-restriction, which consistently show that the fewer carbohydrates we consume, the leaner we will be.

With precise references to the most significant existing clinical studies, he convinces us that there is no compelling scientific evidence demonstrating that saturated fat and cholesterol cause heart disease, that salt causes high blood pressure, and that fiber is a necessary part of a healthy diet. Based on the evidence that does exist, he leads us to conclude that the only healthy way to lose weight and remain lean is to eat fewer carbohydrates or to change the type of the carbohydrates we do eat, and, for some of us, perhaps to eat virtually none at all.

The 11 Critical Conclusions of Good Calories, Bad Calories:

    1. Dietary fat, whether saturated or not, does not cause heart disease.
    2. Carbohydrates do, because of their effect on the hormone insulin. The more easily-digestible and refined the carbohydrates and the more fructose they contain, the greater the effect on our health, weight, and well-being.
    3. Sugars—sucrose (table sugar) and high fructose corn syrup specifically—are particularly harmful. The glucose in these sugars raises insulin levels; the fructose they contain overloads the liver.
    4. Refined carbohydrates, starches, and sugars are also the most likely dietary causes of cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, and the other common chronic diseases of modern times.
    5. Obesity is a disorder of excess fat accumulation, not overeating and not sedentary behavior.
    6. Consuming excess calories does not cause us to grow fatter any more than it causes a child to grow taller.
    7. Exercise does not make us lose excess fat; it makes us hungry.
    8. We get fat because of an imbalance—a disequilibrium—in the hormonal regulation of fat tissue and fat metabolism. More fat is stored in the fat tissue than is mobilized and used for fuel. We become leaner when the hormonal regulation of the fat tissue reverses this imbalance.
    9. Insulin is the primary regulator of fat storage. When insulin levels are elevated, we stockpile calories as fat. When insulin levels fall, we release fat from our fat tissue and burn it for fuel.
    10. By stimulating insulin secretion, carbohydrates make us fat and ultimately cause obesity. By driving fat accumulation, carbohydrates also increase hunger and decrease the amount of energy we expend in metabolism and physical activity.
    11. The fewer carbohydrates we eat, the leaner we will be.

Good Calories, Bad Calories is a tour de force of scientific investigation–certain to redefine the ongoing debate about the foods we eat and their effects on our health.

    Editorial Review:

An easy-to-start, simple-to-maintain, scientifically sound, and eminently usable twelve-week program of small steps on the road to better health

Small Changes, Big Results is not about cutting all the carbohydrates out of your diet. Or replacing every single gram of sugar with omega-3 fatty acids. It’s not about doing one hundred sit-ups a day, or getting on the treadmill whenever you have a free second. In fact, it’s not about any of the total lifestyle-replacement gimmicks—whether diet, exercise, or pop psychology—that have swept our culture in recent years, putting untold millions of Americans on the risky roller coaster of success and failure that defines fad diets and programs.

    Not here.

Small Changes, Big Results is about reality—the reality of what you can do, the reality of what you want to do, and the reality of what works. It’s about introducing a series of small changes each week for three months in the three core areas of diet and nutrition; exercise and fitness; and emotional wellness. For each of the twelve weeks, nutritionist Ellie Krieger introduces a very finite, completely practical action plan for the week—and not only are these tasks incredibly doable, they’re in fact so accessible that it’s tough not to be inspired.

For example, in Week 1 the nutrition task is merely to go shopping, buy some healthful pantry items, and start keeping track of what you eat; the exercise consists of taking three twenty-minute walks; and the wellness aspect is to do a five-minute breathing exercise. That’s it. And it doesn’t really get any harder.

But these small changes do in fact lead to big results. At the end of twelve weeks, a totally unhealthy diet has been overhauled: armed with easy, delicious recipes and tips, you’ve removed unhelpful munchies and replaced them with healthful snacking, you’ve cut down on lethal trans fats while adding beneficial fat choices, you’ve replaced refined grains with whole grains, you’re eating more fish and less red meat, and so forth. Yet you’ve never been forbidden to eat a single thing: instead of prohibiting entire food groups, Ellie categorizes foods as Usually, Sometimes, and Rarely—and now you should be eating more from the Usually choices, less from the Rarely category. Furthermore, you’ve integrated physical activity into your life, and you’ve developed a set of tools to help you deal with stress—you’re not only eating better, but you’re also exercising better and feeling better.

The beauty of this program is that none of these action steps is remotely intimidating, because they’re not a full immersion into a totally new lifestyle. Instead, it’s a series of incremental changes—removing bad habits one by one, while at the same time adding good ones. There’s nothing to scare you off—on the contrary, here’s a whole book full of small changes that produce big results.

    Editorial Review:

From patient advocate Mary Shomon, author of Living Well With Hypothyroidism, here is the first book to tackle the weight factors specific to thyroid patients and detail a conventional and alternative plan for lasting weight loss.

An estimated 10 million Americans have been diagnosed with thyroid disease—most of them women—and for the majority of them, losing weight is mentioned time and time again as a primary concern and chief frustration—a challenge made more difficult due to the metabolic slowdown of a malfunctioning thyroid gland. For these thyroid patients, treatment alone doesn't seem to resolve weight problems. Further, they may struggle with raising basic metabolism, resolving underlying nutritional deficiencies, treating depression and correcting brain chemistry imbalances, reducing stress, and combating insulin resistance.

The Thyroid Diet will identify these factors that inhibit a thyroid patient's ability to lose weight, and offer solutions—both conventional and alternative—to help. It will discuss optimal dietary changes, including how a thyroid sufferer should focus on a low-glycemic, high-fibre, low-calorie diet, eaten as smaller, more frequent meals to balance blood sugar. The Thyroid Diet addresses the use of various herbs, nutritional supplements, and prescription weight loss drugs, outlining the necessity of exercise, and drawing together all information into an integrated diet and exercise plan. It contains several different eating plans, food lists, and a set of delicious and healthy gourmet recipes. With handy worksheets to use in weight loss tracking, and a special resource section featuring websites, books, and support groups, here is vital help for the millions of thyroid patients dealing with weight problems.

Mary Shomon has been praised by doctors around the country for her medical knowledge and sensitivity to patients' needs. She will be receiving similar blurbs for this new book. There are no other books on controlling your weight problems if you have a thyroid condition, yet over 40% of overweight people have evidence of a thyroid condition, and the weight loss problems facing them are unique and need a specific approach.
